SATURDAY 9 APRIL, 10.00PM Venue: The Ivy Bar Tickets: £5 Described by The Sunday Times as ‘a blues singer of real integrity’, Monaghan-based Grainne Duffy succeeds in blending soul, blues and rock in a powerful fusion that never fails to excite live audiences. Influenced as much by the sweet blues power of Fleetwood Mac guitar genius Peter Green as by the raw vocal power of Etta James, Grainne started writing her own songs while still in school, releasing her debut album Out of the Dark in 2008. That collection contained Grainne’s take on Etta’s classic ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’, the song that has become a staple of her live shows ever since. The album propelled ace guitarist Grainne and her powerhouse band out onto the road,
where they have remained ever since, finding time to go back into the studio in 2011 to cut her second album, Test of Time. This collection allowed Grainne to stretch out and include some her wider influences, including the likes of Keith Richards and Bonnie Raitt. Since then, as well as releasing a live album (recorded on the road through Germany), she and the band have continued to roll, playing festivals throughout Europe and more recently in the United States for the first time. And the good news is there’s a third studio album in the pipeline too.

WITH SPECIAL GUEST MANDY BINGHAM SUNDAY 10 APRIL, 4.00PM Venue: The Ivy Bar Tickets: £5 It’s hard to think of an acoustic act who have attracted as much early acclaim as No Oil Paintings – the quartet seem to have come from nowhere and gone straight to the top of many people’s ‘favourite band’ list in next to no time. It’s all based on live performance – a ramshackle punk, bluegrass, country stew that has attracted raves from audiences at Sunflowerfest, Stendahl Festival and most recently, Open House in Bangor, where they went down a storm with summer audiences as the ‘house band’ for the festival. The band consists of Christopher Kelly on resonator, electric guitar and vocals, Sean Doone on banjo and vocals,

James Doone on bass and vocals, and George Sloan on drums and vocals. The band comes to Ards after a busy year, having released a debut self-titled EP in June and playing dates throughout the summer. Support for this special afternoon show will be courtesy of Mandy Bingham, a rising singer songwriter with a sweet voice and some great songs and a performer who attracted a strong response during a recent appearance in Ards as part of the ever popular Friday Night Live concert series.

"Arguably the greatest English folk song performer, writer, collector and editor of them all." Q Magazine
Stevie Scullion aka Malojian
The winner of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2014, Martin Carthy has for more than 40 years been one of folk music's greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures.
For this concert, Martin will share the limelight with two of Northern Ireland’s most extraordinary songwriters, Matt McGinn and Stevie Scullion (aka Malojian), who will perform as a duo, offering harmonies and accompaniment on each other’s material.
His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it. Trailblazing partnerships with Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick and his award-winning wife Norma Waterson and daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums.
Both artists have a strong track record, including peerless reputations as live performers and guitarists, and writers of exceptional material, showcased most recently by Matt McGinn’s Latter Day Sinner (one of the Daily Telegraph’s Best Folk Albums of 2015), and Malojian’s Southlands (shortlisted for the 2015 Northern Ireland Music Prize).
Martin is a ballad singer, a ground-breaking guitarist and authoritative interpreter of new material. Perhaps, most significant of all, are his settings of traditional songs with guitar, which have influenced a generation of artists, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, on both sides of the Atlantic.
