At Zuckerman's barn, Wilbur meets a host of animals and later learns from them that come winter, he will be on the dinner menu. Cast: Brad Garrett, Jeff Foxworthy, Phil Austin, Cyrille Autin, Yann Bean. Duration: 1hr.25mins. Cert: U. Language: English. They will have to endure a barrage from enemy soldiers, planes and a squadron of evil birds of prey led by the infamous Red Falcon.

Adapted from Michael Bond’s beloved books, Paddington follows the comic misadventures of a polite young Peruvian bear with a passion for all things British, who travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he begins to realise that city life is not all he had imagined – until he meets the kind Brown family, who read the label around his neck (‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’) and offer him a temporary haven. But little do the Browns realise just how much comic mayhem one young bear will bring to their family life, and when this rarest of bears catches the eye of a sinister, seductive taxidermist, it isn’t long before his home – and very existence – is under threat. Nominated for a BAFTA.

“ Paddington is beautifully constructed, intelligently written, wondrously acted by its ensemble cast, and simply a joy to behold.” Richard Propes, The Independent Critic

Director: Louis Malle. Cast: Gaspard Manesse, Raphael Fejtö, Francine Racette. Duration: 1hr.44mins. Cert: 12A. Distributor: BFI One of the simplest films ever made about the Holocaust, Louis Malle tackles the issue not on the war front or in a concentration camp, but at the personal level, more specifically the impact that a war and racism could have on children, one day to become adults. Malle brings his own story to the film so effectively and touchingly, without being dramatically sentimental, showing the children going out into the world prematurely with dark stories, guilt on their soul, and living with fear; or children simply marching out to concentration camps with proud defiance and the fear of dying any moment. It’s a story of rivalry and friendship between two bright boys, out of place to the ordinary bullies around. One,

Julien Quentin, precocious, highly intelligent, fiercely individualistic and faithless. The other, Jean Bonnet, talented, alone, constantly afraid and with a bold defiant belief in his religion. What starts out as a rivalry soon develops into friendship, but ends abruptly with the capture of one and the guilt of the other to regret forever: if he wouldn’t have turned, what would have happened? The film’s beauty lies in that it solely concentrates on the boys and the boarding school run by the monastery. The sole ‘outside’ incident is the Vichy men’s attempt to throw an old Jewish man out of a posh restaurant, but it still impinges on school life, since Quentin knows the extent to which a man can be persecuted for religion. Soon, he is to know more, through searing experience that would maim him for life. And make him a better man. Nominated for an Oscar®. Winner of a BAFTA for Best Direction.

THE IMITATION GAME

SUITABLE FOR: KEY STAGES 3 & 4 CURRICULUM LINKS: HISTORY / POLITICS / SECOND WORLD WAR THEMES: WAR / TEAM WORK UK/USA.2014. Director: Morten Tyldum. Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Mark Strong, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance, Allen Leech, Matthew Beard. Duration: 1hr.54mins. Cert: 12A Based on the real life story of legendary cryptanalyst Alan Turing, the film portrays the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team of code-breakers at Britain’s top-secret Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of World War II. When Turing demands to be put in charge, even petitioning Prime Minister Winston Churchill, it seems never in doubt that he’ll solve the riddle of the Enigma machine, a device that changes its settings every 24 hours to make detecting coding patterns nigh-on impossible. But this achievement, aided by Keira Knightley’s crossword-fanatic Joan Clarke and under the watchful eye of Mark Strong’s MI6 operative, is only part of The Imitation Game, which takes a darker turn with revelations that Turing is gay. The result is less a portrait of WWII innovation than it is of a man drowning in secrets at a time when homosexuality was illegal. Nominated for eight Oscars®.

DREAMCATCHER MONDAY 23 MARCH @ 8PM VENUE: NERVE CENTRE CINEMA 1 UK/USA.2015. Director: Kim Longinotto. Cast: Brenda Myers-Powell. Duration: 1hr.38mins. Cert: 15. Distributor: Dogwoof

Dreamcatcher takes us into a hidden world through the eyes of one of its survivors: Brenda Myers-Powell. A former teenage prostitute with a drug habit, Brenda defied the odds to become a powerful advocate for change in her community. Dreamcatcher explores the cycle of neglect, violence and exploitation, which each year leaves thousands upon thousands of girls and women feeling that prostitution is their only option to survive. With unprecedented access, multi-award winning director, Kim Longinotto paints a vivid portrait of a community struggling to come to terms with some of its most painful truths and of the extraordinary woman who uses her past to inspire others to survive. With warmth and humour, Brenda gives hope to those who have none. Winner of World Cinema Directing Award at Sundance Film Festival 2015.

“ Unflinching but uplifting, Longinotto’s film shows how even one person, if they put their minds to it, can make an enormous difference. The director, meanwhile, goes on to further cement her reputation for unsentimental but moving documentary work that looks to small stories in order to paint a bigger picture.” Amber Wilkinson, EyeForFilm

UK/Germany/Austria/France.2009. Director: Sherry Hormann. Cast: Liya Kebede, Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall, Juliet Stevenson, Anthony Mackie. Duration: 2hrs. Cert: 18

Winner of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent, Dear White People is a sly, provocative satire of race relations in the age of Obama. Writer/director Justin Simien follows a group of African American students as they navigate campus life and racial politics at a predominantly white college.

