CAMERAPERSON

USA.2016. Director: Kirsten Johnson. Cast: Kristen Johnson, Roger Phenix. Duration: 1hr.42mins. Cert: 15. Venue: Nerve Centre Cinematographer Kirsten Johnson reaches into the enormous trove of footage she has shot over decades travelling around the world. In the film’s most remarkable sequence, a Nigerian midwife attempts to save a barely breathing newborn as Johnson captures the terrifying ordeal in a single, unbroken shot. What is the role of the filmmaker in such situations? What responsibility does the artist have to their subject? These are questions that Johnson poses throughout this fascinating film. “The striking images, haunting, savage and forgiving are like escapees, trying to interact with the impossible.” Anne-Katrin Titze, Eye For Film

MONDAY 10 JULY @ 7PM

HEAL THE LIVING France/Belgium. 2016. Director: Katell Quillévéré. Cast: Tahar Rahim, Emmanuelle Seigner, Anne Dorval. Duration: 1hr.43mins. Cert: 12. Language: French with English subtitles. Venue: Nerve Centre

Heal The Living starts with a wordless and lengthy opening sequence so dreamlike, so beautiful and meditative, that everything that follows is informed by it. Three teenage boys meet up before dawn to go surfing. They huddle together, zipping up their wet suits, and then plunge into the cold, heaving ocean. There is no urgent storytelling impulse at work here – it is the moment that matters: the thrill of standing up on the board, the silence that accompanies challenging physical activity, and the beauty of the waves seen from underneath the surface. The fact that the morning ends in a tragic car accident just intensifies the memory of that opening sequence – its vision of grace, strange beauty and the wonder of the momentary. “Katell Quillévéré’s third feature…shows her humane vision of the interconnectedness of humans and the fragile miracle of life… It is so unique, and ultimately, so powerful.” Shiela O’Malley, Roger Ebert.com JUNE FILMS 7
