THE IRISH PUB

VENUE: NERVE CENTRE CINEMA 1 COMPLIMENTARY REFRESHMENTS SERVED

OPENING NIGHT SPECIAL LAUNCH EVENT

The director Alex Fegan will introduce The Irish Pub and take part in a post-screening discussion. The Irish Pub is a eulogy to the greatest institution in Irish society, the pub, or more specifically, the traditional Irish publicans who run them. The characters in this exceptionally endearing film all run and own pubs that have been in their families for generations and it is through their warmth, wit and wisdom that we gain an insight into the heart and soul of the Irish pub. Foyle Film Festival is particularly delighted to screen the new updated version of The Irish Pub that will include coverage of pubs in Northern Ireland (which is absent from the original documentary). Director Alex Fegan explains... “While making The Irish Pub, it was always our intention to film pubs in Northern Ireland. However, I had three criteria while making the film. The pubs had to be at least three generations in the same family, the owners had to stand for the interview… Therefore, if we arrived at a pub and the owner wasn’t there, we couldn’t film the pub. Unfortunately, this happened on many occasions throughout the shoot, including in Galway city, Cork city, Waterford, Kilkenny and unfortunately in Northern Ireland…Then time ran away from us as the film was scheduled to be in cinemas for October 2013… I particularly regretted not filming any pubs in Northern Ireland and so that is why we decided to rectify that.” Fantastic. This is the Ireland that we all know and love.” RTE Ten “Delightful.” The Irish Times “It’s just too hard not to love this film. It’s a lot like being in the sweetest snug ever.” Movies.ie “A moving eulogy to the Irish boozer.” Hotpress Ireland.2013 Director: Alex Fegan Duration: 1hr 12 mins Cert: PG Language: English

ADVANCED STYLE

VENUE: NERVE CENTRE CINEMA 1 Advanced Style explores the lives of seven unique New York women whose eclectic and unique style have fashioned their approach to aging. Based on Ari Seth Cohen’s famed blog of the same name, this film paints intimate and colourful portraits of independent stylish women aged 62 to 95 who are challenging conventional ideas about beauty, aging and Western culture’s increasing obsession with youth. Advanced Style was one of the most talkedabout films at this year’s Hot Docs Film Festival in Toronto. With all the hype that has accompanied the film, it would seem there is a serious push to better represent mature women in the modern fashion era. Ari Cohen’s images are dazzling, but it’s Plioplyte’s filmmaking skill that coaxes out the thoughtful and even painful back stories from these women… A real charmer. Don’t miss it.” MovieFone USA.2014 Director: Lina Plioplyte Cast: Joyce Carpati, Ari Cohen, Lynn Dell, Zelda Kaplan, Jacquie Murdock Duration: 1hr 12 mins Cert: PG

THE INVISIBLE WOMAN VENUE: NERVE CENTRE CINEMA 1 COMPLIMENTARY REFRESHMENTS SERVED Claire Tomalin’s 1990 book about the secret love affair between Charles Dickens, then 45, and young actress Ellen Ternan, then 18, which appears to have been pursued until Dickens’s death 13 years later, is delicate about what we really know about their story. Did they have a child together? We can’t be sure. The scenes of their illicit courtship - whispering secrets to each other, intently staring - are given intensity and eroticism by the use of near-silence long, wordless pauses. What Ellen learns from Dickens is comfortless: “however painful it is, we’re alone - whoever we are with, we are alone”. Nominated for an Oscar®. Ralph Fiennes shows his directorial skills with this adaptation of Claire Tomalin’s biography of Charles Dickens’ secret lover.” The Guardian UK.2013 Director: Ralph Fiennes Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Felicity Jones, Kristin Scott Thomas, Tom Hollander, Joanna Scanlan, Tom Burke Duration: 1hr 51 mins Cert: 12

He set himself on a path which led him to eventuality establish the National Film Archive of India in Pune. Along the way, he travelled around the country saving any prints he became aware of; whether they were Indian or foreign films. When Nair retired in April 1991, he had collected over 12,000 films. Enlisted to solve a brutal murder and threatened by the aspirations of his colleagues, Bruce sets about ensuring their ruin. As he turns his colleagues against one another by stealing their wives and exposing their secrets, he starts to lose himself in a web of deceit that he can no longer control.

STORIES WE TELL VENUE: NERVE CENTRE CINEMA 1 In this inspired, genre-twisting new film, Oscar®-nominated writer/director Sarah Polley discovers that the truth depends on who’s telling it. Polley interviews and interrogates a cast of characters of varying reliability, eliciting refreshingly candid, yet mostly contradictory, answers to the same questions. As each relates their version of the family mythology, present-day recollections shift into nostalgia-tinged glimpses of their mother, who departed too soon, leaving a trail of unanswered questions. Polley unravels the paradoxes to reveal the essence of family: always complicated, warmly messy and fiercely loving. A film that excavates layers of myth and memory to find the elusive truth at the core of a family of storytellers. Winner of the Writers Guild Award. One of the boldest and most exciting films…and the kind of experience that has the power to alter your perception of the world.” The New York Times Canada.2012 Director: Sarah Polley Cast: Michael Polley, John Buchan, Mark Polley Duration: 1hr 48 mins Cert: PG13
