Simply The Best ... Welcome to the Best of the Willamette Valley. Our inaugural edition features winners as voted by over 17,000 unique users. Within this magazine we present 382 awards in 191 categories to 329 different individuals and businesses. To be named in the top two of any of our categories is an accomplishment. Congratulations to all our winners. The Best of the Willamette Valley contest opened on February 10th with nominations of over 1,600 individuals and businesses. Voting opened on March 9th and was held through March 27th. Despite the pandemic of 2020, we received over 70,000 votes cast by our 17,000 unique voters. We chose the Oregon Pioneer, also known as the “Gold Man” statue that stands atop our state capital building as our visual symbol. Created by Ulric Ellerhusen and standing 22 feet tall, it was chosen to pay tribute to those who began arriving in the Willamette Valley as early as 1839.

It is a fitting symbol for today’s small businesses in Marion and Polk Counties. Like our contestants, we too are a small business based in the great Willamette Valley. During this difficult year for small businesses, the term “all in” has never been more appropriate. Being a small business today takes more bravery than ever before, like the pioneers that traveled West on the Oregon Trail. NERUS Strategies is not new to contests. We are quickly becoming known as the producers of North America’s most successful Best Of programs. Our largest is Best of Las Vegas with over nine million votes cast last year. At The Peak Making The Climb To Business Ownership
What does it take to turn dreams into realities? Our story began under a mountain of student loan debt, a mortgage and 3 toddlers all close in age. We were struggling to make ends meet and felt trapped in a “hamster wheel” of bill pay. I was fortunate to have a job that paid well enough to keep my wife home with the kids, but often required me to spend half the month traveling, which left my wife to shoulder the burdens of the household alone. It was arguably the most challenging period of our lives. I was missing my kids’ childhood, the passion for my work was dwindling & we were stretched so thin we were sacrificing our relationship to barely break even. We knew there had to be a better way, but what was it? Where was the intersection of our greatest talents and our greatest passions? Where was that sweet spot, the dream job, that PAGE 8
would give us purpose and promote a better lifestyle for our family? What example did we want to set for our kids and what legacy do we want to leave them? As we answered these questions, Apex Paint & Remodel began to take shape. On late nights, between diaper changes, my wife would put her creative talents to work branding and marketing the business, while I spent every hour I had to spare building the operational framework and licensing for the business. Our startup strategy reminded me of something from the movie Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.” Build the brand, attract the talent, put quality and service first, and the work will come. “We are thriving because of referral and word of mouth,” said Ivonne Cline, owner of Aspen Pain Clinic with her husband, Michael. “We are established as a referral based clinic with 80% of clientele coming from medical doctors, 15% from word of mouth and 5% from internet searches.” “Our clinic is set up more medically minded, which means no tipping allowed,” Cline said of the clinic located at Aspen Grove (corner of Cherry and Alder) across from Bi-Mart in Keizer. Massage is more than a chance to get refreshed for many people in the workforce. “People think about massage as something extra, as in it must be nice to have that time for yourself or if you can afford it,” Cline said. “But it is not a luxury when it comes to an injury.” When the treatment is performed by a licensed and experienced provider, it improves blood and lymphatic circulation, calms the nervous system and generally relieves muscle pain. “We tailor to a lot of working individuals,” she said. “There’s no package or timed session of 30-, 60-, or 90minutes. It’s per basis. They choose when they come in and they make the schedule.
