ON FILM. EVENTS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD.
As the world marks the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, the theme of the 24th Foyle Film Festival is On Film: Events That Shook The World. As well as exploring the impact of September 11, the festival broadens its focus to highlight other significant events that have had an impact on the local and global political stage. Events such as the Holocaust, the Civil Rights Movement (both domestic and international), Bloody Sunday, the Omagh bombing, the Assassination of John F. Kennedy, and the Rwandan crisis, all come under the festival spotlight this year. In addition to the special themed events, the programme includes the usual eclectic mix of contemporary, foreign language film, documentaries, competition short films and animations, as well as workshops and industry events. This year’s programme also features a kids film club offering screenings and workshops for all the family over the weekend of the festival. The festival opens with the NI Premiere of THE ARTIST, a contemporary movie paying homage to the Golden Age of silent film, and to Tinseltown in the 1920s. Shot in black and white, THE ARTIST does what the medium of film does best by giving the audience a magical step back in time to a romantic bygone era. Lead actor Jean Dujardin received the Best Actor Award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for his outstanding performance, and has also been tipped as a contender for the Oscars in 2012. While our closing night film is the Irish premiere of SHAME, Steve McQueen’s latest film collaboration with actor Michael Fassbender, and one of the most hotly anticipated releases of the year. Fassbender delivers a powerful performance as a young man struggling with sexual addiction.
PAGE 6 FOYLE FILM FESTIVAL 2011

We are delighted this year to welcome the Omniplex Group as sponsors of the festival’s education programme, and also our Opening Night Film, THE ARTIST. “Omniplex Cinemas are delighted to extend our participation with the 24th Foyle Film Festival. This year in addition to screening 7 features as part of the main festival we will sponsor the festival education programme. Over the last years we have seen the importance of the festival to the community and we are privileged to be involved yet again.” Mark Anderson, Operations Director of Omniplex Cinemas

