Testament Of Youth Electricity Finding Vivian Maier The Priest’s Children A City Dreaming Inez: A Challenging Woman
www.foylefilmfestival.org FOR BOOKINGS VISIT WWW.FOYLEFILMFESTIVAL.ORG // 1
Welcome The theme of this year’s Foyle Film Festival is ‘Secret Lives’. The programme explores this theme through a series of screenings and discussions – delving into the real lives of individuals whose everyday behaviour provided no clues to a completely secret existence. Finding Vivian Maier is the fascinating story of a woman who worked as a nanny for over 40 years, while secretly making films, and taking thousands of photographs documenting her life and those around her. Her secret life was discovered at an auction after her death. Her work has been universally celebrated and has led to a renaissance in the popularity of street photography. The festival launches on November 19 with the Irish premiere of Testament Of Youth – the incredible true story of one young woman’s struggle to survive the horrors of war. Director James Kent (Margaret, The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister) will provide a special introduction to the screening. Night Will Fall blatantly exposes the denial by ordinary Germans that they had any knowledge of the concentration camps. The purpose of the original film was to ensure that the Holocaust could not be denied. Much of the archive film in Night Will Fall is being shown for the first time. Sally Angel, producer of Night Will Fall, will introduce this screening and take part in a post-screening discussion. This year Foyle Film Festival celebrates the 15th anniversary of becoming an Oscar® affiliated festival through the Light In Motion (LIM) Competition. To mark this important milestone, the festival is hosting a special industry conference ‘From Shorts To Features’ (Friday 21 and Saturday 22), which is designed to give filmmakers the knowledge and skills required to make the transition from short film production to making their first feature film. As part of ‘From Shorts To Features’, director Andrea Arnold will discuss how she made the journey from an Oscar-winning short filmmaker (Wasp) to making critically acclaimed features (Red Road and Wuthering Heights). Lewis Carroll’s story of Alice in Wonderland is an example of literature that has been dissected, explored and debated for decades. Some hardcore theorists compare the story to the experience of a metaphorical journey that one might experience on acid. Well, as for Lily O’Connor (Agyness Deyn), she compares one of her epileptic seizures to the fictional lost girl: “Here’s the breath, here’s the breeze, here’s the shiver – I’m Alice falling down the rabbit hole.” Bryn Higgins’s Electricity is the powerful story of Lily’s journey to London to track down her wayward brother to give him his share of their mother’s inheritance. A task that doesn’t sound too challenging but with her brother Mikey (Christian Cooke) living a seemingly off-the-grid existence in the capital and Lily’s
epilepsy always on standby, it becomes a needle-in-a-haystack mission for her to manage. Deyn puts in a truly astonishing performance as Lily, who refuses to be defined by her illness. She’s a tough but compassionate character which Deyn brings alive with ease. Her blossoming connection with Good Samaritan Mel (Lenora Crichlow) at first feels like an unlikely match, but eventually turns into an authentic friendship. Anyone who’s ever lived in a city can relate to the feeling of being alone in the crowd, and Higgins references this without appearing hammy. The film combines strong, witty human drama with remarkable visual effects to create an immersive and compelling cinematic experience.
“With an engaging story spearheaded by its magnetising leading lady, Electricity is a beautifully sculpted film with an honest message… An unusual, beautiful, stunning, exciting thrill ride… The direction by Bryn Higgins is awe inspiring. His blending of the dramatic, heart rending elements of Lily’s search for her brother, with the fantastical, sometimes horrifying and spiritual elements of her inner journey and the struggle to deal with epilepsy is beautiful, and show him to be a master of his craft.” BFI London Film Festival 2014 Review The Foyle Film Festival Light In Motion (LIM) Awards, sponsored by City of Derry Crystal, will be announced and presented before the closing night screening of Electricity.
The script has been adapted by BAFTA winner Joe Fisher from the novel by Ray Robinson.

