FOYLE FILM FESTIVAL

INTERCULTURAL & ANTI-RACISM PRO Monday 24 - Friday 28 March 2014 Foyle Film Festival’s Intercultural & Anti Racism Programme takes place from Monday 24 - Friday 28 March. For the ninth consecutive year, this important event offers primary, post-primary schools, colleges, universities, community groups, and the general public, a programme of international films, documentaries, presentations, workshops, and outreach screenings, exploring the themes and issues involved. This annual event, organised by the Nerve Centre, is aimed at raising awareness around issues such as racism, discrimination and harassment - including racist bullying. It seeks to educate children, young people, and the wider public, to accept, value, and embrace diversity in all its forms - whether race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, the poor, migrants, minorities, those with physical disabilities - as well as encouraging awareness of local and global issues like war, human rights abuses, and the environment. The long-term objectives and outcomes of the Intercultural & Anti-Racism Programme are to promote tolerance and inclusion.

The education programme showcases feature films, short films and documentaries from around the world in an effort to bring different landscapes, languages, beliefs, and cultures into the classroom. The objectives of this diverse programme of educational events are to broaden children¹s and young people’s cultural awareness, literacy skills and cine-literacy abilities. When possible, the programme also provides additional free resources for schools, including books and work packs that can be taken back into the classroom in order to aid and inspire future learning. The primary programme features Mr. Peabody & Sherman, The Lego Movie and a host of hands-on Page 2

digital workshops challenging pupils to create their own soundtrack and animated super heroes, while FabLab invites parents and children to come together to explore the themes and issues involved in a unique one-off creative workshop.

Special post-primary screenings include The Book Thief - the story of a spirited and courageous young girl who transforms the lives of everyone around her when she is sent to live with a foster family in World War II Germany. Mandela: The Long Walk To Freedom celebrates Nelson Mandela’s extraordinary journey from his childhood in a rural village via 27 years in solitary confinement through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected President of South Africa. The Butler follows the changing tides of American politics and race relations - from the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, to the Freedom Riders and Black Panther movements, to the war in Vietnam and the Watergate scandal, and beyond.

The evening programme features Fruitvale Station - a moving exploration of the real-life story of 22-year-old Oscar Grant, who was killed by a white transit police officer in the early hours of New Year’s Day in 2009. Also screening is BAFTA and Emmy Award winning director John Pilger’s new film Utopia, which provides a powerful insight into a secret Australia and breaks what amounts to a national silence about the indigenous first people - the oldest, most enduring presence on Earth.

The programme also includes the powerful Channel 4 Dispatches documentary Hunted. The documentary demonstrates, in shocking and harrowing terms, how gay men in Russia are being “hunted” by vigilante gangs and beaten up because of their sexuality.

& OGRAMME Investigative reporter Liz Mackean and the director of Hunted Ben Steele attend the festival to introduce the documentary and take part in a post screening discussion. Liz Mackean specialised in Northern Irish politics and the peace process. Controversially, her investigation into Sir Jimmy Savile, which uncovered evidence that he was a serial child abuser, was dropped by the BBC. Despite it not being aired, Liz and her colleague won a prestigious London Press Club award for Scoop of the Year

Ben Steele is a Director with 10 years experience on an eclectic mix of films. acclaimed single documentaries include Remembering Mum for Channel 4 - that follows a police investigation into an unsolved murder (this film was short listed for a grierson award).

This year’s Intercultural & anti-Racism Programme offers something for all ages and tastes across two main venues - the Nerve Centre and Brunswick Moviebowl - with additional events taking place in primary and post-primary schools and colleges throughout the city and beyond. an outreach strand of this year’s programme will also take place in the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny. Bernie Mclaughlin Festival Director & Programmer

The Foyle Film Festival Intercultural & Anti-Racism Programme is funded by DCAL through Northern Ireland Screen. Venue Partner is Brunswick Moviebowl.

