Good luck to the ‘CineFocus’ juries who will have lots of fun judging the films in competition & well done to all the young directors who have submitted films to Young Filmmaker 2014.

In March we were delighted to welcome our patron Lord Julian Fellowes to Belfast to announce plans for the Cinemagic production of Northern Ireland’s first Christmas feature film for young people ‘A Christmas Star!’ The support for the project has been overwhelming from both the film industry and the general public with thousands of young people auditioning for the film’s lead cast and production crew. Filming will begin in the Autumn and we are looking forward to premiering the film in 2015.

I would like to say a big thank you to all the hard working and committed staff at Cinemagic who have been so dedicated and enthusiastic. Thank you also to the Cinemagic Board for all their guidance and support. To all our patrons who are so kind and give so much - you are simply amazing!

Cinemagic is a festival for young people, designed by young people. As you can see this is reflected in the 2014 programme which includes a very exciting line up of events including special premieres, international film previews, education screenings, ‘Talent Lab’ masterclasses and of course films made by young people.

I look forward to seeing you all at the festival!

Thank you to our funders and sponsors who continue to support us.

To you our audience, thank you for supporting and being part of what is now the largest Children’s Film and Television Festival for Young People in the UK and Ireland.

A Message of Support

Cinemagic is a great organization providing educational and cultural opportunities for young people on an international scale and bringing them together to inspire and motivate. For the last 25 years they have delivered some incredible work and I am very proud to be associated with them.

--------------------------------------------------------------I am proud to support Cinemagic Belfast 2014 and congratulate everyone involved for the remarkable contribution Cinemagic makes to the creative industries by embracing the magic of film, television and digital technologies in a unique way to educate, motivate and inspire young people. 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of Cinemagic and I have no doubt that it will continue to promote home-grown Northern Ireland talent on the global stage for many more years to come. I wish every success to Cinemagic Belfast 2014. The Rt. Hon. Peter D. Robinson MLA First Minister ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Over the last 25 years Cinemagic has provided valuable opportunities for young people from all backgrounds to engage with the film and television industry. I thank Cinemagic for their foresight and hard work, which has resulted in over half a million children and young people having the opportunity to get involved, take on responsibility and build their confidence. I encourage people to get involved in this year’s film and television festival and I am confident Cinemagic Belfast 2014 will be an enjoyable and positive experience for everyone.

Cinemagic Patron, Liam Neeson

----------------------------------I am delighted to endorse the 2014 Belfast Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival for Young People. Each year, the Festival enlists the help of leading industry professionals to provide a skills based experience for our young people. Cinemagic offers a unique opportunity for those involved to gain an insight into our thriving creative industries and inspires new talent. I wish everyone taking part a most successful and enjoyable festival in 2014. Ádh mór ar gach duine atá ag glacadh páirte. Carál Ní Chuilín MLA Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure ------------------------------------

Martin McGuinness MLA deputy First Minister ---------------------------------------------------------------

I would like to affirm the value of Cinemagic film screenings and masterclasses to Moving Image Arts (MIA) candidates across all three levels of the subject – at GCSE, AS and A2. The Cinemagic Festival gives students a unique opportunity to view a range of films on the big screen that are directly relevant to the specifications’ content and learning outcomes of MIA including strong illustrative examples of genrespecific, realist and expressionist films. In instances where a speaker or workshop is also included in the event, it can be of even more benefit, as time is taken after the screening itself to discuss and analyse film language with the student audience. This is relevant to the online examination unit. It is a testament to the value of Cinemagic that so many teachers bring their students to screenings each year. The benefits of young people watching international films is huge! We believe engaging in a programme of world cinema can increase learning and understanding of different cultures, helping to promote an environment of tolerance and acceptance. Exposure to subtitled movies from a young age can also improve traditional literary skills as well as developing film literacy and a deep understanding of cinema that

will last long into adulthood! Here’s what the Young Consultants think…. “I really like subtitled films because I get to see films I would not usually see in my local cinema”. “I like subtitled films because they allow me to see the styles of film that other countries enjoy as well as experiencing different cultures”. “Foreign movies are good to watch because they can help with learning different languages”.

Special Effects Make-Up Special Effects is without a doubt a highly creative and fun area in make-up artistry. It allows you to create any creature you can imagine, as whacky or scary as your heart desires! It also serves a real purpose. With storylines becoming more sensational and technology more sophisticated, special effects is becoming an increasingly important element of both film and theatrical productions. Thurs 20 Nov 10.30am – 1.00pm Participating School 12 – 15 year olds £4.00 per student

After you’ve taken this class, you’ll never need to be stuck for an idea again. Forget “writer’s block”. This workshop with award-winning writerdirector Charles Harris is filled with ways to get you writing. You’ll learn the four “gears” of writing that you can use at any time. You’ll have fun with “free writing” where you simply don’t know what’s coming next. You’ll find out why “obstacles are a writer’s best friend.” We’ll play with all kinds of disasters and dilemmas. We’ll get our characters to play a “truth game” with us, and learn what really makes our writing work. After this, the problem won’t be getting yourself to start writing, it will be getting yourself to stop! Bring paper and pens.