FINDING VIVIAN MAIER THURSDAY 20 NOVEMBER @ 6PM VENUE: BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL USA. 2013. Director(s): John Maloof and Charlie Siskel. Cast: Vivian Maier, John Maloof, Phil Donahue, Tim Roth, Mary Ellen Mark. Duration: 1hr.24mins. Cert: 12A. Language: English & French. Distributor: Soda Pictures Finding Vivian Maier is the critically acclaimed documentary about a mysterious nanny, who secretly took over 100,000 photographs that were hidden in storage lockers, discovered decades later, and is now among the 20th century’s greatest photographers. Directed by John Maloof and Charlie Siskel, Maier’s strange and riveting life and art are revealed through never before seen photographs, films and interviews with dozens who thought they knew her. Maier’s massive body of work came to light in 2007 when it was discovered at a local thrift auction house on Chicago’s Northwest Side. From there, it would eventually impact the world over and change the life of the man who championed her work and brought it to the public eye, John Maloof. Currently, Vivian Maier’s body of work is being archived and cataloged for the enjoyment of others and for future generations. John Maloof is at the core of this project after reconstructing most of the archive, having been previously dispersed to the various buyers attending that auction. Now, with roughly 90% of her archive reconstructed, Vivian’s work is part of a renaissance in interest in the art of street photography. “Amazing… This should be seen with other people, in the dark, on a big screen!” Michael Moore

WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS NORTHERN IRELAND PREMIERE THURSDAY 20 NOVEMBER @ 8PM VENUE: BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL New Zealand. 2014. Director(s): Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. Cast: Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi, Jonathan Brugh, Cori Gonzalex-Macuer, Stuart Rutherford, Ben Fransham. Duration: 1hr.26mins. Cert: 15. Distributor: Metrodome A film with real bite! The first directorial full feature collaboration between Oscar®-nominated director/writer/actor Taika Waititi (Two Cars, One Night) and actor/writer/ composer Jermaine Clement (Flight Of The Conchords). What We Do in the Shadows is a fun mockumentary about four vampires living in a flat in Wellington, that piles on the laughs while keeping within the macabre tones of classic vampire stories. It’s goofy without feeling dumb, which is what tends to happen in films like this. It’s also at times very morbid and violent, but in a lighthearted, fun sort of way.
There’s just something hilarious about Taika Waititi preparing to drain someone of their life-giving fluids by placing newspaper all around only to hit an artery and spray blood all over the room. Nominated for Crystal Bear Award at Berlin Film Festival, and winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival 2014.
“It’s hard to describe how genuinely enjoyable this movie is. It’s the kind of film that will put a smile on your face, no matter what mood you’re in. “A comedy that should put New Zealand on the map, with a share house everyone will want to spend some time in.” Brent Davidson, SWITCH.
“Filled with hilarious depictions of zombies, werewolves, and of course, vampires, this is one of the best horror comedies around.” William Brownridge, TIFF 2014 Review

Director Bruno Dumont’s Camille Claudel 1915 sees Juliette Binoche take the lead as the famous French artist and lover of Auguste Rodin. Camille is placed by her brother, the Catholic poet Paul Claudel, in a remote mental institution where she remains for 30 years up until her death. Dumont constructs a stripped-down formal universe that bends not inwards to his tragic heroine, but pushes her outwards and towards acceptance of her desperate situation. “A deeply affecting film about the ordeal of the sculptor, and Rodin’s lover, Camille Claudel, who spent 30 years in an asylum.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian “Juliette Binoche gives yet another astonishing performance in a career of great performances.” Sheila O’Malley, Roger Ebert Reviews

Distributor: Soda Pictures The colour blue dominates the filmmakers' palette in this visually stunning film about the real-life adventurer Thor Heyerdahl. Heyerdahl developed a theory that Polynesia was populated by settlers from South America, rather than Asia as widely assumed by the scientific community. In 1947, unable to find a publisher to print his thesis, he hatches a daring plan to cross the Pacific on a balsa wood raft, just like the ancient Incas before him. Unshakeable in his determination, Heyerdahl simply refuses to give up despite the fact that the scientific community openly mocks him. He can’t find funding for the voyage, his first recruit for the raft’s crew is a stocky refrigerator salesman, and he himself can’t swim.

