EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO REACH FOR THE STARS
Brianna Clemente’s decision to open Lucky Star Dance Company in Happy Valley in June 2022, just a few weeks after she graduated from Penn State, was met with some skepticism. She mostly heard scuttlebutt like “there are so many studios here already,” she said. And, of course, some people thought she was too young.
But Brianna, 24, known as Miss Bri to her nearly 200 dance students, knew she had something unique to offer, and her fresh approach has proven to be something families were seeking.
“First and foremost, I wanted to create a space that is safe and welcoming for every student and an experience that prioritizes well-being and personal development in dance and beyond. The growth of the studio in just two years has been validation,” Miss Bri said.
Located on the second floor of the North Club gym on Martin Street in State College, Lucky Star is expanding into additional space in the building to accommodate more students. The studio offers all styles of dance and boasts a certification in Acrobatics Arts and has a faculty with professional experience in classical ballet, hip hop, contemporary and jazz, for ages 2 through adult, plus a competition team.
“From my own experience growing up as a dancer and young choreographer and teacher, I believe that dance is not exclusive to a specific body type or certain strengths and skills,” Bri said. “Naturally we focus on technique as the foundation and on developing skills, but we also help each dancer showcase their strengths, whether that’s acrobatics, turns, dynamics, musicality, etc. There’s space for all types of dancers to succeed and they all deserve the attention they need to thrive.”
Miss Bri knows this message is extremely important in the age of social media and the popularity of televised dance competitions.
“It can be tempting to start comparing yourself to others. I want my dancers to know that what makes them unique can be what makes them shine,” she said.
Ultimately, the goal is to grow good humans and build lifelong friendships, which begins with respect for self and others. In classes and on our team, we emphasize the value of learning leadership, teamwork, work ethic, empathy and other values,” Bri said.
When it comes to dance instruction, there are a few core principles that are constant at Lucky Star. Safety is paramount. The company’s instructors are certified in Acrobatic Arts, for example, and go through detailed background checks. Lucky Star also utilizes various resources for mental health and well-being.
“And, artistically, our key ingredient is storytelling. You may be the most skilled dancer, but did you make the audience feel something? Beyond athleticism and skill, dance should convey emotion. That’s something we strive for, always,” Bri said.
The Lucky Star Dance Company competition team, which offers different levels of time and financial commitment based on what works for each family, has built a reputation for dances that bring powerful stories to life. Last season, the team’s senior contemporary routine entitled “Not All Wounds are Visible,” addressed the issue of suicide and received the Making an Impact Award from a national judging organization, Impact Dance Adjudicators.
The dance resonated deeply with the audience and the dancers.
“Presenting important issues through dance gives our performances real meaning and gives us opportunities to reflect on these topics together, as a team and as friends,” said recent Lucky Star graduate, Julia Huntsinger.
As the studio continues to grow, Bri is excited to continue developing the home that she’s building for recreational and competition dancers and credits her students and families for its rapid progress so far.
“Our families are the life force of the studio, and I don’t take that for granted for a second. I am so fortunate to be surrounded by their constant love and support and am so grateful they are taking this journey with me. We are truly a family,” Bri said.
