One-hundred and seventy-one Raiders rode off into the sunset — literally — Friday night in Clinton as Midway High School graduated its 59th class. Parents Renee Moore and Manuel Rivera snagged seats second from the front along the aisle — one of the best spots in the Sampson County Agri-Expo Center to secure video. They waited for their son, Jake Rivera, to graduate. “We’re excited,” Mr. Rivera said. “This is a one-time experience.” “We’ll do it again in four years,” Ms. Moore said. That’s when Jake will graduate from Methodist College. Senior Class President Cole Baxley was the first student to speak following the national anthem performance from the senior
members of the Midway band. “At the conclusion of tonight’s ceremony we’ll continue our journey ... ,” he began. “We’re graduating and it’s our time to continue our education, to make a difference in the world.” He went on to say education is not just school, but life. He recognized the empty seat which would have been occupied by Ryan Michael McFarland who died May 15, 2016. He died at home when a truck he was working on fell on him. A moment of silence was held for him. Two school board members, both from the Midway district — Kim Schmidlin and Tracy Dunn — offered the invocation and benediction. “As they depart from our care, I ask that you have grace and mercy on their lives,” Mrs. Schmidlin prayed. Kara Holland, in her salutatory

address, specifically thank her mother and individual teachers. She also addressed her classmates. “I’m humbled to stand before such a hard-working class,” she said. “These past four years we’ve worked toward the same goal — graduation. Today we become part of the real world.” The all-girl quartet The Precious Jewels sang “Whenever You Remember.” Principal Monty Strickland recognized students for outstanding achievements asking the top 10 in the class, Beta Club members, Academically Gifted, N.C. Scholars, Arts Education Honor Society members, Career and Technical Honor Society members and Career and College Promise graduates to stand. He said Midway students were offered $4.5 million in scholarships. One of the big winners — $114,000 — went to Midway Valedictorian Kasey McLamb. She’s going to Catawba College to study pre-med. She talked about failure and how she was excited about being valedictorian, but afraid of giving the speech. She said you learn from failure. “Everytime you fail, you are one step closer to success,” she said. Blythe Best and Lindsey Holt addressed the audience in their roles as co-presidents at the student government. “On behalf of the student body ... thank you,” Lindsey said. “Class of 2018, we did it!” Mr. Strickland said, “This is a special close-knit class. Take the failure and make yourself a better person because of it. My wish is you all continue to be winners like you are tonight.” 2018

BY RICK CURL Of The Record Staff For South Johnston High School Principal Dr. David Pearce, graduation is always a time for reflection, praise and above all marking the success of his graduates. It was no different Friday night when the class of 2018 took to the school gym for the final time. “I think it’s like any year, it’s bittersweet,” he said. “Some of these kids, I’ve seen them since they’ve been in kindergarten because I had them in elementary school.” Dr. Pearce characterized this year’s class as one that has seen plenty of changes through the course of their young lives. He noted this both during commencement and while reflecting in the moments prior to the ceremony. “It’s been a class that has seen a lot of change since they’ve been
in school,” he said. “I had a kid tell me the other day the iPhone wasn’t out when he started school, it was kind of an ah-hah moment for me. This group of kids has seen change faster than any graduates of them all.” For most of the students, Friday’s ceremony was the first step to their future. Among them were a pair of friends who could be seen outside the building, laughing and talking as they got ready for the ceremony. Chloe McFarland and Kaitlyn Grice were both in a good mood as they anxiously awaited their big moment. Both girls have plans of continuing their education, then give back to the school. “I’m excited, I’m finally out of high school, which is amazing,” Chloe said. “I’m going to go to college and get my (teaching assistant) license so I can work at South Johnston.” It’s the same story for Kaitlyn, she wants to give back and share what she has learned through the years, she was already to start the next chapter in her life. “We worked our butts off and we got here to see us walk across the stage,” she said. “It’s about me being happy and graduating.”
Congratulations

