Nonprofit helps train dogs, employs the disabled, earns lots of wet noses Few dog trainers can empathize with the patients that their trained service animals help, but Stacey Payne, owner and founder of Positive Paws K-9 Angels can and does so frequently. Many times per week, in fact. Stacey has disabilities of her own and knows first-hand what it’s like to be shunned, passed over, or otherwise ignored. Growing up was hard for her, and she vowed when she started her for-profit business more than a decade ago that she would train animals to help others so that no one would ever have to know or suffer the pain she had to endure at the hands of others. After the age of 16, Stacey found herself alone and on her own, relying on all animals to help put a smile on her face. They were her role models providing her with love, emotional support, and unconditional love. She remembers instead that as a child she would try to bring home lots of stray animals she’d find living on the streets. Fast forward to today and her Positive Paws K-9 Angels, now a nonprofit, is helping community members from throughout the valley train their dogs to be happy family members as well as official service animals. She loves every moment with the huge batches of canine critters. Positive Paws K-9 Angels hosts between 20 to 50 dogs every weekday on the more than 3-acre ranch she calls home and office.

Since its inception, Positive Paws has graduated more than 100 dogs from its program, and these dogs are active in the community, helping spread happiness and joy to people in skilled nursing homes, hospice centers, senior-living communities, hospitals, schools, and courtrooms to name just a few of the places her doggie graduates comfortably trot into. Her one-on-one specialized training leaves dogs and their owners feeling confident and prepared for all that they might encounter. Stacey ensures that every dog in her charge gets both the necessary and beyond-required obedience training, socialization, and temperament training needed to be more than just an emotional support dog with a badge and vest. Stacey’s dogs leave Positive Paws ready to help others by passing her tests (she is licensed and insured) as well as earning their AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certificates. Graduating dogs are then officially OK’d for a multitude of tasks beyond just helping their owners through companionship. Additionally, Stacey said, Positive Paws K-9 Angels pumps money into
the local economy by employing people with disabilities to help train the dogs. “Around 80% of my staff is differently abled like me, with hopes of having more.” Stacey said. “This made the COVID pandemic especially hard on us because no one could bring their dog in for training and so I had to lay some people off. But I’m pleased to be able to say we weathered that storm and now we’re back, better than ever, and my staff is earning paychecks and contributing to the economic train in the valley regularly. It’s a win-win situation for all – dogs and humans.” Positive Paws trains its staff thoroughly, Stacey said, and they love the dogs as much as she does. “We couldn’t do what we do without the help of the community. Dog people are special people, and I love working with these dogs. I hope to be running Positive Paws K-9 Angels for a long time to come,” she said, rubbing the chin of a big dog who came trotting up to her panting, but not barking, for her undivided attention.
