Ry Cooder and Wim Wenders have known each other for decades and worked together on the feature films Paris Texas and The End of Violence. This time Wenders and a small film crew accompanied Cooder to Cuba, to record the members of that old club, musicians who had started out playing in what is now a dilapidated old house in Havana, which once resounded to their fabulous music.

UK/USA.2015. Director: Asif Kapadia. Cast: Amy Winehouse, Mitch Winehouse, Mark Ronson, Tony Bennett, Pete Doherty, Blake Fielder-Civil, Yeslin Bey. Duration: 2hrs.8mins. Cert: 15

A twisted romance in America’s deep south, Buttercup Bill follows mutually obsessed friends struggling to find something like love beneath the wreckage of a broken past. After the suicide of a childhood playmate, Pernilla loiters in the seedy underbelly of New York’s nightlife until she calls on estranged Patrick and arrives on the doorstep of his isolated Louisiana cabin. Shut in there together, surrounded by the peeling walls of Southern religion and the bottle, they re-light what they once had. What is at first innocent and playful gives way to cruel games of sexual jealousy as

AMY

This poignant documentary paints an intimate portrait of Amy Winehouse the troubled singer/songwriter who died in 2011 at the age of just 27. Charting her meteoric rise to fame, the film celebrates Amy’s short yet eventful career, reminding the audience that she was a highly talented artist with a unique voice, as well as tabloid fodder.

“Kapadia lays bare the tragedy of Winehouse’s story. It’s a tough, unfiltered watch but a thoughtful, thorough, feeling one.” Kevin Harley, Total Film “Heartbreaking, moving and emotionally challenging, Amy is one of those rare documentaries that strikes a chord after the credits have finished.” Katie Wong, Sound On Sight

the pair attempt to reconcile a terrible secret that haunts them both. With a breakthrough performance from lead and co-director Remy Bennett, Buttercup Bill is a stylish, provocative and unflinching portrayal of infatuation tarnished with guilt. “A unique kind of cinema: extremely personal, invariably independent, and fiercely imaginative.” Aesthetica Magazine

Czechoslovakia.1968. Director: Eduard Grecner. Cast: Radovan Lukavský, Viliam Polónyi, Emília Vásáryová. Duration: 1hr.22mins. Cert: 15. Language: Slovak, Czech with English subtitles One of the most exciting discoveries in Slovak cinema, Eduard Grecner’s Dragon’s Return is an elemental ballad of love, hatred, revenge and desire. A reclusive potter, Martin Lepi – nicknamed ‘Dragon’ – returns to his isolated community years after being wrongly accused of a crime, punished and shunned by his village. His return immediately engenders an atmosphere of suspicion, fear and simmering violence. Grecner’s hauntingly poetic film is also a revealing account of peasant life in a world isolated from history and the mainstream of socio-political events.

Nominated for 17 Goya awards and winner of 10, including Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Film. “Rodriguez crafts a brilliant, compelling edge-of-your-seat detective thriller infused with a spirit of uncanny gothic redolent of David Lynch and David Fincher.” Maria Delgado, Sight & Sound

WEDNESDAY 9 DECEMBER @ 8PM

CLASSIC FILM: THE PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK USA.1971. Director: Jerry Schatzberg. Cast: Al Pacino, Kitty Winn, Alan Vint, Richard Bright, Kiel Martin. Duration: 1hr.45mins. Cert: 18 Al Pacino’s second movie, and the one that led to his role in The Godfather, was originally banned in the UK because of its stark, raw portrayal of heroin addiction in New York. This hard-hitting drama follows lost soul Helen (Kitty Winn) as she descends into the world of drug addiction. Following an illegal botched abortion, Helen has a chance meeting with petty crook Bobby (Al Pacino). The pair fall in love and soon Helen becomes caught up in Bobby’s world of heroin addiction in Manhattan’s Needle Park. Surrounded by prostitution,

overdoses and the panic of a major drug bust, the young couple must endure the storm of their bleak existence. Kitty Winn received Best Actress Award at 1971 Cannes Film Festival. “A gruelling but highly responsible film about the influence of heroin on a New York street romance.” Time Out

Italy/France.1962. Director: Michelangelo Antonioni. Cast: Alain Delon, Monica Vitti, Francisco Rabal, Mirella Ricciardi, Lilla Brignone. Duration: 2hrs.4mins. Cert: PG. Language: Italian with English subtitles The third in Antonioni’s trilogy of films about the fragility of relationships in the contemporary world, the monochrome L’Eclisse unfolds in early ‘60’s Rome, where a translator Vittoria (Monica Vitta) breaks up with her lover and begins a tentative affair with her mother’s dashing stockbroker Piero (Alain Delon). The plot is minimal: what’s remarkable here is how Antonioni creates and maintains the atmosphere of alienation, and the striking performances from the leading actors. The final shot remains one of the greatest endings in cinema. “Languorous, mysterious and quite fascinating.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian DECEMBER FILMS 13

After nearly four decades together, Ben and George finally tie the knot in an idyllic wedding ceremony in lower Manhattan. But when George loses his job soon after, the couple must sell their apartment and – victims of the relentless New York City real estate market – temporarily live apart until they can find an affordable new home. While George moves in with two cops who live downstairs, Ben lands in Brooklyn with his nephew, his wife, and their teenage son, with whom Ben must share a bunk bed. While struggling with

the pain of separation, Ben and George are further challenged by the intergenerational tensions and capricious family dynamics of their new living arrangements. “The best film of the year.” Vanity Fair “Most of all it’s a film about love – love that’s a little frayed around the edges sometimes but straightforward, funny and true.” Sight & Sound

A kind of baby Belle De Jour, François Ozon’s character study is a detailed, mesmerising slow burn. Played out in four seasonal chapters, the movie follows 17 year-old Isabelle (Marine Vacth) from losing her virginity to a random young German to becoming a techsavvy call girl whose secret life is then exposed in dramatic ways the audience will not see coming. “There is an ephemeral quality to Young & Beautiful that makes it seem as if it’s evaporating as you watch it.” Keith Uhlich, Time Out New York

London Road documents the events of 2006, when the quiet rural town of Ipswich was shattered by the discovery of the bodies of five women. The residents of London Road had struggled for years with frequent soliciting and kerb crawling on their street.
