Welcome
to the 24th Foyle Film Festival Education Programme which features a diverse array of screenings, workshops, and special presentations. This year we are pleased to announce Omniplex Cinemas as sponsors of what is an extended Foyle Film Festival Education Programme.
“Omniplex Cinemas are delighted to extend our participation with the 24th Foyle Film Festival. This year in addition to screening six features as part of the main festival we will sponsor the festival education programme. Over the last years we have seen the importance of the festival to the community and we are privileged to be involved yet again.” Mark Anderson, Operations Director of Omniplex Cinemas As the world marks the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, the theme of this year’s festival is ‘On Film: Events That Shook The World’. As well as exploring the impact of 9/11, the post primary education programme broadens its focus to investigate other significant events such as the Sinking Of The Titanic, the Holocaust, and the Civil Rights Movement. In addition to the special themed events, the education programme includes the usual fascinating mix of curriculum focused screenings and workshops aimed at primary, post-primary

schools, colleges, and universities. The festival’s outreach film packages take the programme right into the classroom, giving schools the flexibility to tailor screenings to suit their own timetable and with no need to book buses or additional cover for teachers. The Foyle Film Festival continues to nurture the next generation of young filmmakers with ongoing support for the CCEA Moving Image Arts (MIA) students – whose work is a highlight of the education programme. We are delighted that Michael Bond continues to sponsor this very important event through the Derry Crystal MIA Awards, which are presented for the winning student films. “Derry Crystal have supported the Foyle Film Festival now for a number of years and find the quality of entries from the schools has improved dramatically over the years. We are pleased to be able to support this and to foster the skills and imagination of the pupils, the filmmakers of the future.” Michael Bond, City of Derry Crystal We hope you enjoy the programme, and look forward to welcoming your school to this year’s Festival.

This is the story of Abib – a rather naughty, but at the same time loveable, donkey that carried Baby Jesus’ Mother Mary all the way to Bethlehem. When King Herod ordered everyone to return to the place of their birth, all the camels and horses were very quickly taken leaving a rather motley array of animals – including Abib. Abib did his utmost to avoid selection as he was also rather lazy but when Joseph arrived he was the only animal left. Abib soon realised that this was no ordinary journey and, helped by his friends, Jaffar the Camel and Orion the Horse, he bravely fought off King Herod’s soldiers and, like the three wise men, followed the star to Bethlehem where Mary gave birth to the little Baby Jesus. conditions, exploitations and the effects of war, children can be encouraged to think about what makes them happy. The Ragdoll Foundation is dedicated to developing the power of imaginative responses in children through the arts. The philosophy of the Ragdoll Foundation can be summed up by the quotation below from Sylvia AshtonWarner in her book ‘Teacher’: "I see the mind of a five year old as a volcano with two vents; destructiveness and creativeness. And I can see that to the extent that we widen the creative channel, we atrophy the destructive one". Sylvia Ashton-Warner This package represents four short films from series 2 of What Makes Me Happy?, and is filmed in South Sudan, The Netherlands, Colombia, and Vietnam, and gives four different children, of the same age, from challenging communities around the world an equal opportunity to tell their stories. Using
drama to tell a story, evoking the spirit of what makes them happy; the films capture the children’s positive spirit, giving them a voice across the miles. The underlying objective of each film was to portray children in a positive light and show their will and determination to overcome the struggles they experience every day. They introduce both children and adults to the circumstances of children living in the developing world and deprived communities closer to home. This important project gives children a voice and parity, while giving the rest of us a different perspective. The What Makes Me Happy? project has potential to be a powerful tool to raise awareness and build public support around issues of global development and perceptions of the developing world. In a small, remote mountain top primary school in the Kenyan bush, hundreds of children are jostling for a chance for the free education newly promised by the Kenyan government. One new applicant causes astonishment when he knocks on the door of the school. He is Maruge, an old Mau Mau veteran in his eighties, who is desperate to learn to read at this late stage of his life. He fought for the liberation of his country and now feels he must have the chance of an education so long denied - even if it means sitting in a classroom alongside six-year-olds. Moved by his passionate plea, head teacher Jane Obinchu supports his struggle to gain admission and together they face fierce opposition from parents and officials who don’t want to waste a precious school place on such an old man. Through Maruge’s journey, we are taken back to the untold story of British colonial rule 50 years earlier where Maruge fought for the freedom of his country, eventually ending up in the extreme and harsh conditions of the British detention camps. It is a triumphant testimony to the transforming force of education. It also successfully tackles the age-old taboos of ageism, racism, and sexism. “The uplifting true story of world’s oldest primary school student, The First Grader reels you in with its human-interest hook, but packs an even more vital agenda: enlisting Kenyan locals to share little-known details of their nation’s independence. (D)irector Justin Chadwick’s admirable effort manages to do more than inspire, educating audiences with an important chapter in African history...” Peter Debruge, Variety UK/USA/Kenya.2010. For over 25 years, Afghanistan has been at war. In March 2001, the ruling Taliban destroyed the tallest stone statues in the world, the 'Buddhas of Bamiyan'. One of the refugees who now lives among the ruins is an eight-year-old boy called Mir. This astonishingly intimate film explores the lives of Mir and his family. Through summer, winter and spring we follow Mir's adventures as he gets into the kind of fun and mischief of any 8-year-old boy, against the magnificent backdrop of Bamiyan and its ruined statues. As Mir grows, the adults around him reveal what life has been like over the past two decades, a period in which hundreds of thousands of children like Mir have been killed. Phil Grabsky's film is a unique portrait of everyday life in modern Afghanistan. “An optimistic documentary following a refugee family who live in a cave beside the ruins of the giant Buddha statues blown up by the Taliban.” James Benefield, Eye for Film “…Grabsky captivates audiences with an innocent boys struggle to make the most of his fleeting childhood.” Denise Tan, The Lowell.org Australia.2004. Director: Phil Grabsky. Duration: 1hr.36mins. Cert: PG
