MCQUEEN

A personal look at the fearless, rebellious and extraordinary life, career and artistry of Alexander McQueen. Through exclusive interviews with his closest friends and family, recovered archives, exquisite visuals and music, McQueen is an authentic celebration and thrilling portrait of an inspired yet tortured fashion visionary. McQueen’s ragsto-riches story is a modern-day fairytale, laced with the gothic. Mirroring the savage beauty, boldness and vivacity of his design, this film is an intimate revelation of McQueen’s life and work, both tortured and inspired. McQueen celebrates a radical and mesmerising genius of profound influence. NOMINATED FOR BEST DOCUMENTARY AT THIS YEAR’S TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL “The film delivers a staggering visual feast in the footage of these runway shows, rarely seen by those outside the fashion world, and the emotional punch of witnessing an exuberant talent headed toward self destruction.” Eve MacSweeney, Vogue “The brilliant, tortured fashion designer Alexander McQueen gets a documentary portrait worthy of his strange, sensual artistry.” Guy Lodge, Variety “This appropriately flamboyant film explores McQueen’s humble beginnings, his inspirations, his tight knit band of collaborators, his creative process and the violent brilliance of his work.” Wendy Ide, Screen International UK. 2018. THE POST

Steven Spielberg’s exhilarating drama deals with a subject that’s dear to the heart of journalists: themselves! THAT SUMMER

The long lost prequel to GREY GARDENS… That Summer brings back the eccentric world of the mother-daughter duo from the classic documentary Grey Gardens. That Summer presents what was believed to have been lost footage from the summer of 1972, filmed by Peter Beard and Lee Radziwill – sister of Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis. Additional material – shot by Andy Warhol, Jonas Mekas, Albert Maysles, and Vincent Fremont – also gives a unique insight into the dynamics of the former artist community in the Hamptons. “While the Maysles’ acclaimed film makes their affection for their subjects evident, there’s a certain performative quality to the proceedings. That Summer offers a new level of intimacy as well as a wider view, with Beard’s commentary lending compelling context… A must for fans of the Maysles’ film.” Sheri Linden, The Hollywood Reporter Sweden/USA/Denmark. 2017. Director: Göran Hugo Olsson. Cast: Peter Beard, Lee Radziwill, Edith Bouvier Beale, Edith ‘Little Edie’ Bouvier Beale, Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, John Kennedy Jr., Anthony Radziwill. GREY GARDENS

Named by Entertainment Weekly as one of the top fifty cult movies of all time, Grey Gardens was something of an accident as the filmmakers Albert and David Maysles only came across Edith Bouvier Beale and Edith ‘Little Edie’ Bouvier Beale when they were involved in another project – a movie about (Jacqueline Kennedy’s sister) Lee Radziwill’s childhood in the Hamptons. As part of their research, the Maysles brothers were introduced to the reclusive mother and daughter and became captivated by their eccentric world. As a result, they abandoned the Radziwill film and decided to concentrate on the Beales and, a year after meeting the two women, began filming Grey Gardens. “As tender and revealing as it is completely bonkers.” Kate Muir, The Times USA. 1975. Silent Testimony, an exhibition of portrait paintings by Colin Davidson (born Belfast 1968), reveals the stories of eighteen people who are connected by their individual experiences of loss through the Troubles – a turbulent 30-year period in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s onwards. Since 2010, Colin Davidson has become internationally renowned for his series of large-scale portraits of actors, musicians, poets and public figures. While painting these familiar faces he became increasingly preoccupied, not with their celebrity, but more with their status as human beings. This continuing exploration of ‘common humanity’ is the foundation on which Silent Testimony rests. Until this exhibition, the artist, who grew up in Belfast and studied art at the University of Ulster, had not responded overtly to what he witnessed or personally experienced during the Troubles.

Silent Testimony is a powerful response, which reflects on how the conflict has had, and continues to have, a profound impact on thousands of individuals – the injured, their families, the families of those who died and the wider community. Accompanied by artist talk, gallery tours and screening of Hear My Voice, a film inspired by Silent Testimony, directed by Brendan J Byrne. Visit nervecentre.org for further details.

WEDNESDAY 22 AUGUST @ 7PM / NERVE CENTRE

A directionless teenager living on the outskirts of Brooklyn struggles to escape his miserable home life and navigate questions of self identity, as he balances his time between his wayward friends, a potential new girlfriend, and older men he meets online. Unfolding over a single lazy summer, this raw spin on the ‘coming out’ drama offers a brutally unreserved look at masculinity and punch-drunk sexual awakening.

In the mountains of the Eastern Cape in South Africa, a boy from the Xhosa community rebels against the circumcision ceremony that signifies the progression to manhood. An elder, Xolani, is sent to assist, but his ulterior motive is to rekindle an affair with fellow male guide Vija, which signals mortal danger for all three men. This powerful film has manifold scars of battles between old and new, urban and rural, gay and straight.
