On the Cover: Miami based artist, Hoxxoh (Douglas Hoekzema), painted his masterpiece at 505 Rogers Ave. in downtown Fort Smith during July 2021. It was created as part of the nonprofit 64.6 Downtown’s free and accessible art project called the Unexpected in Fort Smith. The mural is composed of a signal modular mark of a “U” shape, and it is repeated thousands of times to create various patterns. The mark is created by the use of spray paint and (painstaking) freehand while constantly reacting to the wind and textures of the wall.

We are excited to bring you our fourth edition of the Best of River Valley Awards Magazine. This year, the 2024 Best of River Valley contest had over 999,000 votes cast. This is a 163% increase year-over-year! We increased our categories up to 236 different options which resulted in 708 awards.
With our large contest area ranging from Sallisaw to Russellville, and from Mountainburg to Waldron, to be named in the top three in any category is an accomplishment. Our goal is to create economic lift and overall promotion of the River Valley, while engaging the community in celebrating the places, restaurants and local businesses that make our area unique. We highlight efforts to discover and celebrate the businesses, people and places we love most, as voted by our local community: You.
Our news staff reports on stories in River Valley communities from Fort Smith to Clarksville, and everything in between. We understand that focusing on local news and events is what matters most to our readers.
Our sports department covers River Valley prep sports from preseason to playoffs, with game stories, previews and features in our weekly Prep Rally – River Valley Report with Leland Barclay.
In August, we also had our fourth annual River Valley Media Day event in Fort Smith at the River Valley Fellowship of Christian Athletes Office, which provided the opportunity to celebrate the River Valley’s top coaches and players, and to say thank you for their efforts. These videos and photos were added to our River Valley Report Football Preview which was distributed across the River Valley inside the River Valley Democrat-Gazette and in the digital replica app so that everyone could enjoy them.
Additionally in August, the River Valley Democrat-Gazette was the presenting sponsor of the Fort Smith International Film Festival, our What’s Up! Arts & Entertainment Guide was the official program for the festival, and our Best of River Valley was the awards sponsor with our very own award given to local filmmakers for their submitted film. The program and other stories about the film festival are available in the River Valley Democrat-Gazette digital replica app which is available to non-subscribers as well as River Valley Democrat-Gazette Sunday print subscribers.

Empowering Dreams Through Homeownership
Bedy Guzman is marked by her passion for helping others achieve their dreams, and she has the education, persistence, and work ethic to make it happen. Not only that, but she is backed by the area’s No. 1 agency, Keller Williams. Her drive to help others achieve homeownership is rooted in concrete childhood memories.
In 1999, the first Habitat for Humanity house in Van Buren was built for Bedy’s family.
“It’s a memory I will never forget, my family’s dreams came true. We were on news channels and in newspapers as the community came together to help us build our first home,” she recounted. Bedy and her family were originally from El Salvador and have lived in the Fort Smith area since 1997.
Since then, Bedy considers it an honor to be able to help others achieve the same dreams her family did.
“I understand the value, sentiment, effort, and hard work that goes into becoming a homeowner, investor, or business
owner. It requires an agent who is patient, understanding, supportive, hardworking, and a good listener,” she said.
Bedy maintains a diverse portfolio of not just residential home sales, but also commercial, land, and investment properties. She knows that this is not easy and has found that working with an investor is quite different from working with a first-time home buyer.

learner, and do your due diligence,” Bedy said. “When navigating the different markets, knowledge is the key. When working with different clients, being attentive and quick to solve problems and meet needs is the key. Diversity is a challenge because you must be on top of your game, not just one day or two, but all the time.”
On the other hand, Bedy knows her diverse portfolio is an asset and all the skills she has developed only further help her clients.
“I have done deals and made connections that have changed my business and who I am as a person,” she said.
Bedy is a licensed sales associate and member of Keller Williams Platinum Realty. She graduated with honors from Van Buren High School and earned her real estate license in 2021 after
completing her pre-license education at the McGraw Real Estate Academy. Throughout her career, she has worked in administration, logistics management, recruitment, and human resources. She is expanding her knowledge of investments, entrepreneurship, and online commerce.
All this knowledge is enhanced by Bedy’s bilingual offerings for area clients. She is fluent in Spanish and it’s deeply important to her that she can help make advancement more accessible to a broader range of the community. She observed that the Hispanic community is eager to learn and invest in real estate.

With over 52 years in continuous service, Stepping Stone has become more than just a school for special needs children; it has become a comprehensive service provider to people with developmental/ intellectual disabilities and their families in the greater Crawford County area.
Every child can and does learn! Children at Stepping Stone School, are nurtured, taught and loved well by caring therapists and competent teachers. Parents and teachers work together to help these little ones face their unimaginable challenges with courage and determination. Many
also face the challenge of coming from financially disadvantaged homes. While this may limit their access to some of the big pay institutions, nothing limits their access to the school with the most effective program in Arkansas.
Stepping Stone’s Therapeutic Preschool is the only nonprofit, full-time school of its kind in the area. They offer educational training, a full array of nursing services, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and behavior management, as well as family case management and training. Their Infant Care Program,
for ages 6 months to 2 years, serves at-risk infants due to premature birth or low-birth weight as well as those born with Down syndrome or other developmental disorders. This represents an opportunity to begin meeting the needs of children at the earliest possible time, thereby eliminating or significantly reducing their risk for later developmental difficulties.
Today, Stepping Stone provides services to around 275 children on their beautiful Alma campus. These are children that deserve the same opportunities offered to all children. Opportunities to dream, learn, laugh and play.
With 90% of brain development occurring in the first five years of life, early assessment and intervention is critical. Parents, educators and therapists certainly have their work cut out for them.
Stepping Stone leads success results in the state of Arkansas. Research shows an average of 8% of children transitioning from similar programs in Arkansas require full-day special education classes. Last year, less than 1% of children who transitioned from Stepping Stone School required full-day special education classes in their public school. This low percentage places them in the top percentile of effectiveness in the entire nation.
The staff at Stepping Stone recognizes the importance of their work and the role they play in the development of each student. As a result, they have completed over 900 hours of educational training during this school year alone – a phenomenal accomplishment given the Department of Human
Services only requires each staff member to obtain 15 hours per year.
To help their students thrive, Stepping Stone’s teachers and teacher aides are consistently expanding their knowledge on a variety of topics. During the past year, for instance, the early childhood developmental specialists and direct care support staff have been learning ways to make the transition between school and home easier for their students.
“Professional development trainings allow me to expand my knowledge base in different areas,” said Kristina Yones, an Arkansas Better Chance teacher at Stepping Stone. “The more training I receive, the more knowledge and insight I gain. Developing new skills and learning the best practices according to the latest standards in education will help me become the best educator I can be.”
Turning Disabilities Into Capabilities
Jobs+Plus, the vocational division of Stepping Stone, works to meet the needs of adults, ages 18 and over, with developmental/ intellectual disabilities. They offer job training and daily living skills to help these individuals become as independent as possible. This, in turn, builds their self-esteem and allows them to make a positive contribution to their community. Stepping Stone’s adult program also provides independent living opportunities, transportation and supportive living services, as well as a 24-hour medical intermediate care facility. Stepping Stone’s adult program currently serves 80 individuals.