CGI-animated buddy comedy. After years of fruitless warning of his farmyard brethren of the coming Thanksgiving doom, Reggie the Turkey finds himself spared as the annual Pardoned Turkey by the President of the USA himself. However, Reggie’s easy life is disrupted by fanatic turkey Jake, who drags him along with the insane idea of going back in time to make sure turkeys are not part of the first Thanksgiving. Through foolhardiness and luck, the pair manage to take an experimental time machine to do just that. Now in 1621 at the Plymouth colony, Reggie and Jake find themselves in the middle of a turkey clan’s struggle for survival. “Opens...with a Thanksgiving dinner table with a succulent stuffed and roasted bird as the centrepiece. The camera then pans upwards to see the horrified face of a turkey as he realises his destiny. This is promising stuff - a mainstream children’s film equating a likeable talking animal with dinner is relatively bold subject material for a children’s film.... Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh turns his camera on his country’s legacy of genocide. Part essay, part documentary, The Missing Picture recounts his struggle to survive the Khmer Rouge and its extermination of an estimated 1.8 million people. Panh’s family was among the victims. After being forced into labour camps, his parents and siblings died of starvation or overwork. With The Missing Picture, Panh attempts to tell this story by recreating his lost images in an original and poignant way. Nominated, Best Foreign Language Film, 2014 Academy Awards. “…Like…The Act Of Killing (2012), The Missing Picture is about the cathartic power of confronting the darkest corners of human experience through film. The ‘missing pictures’ were destroyed as part of a grand, horrible lie, and the thorough excavation of these stolen memories must happen before anyone can move on.” Robert Greene, BFI France/Kingdom of Cambodia.2013. RELEVANCE: KEY STAGE 3 (YEARS 9 & 10), KEY STAGE 4, & SIXTH FORM SUBJECT LINKS: HISTORY, SCIENCE, EMU, RE THEMES: KNOWLEDGE, MORALITY, JUSTICE, ARCHAEOLOGY, ASTRONOMY, CONFLICT RESOLUTION

In Chile’s Atacama Desert, one of the world’s driest regions, astronomers peer deep into the cosmos in search for answers concerning the origins of life. Nearby, a group of women sift through the sand searching for body parts of loved ones, dumped unceremoniously by General Pinochet’s brutal regime. Stunning images of the arid landscapes and the star-filled heavens are married to illuminating interviews with astrophysicists and survivors from the Pinochet years. One scientist speaks of how astronomers only ever deal with the past, since starlight often takes thousands of years to reach Earth. Guzmn parallels this perspective via scenes of elderly women who have combed the desert for nearly three decades, looking for mass graves. All of these subjects are confronting the past in their own way, seeking answers and resolution where there may be none. “Drawing on the testimonies of some fascinating interviewees, and filled with dazzling digital images of galaxies and landscapes, it’s a film that makes you ponder the mysteries of human existence anew.” Tom Dawson, Total Film

Based on Pat Barker’s novel of the same name, Regeneration tells the story of soldiers of World War One sent to an asylum for emotional troubles. Two of the soldiers meeting there are Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, two of England’s most important WW1 poets. Set in Scotland in 1917 at the end of World War I, Regeneration focuses on the moral consequences of war and its psychological toll. The film concentrates on three soldiers and the psychiatrist who treats them at Craiglockhart Hospital, which specialises in restoring shell-shocked soldiers to good mental health and returning them to the battlefield, if at all possible. Regeneration is a powerful war drama that exposes the futility, madness and horror of war, and what it does to the human spirit. “The careful filming and measured performances all layer into a war film that is poignantly human.”

Plot For Peace is a documentary thriller that tells the untold story behind the secret events leading up to the end of apartheid and ultimately the release of Nelson Mandela. For the first time, heads of state, generals, diplomats, master spies and anti-apartheid fighters reveal how Africa’s front line states helped end apartheid. Their improbable key to Mandela’s prison cell was a mysterious French businessman, dubbed “Monsieur Jacques” in classified correspondence. His trade secret was trust. “A gripping, covert account of the last days of apartheid.”

FRUITVALE STATION VENUE: NERVE CENTRE CINEMA 1

A moving exploration of the real-life story of 22-year-old Oscar Grant, who was killed by a white transit police officer in the early hours of New Year’s Day in 2009. The film focuses on the last 24 hours of Grant’s life as he crosses paths with friends, enemies, family and strangers on the last day of 2008. Grant was lying on his stomach and was handcuffed when the officer, Johannes Mehserle, shot him in the back. Mehserle said he intended to reach for a Taser and shot him by mistake. He was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to two years. There is no doubt that the film has arrived at a pertinent moment in the discourse over racism, gun violence and the killing of young black men in the US, and has made a significant contribution to the debate. Winner of the Un Certain Regard Avenir Prize at Cannes, and the Audience and Grand Jury Awards at Sundance in 2013.

“A shrewd script and career-launching performances drive a tragic modern story that carries heavy social weight.” Todd McCarthy, Hollywood Reporter USA.2013. Director: Ryan Coogler. Cast: Kevin Durand, Michael B. Jordan, Octavia Spencer. Duration: 1hr.25mins. Cert: 15 page 21

UTOPIA

VENUE: NERVE CENTRE CINEMA 1 Following his hard-hitting documentary The War You Don’t See, BAFTA and Emmy Award winning director John Pilger’s new film is a rare and powerful insight into a secret Australia and breaks what amounts to a national silence about the indigenous first people - the oldest, most enduring presence on Earth. An epic film in its production, scope and revelations, Utopia reveals that apartheid is deep within Australia’s past and present and that Aboriginal people are still living in abject poverty and Third World conditions, with a low life expectancy and disproportionately high rate of deaths in police custody. “Nearly two decades after The Secret Country, John Pilger is still angry about the treatment of Indigenous Australians. After you watch his film, you’ll understand why.” The Guardian

“POWERFUL…PASSIONATE… COMMANDING.” Total Film UK.2013. Director(s): John Pilger & Alan Lowery. Cast: John Pilger, Jon Altman, Pat Anderson. Duration: 1hr.50mins. Cert: 12A

THE SELFISH GIANT VENUE: NERVE CENTRE CINEMA 1

The Selfish Giant is a contemporary fable about two scrappy 13-year-old workingclass friends in the UK who seek fortune by getting involved with a local scrap dealer and criminal, leading to tragic consequences.

