Welcome
For over a decade now Foyle Film Festival’s Intercultural & Anti Racism Programme has offered primary and post-primary schools, colleges, community groups and the general public a host of international films, documentaries, workshops and outreach screenings, exploring themes and issues such as racism, discrimination and harassment. It seeks to educate children, young people and the wider public to accept, value and embrace diversity in all its forms – whether race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, the underprivileged, migrants, minorities, those with physical disabilities, as well as encouraging awareness of local and global issues like war, human rights abuses and the environment. The objectives of this diverse programme are to broaden children’s and young people’s cultural awareness, literacy skills and cine-literacy abilities. The long-term objectives and outcomes of the Intercultural & Anti-Racism Programme are to promote tolerance and inclusion. We’re delighted that as part of this year’s programme we are premiering one of Disney’s highly anticipated films for 2016, The Jungle Book, on Sunday, April 10 in Brunswick Moviebowl – 5 days before its general release. Starring Starring Scarlett Johansson, Bill Murray and Christopher Walken, the upcoming film is a re-telling of the 1967 classic animation film about a boy who grew up in the jungle under the care of a wolf family. Other highlights include a Roald Dahl strand commemorating the centenary of the celebrated author’s birth. This special event will give primary schools a unique opportunity to see the Roald Dahl classics James And The Giant Peach, Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, and Matilda on the big screen. The post-primary programme marks the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare with a special 20th anniversary screening of Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet in Brunswick Moviebowl and the seven-time Oscar-winning film Schindler’s List. The Nerve Centre’s Creative Learning Centre team will also bring the Intercultural & Anti-Racism Programme into schools giving students a unique opportunity to use fun ICT skills in the classroom in order to explore this year’s festival themes. Workshops book up fast so don’t delay.

WE COME AS FRIENDS
VENUE: NERVE CENTRE CINEMA
France/Austria.2014. Director: Hubert Sauper. Duration: 1hr.50mins. Cert: 18. Language: English/ Chinese/Arabic
We Come As Friends is a modern odyssey, a dizzying, science fiction-like journey into the heart of Africa. At the moment when the Sudan, the continent’s biggest country, is being divided into two nations, an old ‘civilizing’ pathology re-emerges – that of colonialism, clash of empires, and yet new episodes of bloody (and holy) wars over land and resources. The director of Darwin’s Nightmare takes us on this voyage in his tiny, self-made flying machine out of tin and canvas, he leads us into most improbable locations and into people’s thoughts and dreams, in both stunning and heart-breaking ways. Chinese oil workers, UN peacekeepers, Sudanese warlords, and American evangelists ironically weave common ground in this documentary. “A devastating, haunting, but absolutely necessary travelogue of South Sudan. This film is an instructional in how imperialism in Africa has not died off, but merely taken on a new form.” Dan Schindel, Nonfics.com

THE DANCING BOYS OF AFGHANISTAN VENUE: NERVE CENTRE CINEMA
Afghanistan.2010. Director: Jamie Doran. Cast: Najibullah Quraishi, Arun Rath. Duration: 1hr. Cert: 15
The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan exposes the horrific practice called Bacha Bazi, in which young Afghan boys are sold to warlords and powerful businessmen to be trained as dancers who perform for male audiences in women’s clothing and are then used and traded for sex. The practice is sadly making a comeback in that country. Many hundreds of young boys living in extreme poverty are lured off the streets on the promise of a new life away from destitution, unaware their real fate is to be used for entertainment by the warlords and other powerful men of Afghanistan. Having gained remarkable access inside a sexual exploitation ring, award-winning Afghan journalist Najibullah Quraishi investigates this illegal practice, the consequences of which are shrouded by a focus on the war. The film exposes the lack of support from those in authority and explores possible responses to the plight of children in this conflict zone.

A documentary that follows drag queen Panti Bliss: part glamorous aunt, part Jessica Rabbit, she’s a wittily incisive performer with charisma to burn who is widely regarded as one of the best drag queens in the world. Created by Rory O’Neill, Panti is also an accidental activist and in her own words ‘a court jester, whose role is to say the un-sayable’. In recent years, Rory has become a figurehead for LGBT rights in Ireland and since the 2014 scandal around Pantigate, his fight for equality and against homophobia has become recognised across the world. “Triumphant.” The Irish Times “The extraordinary story of a boy, a drag queen, and a nation.” Graham Norton

George Tiller died in Kansas in 2009, shot through the eye by an anti-abortion protestor. His was a dramatic story that made world news and further inflated an already vigorous debate. But what about the aftermath? After Tiller looks at the effect of the shooting on the handful of other doctors willing to provide late term abortions. With intimate access to the clinics where they work and the staff who assist them, it explores the day-to-day nature of their work and the ethical and emotional challenges they must confront even without the death threats. “After Tiller is not a strongly partisan film. Its strength lies in its ability to coax out the personalities behind the arguments, and to show us that, at the heart of every such controversy, there are vulnerable human beings.” Jennie Kermode, Eye For Film
