2019 New Hampshire

Pumpkin Festival

October 18 & 19

L

aconia’s fall classic, the New Hampshire Pumpkin Festival, takes place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 18 and 19. As always, the festival will feature thousands of jack-o’lanterns, and tens of thousands of people will come to see them. Bring your family, friends and pumpkins to downtown Laconia, where you’ll find lots to do and plenty of great food and entertainment. The Pumpkin-Eye View will be back so you can get that shot of the festival from on high. Karmen Gifford, president of the Lakes Region Chamber, promises it “will be a spectacular street festival offering more artistry, creativity to celebrate fall.” New this year will be the Gunstock Outdoor Adventure Expo, offering many of the experiences that make New Hampshire a destination for so many: skiing, fishing, hiking, boating, motorsports, and more. The Expo will be held at Hector’s Fine Food and Spirits, located on Beacon Street West, near the rides that will be on display in the Jumpin’ Jack Car Show.

Page 6 / Lakes Region Fall Fun Guide 2019

Here’s some of the festival’s returning highlights: • The Harley-Davidson Hideout stage will feature two live bands midday Saturday, plus demo rides. • A zombie walk at 6:30 p.m. Friday. • Kiddie rides by Miller Amusements between Main and Pleasant streets both days. • An official pumpkin-carving station at Veterans Square. • Pump-canal-ly – Canal Street will feature children’s games and activities. • A beer garden tent on Beacon Street run by the 405 Pub & Grill. The festival will go on rain or shine from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday and all day and evening Saturday. To learn more about the NH Pumpkin Festival and keep up with the updates to the event, see www. nhpumpkinfestival.com.

Lakes Region Breweries Hop to It

T

here’s a long list of unique recreation opportunities in the Lakes Region, and if you’re looking to pair those with an equally unique beer, there’s a growing list of local breweries happy to help.

Hobbs Brewing

In Ossipee, near the intersection of Routes 16 and 25, is Hobbs Tavern and Brewing Company. The brewer there, Randy Booth, produced just over 1,000 barrels of beer last year with the six-barrel system. However, Hobbs is looking to soon become one of the biggest craft brewers in the state when it opens an additional 20-barrel system within the next few months. Hobbs’ beers can be found in specialty beer stores around the region, or at its restored farmhouse tavern. Booth has made an impression with his ability to nail traditional styles. For example, his One Arm Farmhouse Ale, a saison, was awarded a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival. He also isn’t afraid of a curveball, though. He used a batch of local maple syrup this past spring to fortify a Scottish

Wee Heavy batch, and his “Salinity Now” line pairs sour fruit flavors with just a pinch of salt. Booth said that Hobbs will be brewing twice as much beer next year as they did last year, and he will slowly ramp up production from there, with an eye on protecting quality. At some point, one of his beers might emerge as the brewery’s signature offering, but he’s more interested in being known for how good his beer is rather than its style. “We touch on everything in terms of beer styles. One of the things I focus on is quality,” Booth said. “What we really want to do is make better beer every day.”

Kettlehead

In Tilton, not far from some of the region’s best mountain biking, is Kettlehead Brewing, located on Route 3 near the Franklin town line. The seven-barrel brewery will celebrate its second anniversary on Nov. 1, and even though it hasn’t been open very long, it quickly made a name for itself with its New England-style

Page 10 / Lakes Region Fall Fun Guide 2019

IPAs. New England IPAs utilize hop strains that impart fruit juice flavors and scents, and they are typically unfiltered, to make for a hazy appearance and thicker mouth feel. Their flagship beer, “The Agent,” qualifies as a New England IPA. Kettlehead’s list of beers includes double IPAs and imperial IPAs, which are brewed with more grain, resulting in a higher original gravity – a term used to describe how saturated with sugar from the grain the beer is prior to fermentation. The higher original gravity translates to a higher alcohol percentage, because there’s more sugar for the yeast to consume. The challenge for a brewer is to balance the maltiness and alcohol with sufficient hop flavor. Brewers and owners Nate Wolfenden and Sam Morissette have been up to the task, as ratings for their beers on third-party sites typically earn four out of five stars. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to get a pint of “Quest,” a double version of “The Agent,” which is their hardest beer to keep in stock. see BREWS page 32

