WELCOME WELCOME to Foyle Film Festival’s 2017 Education Programme, which brings together an exciting and diverse range of films, documentaries and workshops, exploring themes that resonate with young people. As this year marks our 30th anniversary, the festival looks at other key milestones such as India's independence from the British Empire in 1947 and the 20th anniversary screening of the Holocaust film, Life Is Beautiful. The post-primary programme also features a special screening of Goodbye Christopher Robin with, schedule permitting, a special introduction by the star of the movie Domhnall Gleeson. Everyone has a memory of Winnie the Pooh from their childhood, but the author A. A. Milne himself was something of a mystery. The film provides a rare glimpse into his relationship with his son, Christopher Robin, whose toys inspired the magical world of Winnie the Pooh. An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth To Power is the follow up to the Academy Award® winning An Inconvenient Truth, which brought climate change to the forefront of mainstream culture. Former Vice President Al Gore carries on his tireless fight to educate the next generation of climate champions. As Al Gore argues: “Film is the best way to deliver a powerful message”. Themes of friendship, family, adventure and growing up are all explored in the primary programme, which launches with the magical animation The Star, the greatest story ever told – the first Christmas. While in The Jungle Bunch a group of animal friends must work together to save their beloved jungle from destruction.
On 22 November, the festival will acknowledge the fantastic work produced by young Moving Image Arts students at CCEA’s Moving Image Arts Showcase in Brunswick Moviebowl. Each winning filmmaker will be presented with a unique award handcrafted by City of Derry Crystal. On key dates throughout November, the Nerve Centre’s Creative Learning Centre team will bring the programme into classrooms giving students an opportunity to use digital technologies to explore this year’s festival themes. The workshops always fill up fast so don’t delay in booking! Finally, we’re delighted that for our milestone anniversary the main festival programme will run from Friday 17 November to Sunday 26 November – an additional five days of exclusive screenings, special guests, events and industry workshops. Visit www.foylefilmfestival.org for full details. I’ll see you at the movies! Bernie McLaughlin Foyle Film Festival Director & Programmer

DOMHNALL GLEESON TO INTRODUCE SCREENING
VENUE: BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL SUITABLE FOR: KEY STAGES 3 & 4 AREAS OF LEARNING: HISTORY / WAU / LOCAL & GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP / PSHE THEMES: FAMILY / CHILDHOOD / GROWING UP / IMAGINATION / WWI / PTSD / FATHER-SON RELATIONSHIP UK.2017. Director: Simon Curtis. Cast: Margot Robbie, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Macdonald, Will Tilston, Alex Lawther, Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Duration: 1hr.47mins. Cert: PG Schedule permitting, Domhnall Gleeson will introduce the screening.
Everyone has a memory of Winnie the Pooh from their childhood, but the author himself was something of a mystery to most of us. Goodbye Christopher Robin reveals that Milne suffered from a severe case of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after serving in World War I. This condition shapes the whole of the film and his relationship with his son, nicknamed Billy Moon but really named Christopher Robin, upon whom the classic character was based. The film provides a rare glimpse into the relationship between A. A. Milne (Domhnall Gleeson) and his son Christopher Robin, whose toys inspired the magical world of Winnie the Pooh.
“ The magic of the books is beautifully rendered on screen, as their imagination runs wild and the audience are brought along in their make-believe games. I challenge anyone not to get a little emotional as you see illustrations from such treasured childhood classics brought to life!” Sneh Rupra, Entertainment Fuse
“ Startling and affecting rendering of the incalculable cost of a lost childhood.” Trevor Johnston, Radio Times
“ Let Goodbye Christopher Robin bring a little joy into your world for a couple of hours; it has a hundred acres of heart, but it will also make you think, think, think.” Eric Hillis, Movie Waffler

THE CINEMA TRAVELLERS
TUESDAY 28 NOVEMBER @ 10.30AM
VENUE: BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL SUITABLE FOR: KEY STAGES 3 & 4, SIXTH FORM AREAS OF LEARNING: HISTORY / GEOGRAPHY / POLITICS / WAU / LOCAL & GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP / PSHE THEMES: CINEMA / TRAVEL / TRADITION India.2016. Directors: Shirley Abraham, Amit Madheshiya. Duration: 1hr.36mins. Cert: U Showmen riding cinema lorries have brought the wonder of the movies to faraway villages in India once every year. Seven decades on, as their cinema projectors crumble and film reels become scarce, their patrons are lured by slick digital technology. A benevolent showman, a shrewd exhibitor and a maverick projector mechanic bear a beautiful burden – to keep the last traveling cinemas of the world running. The film was inspired by director Madheshiya’s award-winning photographs from 2010 that captured moments of joy, despair and wonderment as villagers gazed transfixed at the big screen. At one time, there were thousands of nomadic cinemas wending their way around the Indian countryside and bringing the magic of the movies to those that would otherwise never experience it; today, there are fewer than 40.
The aforementioned Bapu’s Akshay Touring Pictures is one of two companies, along with Sumedh Touring Pictures run by the enterprising Mohamed, that Abraham and Madheshiya follow at close quarters, observing the daily trials of keeping such a show on the road.
“ Intimate documentary is ode to enduring power of film… Travelling Indian movie houses and the lives of the men behind them create a moving portrait of a changing medium.” Benjamin Lee, The Guardian
“ Although The Cinema Travellers simply could have been a sad chronicling of the struggles of a once-vibrant industry in its final throws, its triumph lies in how it also captures the magic of this unique, collective movie-watching experience.” Alex Ritman, The Hollywood Reporter

Guido must now use his imagination again – this time to transform his son's tragic new surroundings into a magical wonderland. Winner of three Oscars®
“ Life is Beautiful happens to be one of the most beautiful films ever made. It's one of the most unorthodox war films in the way that it is a comedy for a large portion, a romance for another, and a drama for the rest. Its genius lies in the way it makes a person love the characters, as well as the story. It sucks you in from start to finish, and leaves you in awe of the ending. It is just brilliant.” Ben Russell, The Movie Man
