WELCOME DIFFERENT BUT EQUAL Foyle Film Festival’s 12th annual Intercultural & Anti Racism Programme takes place from Monday 13 - Friday 24 March 2017. For over a decade now this important educational event offers primary, post-primary schools, colleges, community groups, and the general public, a programme of international films, workshops and outreach screenings, exploring the themes and issues involved. This annual event is aimed at raising awareness around issues such as racism, discrimination and harassment – including racist bullying. The objectives of this diverse programme are to broaden children’s and young people’s cultural awareness, literacy skills and cine-literacy abilities. The long-term objectives and outcomes of the Intercultural & Anti-Racism Programme are to promote tolerance and inclusion. Highlights of this year’s programme include special screenings of The Lego Batman Movie, Moana, Finding Dory and Sing.
The post-primary programme features two critically acclaimed films based on real life events. Hidden Figures is a celebration of breaking barriers whether it’s the limits imposed by society based on the colour of one’s skin or one’s gender or the limits of our atmosphere. While Loving follows Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple who in 1958 were arrested for violating Virginia’s anti-miscegenation statute by marrying at a time when the Racial Integrity Act of 1924, which prohibited marriage between people classified as ‘white’ and people classified as ‘coloured’, was in place. The Nerve Centre’s Creative Learning Centre team brings the Intercultural & Anti-Racism Programme into schools giving students a unique opportunity to use fun ICT skills in the classroom in order to explore this year’s festival themes. Special public screenings at Brunswick Moviebowl include I Am Not Your Negro, Indignation and Lady MacBeth. Bernie McLaughlin, Director

THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE VENUE: BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL SUITABLE FOR: KEY STAGES 1 & 2 AREAS OF LEARNING: PDMU / WAU / COMMUNICATION / LANGUAGE & LITERACY THEMES: HEROES & VILLAINS / WORKING TOGETHER / RESPONSIBILITY Denmark/USA.2017. Director: Chris McKay. Cast: Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Zack Galifianakis, Rosario Dawson, Ralph Fiennes. Duration: 1hr.45mins. Cert: U. Distributor: Warner Bros Everything is not only awesome but superawesome as the Lego version of DC Comics’ greatest hero (in his opinion) swings into action to save Gotham City from The Joker and his latest army of mega-villains. Again. This time, however, Batman finds his one-man, two-ego operation compromised by a feisty new police commissioner and some orphan kid who is desperate to become his sidekick. Maintaining The Lego Movie standards of energy, anarchy, wit and imagination – whilst poking fun at every sci-fi and fantasy franchise between Mordor and The Matrix – this is another wonderfully constructive exercise.
“The animation is breathtaking and epic in scale. Some of these effects are so good they rival the live-action superhero flicks. Coupled with an intense score from Lorne Balfe, director Chris McKay has crafted a kid’s film that feels like a true blockbuster.” Kat Hughes, The Hollywood News “A great Batman movie, a great superhero movie…” MaryAnn Johanson, flickfilosopher.com

VENUE: BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL SUITABLE FOR: KEY STAGES 3, 4 & SIXTH FORM AREAS OF LEARNING: HISTORY / POLITICS / PDMU / WAU / MATHEMATICS / HUMAN RIGHTS / CITIZENSHIP THEMES: RACISM / DESCRIMINATION / PREJUDICE / WOMEN’S RIGHTS / INJUSTICE / INEQUALITY / AMBITION / TRAVEL & ADVENTURE / SPACE EXPLORATION / HEROISM USA.2016. Director: Theodore Melfi. Cast: Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Mahershala Ali. Duration: 2hrs.7mins. Cert: PG. Distributor: 20TH Century Fox Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer), Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) and Katherine Johnson (Taraji P Henson) faced the double hurdles of being female and African American. Each, however, possessed a mathematical talent that really made her stand out, and in the pre-computer age, that’s something NASA was desperate to find. Brought on board to function as ‘human computers’, sitting in the basement checking sheet after sheet of figures, they were part of the industrial machine behind the making of heroes, the low wages they could command making the project easier to finance. But a woman who knows she’s extraordinary is hard to keep down, and right from the start of Theodore Melfi’s film, we see them celebrating that. Based on actual people and events, Hidden Figures is a celebration of breaking barriers. Whether
it’s the limits imposed by society based on the colour of one’s skin or one’s gender or the limits of our atmosphere. Launching a man into space, orbiting the Earth and bringing him back again was a monumental accomplishment. So were Johnson, Vaughn and Jackson breaking through the plate glass window at NASA? Too often we are shown that history was built by white men, as if everyone else just stood back and watched. Films like Hidden Figures prove that this is not true and that is important. “Showing a considerably more sophisticated understanding of racism than most major American films to tackle the subject, Hidden Figures highlights the pettiness and absurdity of it more effectively precisely by keeping it in the background...” Jennie Kermode, EyeForFilm 15

