A TOUCH OF SIN

A Touch of Sin is a bloody, angry protest film offering four loosely connected stories that all show the same thing: one character, pushed to the brink by powers beyond their control, lashing out in a brutal act of violence. This makes each story play out at a slow boil. When a new central character emerges, it’s only a matter of time before the boiling point is reached… Won Best Screenplay award at 2013 Cannes Film Festival. “This ultraviolent attack on Chinese consumerism is a stunning slap in the face from previously sedate director Jia Zhang-ke.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian “A Touch Of Sin is a violent work of brilliance that desperately needs to be seen.” Christopher Clemente, Sound On Sight

ENOUGH SAID

USA.2013 // Director: Nicole Holofcener // Cast: James Gandolfini, Ben Falcone, Catherine Keener, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Toni Collette // Duration: 1hr.31mins // Cert: 12A A divorced and single parent, Eva (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) spends her days enjoying work as a masseuse but dreading her daughter’s impending departure for college. She meets Albert (James Gandolfini) - a sweet, funny and like-minded man also facing an empty nest. As their romance quickly blossoms, Eva befriends Marianne (Catherine Keener), her new massage client. Marianne is a beautiful poet who seems “almost perfect” except for one prominent quality: she rags on her ex-husband way too much. Suddenly, Eva finds herself doubting her own

relationship with Albert as she learns the truth about Marianne’s ex. A sharp, insightful comedy that humorously explores the mess that often comes with getting involved again. “Assured, adult filmmaking from a writer/director who knows her way around the ups and downs of relationships. It’s also a fitting tribute to the talent of the gentle, grizzly Gandolfini.” James Mottram, Total Film

An enchanting movie set in Santiago and centred on Gloria, a free-spirited older woman. Though lonely, she makes the best of her situation and fills her nights seeking love at social dance clubs for single adults. Her fragile happiness changes the day she meets Rodolfo. Their intense passion, to which Gloria gives her all, leaves her vacillating between hope and despair - until she uncovers a new strength and realises that, in her golden years, she can shine brighter than ever. “Not to miss. Paulina García is amazing.” New York Times

SHEPARD & DARK USA.2012 // Director: Treva Wurmfeld // Cast: Johnny Dark, Sam Shepard // Duration: 1hr.32mins // Cert: U The ups and downs of a decades-long friendship are charted with warmth and sensitivity in Shepard & Dark, documentarian Treva Wurmfeld’s intimate portrait of playwright-actor Sam Shepard and his less accomplished friend Johnny Dark. Spanning 18 months, the film follows the long-time friends as they sift through the reams of soul-baring correspondence that have passed between them and ponder how to package the letters in book form. Somewhat taking the place of that unrealised project, Wurmfeld’s film subtly reveals the tensions that emerge between two kindred

spirits with vastly different views of work. Among the film’s gently observed subjects is that of whether a couple’s collective talent for disclosure and reflection inevitably threatens to turn toxic over the long haul. “Treva Wurmfeld’s doc-bio offers not just an intimate perspective on the playwright’s biography but some touching reflections on the comforts and perils of long-term friendship.” John DeFore, The Hollywood Reporter

USA.2013 // Director: John Turturro // Cast: John Turturro, Woody Allen, Sharon Stone, Vanessa Paradis, Live Schreiber, Sofía Vergara // Duration: 1hr.30mins // Cert: 15 “The film’s solemnity is offset by its narrative drive, visual elegance and a terrific central performance by young lead Pauline Etienne.” Jonathan Romney, Screen International

To earn some cash, hard-up ex-bookshop owner Murray (Allen) plays pimp to his friend (Turturro), a florist with a surprising way with the ladies. At the negotiation table are a dermatologist (Stone) and her friend (Vergara), but it’s Vanessa Paradis’ Hasidic widow Avigal who catches his eye.

“The premise is slightly bizarre but there’s enough wink-and-anod charm in the performances to earn it a pass.” Patrick Peters, Empire

But the problems of disillusioned love, early marriage and oppressive male dominance will suddenly be thrown into sharp relief when one of the girls is given a gun. “Smart and sensitive with a screw-you feminist streak… Brilliant.” Cath Clarke, Time Out

TRACKS

Australia.2013 // Director: John Curran // Cast: Mia Wasikowska, Adam Driver, Melanie Zanetti // Duration: 1hr.52mins // Cert: 12A Once meant as a vehicle for Julia Roberts, this outstanding Australian travelogue instead gifts Mia Wasikowska the chance to break away from sullen teenagers and give a moving, womanly, detailed portrayal of a complex soul. Based on her bestselling memoir, this is the true story of Robyn Davidson, who decided to cross 1,700 miles of Australian outback with four camels and her devoted black labrador, Diggity. In 1977, this was an unthinkable journey for a lone young woman. After a somewhat unhappy childhood and a rather unsatisfactory early adulthood in Queensland, Davidson (Wasikowska) craves isolation

and wants to disappear into the vastness of the desert. Her encounters with genial but bemused Aborigines give her expedition a spiritual aura, and the film falls in with Nicholas Roeg’s classic movie Walkabout and, to a degree, Peter Weir’s dreamy evocation of primal nature, Picnic At Hanging Rock. “However familiar the terrain, this is a vivid, heartbreaking and captivating character piece and travel movie in one, guided by an outstanding Wasikowska.” Ian Nathan, Empire

