ENTERTAINMENT CITY SWA GROUP | LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE INTERNSHIP SUMMER 2017

ANALYSIS

INTERNSHIP ANALYSIS | SWA GROUP - LAGUNA BEACH INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION | SAUDI ARABIA

The objective for this project is to create an entertainment city that is submerged in between the crevices near Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The top of the cliff is 300 meters above the proposed city. Analyzing the existing geology and infrastructure formulated the overall concept design of the multi-layered city. Instead of looking at this edge as a disconnective barrier, the design team [SWA Group, and several other firms] viewed it as a connector.

Some opportunities of above and below programming begun to draw connections between the two elevations. Carving the city based on the existing topography instead of reforming the geology, highlights the beauty and essence of the site. This 10-week competition was conducted through a series of workshops with specific design teams: theme park, urban design, sports park, transportation, engineering, sustainability, architects and landscape architects.

THE SILOS

BOBBY BROOKS MEMORIAL INTERDISCIPLINARY DESIGN STUDIO | FALL 2017

CONTEXT WHERE // DAMEN SILOS | CHICAGO, ILLINOIS TEAM // EDUARDO MARTINEZ GUSTAVO CORONILLA GUSTAVO TROCHEZ INFO // THE TEAM APPROACH IS TO ACTIVATE THE ABANDONED GRAIN FACTORY AND SILOS BY MAKING IT A SELF-SUSTAINABLE INFRASTRUCTURE THAT CAN BE SEEN AS A POINT OF REFUGE. THE CATHEDRAL OF THE PRAIRIES WILL BE LOOKED AT AS A CENTRAL HUB WHEN THE CITY OF CHICAGO IS FLOODED AND THE CITIZENS HAVE NO PLACE TO GO. THINKING OF THE WORST CASE POSSIBLE HELPED OUR TEAM FORMULATE OUR OVERALL NARRATIVE AND DESIGN APPROACH.

SITE BOUNDARY THE CHICAGO RIVER RESIDENTIAL AREAS

PROCESS Thorough analysis and site investigation formulated the overall project narrative by exploring the potentials of the site. Taking a look at the past, the Silos used to store grain that contributed to Chicago’s economic growth. The present shows the abandoned inactive and the future aims to rejuvenate the site once again through sustainable design that ties back to an overall contributing system. The objective is to create a prototype of an adaptive re-use

infrastructure that can be self-sustainable through a series of interconnected systems. Looking at the existing forms of the Silos and applying programs within the interior and exterior spaces creates a unified design. The different methods of process include exploded axonometric drawings of what the site’s potential underlying systems could be and a historic timeline of what the site could look like.

SYSTEM UV light is then used in the fourth pool to kill any remaining bacteria. The final pool is the recreational pool that is utilized as a swimming pool in the summer and an ice sports platform in the winter. The filtered water will go through a last round of filtration when it is pumped back into the Silos in order for distribution. This filtration system provides water to the community at large and to systems of agriculture and research.

AQUAPONICS

The looping system of the water filtration begins by pumping water from the Chicago River into the tower and cascades out on top of the roof. This system will then go through one of the silos into the first pool of aqualife. This system will contribute to the vertical farming and aquaponics system inside the building. The second pool will separate gravel and water to lead into the biofiltration pool which includes plants that break down microogranisms.

THE NEXUS

SWA GROUP X CPPLA @ WUHAN,CHINA DESIGN STUDIO | WINTER 2018

CONTEXT WHERE // WUHAN, CHINA TEAM // SHELBY HERBEL CHRISTOPHER VALENZUELA INFO // THE TEAM APPROACH IS TO CREATE A SEAM BETWEEN THE RIVER, THE PARK, AND THE EXISTING URBAN FABRIC. THE MAIN ISSUE OF THE SITE IS THE EXISTING FLOOD-WALL THAT HAS CREATED THESE DISCONNECTIONS. OUR PROPOSAL IS TO SLOPE THE PARK AND THE CITY TO THE TOP OF THE RE-DESIGNED WALL WHICH ALLOWS THE CITY TO SEEP TOWARDS THE YANGTZE RIVER AND THE PARK BLEEDING INTO THE CITY. THIS SITE BOUNDARY IS ABOUT 71 HECTARES.

PROCESS Understanding the existing components and issues of the site helped determine the overall concept design. The flooding issue in Wuhan, China fluctuates seasonally which forces developers to build behind a standard buffer zone. By looking at ways in which we could create as much waterfront blocks as possible, we looked at how we can

bring the park back into the city through this finger-joint concept. These green corridors and block extensions show that this design could potentially add more building space as well as more public open space. This balance optimizes maximum views and protects the city from becoming flooded.

AERIAL VIEW The main issue of the site was the disconnection between the Yangtze river, the cultural railyard park and the existing urban fabric. This barrier was mainly created by the existing flood wall that protects the city from becoming flooded. Sloping up the city and the park to the top of the newly manipulated wall creates a more cohesive integration between the

river, park and the city. This new edge acts as a connector and a protector by creating a place that people can inhabit and occupy at many different scales and levels. The notion of pushing and pulling elements across these overlapping systems creates a multi-functional place of occupation with a deeply rooted identity.

PARKING ADDITION

BERTEA BERTEA

TD ARCHITECTS INC. INTERNSHIP IRVINE, CALIFORNIA | FALL 2016

The objective is to create more parking spaces and to direct the incoming traffic away from the main road. The parking spaces are algined and rotated to create the most possible parking spaces available to the employees working in the building. Several iterations were made in order to formulate the most efficient flow of traffic. This option was the most appropriate because it slows traffic on the busy main road. For every 4 parking stalls, a tree must be planted to create shade for cars parked beneath.

THE DECK LA 332 CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION LAS VEGAS,NEVADA | WINTER 2017

The main objective of this elevated deck was to create a wooden pathway placed on top of a dry-creek water basin in the direction of the Red Rock Canyon National Conversation Area in Las Vegas, Nevada. This deck connects back to a proposed ADA ramp that slopes up from the parking lot to the existing visitor center. This construction detail shows the number of beams and joists needed to construct the platform. Due to the heavy heat in this area, a shade structure is proposed to accomodate different types of weather conditions.