Choices Abound in the Lakes Region

P

By Adam Drapcho THE LACONIA DAILY SUN

eople think of the Lakes Region as a place to go boating, while hikers travel further north. But here’s something you should know if you’re coming to central New Hampshire – there’s great hiking here, too. While there are hiking trails all around the Lakes Region, the best places to start exploring are the peaks of the Belknap Range, and the trail systems at the Castle in the Clouds property in Moultonborough. The Belknap Mountains line the southern shore of Lake Winnipesaukee. Mount Major in Alton is by far the most popular hike, and with good

reason – its summit offers commanding views of Lake Winnipesaukee, and is less than 2.5 miles from the parking lot off of Route 11. But that parking lot often overflows, as Major is often majorly crowded, especially on nice hiking days. There’s good news, though – the rest of the Belknaps receive only a fraction of

Major’s traffic, and their peaks are nearly as scenic. Belknap Mountain, the tallest of the range, has a fire tower at its top. Piper Mountain is another notable peak, thanks to the makeshift furniture that has been created out of granite

On Oct. 24 at Church Landing in Meredith, more than 400 people are expected to sample fine foods and craft beverages offered by local businesses in support of Lakes Region Community Services. Now in its seventh year, Lakes Region Uncorked has proven to be among the area’s showcase charity tasting events. “Uncorked generates excitement and enthusiasm every year, but last year’s event reached a new level. Fine food tables, craft beverage vendors, auction items and Wall of Wine raffles filled Church Landing from one end to the other. It was a fabulous night for everyone involved and the largest fundraiser ever for us,” Rebecca Bryant, LRCS president and CEO, said about last year’s event. “It is a testament to the community spirit of the Lakes Region to see this event grow along with the support LRCS receives for its mission from sponsors, guests, vendors and donors. Uncorked 2018 brought in over $50,000 to support the LRCS Foundation in support of LRCS programs and services.”

Biking

in the Lakes Region

F

or decades, those who know the trails of central New Hampshire have disappeared into the woods on their mountain bikes. But for visitors, it was hard to know where to find a trail that was built for two wheels – or where bicycling was even permitted. That has changed in the past decade, as the New England Mountain Bike Association has developed two large trail systems, each offering miles of terrain for beginners and experienced riders. Those two, in combination with the riotous Highland Mountain Bike Park, have turned the Lakes Region into a destination for trail bike riders. The first system in the region to receive the NEMBA treatment is found within the 2,500 acres of Franklin Falls Dam, operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers and accessed via Federal Dam Access Road in Franklin. NEMBA began a partnership with the USACE in 2007, and has since developed 10 miles of trails on the property, half of which is listed as “Easy” and only one mile is considered “Difficult.” see BIKING page 22

In the nearby town of Hill, NEMBA is working with another partner, the Lakes Region Conservation Trust, to provide mountain biking opportunities on the Page Hill property. Work began in 2011, and currently features seven miles of challenging riding. The property is accessed via Murray Hill Road in Hill, and NEMBA’s plans call for up to 15 miles of riding there someday. Then there’s the locals’ secret spots, including Ahern Park in Laconia and Ramblin’ Vewe Farm in Gilford – just don’t tell anyone how you learned about them. But the biggest mountain biking thrills are found at Highland Mountain Bike Park. Highland was a lift-serviced ski area until 2006, when its lifts were converted to use for bicyclists.

Highland’s terrain is now covered with trails built for gravity-fueled runs, with features that allow riders to pick various lines and to push their boundaries. But newcomers to the sport are welcome, too. For those just interested in exploring downhill mountain biking, Highland offers its “find your ride” package. For $129, the package includes a one-day lift pass, an hour of coaching, and a rental of a bike, helmet and safety equipment. Highland keeps the fun going through the fall. The park will host the “Women’s Freeride Festival” Sept. 21-22, and is open until Nov. 16-17, when it closes out the season with its “S’ender Weekender.”

