The Italian Manovia Three questions for Francesco Alberoni. We asked eminent sociologist Francesco Alberoni, author of well known works like "Innamoramento e amore" and "Viaggio nell’animo umano", to tell us how he sees the historical significance of footwear and concepts like "Made in Italy" and "hand made", which are being used increasingly frequently by Italian businesses.
1. Is there a sociology of footwear?
How have its uses changed in history, and in recent times in particular?
Shoes have always played a major role in our clothing, both men’s and women’s. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, expensive shoes were a distinguishing feature marking out noble from commoner, rich from poor. Unlike clothes, shoes are in contact with the ground and wear out with use. Always wearing different shoes meant being able to buy news ones and choose from day to day. The nobility had wardrobes full of exquisitely beautiful shoes; poor people only had one pair, which they handed down from generation to generation instead of replacing them, at the most repairing the soles. Footwear thus became a status symbol. Shoes say something about our social status, our tastes, they’re a statement of our success in society and our affluence. They may rightly be regarded as a distinguishing feature of western society. Shoes are a sort of passport in the world of style, a detail marking us out, telling the world how elegant or fashionable, trendy, sexy or sporty we are... A sort of silent yet resounding statement of what we are like and how we want others to see us. Shoes are like masks that hide not our faces but the antipodean zone of our feet, yet they lend us their aura, their style. By wearing a pair of shoes, we become part of the universe that they represent. Footwear is the true mark of our cultural and social identity. 38

2. NeroGiardini Here’s a lot of talk about such concepts as "Made in Italy" and "hand made". can genuinely claim to represent them, thus offering customers considerable value added… but what in particular?
Italy was dominated by foreign powers for centuries and its only claim to fame was its gift for making beautiful things for the rich. It began to produce for the affluent classes, who are very keen on personal care. Production at the service of the body, its beauty and comfort. Made in Italy thus came to be synonymous with beautiful, long lasting, well made, defect-free, comfortable and pleasing to wear. Italian shoemakers worked for Hollywood stars, our dressmakers made their dresses and many American and British actors came to Italy specifically to have their suits made. This capacity was then extended to furnishing and jewellery. A craft industry like no other in the world, using a skilled Italian workforce and Italian materials of the highest quality, was thus formed. Hence the worldwide fame of Made in Italy, the conviction that in certain fields Italian products have no rivals. Many producers have moved their production to Asia, a sacrilege that is threatening our economy. It is against this pernicious tendency that Enrico Bracalente has fought. With NeroGiardini he showed that it’s possible to produce in Italy, and with Italian people and Italian raw materials (i.e. producing the real “Made in Italy”), and was amazingly successful, firstly in Italy and now in the rest of Europe and the world. Whereas those who “cheat” on Made in Italy are gradually unmasked by the market and an increasingly demanding and discerning public.
3. sortCraftofandItalianpassionbusinessare twoculture: very human qualities that define a certain is it possible in our age of super-globalization to harness these two qualities to an industrial process?
I’d say that craft and passion are the essence of Italian industry. Italy abounds with small businesses, often of high quality, founded and led by a single person. Even the few Italian multinationals to be successful on a global scale grew out of the genius of just one individual. Enrico Bracalente, with his NeroGiardini, has managed to develop a project that has nothing to fear from comparison with the big name brands of Italian fashion. And for the future? Since demand for quality products is growing with globalization and the affluence of emerging economies, I think there will be more and more room for the true, authentic Made in Italy.