Offbeat and whimsical comedy about a wannabe musician who finds himself out of his depth when he joins an avant-garde rock band led by the enigmatic Frank - a musical genius who hides himself inside a large paper mâché head. Partly inspired by comedian Chris Sievey’s creation, Frank Sidebottom (co-written by Jon Ronson, former member of Sievey’s band), the film delves into the strange world of Frank (Michael Fassbender), an eccentric musical genius, clad in a giant fake head he refuses to take off. Jon (Domhnall Gleeson), an unhappy young man with a passion for music, is our guide through this world, having been invited to play keyboard for Frank’s band, ‘Soronprfbs’, after witnessing the former keyboard player attempt to drown himself. What develops is a beautifully strange, sometimes dark, and always absorbing tale as ambition clashes with creativity. “Frank is a funny film, the band’s 11-month recording stint in Ireland proving a creative maelstrom that’s all maelstrom and little creativity.” Jamie Graham, Total Film

LOCKE

Ivan Locke (Hardy) has worked diligently to craft the life he has envisioned, dedicating himself to the job that he loves and the family he adores. On the eve of the biggest challenge of his career, Ivan receives a phone call that sets in motion a series of events that will unravel his family, job and soul. All taking place over the course of one absolutely riveting car ride, Locke is an exploration of how one decision can lead to the complete collapse of a life. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Steven Knight (Eastern Promises, Dirty Pretty Things) and driven by an unforgettable performance by Tom Hardy, Locke is a thrillingly unique cinematic experience of a man fighting to salvage all that is important to him. “Reverberates with the power of big, universal themes.” Time Out “Tom Hardy as you’ve never seen him before. It defies our notion of what’s cinematic.” Variety

DALLAS BUYERS CLUB USA.2013 // Director: Jean-Marc Vallée // Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, Jared Leto // Duration: 1hr.57mins // Cert: 15 Based on the real-life story of Texas cowboy Ron Woodroof, whose freewheeling life was overturned in 1985 when he was diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live. These were the early days of the AIDS epidemic, and the USA was divided over how to beat the virus. Ron, now ostracised by many of his old friends, and bereft of government-approved effective medicines, decided to take matters in his own hands, tracking down alternative treatments from all over the world. Bypassing the establishment, the entrepreneurial Woodroof joined forces with an unlikely band of renegades and outcasts, who he once would have shunned, and established a hugely successful “buyers’ club”. Their shared struggle for dignity and

acceptance is a uniquely American story of the transformative power of resilience. Won three Oscars®. “A triumph as an actors’ showcase; with McConaughey and Leto giving the performances of their careers.” Matt Glasby, Total Film

Shrek doesn’t care about the holiday season, but Fiona wants a happy Yuletide so he does his best to deliver a warm family Christmas. Of course, this doesn’t go according to plan. Donkey interjects himself into Shrek’s plans and sends things in a totally different direction. While Shrek crafts a quiet evening

with Fiona and their babies, Donkey brings all their pals over for a more raucous festival. “Throws out enough laughs and charm to be worthwhile.” Colin Jacobson, DVD Movie Guide

The story of Eubie the Elf, one of Santa’s helpers whose overly enthusiastic, rose-coloured view of the holiday season is put to the test when he sets out to bring Christmas joy to a dreary town called Bluesville.

Once upon a time, Santa operated with just a small workshop and a few elves. But, as Christmas has grown ever bigger, Santa has been forced to innovate! Now his cleverest elves develop amazing technology, including a hologram to hide the North Pole and a time machine to allow Santa to deliver presents to every home in the world, in just one night. Bernard is an elf who dreams of creating such inventions, but his job is to clean the reindeer stables! Yet when

he creates an amazing Christmas memory machine, his luck might be changing. But Bernard’s invention is broken by a curious elf, causing the North Pole’s power to fail and the hologram hiding it to disappear. Now exposed to the outside world, it is spotted by Santa’s enemy, Nevil Baddington, who is determined to steal Santa’s secrets for himself. The only person who can stop them is Bernard...

“Frothy fun, an animated Christmas treat for the youngsters.” Graham Young, Birmingham Mail “Saving Santa hits all the right notes when it comes to what we want to see in a holiday film, especially an animated musical geared toward the whole family.” Judge Dawn Hunt, DVD Verdict