he WOW (WinnisquamOpechee-Winnipesaukee) Trail is a multi-use rail trail in the City of Laconia enjoyed by bikers, walkers and runners of all ages. Built within the state of New Hampshire-owned railroad right of way, the trail currently spans from Elm Street in Lakeport to downtown Laconia, and then on to the Belmont town line, where it meets with Belmont’s Winnisquam Scenic Trail, creating nearly 5 miles of continuous trail between Lakeport and Belmont. The first phase of the WOW Trail, which opened in 2010, connects Lakeport and downtown Laconia. The second phase opened in fall of 2016 and continues the trail from downtown Laconia’s train station, past Pitman’s Freight Room, and Laconia’s Bartlett Beach to the Belmont town line where it meets with Belmont’s Winnisquam Scenic Trail at Belmont’s Leslie Roberts Beach. This Belmont section winds through the woods and offers picturesque views of Lake Winnisquam. Together, the WOW Trail and Belmont’s Winnisquam Scenic Trail offer users

Page 26 / Lakes Region Fall Fun Guide 2019

opportunities to stop for a picnic, swim or venture off the trail to shop and grab a snack or lunch at one of downtown Laconia’s restaurants and shops along the way. First conceptualized as the Lakes Region Bikeway System in 1982 by the Lakes Region Planning Commission and the City of Laconia, the WOW Trail is a part of a renewed regional rail trail effort that aims to connect Meredith, Weirs Beach, Lakeport, Downtown Laconia, Belmont, Tilton and Franklin with New Hampshire’s Northern Rail Trail. Parking and WOW Trail access: Convenient parking is found near the WOW Trail trailhead in Lakeport at the Lake Opechee Inn & Spa, downtown Laconia and Laconia’s Bartlett Beach. Additional parking and trail access is available at the Belmont town beach within the Leslie Roberts Recreation Area and a limited number of designated parking spaces are also available adjacent the Belmont trailhead near Osborne’s Agway, just shy of the Mosquito Bridge in Belmont. BREWS from page 10 For their first anniversary, Kettlehead concocted a quadruple IPA with a staggering 1.101 original gravity in honor of their anniversary date. That resulted in an alcohol content of 12.5%, requiring special dispensation from the liquor commission. Wolfenden said they’ll come up with something different for their second anniversary, but to find out, you’ll have to visit the Tilton brewery on Nov. 1.

Twin Barns

The building for Twin Barns Brewing, located on Route 3 in Meredith, is a pair of old barns that were conjoined some time ago. And the beer operation was created when the craft beer passions of owners Dave Picarillo and Bruce Walton

were paired with the talents of brewer Sam Clemens, who was lured away from Long Trail in Vermont to make the beer at Twin Barns, which opened in July of this year. Clemens has a 10-barrel system to play with, and though Twin Barns has a food menu, it’s the beverages that are the star of the show. In fact, the experience there is unlike a conventional restaurant. Orders are placed at the bar, rather than with wait staff, and guests can seat themselves at long, picnic-style tables, where they can avail themselves of a collection of board games, or open up a laptop. “Stay six hours if you want to hang with your friends,” Walton said. “Come here and work, we don’t care.” “This is a taproom,” said

Rob Finneron, one of the owners of Hobbs Tavern and Brewing Company, pours a tasting glass. Beth Deutsch, sales manager, and head brewer Randy Booth look on. (Adam Drapcho/The Laconia Daily Sun)

Picarillo. “A place you can come and relax.” Twin Barns has easydrinking ales, a New England IPA, a porter and a stout, but their early sales leader is the “Lake Cruiser,” a hazy double IPA with fruity hop notes.

They might expand to begin canning and distributing their beers, but for now, the best place to sample them is right at the taproom – and especially on Sept. 28, when they’ll host an Octoberfest party.

