Now in its fifth edition, Best of the Willamette Valley has quickly established itself as an esteemed local tradition in Oregon’s Mid-Valley region, spotlighting regional businesses. In a marketing world filled with major corporations and digital search platforms, this program uniquely shines by featuring businesses that have garnered
strong local support and recognition. Participation is complimentary for all businesses, and they gain inclusion through nominations in diverse categories such as “Eat & Drink,” “Home & Garden,” and “Things to Do.”
The contest, conducted by NERUS Strategies, LLC, headquartered in Salem, identifies both long-standing favorites and noteworthy newcomers as community favorites. NERUS Strategies, founded in 2017, is noted for managing Best Of competitions across North America, in major markets, including cities like Las Vegas, Seattle, Montreal, Miami, and Dallas Fort Worth.
“While many assume we’re based in larger urban centers like Los Angeles or Seattle, we are deeply connected to Oregon, particularly the Willamette Valley,” explains Bill Cummings, President and CEO of NERUS. Most of
the NERUS team lives locally, in cities such as Salem, Keizer, and McMinnville.
Operating from downtown Salem, NERUS houses their editorial, creative design, operations, sales & marketing, and finance teams, primarily composed of local university graduates with expertise in business, writing, and finance.
“Oregon is home to an incredible pool of talent, and we take pride in our team’s local roots,” states Cummings.
Initiated just before the COVID-19 pandemic, Best of the Willamette Valley provided essential support for businesses during lockdowns, helping them stay connected with customers.
“The contest and magazine were critical in giving a voice to the community and supporting businesses during those difficult times,” notes Neil Potter, Chief Operations Officer and cofounder.
This year, the contest expanded to include businesses from coastal Lincoln County and NERUS will introduce the “Best of the Rose City” focusing on Portland in 2024. This expansion further enriches the local experience of the Willamette Valley.
NERUS is also enhancing its community involvement by establishing a graphic design scholarship with Chemeketa Community College.
Cummings and Potter emphasize their approach of engaging small businesses in community-oriented social media promotion and networking.
“Right from the start, our focus on helping small businesses actively engage with their local community has set us apart,” they comment, highlighting the program’s dedication to fostering local connections.
This year marks the fourth in a row that Rick’s has come forward as presenting sponsor for the Best of the Willamette Valley. The director of marketing Taylor Wick sat down to help illuminate why Rick’s has been a consistent contributor.
“We love what the Best of the Willamette Valley does to highlight local businesses,” said Taylor Wick, the director of marketing for the company. “From the beginning, it has always felt like it was honoring the businesses and the community that supports them. We want to give our support to a competition that is for the community and for businesses.”
She went on to say that the way the contest prioritizes and implements the feedback it receives with regard to local needs is exactly in line with the way Rick’s operates. This dynamic aspect of Rick’s operations continues to be relevant as the industry changes year-to-year.
According to Taylor, all projects across the board, which include design and installations for decks, fencing, gates, and deck covers, have become more complicated and involved. Rick’s customers continue to request more customization options for materials and design, and in response the team has put considerable energy into meeting these new demands.
At the same time, municipal regulations regarding outdoor construction have likewise become more complex over the last few years. Taylor specifically pointed to the shifts in requirements for permits related to construction of upper-level decks, a popular feature in the hilly Salem area.
Luckily, the business’ company culture is one that maintains and values its talented and highly experienced teams, which is key to maintaining quality services.
“Most of our installers have 5-10 years as an average of experience just with our company,” said Taylor. “Their commitment not only to Rick’s but to our greater cause is so clear in the amount of years they’ve dedicated to our company.”
Rick’s has always had an especial focus on enriching its communities since it was created out of the backyard of Rick himself in 1980.
The Rick’s team quickly made a point of supporting local causes but was never quite vocal about its many charitable contributions.
It was not until the COVID-19 pandemic that these community initiatives were united with the same focus under a
single name: the Rick’s Community Support Drive.
The Support Drive, which would become a yearly operation, was founded by Taylor and began in collaboration with Impact Northwest. Together, the teams worked to provide families in need with necessities that were scarce at the time like toiletries and cleaning supplies. Since then, the Support Drive has led Rick’s to contribute money, materials, and labor to organizations that include St. Jude, Make-A-Wish, Michelle’s Love, and dozens more.