Hollywood 1927. George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a silent movie superstar with the world at his feet. For young extra Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo), it seems the sky's the limit - major movie stardom awaits. THE ARTIST tells the story of their interlinked destinies. Echoes of Fredric March in the original A STAR IS BORN, and also the real life story of silent movie icon John Gilbert – whose career was destroyed by the advent of talkies. VIDAL SASSOON: THE MOVIE BLU-RAY SCREENING | DOCUMENTARY FILM
How one man changed the world with a pair of scissors. Vidal Sassoon is more than just a hairdresser - he's a rock star, an artist, and a craftsman who 'changed the world with a pair of scissors'. With the geometric, Bauhaus-inspired hairstyles he pioneered in the 1960s and his 'wash and wear' philosophy, Sassoon revolutionised the art of hairstyling, leaving an indelible mark on popular culture. Sassoon literally changed the way that women look and cut their hair today. Spanning 80 years of revolution in culture, VIDAL SASSOON: THE MOVIE takes a deeply intimate look into the life of this extraordinary man, whose influence far outreaches the industry he changed forever.
“This year’s must-see fashion documentary.” Sunday Times “This is one hair appointment you won’t want to miss.” Empire “An enticing snapshot of fashion in the swinging sixties, not to mention a fascinating portrait of an intriguing figure.” Grazia “…(Not) just the story of a brilliant fashion idea that swept the globe. It is a euphoric account of one man’s strenuous self-invention.” The New York Times “Sassoon is a truly inspirational man who has a brilliant message to tell.” Cosmopolitan USA.2010. TABLOID DOCUMENTARY FILM
Academy Award-winner Errol Morris’ TABLOID follows the much strangerthan-fiction true-life adventures of Joyce McKinney, a former “beauty queen” whose single-minded devotion to the man of her dreams leads her across the globe and directly onto the front pages of the British tabloid newspapers. Joyce’s crusade for love and personal vindication, as illustrated by Morris, takes her through a surreal world of gunpoint abduction, manacled Mormons, oddball accomplices, bondage modeling, magic underwear and dreams of celestial unions. This notorious affair is barking mad. Equal parts love story, film noir, brainy B-movie and demented fairy tale, TABLOID is a delirious meditation on hysteria – both public and personal – from a filmmaker who continues to break down and blow open the documentary genre with his penetrating portraits of eccentric and profoundly complex characters.
“...a fascinating look at Britain's pre-web popular press, a world before the celebrity industry, before hackable mobile phones, in which big-spending, cheerfully irresponsible newspapers made stars of unsuspecting members of the public… An extraordinary tale told with shrewd wit.”
A fascinating documentary that revisits the extraordinary political life and achievements of Bernadette Devlin-McAliskey. The documentary was nine years in the making, and takes the audience back to the late sixties in Northern Ireland. This is the time when The Troubles had just ignited, and the Civil Rights Movement (taking inspiration from the mass protests in the USA) were campaigning against the discrimination being suffered by Catholics in Northern Ireland. Bernadette Devlin was then a young university student who had the courage of her convictions to add her support to the movement. She quickly became a central player in the movement, and a poster girl for the struggle. Nicknamed “The Irish Joan of Arc” and “Castro In A Miniskirt”, at 21 she became the youngest woman ever elected to Parliament. This is a fascinating insight into the political career of a remarkable woman.
Winner of the Best Documentary at the Galway Film Festival. Short-listed for the prestigious Grierson Award at London Film Festival. “Offering essential history lessons for audiences who dimly recall the name Bernadette Devlin McAliskey, but not necessarily her impressive achievements, Lelia Doolan's film entertains as well as educates, thanks to her highly engaging subject and rich treasure trove of archival clips.” Charles Gant, Variety Ireland.2011. THE PRINCESS OF MONTPENSIER (LA PRINCESSE DE MONTPENSIER) BLU-RAY SCREENING FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
In the midst of France’s religious wars of the 16th century, the beautiful young aristocrat Marie de Méziéres has attracted the attention of three men. She is in love with Guise, her tempestuous cousin, but is forced into a marriage of convenience with Prince Montpensier. Then, when her husband is away at war, her tutor Chabannes’ fatherly concern quickly turns into romantic passion. The film explores the notion of a young woman struggling for independence in a society that reduces her to an object to be sold to the highest bidder.

A compelling documentary based on security camera footage from the Guantánamo Bay prison. This encounter between a team of Canadian intelligence agents and a 16-yearold child detainee in Guantánamo has never before been seen. Based on seven hours of video footage recently declassified by the Canadian courts, this documentary delves into the unfolding high stakes game of cat and mouse between captor and captive over a four-day period. Maintaining the surveillance camera style this film analyses the political, legal and scientific aspects of a forced dialogue. gling to make sense of their lives.
Based on a popular French novel, this bittersweet film has the feel of a modern-day fairy-tale. Despite living in a luxury Parisian apartment, young Paloma does not relish the thought of turning out like her unhappy and neurotic parents, and so decides to kill herself on her 12th birthday. As the fateful day approaches, Paloma gravitates towards the concierge in her building - dowdy 54-year-old Renée. Like Paloma, Renée has a rich inner life which she keeps hidden from the outside world. Only the rich and cultured Mr Kakuro Ozu, who has just moved in, recognises the inner qualities in both women, and the three outcasts begin to forge a unique and touching friendship.

