Welcome
EastSide Arts delivers an excellent programme of arts activities throughout the year, bringing the arts direct to the communities of east Belfast and encouraging local artists, writers, musicians and performers to develop and promote their talent. The annual EastSide Arts Festival is always one of the most popular highlights. The ambition of this year’s festival reflects the confidence it has developed, having quickly established itself amongst Northern Ireland’s major multi-arts festivals. The Arts Council, as principal funder of EastSide Arts through Exchequer and National Lottery funds, is proud to be associated with an event and an organisation that continues so successfully to expand opportunities for people to access and to participate in a wide range of high-quality arts, and which is a key contributor to the creative, cultural and economic life of east Belfast. Roisín McDonough Chief Executive, Arts Council of Northern Ireland
“This, we’ve found, and firmly hold it; this, the bedrock of all we do; this, the secret and the fault line: people are what make the East.” Jan Carson. This year’s EastSide Arts Festival is a noisy celebration of the creative energy of the people of east Belfast. We find ourselves in a flourishing time, an exciting time for artists and communities and we have the pleasure of inviting you to come and explore this part of the city, its people and places for yourself, over the eleven days of the festival. We would like to thank our principal funder, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, and funders Belfast City Council and The Executive Office for their vital continuing support. Sincere thanks also to our key sponsors, Arts & Business Northern Ireland, The British Council, Translink, Hewitt & Gilpin and Connswater Shopping Centre and Retail Park for their brilliant support and enthusiasm in being a part of this year’s EastSide Arts Festival. A one-off chance to hear two acclaimed songwriters in a wonderful acoustic setting. Hannah’s voice and her unique melodies have prompted comparisons to the likes of Regina Spektor and Laura Marling, while her fiercely personal lyrics and ‘quietly captivating’ (Culture NI) performances have seen her following blossom across Ireland and beyond. Anthony recently celebrated the release of his seventh album ‘Ink’ with a sold-out launch concert at the Lyric Theatre. This new collection finds him in top form on a series of stripped back, acoustic-based songs dealing with the big themes of love, loss and happiness.
The Swing Gals all-girl vocal collective is renowned for their close harmonies and sophisticated interpretations of jazz, swing, pop and easy listening favourites. The collective comprises Karen Kirby, Marion Jordan, Elaine Pelan, Orla McKeagney, Ruth Jennings and Kathy McKeagney. The girls perform with a variety of lines ups: piano, a swing ensemble and with the Indigo Big Band. They have performed at events all over Ireland, on television and on radio.

By Robert Harbinson Adapted and performed by Sam McCready Directed by Joan McCready Date: Thursday 3 & Friday 4 August Time: 7.30pm-9.30pm Venue: Strand Arts Centre Price: £12 / £10 Tickets: www.strandsartscentre.com Born into a Protestant family in Dee Street, Robert Harbinson is one of our finest writers. Despite the critical success of No Surrender and other volumes of autobiography, all of them mesmerising evocations of life in Ulster during the 1930s and early 40s, Harbinson has largely fallen off the radar. A born storyteller, funny and moving by turn, he celebrates the Orange culture but is keenly aware of his Catholic neighbours, an awareness that, in this adaptation, leads to a powerful epiphany. Prepare to be entertained.

Date: Sunday 13 August Time: 8pm Price: £13.50
Belfast native, Gareth Dunlop, has spent the last few years traveling between the Sister cities of Nashville and Belfast. The poetic vulnerability in his songs and Gareth’s distinctive, soulful voice has led to his music being featured in a wide array of television shows, and soundtrack credits include, Safe Haven, The Best of Me and the upcoming film No Postage Necessary, with Gareth appearing on camera. Gareth’s new album will be released in August and available to buy at the gig. He will be playing with a full band + supporrt.
He may wield an acoustic guitar but Ciaran Lavery doesn’t conform to the sensitive singer-songwriter archetype. In 2014, Lavery’s Kosher EP and Not Nearly Dark album went global, with the tracks ‘Shame’ and ‘Left For America’ racking up more than 60 million listens on Spotify.
“A voice that could tame dinosaurs…” Culture Northern Ireland
The plaudits kept coming in 2015, with the release of Sea Legs, a mini-album on which Lavery collaborated with electronica artist Ryan Vail, winning them a nomination for best album at the Northern Ireland Music Prize. Brian Ballard, who still lives in his birthplace of east Belfast, is a rich colourist interested in the contrasting colours and textures found in simple subjects. Painting directly on to the canvas with vigorous brushstrokes, he uses bold slashes of rich colour with fluid paint in which the bristles always leave a mark of their speed and pressure, yet they are subject to a structural order, as well as a pictorial depth. This exhibition, launching the new gallery space at the EastSide Visitor Centre, features new works that have not been exhibited before. Exhibition continues until 16 September. Exhibition continues until 16 September.
Carol Graham works across genres and her ever-evolving images appeal to a wide range of art lovers. Her subject matter varies, including landscapes, seascapes, still life, horses, and spiritual, metaphorical and abstract images. Throughout her subject matter, from the most vibrant to the darkest, there is a consistent ethereal quality of light.

Ahoy matey! Join us aboard the Strand Arts Centre and be immersed in the sounds of the sea. After the film we’ll get creative designing and assembling your own maritime musical instruments. Take inspiration from sea shanties, the crashing of the ocean waves and the rhythms of working on the high seas. Let’s make some noise in our sea shanty band!
These two documentary films narrated by Kenneth Branagh chart a series of dramatic events in Belfast a century ago, exposing a forgotten chapter in the city’s history. They reveal a story of the glittering wealth of Belfast’s city fathers as they set about building a new city hall, set against the poverty, squalor, illness and destitution of the city’s poor. Key shipyard owners were involved in the creation of the city hall, and with the Dock Strike of 1907.

The event begins with local archive footage followed by the film screening and music and stories celebrating the history of the docks and shipbuilding in Belfast.
A new play in development by Padraig Coyle and directed by Julie Kinsella, Mixed Messages follows the story of Belfast footballer Teddy Gillespie, a radio operator with the Norwegian navy during the North Atlantic Convoy runs of World War II. His friendship with Norwegian seaman Gunnar Nyborg appeared destined to last a lifetime. However, unexpected events intervene and their impact continues long after the war ends.
The Monday Club is a story of the ‘magnificent seven’ who met up in a Belfast city centre pub every Monday after work. They were ‘Island men’ working in the Belfast docks. Their friendship over the years saw them share love, loss and family connections. Part of Britain on Film: Coast and Sea in partnership with BFI National Archive, NI Screen Digital Archive and Belfast Film Festival.