For Chloe it was just as gratifying. “It was tiring, but it was worth it,” she said. “That’s for sure.” When the class finally made it to the magic moment where they begin their transition to fullfledged adulthood, class Valedictorian Eryn Godwin said as the end of school loomed, it was when a realization was made by all. “The first few months of school were a breeze, then November came,” she said. “It was the time for us to start thinking about our future. Whether it was applying for college, applying for jobs or enlisting in the military, it was the time when things started to get real.” She summarized the final year of high school as one of memories and fun. “Our last semester flew by in the blink of an eye,” she said. “We celebrated Unity Week and our very last prom. To senior night, to senior picnic, they were some of the best days of our lives.” Joining the class of 2018 were the Junior Marshals who escorted them into their final moments as students. Led by Chief Marshal Elizabeth Danger, the junior marshals were Kandis Adams, Logan Baker, Logan Blackmon, Marshal Blackmon, Nayeli Cortes, Seth Creed, Alexis Edwards, Paul Eldridge, Colin Fite, Lindsay Hall, Savannah Hines, David Honeycutt, Brendan Hudson, Emma Jernigan, Jessica Johnson, Carmen Keene, John Austin Lee, Brandon Lushene, Karson Massengill, Shelesie Melendez, Emily Murray, Dawson Norris, Phillip Powell, Jackson Raynor, Tracy Scism, Tyler Strickland, Savannah Wilson, Allison Wise and Brenna Wood. 2018

Hobbton High School Hobbton Unleashes Its Wildcats Into The World BY LISA FARMER Managing Editor
Hobbton High School English teacher Frances Pate was savoring the final moments. She was ending her 21-year teaching career, her 17th as a Hobbton High School teacher. It was Friday afternoon in the Sampson County Agri-Expo Center and Hobbton was graduating its 62nd year of seniors. There were 128 in this year’s class. She was offering hugs and straigtening of stoles. “This is my last group of babies,” she said. “This group is a very special group. They’re very close to each other. They look out for each other.” Parents and students had arrived early and filled the center. Janet Thompson’s parents, Ronnell Jones and Kim Williams, were seated near the front. Janet is going to Howard University. Ms. Williams said she was “proud,” but Howard “is a long way from home.” Tyrone Parker was waiting to see his daughter, Anaya Da’Nae Parker. “I’m very excited,” he said. “She said she’s going to Fayetteville Tech and become a mortician.”
Following a spot-on performance of the “Star-Spangled Banner” by Angela Martin, Jennifer Daughtry, principal, welcomed everyone and recognized the top 10 seniors which included Valedictorian Sarah Allison Daughtry and Salutatorian Madison DeLaney Thornton. The the theme of DeLaney’s address was from the Dr. Seuss book, “Oh, The Places You’ll Go.” “You are the you who will decide where to go,” she quoted. “Today is our day ... Our introduction is waiting, so let’s get on our way,” she said. “This journey has been awesome.” Sarah’s speech was inspired by the late N.C. Basketball coach Jim Valvano who famously said, “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.” “Today we get a glimpse of the many doors of opportunity that will be waiting on us,” she said. “We’ve all faced moments where we’ve never given up. I believe that each and every one of you has great potential.” Isaac James Best gave a speech titled “The Value of a Moment.” He said his most memorable times at Hobbton was his involvement in the FFA. He remembered riding to Indiana on a bus to compete and bonding with his classmates.
Alma Mater Hail to thee dear Hobbton High School Praises we now sing. We will cherish and defend thee; Ever loyal be. Hail to the finest school of all, The school we love so dear. Let the name of Hobbton High School Ring out loud and clear.
“I’d like to thank you for the little moments we have together,” he said. Ty Godron Meyer also spoke. His subject was “The Value of a Memory.” He pointed out this was the first class to graduate whose members were born in the 1990s and 2000s. Parents and friends were urged to hold their applause until all the graduates received their diplomas. And the minute that last graduate — Elizabeth Michelle Yost — crossed the stage, thunderous applause and yells filled the auditorium which went on for some time. Ms. Daughtry gave the graduates some encouragement. “Let your heart be your guide. You are the light of the new day, so shine so everyone can see you,” she said. “Class of 2018, congratulations, and I love you.”