DOCUMENTARY FILM
Jimmy McGovern’s Emmy nominated SUNDAY follows the events of January 30th 1972 when British Paratroopers shot dead 14 unarmed civilians, and wounded a further 15 during a civil rights march in Derry. The programme was made with the full consultation and co-operation of the families affected by the tragedy, and was carefully researched over several years by am experienced factual production team. More than a hundred first hand interviews were conducted with British soldiers and officers, priests, politicians, medical experts and eyewitnesses as well as relatives.
Winner of numerous prizes, including an IFTA, a Royal Television Society Award, and an Emmy Award nomination. "I was deeply affected by it. It was a remarkable experience ... the film brought to life the events of that day in a remarkable way.” Bishop Edward Daly "I found it absolutely lacerating, it was tragic, it was powerful, it was analytic, everything came together ... it was deeply humane, deeply, deeply, humane."
On the morning of September 11, 2001, brothers Jules and Gedeon Naudet were working on a documentary about a rookie New York City firefighter. Hearing a roar in the sky, Jules turned his camera upward – just in time to film the only existing image of the first plane crashing into the World Trade Center. In a fateful instant, the brothers became eyewitnesses to the most shocking and defining moment of our time. With cameras rolling, the Naudents followed NYC firefighters into the heart of what would be known as Ground Zero. What emerged is an unforgettably powerful visual document and a stirring tribute to real-life heroes who, in their city’s darkest hour, rose to extraordinary acts of courage and compassion. James Hanlon and the Naudets filmed throughout September 11 and the days afterward from the firemen’s perspective. The directors of this incredible documentary caught the only known video of the first plane to hit the Twin Towers, and also the exclusive footage inside the towers during and after the attacks.

Nine years later, we look at recent developments in the lives of the participants of that film and also address the current international class action in New York courts against multinationals who aided apartheid. UNSEEN WOMEN: STORIES FROM ARMAGH GAOL Back inside Armagh Gaol, the Victorian prison for women during the Troubles, staff and prisoners tell their stories for the first time. Artist Jolene Mairs has edited material from the Prisons Memory Archive to bring some of these stories to the public. In 2006, the Prisons Memory Archive filmed former prisoners, prison staff, teachers, chaplains and solicitors as they walked and talked their way around the derelict prison site. Armagh served as the only female prison in Northern Ireland until its closure in 1986 when all prisoners were transferred to Maghaberry Prison. At the height of the conflict, the number of female political prisoners grew from 2 in 1971 to more than 100 by 1976. Despite their significance, the story of this period has remained relatively unheard and unseen. This exhibition showcases the stories of seven women: one prison officer, one loyalist prisoner, two teachers and three republican prisoners. A 30min documentary containing six 5-minute extracts from each woman’s story will run alongside their unedited recordings. The screening (re)presents multiple narratives of our contested past and encourages us to find differences and similarities between competing versions of that past. INTERNATIONAL SURVIVORS OF SUICIDE DAY International Survivors of Suicide Day was officially founded by U.S. Senate resolution in 1999 through the efforts of Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, who lost his father to suicide. The target audience is adults, but it is appropriate for most middle and high-school aged children to watch with a guardian. The DVD of International Survivors of Suicide Day has been produced, created and sponsored for the last 13 years by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The film will be followed by a Q & A session where the audience will get the opportunity to question a panel, made up of a family member affected by suicide, and representatives from the Western Trust, the Bogside & Brandywell Health Forum and local Public Health Agency (PHA), who will give a professional and/or personal perspective on this major public health issue that affects all our communities. THE CARROWMENAGH EVICTIONS
FRIDAY 25 NOVEMBER ✺ 10.30am THE REGIONAL CULTURAL CENTRE LETTERKENNY and the NERVE CENTRE present a Foyle Film Festival Outreach Event for the Sharing Stories Project
SHARING STORIES IN A NEW MEDIA AGE This one-day event will look at the importance of telling your story and articulating your message in the digital world. With a morning session of discussion and case studies around role and impact of local and community based filmmaking with Dr Cahal McLaughlin (University of Ulster) and Risteard O'Domhnaill (Director THE PIPE), the event will foster an examination of how and why diverse groups and individuals can benefit from getting their message out there and improving wider understanding of what they are about. This will lead into an afternoon session in which the challenges and opportunities presented by social media to local and community filmmakers will be outlined and put to the test in a unique practical demonstration.
Special Introduction by local historian and author John A. Mc Laughlin. John A. Mc Laughlin, historian and author of CARROWMENAGH: HISTORY OF A DONEGAL VILLAGE & TOWNLAND wrote this script first for a stage play and film. John ompleted a BA in History & Politics after retiring and was awarded Donegal Person of the Year in 2004. This 40 minute film was made to commemorate the 130th anniversary of the sad and tragic events that took place in the Carrowmenagh village on the 27th, 28th, and 29th of December 1881, when an absentee landlord, Hector Frederic McNeill of Edinburgh Scotland, evicted thirteen tenant families from their farms for non payment of the Rack Rent. Nine of the cast members of the film are descendants of the tenant’s farmers who were evicted 130 years ago.
SHARE MY STORY! will present two locally based social media practitioners with a shared challenge. Each practitioner will be given a locally rooted film produced under the Sharing Stories project and will have four weeks to use free social media to promote, publicise and disseminate the film. Instead of telling the audience what to do, they will be showing us step by step what they have done, how they have done it, and how you can do it too. Whether a specialist interest, a community organisation, an artist, a public body or small business struggling to find a voice and to get that voice heard in an increasingly crowded and ever-changing digital space, SHARING STORIES IN A NEW MEDIA AGE will offer an insight into how new technologies and traditional good storytelling can be used to make an impact and allow you to author and deliver your own story.

