WELCOME Foyle Film Festival’s Summer Cinema Programme launches with Victoria – acclaimed writer/director Sebastian Schipper’s heist drama, which was shot in one uninterrupted two and a half hour take on the streets of Berlin. Other highlights include Bayou Maharaja – a documentary exploring the life and music of New Orleans piano legend James Booker, the man Dr John described as “the best black, gay, oneeyed junkie piano genius New Orleans has ever produced.” We showcase the talent of celebrated French actor Vincent Cassel with a short season of his movies – including a special 15th Anniversary screening of Read My Lips. Cassel plays ex-conman Paul who befriends deaf secretary Carla and introduces her to the criminal underworld. Also screening is Cassel’s most recent success – romantic drama Mon Roi and an all-time classic of international cinema La Haine. To celebrate Ken Loach’s second success at Cannes with I, Daniel Blake, we feature a special screening of Versus: The Life And Work Of Ken Loach, an affectionate look at Ken Loach’s career and an insight into the man himself. It features well-chosen clips from his early groundbreaking work for the BBC, including Up the Junction and Cathy Come Home. As part of the Foyle Pride Festival we’re running a week of special screenings, including Mapplethorpe: Look At The

Pictures – the first definitive portrait of the controversial American artist Robert Mapplethorpe since his death from AIDS in 1989. While the complementary documentary Black, White + Gray explores Sam Wagstaff’s transformation from museum curator to Mapplethorpe’s lover and patron. As well as showcasing the best in documentary and contemporary film, the Foyle Film Festival is offering a series of fun and action-packed animated movies and hands-on workshops for our younger audience over the summer holidays. Spend two spellbinding weeks in the company of Harry Potter, wicked witches and wizards. Discover the magic of Disney, create your own animated movie and design your own characters based on The Jungle Book, The BFG, Finding Dory, Big Hero 6, Frozen, and more. Bring LEGO to life by creating your very own short LEGO stop motion film, get to grips with green screen technology, or produce your own comic book story using LEGO. Or maybe you want to be a Jedi warrior – no problem – simply sign up for our Junior or Senior Jedi Film School and make it happen!

BLACK, WHITE + GRAY

USA.2008. Director: James Crump. Cast: Sam Wagstaff, Robert Mapplethorpe, Patti Smith. Duration: 1hr.17mins. Cert: 15 Sam Wagstaff’s transformation from innovative museum curator to Robert Mapplethorpe’s lover and patron is intensively probed in Black, White + Gray. During the heady years of the 1970s and 1980s, the New York City art scene was abuzz with a new spirit, and Mapplethorpe would be at the centre of it. Wagstaff pulled him from his suburban Queens existence, gave him a camera and brought him into an art world that seemed to be waiting for him, creating the man whose infamous images instilled emotions ranging from awe to anger. In turn, Mapplethorpe brought the formerly starched-shirt

preppie to the world of drugs and gay S-and-M sex, well documented in his still-startling photographs. Twenty-five years separated the lovers, but their relationship was symbiotic to its core, and the two remained together forever. Wagstaff’s death from AIDS in 1987, and later Mapplethorpe’s, in 1989, marked the end of an era. Black, White + Gray reveals the powerful influence their collective work continues to have over present-day art and culture.

A family moves into a new neighbourhood, and a 10-yearold named Laure deliberately presents as a boy named Mikhael to the neighborhood children. It is heavily implied that Mikhael is a closeted transgender boy. This film follows his experiences with his newfound friends, his potential love interest, Lisa, his younger sister and his parents. It focuses in on the significance of gender identity in social interaction from an early age, and the difficulties of being transgender and young. “The film is a charm, filled with great moments which will make you laugh and/or well up.” Paul Heath, The Hollywood News

CREATE YOUR OWN LEGO COMIC!

Ever wanted to create a comic book story using your own Lego? Bring along your favourite kit and let us help you! Begin writing your comic by exploring storytelling techniques and camera shot types before producing a detailed shot-by-shot storyboard complete with character and story arcs. Using Comic Life and Do Ink Green Screen on iPad, you will then bring your story to life by taking pictures of your Lego against green screens and inserting backdrops before combining images and words on the comic page.

CREATE 3D IMAGES USING PHOTOSHOP

Participants will learn basic photography skills to take a photograph against a green screen and then create a still 3D image using Photoshop. The images will become 3D when viewed through red and cyan filter glasses (Anaglyph 3D glasses, the ‘original’ 3D glasses). This workshop gives participants the chance to learn the concepts behind creating these eye-popping optical illusions which also apply to more modern approaches to 3D image generation such as VR.