A resident of Coats, NC was featured in the newsletter at Ft. Jackson, NC “What influenced me the most to join the Army was the structured and disciplined lifestyle. I’ve always wanted to join the Army and feel like the Army will teach me many valuable skills.” “The Army was what I thought it would be before joining because I have family that briefed me on what to expect, but the food was better than I expected it to be.” “The most challenging thing about Basic Combat Training was the Army Physical Fitness Test; those two miles were no joke.” “I’m a 25B-Information Systems Operator Analyst.” “In 10 years I see myself as a first sergeant or master sergeant.” “I want to offer a few words of wisdom to any one thinking about joining the Army. Make sure you train, listen to those who have authority over you. Don’t use your hands to talk; it will result in you having to do push ups, and run before, during and after Basic Combat Training.” The daughter of the late Michalenia N. Ridges of Coats, NC. A ceremony for the largest class in school history at Harnett Central High School ended a day of celebration Saturday during the fourth graduation in two days at Campbell University. A total of 366 seniors received diplomas at the ceremony. The students were excited as they prepared for the ceremony behind the stage at the John W. Pope Convocation Center on the campus of Campbell University. The convocation center hosted all four Harnett County graduations. “I am ready to go,” graduate Noah Huffstetler said. Noah intends to attend Wake Technical Community College and play on the school’s basketball team. “I have already signed up to go in the Army,” Jax Ginn said. “I am ready.” Students weren’t the only ones celebrating as parents, grandparents and other family members filled the seats almost to capacity. “I am very proud of my son, we finally made it,” parent Rosa Deltoro said.
“You are making history tonight,” Harnett Central Principal Cynthia Gordon said. “You should have pride in what you have accomplished.” Both salutatorian Adam Butler and valedictorian Timmy Xiao addressed their fellow students. “Harnett Central High School has taught us well,” Timmy said. “When people think of our school they think of quality and now we are part of the school’s history.” “You have completed the tutorial and now you are ready for the rest of your lives,” Adam said. Harnett Central was the only one of the Harnett County schools which had a guest speaker. This year’s address was given by former North Carolina State basketball player Scott Wood who now plays professional basketball in Europe. His wife is a former student at Harnett Central. He told students to be ready for the roller coaster of life. “Good and bad things happen to all of us, it is a part of life,” Mr. Wood said. “It is important to learn to control the things you can control.” He also told students not to be afraid of uncertainty. “I encourage you to take risks,” Mr. Wood said. “You will learn quickly that sometimes you will fail and sometimes you will succeed but you have to try new things.”

Cape Fear Christian Academy Cape Fear Graduates End Their High School Careers 16 graduates move to next stage of life. BY TOM WOERNER Of The Record Staff Graduates of one of the area’s best known Christian education schools took their final walk across the graduation stage at ceremonies at Campbell University. The 16 members of the Cape Fear Christian Academy class of 2018 became the academy’s 43rd graduating class since the school near Erwin was founded. It was a celebration of family and friends of the graduates and staff members of the schools. Headmaster Karen Parker provided the welcoming remarks. “This is a celebration of everything good about our academy,” Ms. Parker said. The night was full of inspiring remarks from the school’s top two students and one of the best known television personalities in the area, WRAL television anchor and Harnett County resident Gerald Owens. Mr. Owens encouraged graduates to be careful about their choices. “Choices shape our lives and there is no way we can avoid that,” Mr. Owens said. “Easy choices will get you through each day and the hard choices you make will get you through a lifetime. I would encourage you to look inside yourself when you make choices.” Salutatorian Collin Parker told his classmates to expect to make mistakes. “Mistakes will provide valuable lessons that will make you a better person overall,” Collin said. “Mis22
takes don’t define you. It is how you respond to mistakes that is really important. When we get to the end of our lives we will only be judged for what we have done ourselves.” Collin said the next step in his academic career will be pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. There was a similar message to students from Valedictorian Delaney Cumbie as she addressed the class for the final time. “Without failure, there is no growth,” Delaney said. “Failure is the step ladder of success.” Delaney plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and play on the school’s softball team. Students gathered with family members outside the D. Rich Building following the ceremony. The building houses Turner Auditorium where the graduation exercises were held. One of those was Geremiah Olivera who will stay close by to continue his education next year. He plans to study physical therapy at Campbell University. He said he expects the major change in his life to slowly settle in. “I probably won’t notice a lot of things different until I start going to class at Campbell,” Geremiah said. “That is when it will probably hit me.” The school presented the first Terry Godwin Legacy Award. The award was given to graduate Nakira Slater. The award was given in honor of the late Terry Godwin who passed away last summer. Mr. Godwin was a frequent volunteer at the school and his wife, Angela, is a long-time employee of the school and currently leads the middle school department.

