Music City welcomes you to Jazz 2014 It’s hard to believe that it’s 13 years
since the first notes of the City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival sounded back in 2001. Now the five day music extravaganza is a permanent fixture in the social calendar, attracting over 35,000 visitors annually for the biggest celebration of music in Northern Ireland. 2014 is a significant year for all things musical in the North West, as Derry’s Music City programme continues to nurture, inspire and champion local talent, following on from our hugely successful year as City of Culture in 2013. This year’s Speakeasy theme tips a nod to the past when music was enjoyed behind closed doors, with covert late night underground events, glamorous costumes and exciting new sounds. Nowadays we prefer to put our performers on a pedestal, showcasing some of the finest musical talents in the business, from Carmen Ghia and the Hotrods to Ricky Cool and the In Crowd.
Don’t miss the chance to experience Derry hospitality at its very best, with the finest live acts from far and wide taking to the stage in over 60 venues, as pubs, clubs, cafés, hotels and even 3
schools, throw open their doors for a truly LegenDerry welcome. As always event sponsors Diageo allow us to bring you even more top quality free entertainment at a whole host of venues throughout the city; jump on the free Guinness Jazz Trail and enjoy a weekend jam-packed with sheer unadulterated entertainment.
NEW IN 2014 This year as always the festival will
shine the spotlight on some of the brightest new names on the music scene. The programme for 2014 features a diverse range of talent, including some of the most formidable figures in jazz, blues, folk, rock – and even traditional music. Adding another music genre to the programme this year, folk fans will be thrilled to catch Kate Rusby at the Millennium Forum, whose stunning voice has earned her the title of the “Barnsley Nightingale”. The star of all the best national folk festivals, Kate’s outstanding talent has been acknowledged with a much coveted Mercury Music Prize nomination.
Sharing the Forum bill this year will be the talented Stephen James, who brings his unique one man show to the city to tell the story of popular 60’s singing legend Frankie Valli. This “Jersey Boys” style performance will have you dancing in the aisles, as James brings the music of the 60’s to life. 4
NEW IN 2014
Adding some pizzazz to the
proceedings is the inimitable Ricky Cool and the In Crowd, who will be taking to the stage at various venues over the weekend.
Ricky has had a colourful career working with big names such as Robert Plant before joining The Big Town Playboys, which began his long-term partnership with Andy Silvester of Savoy Brown and Chicken Shack. One of the hottest front men in the business, Ricky now leads the band who have toured with such greats as the legendary Jerry Lee Lewis.
For traditional music fans the festival introduces two of the most progressive bands on the contemporary trad scene. Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin hosts a night of jazz-infused folk and traditional music 5
featuring critically-acclaimed bands
Kan & Buille, brought together in an
exclusive line-up for this year’s City of Derry Jazz Festival.
A real highlight of this year’s festival is the return of the Glenn Miller Orchestra who will bring their unique sound to the impressive Corinthian Ballroom at the City Hotel, Saturday 3rd May. Or for something totally different, slip on your best dress and enjoy the sultry sounds of a bygone era under the cover of darkness, as the Playhouse Speakeasy Bar opens its doors to a top secret session each night. Enjoy live music in a sumptuous setting and all the atmosphere of a real prohibition era venue - just make sure you remember the secret password!
NEW IN 2014

Festival Favourites Each year the festival welcomes back
some familiar faces who over the years have helped to make the City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival the biggest and best event of its kind in the country. Music fans flock to catch their regular festival favourites, with bands returning year on year for the warm welcome, great craic and first rate hospitality. And this year is no different, with a programme brimming with talent from all over the globe.
Jazz aficionados will be queuing up once again to hear the soulful sounds of Dana Masters and her band who make a welcome return this year, adding a touch of class to the festival with their sultry renditions of old classics. If you prefer your entertainment served up with more oomph, then fans of retro rockabilly will be delighted to see the return of Carmen Ghia and the Hotrods, whose high octane performances have venues packed to the rafters every year. 7
Other acts revisiting the Derry jazz
scene this year are the fantastic Oo Bop Sh’Bam, who will be tiring out the crowds with their lively set. They will be joined by royal revellers the Kings of Rhythm who never fail to get the crowds going, and Ska legends Ska Beats.
They share the billing with the cream of the local jazz scene led by Derry’s own father of jazz Gay McIntyre, who has been entertaining music lovers in the North West for over 60 years. Two of the most talented musicians to hail from Ireland, Paul McIntyre and David Lyttle will also be adding to the local talent quota. Add to the programme the Blues Katz, TV favourites the Jive Aces and the Jiveoholics and you have a festival lineup to remember – all you have to do is pick your favourites!

Music Hothouse is back... As part of City of Derry Jazz & Big Band festival we are incredibly excited to announce the return of the Music Hothouse this Easter at the Nerve Centre. The Music Hothouse ethos revolves around fostering new musical talent by giving access to mentoring, tutoring and workshops from industry professionals to highlight the best practices available today. Music Hothouse is intense to the max, comprising five days dedicated to the pursuit of musical excellence. We are inviting 30 young musicians (aged 1118 years) to avail of this fantastic opportunity to develop musicianship, form bands, jam, create and perform with like-minded young individuals. Derry as Music City 2014 is offering up many events for young people and as part of the Jazz Festival trail, they will perform at the one and only Craft Village Courtyard, so you can strut your stuff on the same stage as the best musical talent from Ireland and further afield. If all this wasn’t enough the awesomely talented Neil Cowley will conduct a one off live performance workshop the evening before the event to highlight the intricacies of stage craft, building confidence and how to handle audience interaction with ease. Music Hothouse shall be happening at the Nerve Centre on the week of 20 24 April 2014 with the final showcase performance on 3rd May in the Craft Village Courtyard. Neil’s workshop will be on the evening of 3rd May from 6pm - 9pm. If you are up for the most rewarding and challenging musical experience you will ever have then we look forward to seeing you here at the Nerve Centre in the near future. For further info and to register your interest contact m.coyle@nervecentre.org.