“ A brilliant commentary on the concept of a post-racial society.”

The Necessities of Life is an engaging drama about an Inuit hunter and family man diagnosed with tuberculosis, and sent from his Far North home to a sanitarium in early’50s Quebec. Separated from his wife and daughters and only partially grasping the reasons for his interment, Tiivii struggles to connect with the French-speaking “Whites” who surround him. The film’s exploration of cultural barriers and human connections may be familiar, but Pilon’s documentarian approach elevates a potentially sentimental storyline to something much more affecting.

Misa Shikuma, Sound On Sight

“ As smart and fearless a debut as I have seen from an American filmmaker in quite some time.” A.O. Scott, New York Times

“ Provides insightful and moving perspectives on the struggles of an indigenous society against human forces as inexorable as their rugged environment.” Nora Lee Mandel, Film-Forward Review

Desert Flower has all the trappings of a good fairy tale, especially those moments of despair so extreme that a happy ending seems almost impossible. But what makes Sherry Hormann’s film astounding is that it’s real. The autobiography-turned-biopic is based on the life of African nomad, supermodel and activist Waris Dirie. Born in Somalia, Dirie escaped marriage at 13 (she was to become the fourth wife of a 65-year-old man) by walking alone for days through the desert to find a grandmother she had never met. She then moved to London and found work as a cleaning woman at McDonald’s. While mopping the floors, she was discovered by a renowned fashion photographer who turned her into a supermodel. After finding fame, Dirie dropped a bombshell: At the age of three, she had suffered ritual female genital mutilation (FGM), a horrifying practice that meant lifelong pain for her and death for a number of her family members.

“ A well-made film that… manages to be both a classic feel-good story and about as far from a feel-good story as you can get… The film makes bluntly clear that this is a trauma that lasts a lifetime.” Neil Genzlinger, NY Times.com

AU REVOIR LES ENFANTS (GOODBYE, CHILDREN) FRIDAY 27 MARCH @ 1PM VENUE: TOWER MUSEUM Introductory talk from Donal McAnallen on ‘Rediscovering GAA members who fought in the First World War’. The Green Fields of France is a poetic documentary exploring the role of Irish men who fought and died during the First World War. John Banville, Peter Fallon and Frank McGuinness lend their voices to the work of Irish poets Patrick McGill, Francis Ledwidge and Thomas Kettle, all of whom fought during the conflict. It is estimated that over 300,000 Irishmen fought during the First World War although their involvement has long been a sensitive issue. The work of poets such as Ledwidge and Kettle offers a unique insight into the mindset of men from Ireland fighting across the Western Front. The screening will also include a talk by Donal McAnallen from the GAA’s ‘Forgotten Gaelic Volunteers’ project. He will show how the organisation’s nine-month research project is aiming to identify GAA members from Ulster who died during the First World War and uncover the sometimes forgotten volunteers. Donal will deliver a talk and present some of the project’s findings to date.

Australia.1987. Director: Steve Jodrell. Cast: Deborra-Lee Furness, Tony Barry, Simone Buchanan, Gillian Jones, David Franklin, Bill McCluskey. Duration: 1hr.34mins. Cert: 15

UK.2010. Director: Gabriel Range. Cast: Wunmi Mosaku, Isaach De Bankolé, Lubna Azabal. Duration: 1hr.22mins. Cert: 15

Not to be confused with the more recent Michael Fassbender movie, this Australian gem follows Asta Cadell, a lawyer travelling through the Australian outback, on holiday. Asta stops in a small Western Australian town after her motorcycle breaks down and shacks up with Tim Curtis, the local mechanic, while fixing it. She then becomes involved in helping Curtis’ teenage daughter, Lizzie, who has been recently raped by Danny Fiske, the son of a wealthy, well-known citizen and his gang. Asta persuades Lizzie to press charges against Danny, but the local population becomes determined to keep the incident a secret at any cost and soon Asta and the Curtis family’s lives are in danger.

Based on the true story of Mende Nazer who, at 12 years old, was abducted from her Sudanese village by progovernment Arab militia and sold into slavery in Khartoum. After six years she is sent to London, where her name is changed, but her miserable life of servitude continues. Her passport is taken away and she is told that her father will die if she goes to the authorities. Fortunately she meets a sympathetic person who seems to offer her the hope of escape and reunion with her family back in Sudan. For all the film's optimism an end title states that there are around 5,000 'slave' workers currently in Britain. A largely hidden injustice that needs increased exposure in order to bring the problem into the open and, hopefully, help to eradicate.

“ Where The Accused manipulated sensation, this avoids the gratuitous voyeurism of including the rape scene. Working by allusion, it succeeds in striking exactly the right note, responsibly, movingly, and yet rivetingly.” Time Out London