Western Harnett High School Over 300 Western Eagles Soaring On To New Heights
BY SHAUN SAVARESE Of The Record Staff
Nearly 350 newly matured Eagles took flight this weekend, leaving the nest to begin new lives. Western Harnett High School held its graduation ceremony at the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center on campus, at Campbell University Saturday afternoon. The Eagles’ senior class of 2018 earned $2.7 million in scholarships this year. There are 10 students who earned North Carolina Scholar distinctions, and 117 who graduated with honors. Following the presentation of colors by Western Harnett High School JROTC members Adrian Campos, Fernando Villanueva, Clayton Emmett and Dante Kelly, Benjamin Mooring sung the national anthem to a senior class with 35 future military members. The invocation was led by Dylan McDonald. “Today is the day of celebration and a blessing,” Dylan said. “We look down the path that we have traversed this far and what colossal heights we’ve climbed.” Before the ceremony began, the school’s principal, Chris Pearson, expressed his pride in the class of 2018, saying, “They have been a big part of helping Western take the next step, and there is a ton of potential in them.” The arena was filled to capacity, prompting the principal to ask the crowd to make room for those standing to sit, per a request from the fire marshal. Student Body President Jordin Sancho introduced the parent advisory board, as well as school board member Eddie Jaggers, Chief Technology Officer Jennifer Byrd, Assistant Superintendent of Auxillary Services 23
“
Thank you is the best prayer that anyone could say.

—— Western Harnett Senior Class President and Salutatorian Collyn Smith, quoting author Alice Walker. Brookes Matthews and Harnett County Schools Superintendent Dr. Aaron Fleming. Before they delivered the biggest speeches of their young lives, Western Harnett High School Valedictorian Rebecca Layne Parker and Salutatorian Collyn Smith spoke briefly about their high school experience and their plans going forward. Collyn, who is also senior class president, was “more excited than nervous.” He had a heavy hand in shaping Saturday’s ceremonies, as member of the senior class graduation committee. Rebecca was also little nervous, but said she was ready to put graduation behind her. The valedictorian will attend N.C. State University in the fall, majoring in environmental science and plans to go on to graduate school. One teacher, with whom she had never studied under before, made a special impression on Randolph, telling her to just be herself and to keep reading. Alicia Ferguson taught AP literature to both Randolph and Smith, and has taught at Western for five years. Near the end, Devin SerranoDiaz then sang the class song, “Today My Life Begins,” by Bruno Mars. There were 35 commencement marhsals, lead by Myra Holder and Brayden Johnson. They were Keaton Shaw, Isabelle Preston-Crosby, Elaine Garcia-Estrada, Cody