They begin collecting scrap metal for him using a horse and cart. Swifty has a natural gift with horses while Arbor emulates Kitten - keen to impress him and make some money. However, Kitten favours Swifty, leaving Arbor feeling hurt and excluded, driving a wedge between the boys. Arbor becomes increasingly greedy and exploitative, becoming more like Kitten. Tensions build, leading to a tragic event, which transforms them all. “Clio Barnard joins the ranks of British cinema’s child’s-eye realists with a lyrical portrait of young rebellion in England’s green and wasted land.”

Jonathan Romney, Sight & Sound

“The Selfish Giant is devastating social realism in the mode of Ken Loach’s Kes.” Annlee Ellingson, Los Angeles Times UK.2013. Director: Clio Barnard. Cast: Conner Chapman, Shaun Thomas, Sean Gilder. Duration: 1hr.31mins. Cert: 15

Based on a graphic novel, Abdellatif Kechiche’s 2013 Palme d’Or winner spans several years as it follows Adèle on her path from student to teacher. Her story begins when, as a teenager, she falls for Emma, a twentysomething art student with a shock of blue hair. It’s the trigger for a relationship that will define - and devour - Adèle. Blue Is The Warmest Colour bestows epic status on a subject usually handled coyly or ignored altogether: female desire. The heightened treatment feels entirely apt - this is first love, in all its intoxicating, devastating glory. “Fearless, relatable and beautiful, this is one of the year’s best...”

Emma Simmonds, Total Film

“A sprawling, emotionally absorbing tale of young love...” Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter France/Belgium/Spain.2013. Director: Abdellatif Kechiche. Cast: Adele Exarchopoulos, Lea Seydoux. Duration: 2hrs.59mins. Cert: 18. Language: French with English subtitles.

HUNTED

VENUE: NERVE CENTRE CINEMA 1 With special introduction and Q&A with investigative reporter Liz Mackean and Director Ben Steele. This powerful Dispatches documentary illustrates, in shocking and harrowing terms, how gay men in Russia are being “hunted” by vigilante gangs and beaten up because of their sexuality. Hunted depicts a country troubled by disturbing violence and distressing intimidation, despite Russia’s official welcome to gay athletes and spectators at the recent Winter Olympics in Sochi. However, this seems a very hollow gesture when the reality seems to suggest that only 1% of gays live completely openly in Russia. Investigative reporter Liz Mackean tells the cameras: “We’ve filmed what they don’t want you to see. The real Russia - a place where gay people are hunted like animals.”

UK.2013. Director: Ben Steele. Investigative Reporter: Liz Mackean. Duration: 50mins. Cert: 15

CLOSE-UP ON LIZ MACKEAN

CLOSE-UP ON BEN STEELE

Liz MacKean is now a freelance journalist and broadcaster; she’s been working on Dispatches - Channel 4’s leading documentary strand. Her most recent programme Hunted investigated the vigilante gangs in Russia who target and attack gay people. Before that Liz was at the BBC - most recently as a correspondent on Newsnight, the weekday current affairs programme.

Ben Steele is a Director with ten years experience on an eclectic mix of films. Acclaimed single documentaries include The Trouble With Working Women for BBC2 investigating why men still dominate so many top jobs; Remembering Mum for Channel 4 that follows a police investigation into an unsolved murder (this film was short listed for a Grierson award); and Posh And Posher for BBC2 which asks why public school boys dominate politics.

Liz specialised in Northern Irish politics and the peace process. Her series about toxic dumping in Ivory Coast led to a Daniel Pearl Award for Outstanding International Investigative Journalism. Controversially, her investigation into Sir Jimmy Savile, which uncovered evidence that he was a serial child abuser, was dropped by the BBC. Despite it not being aired, Liz and her colleague won a prestigious London Press Club award for Scoop of the Year. Outside broadcasting, Liz runs workshops on the role of the media in crisis communications and reputational damage.

Series Director and Series Producer projects include From Scratch for Channel 4 that explores the global system of mass production; the drama recon series Gods & Monsters exploring the beliefs of our ancestors for Channel 4, and the series How To Beat Tough Times for BBC2 looking at the recent financial crash. As an experienced self shooting director Ben has filmed with explosive crews a mile below the surface of the earth in the Arctic Circle, on night raids with armed police in South African townships and with trauma surgeons in the UK.