SHORT FILM SCRIPT WRITING WORKSHOP Writer/Director CAROL MURPHY will use a selection of short films as case studies for this short film script-writing workshop. The aims of this 4 hour workshop are to learn through collective group work and screenings; how to write a short film in terms of crafting story, developing a central character, and addressing motivation, conflict and structure; to learn about the premise, writing synopsis, treatments, step outlines, log and tag lines; to learn how to format a screenplay with the same tools as can be applied to feature film writing. Finally, in this workshop, Carol will explore some of the alternatives to a classical approach to writing for the short screen.
SHORT FILM MARKETING WORKSHOP Using some of the shorts that she produced and/or directed as case studies, including TELL IT TO THE FISHES with Dylan Moran and Gerard McSorley (produced by Murphy), Carol Murphy will look at the five stages of filmmaking from Development, Pre Production, Production, Post Production and Distribution in terms of marketing yourself and your projects. Carol will address the issue of what is best practice in marketing throughout these stages by discussing and interrogating the successes and failures of her ownpractice. In this 2-hour workshop, Murphy will also look at the niche and ever changing nature of the industry and how the filmmaker needs to prepare to be able to adapt their skills to each situation in terms of their marketing. Subject matter covered will include: visibility, presentation, researching, marketing on a low budget, teamwork, pitching, making applications, funding, finding an audience, innovation and entrepreneurial thinking.

FRAGGLEFEST 2011 It's not often that a bunch of 20-odd year-old photos inspire a gig, but that's what’s happened here. Jim Cunningham's Facebook page has become something of a local phenomenon over the last year. His photos of our distant and often best forgotten nights out in the Union Hall, Stardust, Venue and Gweedore bar, have had a whole generation reminiscing. So by way of celebration of that time and raising money for Foyle Search and Rescue... whether you were a Fraggle or not... the Nerve Centre, in association with the 24th Foyle Film Fesitval, will be showing Jim's photos, including some he hasn't gotten round to posting. But the evening wouldn't really be complete without some music from the time.
So far, the THE TURTLE ASSASSINS and CUCKOO have agreed to get back together for the night and there are more bands TBC. Add to this over 60 hours of footage uncovered from that time, including Stardust and Union Hall shows and more. Alongside this we'll have music from the time... everything from The Wonderstuff to My Bloody Valentine, from Ride to The Lemonheads, The Wedding Present to The Stone Roses and maybe even Betty Boo.
THE CORONAS
Meteor Award-winning Irish rock band The Coronas began 2011 opening for The Script across Europe, immediately followed by their first 17 date headline tour across America. The band then returned to Northern Ireland in April for three sell out shows. The Coronas are Meteor award winners (2010 Best Irish album) and significant Irish participants of OXEGEN. They released the smart 2007 debut album, HEROES OR GHOSTS and have slowly but surely been embraced by their ever growing contingent of fans as one of the best Irish bands to have emerged in the past five years. The band is due to record their next album in late 2011 in L.A.