LOVING
VENUE: BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL SUITABLE FOR: KEY STAGES 3 (YEARS 9 & 10), KS4 & SIXTH FORM AREAS OF LEARNING: HISTORY / POLITICS / PDMU / WAU / HUMAN RIGHTS / GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP THEMES: RACISM / DESCRIMINATION / INTER-RACIAL MARRIAGE / INJUSTICE / PREJUDICE / INEQUALITY / HEROISM UK/USA.2016. Director: Jeff Nichols. Cast: Ruth Negga, Joel Edgerton, Will Dalton. Duration: 2hrs.3mins. Cert: 12A. Distributor: Universal Pictures International (UPI) Based on true events, the film follows Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple who in 1958 were arrested for violating Virginia’s anti-miscegenation statute by marrying in a ceremony conducted outside of their home state in Washington D.C. At that time, the Racial Integrity Act of 1924, which prohibited marriage between people classified as ‘white’ and people classified as ‘coloured’, was in place and the couple were sentenced to prison time. With their one-year sentence suspended for 25 years, the Lovings were forced to either dissolve the marriage or move out of Virigina, not able to return otherwise their sentence would be enforced.
16
Choosing the former, and following a number of years raising their three children in the cityscape of Washington, a situation that neither of them wanted, the two seek legal help to appeal their original conviction and change constitutional law allowing mixed-race couples to marry, and ultimately to allow them to return to their family and the rural home they loved. Nominated for an Oscar® “There are few movies that speak to the American moment as movingly – and with as much idealism – as Jeff Nichols’s Loving…” Manhola Dargis, New York Times

Distributor: Altitude Film Distribution Raoul Peck’s I Am Not Your Negro is the rare movie that might be called a spiritual documentary. It’s a meditation on the prophetic brilliance and the very being of James Baldwin, the African-American writer who was more than a “great thinker” on race – he was the prose-poet of our injustice and inhumanity (and our humanity, too). He saw more than anyone, and he wrote it all down, in essays and novels and plays and poems that were so far ahead of where his society was at that it may only be now, 40 or 50 years later, when he can truly be heard. INDIGNATION VENUE: BRUNSWICK MOVIEBOWL USA/China.2016. Director: James Schamus. Cast: Logan Lerman, Sarah Gadon, Tijuana Ricks. Duration: 1hr.50mins. Cert: 15. Distributor: Vertigo Indignation captures with an uncanny realism a moment of innocence and caution in a post-World War II era, when an oppressive, puritanical conformism dominated white America. Adapted from Philip Roth’s 2008 novel, which was inspired by his college years and set in 1951, it evokes the drabness of a time when living standards were much lower than today; anti-Semitism was pervasive; and the fear of Communism was epidemic. Teenage culture had yet to flower. The early murmurings of rock ’n’ roll were distant stirrings on black R&B radio, and racial segregation held sway. The tone of everyday life was circumspect and grimly proper. “The film is a class act in every department… A warmly satisfying screen translation of a work by an author who has rarely been served well on film.” David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