SATURDAY 22 NOVEMBER @ 10PM VENUE: BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL France/Belgium. 2013. Director: Guillaume Gallienne. Cast: Guillaume Gallienne, Françoise Fabian, Yves Jacques, André Marcon, Nanou Garcia, Yvon Back. Duration: 1hr.25min. Cert: 15. Distributor: Cinefile As a piece of cinema Me, Myself And Mum shouldn’t work. It is a confessional piece about sexual identity written and directed by French stage actor, and based on his own solo stage performance. Fortunately for all concerned it works brilliantly, relying heavily on Gallienne’s own charisma, versatility and comic ingenuity. It deals with his relationship with an overbearing mother, who brings him up as an effeminate boy while his two siblings bond with his macho father (André Marcon) and go off on rugby weekends. Guillaume indulges in more gentle pursuits, such as a holiday in Spain where he is taught to dance – except he learns all the female moves to much hilarity from the assembled company. Gallienne, in case you don’t notice, also plays his mother, leading to some nimble screen work in which they 16 // FOYLEFILMFESTIVAL // 2014
meet and converse on screen but the artifice seems effortless. Through all the indignities Gallienne emerges mostly sunny side up, completely in charge of his persona and the material. “The tone manages to be both poignant and hilarious with a Pedro Almodovaresque affection for the female of the species. It’s a crowd-pleaser and only the most stern of hearts and minds could fail to be seduced by its charm and the incredible persona of Gallienne.” Richard Mowe, EyeForFilm “Not just an amusing film chronicling a journey of self-discovery. It is also an homage to women – his mother, his aunts, his female friends – with all their faults and Guillaume’s eventual discovery of his true sexuality is both hugely funny and deeply moving.” Judith Prescott, French Cinema Review
USA. 1982. Director: Steven Spielberg. Cast: Henry Thomas, Drew Barrymore, Robert MacNaughton. Duration: 1hr.55mins. Cert: PG. As Elliot and E.T. bond, it soon becomes clear that E.T. must find his way home before government officials capture him and experiment upon him. Together, E.T., Elliot and Elliot’s family and friends help reunite E.T. with his spaceship. Winner of four Oscars® “This is a brilliant film about the alienated and powerless experience of being a child, especially a child forced to absorb the scalding ironies of divorce; it works as a brilliant metaphor for this pain as well being a superb sci-fi adventure.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian Special programme strand as part of the UK-wide season of films and events celebrating all things Sci Fi.

She is the author of critically acclaimed books including “Northern Protestants - An Unsettled People”, “Sophia’s Story” and “Bear In Mind These Dead”.
Producer Sally Angel will introduce this screening and take part in a postscreening discussion. The hell of the Holocaust rises again in this remarkable account of how Britain’s army film unit commissioned producer Sidney Bernstein to make a documentary record of the Nazi death camps, using footage pouring in from the liberation of Belsen, Buchenwald, Dachau, Auschwitz and elsewhere. Director André Singer’s Night Will Fall charts the historical development of Bernstein’s work, combining extracts from the original film. The commentary comes partly from earlier archive interviews, particularly Bernstein speaking in 1982 (Hitchcock appears largely in voice-over), and others who were involved in the original production, and partly in interviews with contemporary historians, including
from London’s Imperial War Museum where the archive material is held and whose efforts made the final restoration possible. The final lines of Richard Crossman’s original script reveal the resonance of Singer’s title: “Unless the world learns the lessons these pictures teach, night will fall.” “Night Will Fall isn’t simply a film about the war, it documents the power of emerging technologies to reveal and publicise war crimes – something that also feels acutely relevant today.” Anna Smith, The Daily Telegraph “André Singer has produced a worthy companion piece to Sidney Bernstein’s 1945 footage of the German concentration camps.” Mark Kermode, The Observer