MONDAY 21 NOVEMBER ✺ 6pm THE NERVE CENTRE CINEMA 1 British Board of Film Classification presentation followed by a screening of the film
AS IF I AM NOT THERE For a cinema-goer, the British Board of Film Classification exercises a strong influence over what you can and can't see on screen or DVD. With its decisions sometimes a source of controversy, we're delighted to welcome John Wagland to The 24th Foyle Film Festival. An Examiner at the BBFC, he will be giving a presentation about his work there, looking at the history of the organisation, its legal remit, its commitment to the British public and decision making processes, illustrated using clips from current film and television. This will be followed by a screening of Juanita Wilson's AS IF I AM NOT THERE, with a chance to discuss the film and decide if the rating awarded by the BBFC was the right one. A rare opportunity to question one of those who decide what we watch, this will be a real must see event. Please Note: This event is open to all, however, please note that due to the nature of the material that will be screened, this event is for 18 year olds & over. Tea, coffee and sandwiches served on arrival at this special Foyle Film Festival event. Set during the Balkan war of the 1990s, AS IF I AM NOT THERE is based on true events and tells the story of Samira, a young woman from Sarajevo whose life is shattered the day a soldier walks into her apartment and tells her to pack her things. Rounded up with the other women from the village and imprisoned in a warehouse in a remote region of Bosnia, she quickly learns the rules of camp life. However, the day she is chosen to “entertain” the soldiers, the real nightmare begins. In a final act of courage, Samira decides to make one last stand: to dare to be herself, and this simple act saves her life. Based on Croatian writer Slavenka Drakulic's real life experiences overseeing the proceedings of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia at The Hague.
Won IFTAs for Best Director & Best Film this year. “Ms. Petrovic's performance, Ms. Wilson's direction and Tim Fleming's cinematography are enormous, stunning achievements.” Sarah Manvel, Critics Notebook
“Few films this year - if not this decade - will challenge you like AS IF I AM NOT THERE, the debut film from Juanita Wilson… the film is an artistic triumph that works both as a historical document and brilliant piece of film making.” Kelly Stewart, Toronto Film Scene Ireland.2010. Director: Juanita Wilson. Cast: Stellan Skarsgård, Mirai Grbic, Natasa Petrovic, Fedja Stukan, Nikolina Kujaca. Duration: 1hr.49mins. Cert:18

WHAT ARE THE GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME? A presentation by IAN CHRISTIE Currently Professor of Film and Media History at Birkbeck College, University of London, Ian Christie is a film historian and broadcaster who has written and edited books on Martin Scorsese, Powell and Pressburger, Terry Gilliam and Sergei Eisenstein. Ian, whose family is originally from Derry, recently co-authored a major research study for the UK Film Council on the cultural impact of cinema, titled STORIES WE TELL OURSELVES.
The 24th Foyle Film Festival continues its support for the annual showcase of the best short films from Moving Image Arts students. The Foyle Film Festival introduced this unique award a number of years ago with the support and sponsorship of Michael Bond from Derry Crystal, and this annual event has just gone from strength to strength. The festival is delighted to once again celebrate and highlight the talent, imagination, and creativity of the MIA students by awarding the beautiful Derry City Crystal Awards for the best films. It is with a great deal of pride and pleasure that the Foyle Film Festival provides a platform for the work of these budding young filmmakers. The festival hopes to be accepting the work of MIA students into the Light In Motion (LIM) Competition – which is Oscar affiliated – in the not too distant future.
In this presentation, Ian will look at some of the major films in cinema history, including CITIZEN KANE, THE RED SHOES and the BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN. As Sight and Sound magazine prepares to publish its list of the ten best films of all time in a few months, this is an opportune time to consider what is it that makes a film great and what are the landmark films in the history of the cinema?
