You can also follow along your journey using AR on the Our Place in Space App on your mobile phone! You can download the App in the App store for iOS or GooglePlay for Android. You can follow along on the app anywhere in the world!
Our Place in Space: Derry-Londonerry Location While Our Place in Space takes place in several locations, this is narrative is all about the Derry-Londonderry location! The beginning of the trail is located in Bay Road Park, which can be accessed from the Park entrance located behind Da Vinci's Hotel. Signage will direct you to the start of the trail. The trail begins at the Sun in Bay Road Park, moving along the park by the river Foyle, running through the city centre, before heading across the river to the Waterside greenway to Pluto.
Entrance
Once you arrive in the vicinity, you will see signs showing you which direction to go. The trail starts at Bay Road Park. You start your journey at the Sun in Bay Road Park, travel along the Quayside through the City Centre, across Craigavon Bridge (lower deck) and along the Waterside Greenway to the finish. You may wish to explore the full solar system trail in more than one visit. A round trip from the Sun to Saturn and back is approximately 5km. You can come back and explore the outer planets another day. Make sure to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for your self-guided tour!
The Trail: Bay Road Park Entrance to Mars Loop
The distance from the Bay Park Road entrance to the Sun is approximately 1km. Approximate distances: Sun to Mercury - 90m Mercury to Venus - 90m Venus to Earth and the Moon - 70m Earth and the Moon to Mars - 100m At average walking speed the complete trail will take approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Four bench seats are available in Bay Road Park spread out along the 2.4k route. This trail is mostly level and features a hard bitmac & concrete surface.
The Trail: Mars to Saturn along the riverside pathway to Craigavon Bridge This route is largely based in the City Centre alongside a main road with high volumes of traffic and street level noise. Terrain, surfacing, and gradients are outlined below. The distances from Mars to Jupiter and Jupiter to Saturn are as follows: Mars to Jupiter - 1070m / 1km (approx) Jupiter to Saturn - 1010m / 1km (approx) This trial is mostly level and features a hard bitmac & concrete surface. Bench seat provision at intervals along the trail path from Fort George jetty to Peace Bridge. Trail path sections from Bay Road to Fort George jetty and from Peace Bridge to Craigavon Bridge do not have rest seating.
The Trail: Mars to Saturn along the riverside pathway to Craigavon Bridge This is a mostly level route with some gentle sloping but there are steep path sections without handrails along the Waterside Greenway between Uranus and Neptune that may prove difficult for some visitors to navigate. While this route is mostly set back from the road, there is significant traffic noise on Craigavon Bridge and on sections of the Greenway by the NorthWest Transport Hub (NWTH). The Greenway runs alongside the train tracks between the NWTH and Pluto, which may lead to an increase in noise levels as trains enter and leave NWTH. The distances between Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are as follows: Saturn to Uranus - 2.17km Uranus to Neptune - 3km Neptune to Pluto - 800m Bench seat provision at intervals along the linear walk, except for the Craigavon Bridge crossing. Rest seating is not provided on paths leading from St. Columb’s Park House car park to the main trail path.
Times
The trail is available to view every day. For the best experience, we recommend visiting between 9am and 7pm.
Facilities
There are no toilet facilities or food and drink available at Bay Road Park. Public toilets are available along other parts of the route. Detailed trail maps are available from the Trail Guardians and Volunteers and will highlight public facilities along the route.
