When Debra Hensley set out to found a radio station created by the people for the people, she knew the end goal was to amplify underrepresented local voices. The Lexington community is full of these voices, and the need for them to be heard is just as great now as it was when the station first started out in 2011. RADIOLEX is the end result. With original programming offered in English and Spanish, it is a go-to information resource for thousands of listeners in the Black, Hispanic, Asian, Immigrant, Refugee, and LGBTQ+ communities of Lexington.
The station got its start when a limited number of low-power FM licenses were made available. Debra jumped at the opportunity, rallying the community, corporate partners, and radio professionals, all with the same vision – a radio station that would belong to the people. Lexington received two of these licenses largely thanks to Debra’s understanding of the public safety role they could play. She shepherded RADIOLEX through the construction and launch of both its stations, WLXL and WLXU. Working with community leaders such as the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department and the Lexington Division of Emergency Management, she recruited an initial volunteer corps of voices not heard on other FM stations.

The community continued to get involved with a grant from the Blue Grass Community Foundation with the Knight Foundation giving RADIOLEX its first grant to buy equipment. Later, this same foundation would be instrumental in funding the stations to quickly respond to the Covid crisis.
In 2019 when immigration issues and images of children in cages were on the forefront of everyone’s mind, Debra recruited Pulitzer Prize winner Jose Antonio Vargas to headline a citywide, public conversation about immigration identity and the definition of community. The event featured a panel of local immigrants, refugees, and specialists in the United States documentation process.
The response it garnered was astounding, and attendees left armed with knowledge and next steps for how to practically work on immigration issues in the community.
When Covid hit the country, RADIOLEX’s role took on new life, advocating for language access so marginalized communities did not miss out on essential health information.
“Misinformation, disinformation, and lack of information present serious threats to safety for all minority communities,” said Mark Royse, executive director at RADIOLEX. “Historical media bias against non-white people means mainstream news outlets are often not fully trusted even when providing critical information.”
Both stations and RADIOLEX’s website provided information in more than 20 languages to the non-English speakers in Lexington’s community. Its work throughout the pandemic and during the vaccine rollout earned the team of volunteer interpreters recognition from the governor’s office, the Kentucky Colonels, and the Kentucky World Language Association.
With the passing of the pandemic, RADIOLEX continues its work in public safety, providing real-time community-level information during severe weather, natural disasters, and other local emergencies.
Something that makes RADIOLEX unique among radio stations is its non-profit status. Its staff and team of volunteers are what give the station life and make it more than worth supporting.
“RADIOLEX can train someone with no experience whatsoever to host a radio show,” Mark said. “We offer a community recording room that folks can reserve to record their podcasts or social videos. [We’re] committed to community-based news

“Debra’s vision, enthusiasm, and stalwart generosity have made RADIOLEX the organization it is today,” Mark said. “As we move into the future, Debra is ensconced as our founder and an example of the values and principles that should guide our work going forward.”
