Boundaries Date Studio Instructor Team Location Project Description
Winter 2017 LA 302L Ray Senes Collin Ng, Hyunji Kim Rancho Viejo De Santa Fe, NM Synthesizing disconnected boundaries in order to create wholeness is achieved by critical analysis of existing grid systems. Pushing and pulling grid systems activated edges and connected boundaries between communal and private residential spaces.

Analyze
Rancho Viejo de Santa Fe, NM The community plaza covers 2 acres and is located in the center of the village. The site is surrounded by townhomes to the North, single family homes on the East and South side, and commercial spaces to the West. The plaza is mostly activated by residents that have to take their dogs on regular walks. The site lacks engagement because the Boundary between communal and private space is disconnected.
07
Grid Process After analyzing the distinct Boundary between private and communal space, we connected boundaries by pushing and pulling the mid-points of each residential and commercial building towards the community plaza.
Context Preserving untouched land and centralizing communities is a principle that has been applied thoroughly when it comes to design. The site is surrounded by the Jemez Mountains to the East and the Sangre De Cristo Mountains to the West.
08
Investigate
Rancho Viejo de Santa Fe, NM The objective is to design through the windows of the residents and see what they expect from a community plaza. Designing the communal plaza from the inside creates moments for the residents that are intimate and personal. Investigating induced the grid-like forms on our site. However, the manipulation of these forms are created based on what exists, what should exist, or what previously existed. Circulated pathways, various programs, vegetated planters, even different heights of trees all respect the grid and are designed from the fram of the window.

Synthesize
Rancho Viejo de Santa Fe, NM In order to create wholeness and encourage community engagement, we created an instance of about 700 people activating the site. This helped in identifying suitable spaces for different types of programming. The juxtaposition between mowed lawn and airy feather grass allows one to step into curiousity. This distinction helps one understand spaces and make their own path aside from the fixed circulation.

Modular Planes Date Studio Instructor Team Location Project Description
Winter 2017 LA 332L Keiji Uesugi Collin Ng, Justin Sun Environmental Design Building - Cal Poly Pomona The objective was to show a new perspective of vertical and horizontal planes and how they could be organized and arranged to appear as if they were entirely horizontal or vertical. The planter in between the two benches helps emphasize the vertical plane emerging from the two horizontal planes.

Modular Planes Bench Construction
The idea of Boundaries inspired the construction of this bench. When analyzing boundaries, we notice that there are not only horizontal boundaries but vertical ones too. Creating a seam between these horizontal and vertical 2x4 Hem Fir bridges between these boundaries. This seam creates a difficulty in trying to decipher between which boundary begins or ends. The idea is to create this continuum with no visible connectors such as bolts, screws or nails.

Parking Addition Date Studio Team Location Project Description
Fall 2016 TD Architects Tony Dabaghy Irvine, California The objective is to create more parking spaces and to flow traffic away from the main road. The parking spaces are aligned and rotated to create the most possible parking spaces available for the employees of the building.

Parking Addition Irvine, California
Several iterations were created in order to formulate the most efficient flow of traffic. This option was most appropriate because it flows traffic away from the main road which is constantly busy. For every 4 parking stalls, a tree must be placed to create shade for cars underneath.

Personal Silent Scream
I always find myself straddling between two opposite sides. Between art or science and private or public. Through landscape architecture, I am able to find a connection between two boundaries. This painting is composed of three mediums that are usually not mixed with eachother, acrylic, watercolor, and micron pens. The purpose of this painting is to create curiosity about why this girl is screaming. There is a boundary between the paper and myself and the scream is what connects both of us. The focal point and intricate details are within this scream because where there isn’t there is. When there is silence, their is loudness.