Developing Strong & Memorable Characters

Wed 19 Nov 10.00am – 3.00pm Participating School 12 – 18 year olds £10.00 per student

Audiences love memorable characters. Likeable heroes and determined heroines, aliens with five legs and secretive next-door neighbours - it’s great characters who make films and TV programmes special. In this session, writerdirector Charles Harris is going to look at how to create strong characters in your writing. You’re going to learn how to find characters that people will love and hate. We’re going to search out where you find them. We’re going to play with different ways to improve them. We’ll find ways of dealing with difficult characters, characters that nobody likes. And you’re going to learn how to put different characters together to create groups of characters who will virtually write their own scenes, by themselves. Come with paper and pens, and prepared to have fun.

Fri 21 Nov 1.00pm – 3.00pm Belfast Met, Millfield 16 – 21 year olds £5.00 per student

Education programme - film in practice

Come meet with Nuria G. Blanco, Production Manager with Oscar Nominated animation studio, Cartoon Saloon. Learn the science behind the magic as Nuria introduces you to the different roles, projects, software and ideas currently being worked on in Cartoon Saloon. Using lots of beautiful visual tools, she will bring you on a step-by-step journey through the making-of their current TV series in production, Puffin Rock. And as if that wasn’t treasure enough, there will be a (sssh, don’t tell anyone) sneak preview of their latest feature film!

The first part of this workshop is an interactive presentation that explains and shows a variety of storyboards used in traditional and digital stop motion animation, covering television series, commercials and feature films. This will be followed by a session on how to begin visualising a script and telling the story using the camera, characters and locations.

Pitch That Brief

Genre Study: Nordic Noir With Roy Stafford Tues 25 Nov 10.00am – 1.00pm UTV 14 – 18 year olds £6.00 per student

with BBC NI and Doubleband Films This class will be facilitated by Brian Henry Martin, Director, Doubleband Films and Justin Binding, Commissioning Executive Producer, BBC Northern Ireland.

Education programme - film in practice

So you’ve got an idea for a film or television programme? What’s the next step? Brian will host a workshop in the morning showing some of the latest work produced by Doubleband Films as well as covering the dos and don’ts of filmmaking. Participants will then be given a commissioning brief and asked to pitch their ideas to Justin, who in turn will offer advice and feedback before picking the best pitch in the afternoon session!

22

Wed 26 Nov 10.00am – 3.00pm Belfast Met, Millfield 16 – 21 year olds £5.00 per student

The workshop will aim to explore the distinctiveness of crime fiction films produced in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Finland) for both TV and the cinema and attempt to understand why they have garnered so much interest in the UK, Ireland and North America. As the title implies, these are crime stories which are dark and grim in theme. Sometimes they are dark in the sense of the look of 1940s ‘Film Noir’ but at other times the contrast between the nature of the crimes and the beauty of the Scandinavian landscape is what makes them distinctive. We will also explore the influence ‘Nordic Noir’ has had on homegrown productions made in the UK/Ireland including series such as Broadchurch and The Fall. Genre Study: The War Film with Euroscript Screening: The Book Thief

War puts us into the most extreme situations, bringing out both our best and worst qualities. As well as being the ultimate “extension of politics,” warfare tests our morals, beliefs and individual psychology, subjecting them to the most intense pressure imaginable – often to the point of destruction. It follows that the War Film is a broad genre. Some seem to be historical documents, giving us believable reconstructions of events; others blast off into the realms of fantasy or black humour to make their satirical points. Some want to rally us behind the fight for a “just cause;” others see warfare of every kind as total stupidity.

You’ll learn the five things that you must tell a producer if you’re to get beyond the office door. We’ll look at the best way to approach film and TV companies. We’ll talk about where to find them and what to say to them when you get to meet. We’ll also discuss the important art of “pitching”. Bring notebooks and pens.

Annually International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8. On this day thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievement. However women are still not present in equal numbers in business or politics. Globally, women’s education, health and violence against women is worse than that of men. This year’s theme “Equality for women is progress for all” stresses the vital role of women as agents of change and one of the most effective ways to do this is to put women at the heart of the political process.

Cinemagic has partnered with the Northern Ireland Assembly and Belfast City Council’s Women’s Steering Group to ask young females to create short films that will inspire a new generation of young women to step up and become leaders in the most influential arena in the world – the political arena! Over the course of five days, 16-25 year old females will create short films to highlight the benefits of young women in politics! To apply please download an application form at www. cinemagic.org.uk or email sean@cinemagic.org.uk by 12th January 2015. You must be available from 16th-20th February 2015 for the film production phase.

The workshop will Thurs 20 Nov aim to explore the 10.00am – 2.00pm distinctiveness of Queen’s Film Theatre crime fiction films 16 – 21 year olds produced in the Nordic countries for both TV and the cinema and attempt to understand why they have garnered so much interest in the UK, Ireland and North America. We will also explore the influence ‘Nordic Noir’ has had on homegrown productions made in the UK/Ireland including series such as Broadchurch and The Fall. The Workshop will be followed by a screening of Episode 1 of Series 1 of The Bridge (Bron/Broen) with thanks to Arrow Films. Beginners level – no prior knowledge required.

That’s Classified! Who really banned A Fri 21 Nov Clockwork Orange? Why 10.00am – 3.00pm did audiences live in fear of Queen’s Film Theatre Snow White? Was The Dark 12 – 18 year olds Knight too dark for ‘12A’?! These questions and many others relating to the work of the British Board of Film Classification will be answered at a special presentation and interactive workshop event for Media and Film Studies students. Screening Case Study: Captain Phillips (Cert: 12A)

If your school would like to book free places at any of these events please email Laura@cinemagic.org.uk
