W Simply elcome to the 2021 inaugural edition of Shenandoah Valley Best. “Spectacular” is a common word used in describing the Shenandoah Valley, and just as spectacular as our natural wonders are the businesses that make up our part of America and the American Dream. The Shenandoah Valley begins at the top of Virginia and is approximately 140 miles long with the Blue Ridge to the east and the Alleghenies to the west. Before the rest of the continent was explored, the Shenandoah Valley was considered the American frontier. Many years later, the region would play a crucial role in the American Civil War. The turmoil and triumphs of the region’s rich history have been preserved in many museums and sites across the Shenandoah Valley. It can also be seen in the character and architecture of the cities and towns. The unique history of the Shenandoah Valley makes it the authentic and amazing place that it is today. This year we embarked on a journey of discovery. A journey to discover individuals and businesses that are the best at what they do in 197 categories. To accomplish this, we asked folks from throughout the Valley to nominate their favorites. Between March 8th and March 19th, we received over 1,600 nominations

from 1,224 business owners and their fans. From April 4th through the 23rd, we held our voting period where we received over 35,000 votes in support of our community. Today, we are excited to announce the 319 individuals and companies, who were awarded Gold and Silver Winners in the 197 categories. The top ten categories represented 20% of the votes. In ranking order, they were: Hair Salon, All-Around Restaurant, Barber Shop, Hearing Center, Specialty Store, Asian Food, Pizza, Bakery, Breakfast, and Attraction. The Shenandoah Valley is fast becoming a mobile engaged market. Of the votes cast, 77% were from a smart phone, 20% from desktop, and 3% from a tablet. Reaching our digital mobile market has never been more important. Radio and mobile make the perfect pairing to reach your next customer in our market. We know that this has been a challenging year, and we also recognize that some of our business friends and contemporaries made the tough decision to close. Others have reimagined how business will be accomplished, and several have opened for the first time. The pandemic has forever shaped how we all approach business. Purcell Park is made up of a 1.5-mile walking trail, softball and baseball fields, four tennis courts, and a playground. The park also has three picnic shelters, several restrooms, and a large portion of the Bluestone Trail running through it. The Bluestone Trail is a shared-use path that connects James Madison University, Purcell Park, and neighboring communities, and is used by walkers, joggers, and bicyclists for transportation and recreation.
