Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo

Ever since the first cowboys saddled up for the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo in 1971, this cultural tradition has lived large, attracting thousands of fans each year. Hosted at the world-famous Corn Palace from which it gets its name, it features an array of impressive rodeo events such as bronco riding, steer wrestling, and bull riding. Besides the rodeo contests, the festival includes a parade, a chili cook-off, and for young challengers, the mutton busting competition.

Dakota Discovery Museum

In addition to the lifelike museum and historic village, which depicts the simple life of frontier voyagers and townsfolk, the artist galleries at Dakota Discovery Museum illuminate the treasured past with striking artwork from artists new and old. Members get unlimited free access to the museum, and free or discount admission to many quality programs.

Starlite Drive-In Theatre

While the theater closed operation back in 2013, it reopened for the 2020 season with remodeled facilities including a new projector, and it has since continued to provide cinematic entertainment for the Mitchell area. The Starlite features the latest films and allows the audience to order and pay for concessions from the convenience of their vehicles.

MUSEUM

Prehistoric Indian Village

3200 Indian Village Rd Mitchell • 605-996-5473 mitchellindianvillage.org The only archeological site in South Dakota open to the public, Prehistoric Indian Village was discovered in 1910 and is preserved by the museum to educate visitors about the first people to inhabit the Great Plains. Through excavations conducted by universities around the world, the preservation society at this museum has learned much about the life of ancient bison hunters and farmers. The museum includes a gift shop and has special events throughout the year.

Area Community Theatre

Located across from the Corn Palace, the theater is a nonprofit run by volunteers who support the arts through quality live entertainment. One full ACT season includes five plays, plus children’s theater and special events. This upcoming season includes “Grease,” a female version of Neil Simon’s “Odd Couple,” and other productions to get fans of the theater returning for more.