Castle in The Clouds T

he Lucknow Estate, known best as the Castle in the Clouds, sits atop the Ossipee Mountain Range in Moultonborough. It was built in 1913-14, and opened to the public in 1959, an example of Arts and Crafts architecture and living in harmony with nature. Breathtaking views await visitors, who can take a self-guided tour of the home, which is preserved as if time stood still in the early 1900s. The estate is open daily through Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with trolleys departing from the Carriage House to the mansion every 15 minutes. On Sept. 12 and 26, and

Oct. 10 and 24, come for “Castle After Hours, an opportunity to explore the home when the state goes quiet and the stars begin to fill the sky. The rooms of the home take on a special ambiance and offer a new perspective on what life was like in the mansion. The ticket price includes crudites and one beverage, best enjoyed on the lake-view terrace while admiring the sunset and surrounding fall foliage. Bring the costumes and children for the Halloween Pumpkin Walk on Saturday, Oct. 19. Stroll through the woods and trick-or-treat down the jack-o-lantern-lit trail with not-so-scary surprises along the way. Then, stay

Race Against the Clock LACONIA — Think you’re pretty smart? Smart enough to solve a complex series of puzzles before a 60-minute timer runs out? How about if you’re able to bring a few sharp friends with you? That’s the premise behind escape rooms, a category of gaming businesses that set up rooms that challenge people to solve numerous problems. Escape rooms are a real-time, analog offshoot of the electronic and board gaming industries. The Lakes Region got its first escape room just a few years ago. So, is it a fad, or a new fixture on the entertainment scene? There are now three in the area: the Escape Hour House in Gilford, The Escape Room Experience in Laconia, and Crack the Code in

Meredith. Can the region really support three similar businesses? Two home-grown entrepreneurs recently bet on the likelihood that escape rooms are here to stay. Jordan Tankard, 37, and Chris McCarthy, 28, see escape rooms as a burgeoning entertainment opportunity with room to grow and develop. The Escape Room Experience, located on Main Street in the city’s parking garage building, was founded by Lori Harding as the region’s first escape room. The other two local escape room businesses also have a few challenges each and McCarthy said, oncebitten escape room attendees aren’t shy about traveling further and further afield for a new challenge. That’s why they don’t con-

sider other nearby escape rooms to be competitors. Rather, they each help infect locals and visitors with a desire to visit other escape rooms. “The one thing that took me by surprise was how much of a team experience it is,” Tankard said. “If you go in with family and friends, you will fall into roles, and those teams do very well.”

Tankard said he’s not surprised that some might think that escape rooms might fade away. However, he said he sees a growth trend in the opposite direction. “Any time people come up with some new thing to do for fun, there are those questions,” he said. “As a young industry, this has just scratched the surface of possibility.”

T

he Belknap Mill is a unique historic gathering place celebrating the Lakes Region’s cultural heritage through arts, education and civic engagement. There is programming yearround, and this fall, the Belknap Mill will host a dinner on Sept. 12 to celebrate Laconia’s annual Multicultural Day.

The Mill also goes big with the Pumpkin Fest. The Belknap Mill will host Pumpkin Bingo on Oct. 18, and, on Oct. 19, a Great Pumpkin Cook-Off and the Riverside Duck Derby. To get in on the derby, stop by the Mill on the day of the race, or email operations@belknapmill.org or call 603-524-8813.

The Christmas season is another great time to visit the Belknap Mill. A Yuletide Traditions program is planned for Dec. 1; the Festival of Trees will be held Dec. 5 through 8, and; the 11th Annual Holiday Bazaar is scheduled for Dec. 14. For more information visit, belknapmill.org.

Halloween Safety Tips

603-937-1545 Now offering year round property maintenance and service.

• Make sure trick-ortreaters can see and be seen. • Use face makeup instead of masks. • Give kids a flashlight to light their way. • Add reflective tape to costumes and trick-ortreat bags. • Use flame-resistant costumes. • Plan the trick-or-treat route in advance – make sure adults know where children are going. • Walk, don’t run. • Only visit homes that have a porch light on. Accept treats at the door – never go inside. • Walk only on the sidewalks, not in the street. If no sidewalk is available, walk at the edge of the roadway, facing traffic.

• Look both ways before crossing the street, and cross only at the corner. • Don’t cut across yards or use alleys. • Don’t cross between parked cars. • Use extra caution if driving. The youngsters are excited and may forget to look both ways before crossing. • Make sure a grown-up checks the goodies before eating. • Make sure to remove loose candy, open packages and choking hazards. • Discard any items with brand names that you are not familiar with.