Jordan G. Lee, D.M.D
DOWNERS GROVE, ILLINOIS (May 01, 2018) – Jordan G. Lee, D.M.D., of Benson, NC, has completed the Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree at the College of Dental Medicine – Illinois (CDMI) at Midwestern University. An official graduation ceremony and conferring of degrees was held on the Midwestern University campus in Downers Grove, Illinois on Thursday, May 24th.
It looked like a sea of baby blue when graduating seniors filled the floor of Campbell University’s John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center. Dressed in their light blue cap and gowns with black and white stoles — the school’s colors — the Overhills Jaguars were the first in Harnett County to walk across the stage with their ceremonies Friday night. “It’s been a pleasure to work with this year’s students,” said Principal Steve Matthews. “We had 363 seniors and all 363 are walking across the stage tonight,” reported Mr. Matthews. “Some are sprinting across the finish line and some are running.” The class of 2018 valedictorian, Sarah Martin of Sanford, plans to attend North Carolina State University and study computer engineering. Salutatorian Haleigh Stackpole, also of Sanford, has committed to play soccer at Ole Miss (the University of Mississippi) where she plans to major in biology.
Haleigh actually graduated in January and came back to walk with her class during graduation ceremonies. When speaking to her fellow classmates, Haleigh talked about procrastination. “Due tomorrow means due tomorrow,” she said. “Do not procrastinate on any of your dreams,” she encouraged graduates. “We cannot procrastinate on living our lives.” In her valedictorian’s speech, Sarah said, “We have been waiting for this day forever thinking it would not come soon enough.” “Don’t forget to live in the present,” Sarah said. “We get so caught up in the future that we don’t take time to appreciate the present. Think about each step you take ... take time to appreciate it.” DéShawn Hooks had even more reason to become overcome with emotion during the processional when he heard screams from his family and spotted his older sister, Desree Davis-Hooks, who traveled to Harnett County from Fort Drum, N.Y., where she is stationed while serving in the military. DéShawn had not seen his sister in a year and a half. Before the graduation ceremonies actually began, there was a lot of celebrating going on and many photos taken. Camryn Grissom and parents
Michelle and Erick Grissom of Spring Lake celebrated with family and friends at Sports Zone in Lillington prior to graduation. Camryn and her friends and fellow graduates, Skyler Farrar and Malia Hess, posed for pictures together before heading to the Convocation Center. Malia said she plans to study nursing when she starts as N.C. Central University. She already earned her certified nursing assistant certification while in high school and will start at NCCU as a sophomore. Camryn and Skyler have both joined the National Guard and plan to attend East Carolina University. Teacher and soccer coach Sydney Gordon posed for photos with two of her players Christin Donovan, a junior marshal, and graduate Sidney Dyer. “Top 10,” said Sidney, who noted she graduated No. 10. “Academics and athletics,” Ms. Gordon said proudly of her players. Overhills’ junior marshals also included chief Stephanie Decker, Robert Brown, Makenna Brunson, Bethaney Deuschle, Ariel Drewry, Hannah Flick, Cheyenne Goldwire, Ayres Grice, Kayleigh Linder, Kanan Maeda, Gabriel Morehead, Carolyn Oakley, Isaiah Perez, Linda Rodriguez, Hadley Stewart, Zackary Swisher, Edwin Velazquez and Aja Wilson.

Different Ways To Showcase A Diploma (MS) — After all the pomp and circumstance of graduation festivities, graduates are left holding a highly symbolic piece of paper that has the potential to impact the rest of their lives. Graduates can exhibit pride in their academic accomplishments by prominently displaying their diplomas in their homes. The following are some ideas about how graduates can showcase their diplomas, whether those diplomas were earned in the recent past or decades ago. Frames One of the more traditional ways to display a diploma is to have the document professionally mounted and framed under glass. Consider framing with UV-protective glass to prevent the diploma from fading through the years. Avoid having your diploma permanently affixed to the back of a frame or plaque so it can be removed should the frame or plaque become damaged. Much like a cherished piece of artwork, diplomas can be displayed on walls in a 30
home. They can fit in well as conversation pieces in a sitting room, home office, hallway, or library setting. Surround With Molding Framed diplomas can be made to look more ornate when built into the design of the room. Coordinate it with bookshelves or molding laid out throughout the space. Some accent lighting can draw further attention to the document. Bound Books For those who would rather not display their diplomas on the wall, consider sealing the diploma in a photo album or have it classically bound in a decorative book. Include photos of graduation or other special accomplishments in one’s school or professional career to complete the book. The diploma also can be scanned and digitally reprinted before being added to a custom-made photo memory book, with the real document tucked away for safe keeping.
Personalized Tables Work the diploma into home decor in another fashion. Graduates who do not plan on moving the diploma can place it into a display case or in a glass peekaboo coffee table. It also can be affixed to a wooden side table

and clear-coated so that it becomes another source of conversation in a sitting room. Diplomas are hard-earned and worthy of display. With some creativity, grads can incorporate their diplomas into their home decor. 2018
