HOME OF ST. PATRICK FESTIVAL Armagh is at the heart of celebrating the life of Saint Patrick and the ‘Home of St. Patrick Festival’ promises a lively and varied showcase of the best culture, music and spirituality.

aint Patrick still fascinates as one of the most enduring of all the saints. Renowned for converting Ireland to Christianity centuries ago, his profile remains iconic. It was in Armagh that Patrick began his Christian Mission and established the city as the country’s spiritual capital. The festival will provide an unrivalled mix of regional and international music, theatre, spoken word, art and comedy, showcasing the stunning locations where he walked and worked.
Visitors can enjoy the work of world renowned artists and performers including Kim Haughton, whose ‘Portrait of a Century’ exhibition (12 March-5 May) features throughout the festival and Portuguese Fado singer ‘Carminho’ (15 March). ‘Starry, Starry Night’ (9 March) explores the night sky during the time of Saint Patrick, hosted by the BBC’s Barra Best, and on the eve of Saint Patrick’s day join our Archbishops for two special events including ‘Saint Patrick’s Lecture’ (16 March) and ‘Saint Patrick’s Vigil’ (16 March).

SYMPOSIUM ON MODERN SLAVERY
‘AE’ HISTORICAL WALKING TOUR OF LURGAN

In our 21st century world, the situation of human slavery continues across the world and maintains a life of misery, fear, hopelessness and pain for many millions of people. The BBC’s Karen Patterson will introduce a programme of speakers who will examine the impact of slavery within a modern context. Light refreshments will be served. This event is organised in association with the Policing & Community Safety Partnership.
Join local historians Jim Conway and David Weir for this guided walking tour of sites connected with the Lurgan born artist, journalist and poet George Russell (AE). Along the way we’ll discover the inspiration behind the spiritual subjects that comprise much of AE’s work. The walk will last approximately 1 hour. STARRY STARRY NIGHT 9 March // 7.30pm - 9.30pm £10 | £5 Children // Navan Centre & Fort Join us for a unique experience learning about the mysteries and wonders of the night sky. Observe the stars with expert astronomers from Armagh Observatory and Planetarium and discover the importance of the night sky during the time of St. Patrick. Hosted by BBC Weather presenter Barra Best, attendees will have the opportunity to see the sky through telescopes. During the evening the Eye in the Sky - Aerial Photos of Northern Ireland from the 1920’s Exhibition provided by Armagh County Museum will be on display. 3/4 VisitArmagh.com
CELEBRATE SAINT PATRICK 10 March // 8.00pm // £5 // St. Patrick’s RC Cathedral Join composer and presenter John Anderson as he conducts a reflective and celebratory event honouring Saint Patrick. Set in the magnificent St. Patrick’s RC Cathedral, choirs from all over this island and further afield join together in a unique evening of music and spoken word. A limited number of audience places available. Please note that these seats may have restricted views and that this event may be recorded for future broadcast and marketing purposes.

‘PORTRAIT OF A CENTURY’ EXHIBITION 12 March - 5 May // Normal opening hours // The Market Place Theatre Gallery & Foyer Walls Kim Haughton’s Portrait of a Century, is a visual time capsule made up of people who are threaded together through a shared language, culture and nationhood. Each image in the series represents the birth year of the sitter and spans a hundred-year time-period from 1916 to 2015. Kim completed her MA at London University of Arts and was named as an Irish photographer to watch in 2015 by TIME magazine.

The beautiful setting of St. Patrick’s CoI Cathedral will be the backdrop for this unique opportunity to witness Portugal’s foremost proponent of its traditional music. Carminho has performed in capitals across the world including a recent sell-out performance in London’s Barbican Centre.

SAINT PATRICK’S LECTURE 16 March // 11.00am // The Market Place Theatre Auditorium On the eve of Saint Patrick’s Day, the Primates of the two principal Churches, Archbishop Richard Clarke and Archbishop Eamon Martin, will speak about what Saint Patrick means to them in a modern world and examine how Saint Patrick’s words still resonate for many of the challenges we face today.

Drums from Asia, the Middle-East, Africa, Latin and North America, Europe and our own island’s traditional percussive sounds will feature together in a show curated by percussionist Mark Wilson to celebrate the diverse rhythms of life.

Join the Archbishops of Armagh on the Eve of our patron saint’s day. Meet at St. Patrick’s CoI Cathedral where Archbishop Richard Clarke will lead you in prayer. He will then guide the congregation via torchlight to St. Patrick’s RC Cathedral where you will be welcomed by Archbishop Eamon Martin. This symbolic expression of the unity of the Churches is a reflection of St. Patrick’s own journey of uniting the people with Christianity. Light refreshments will be served.
SUNRISE WITH PATRICK 17 March // 5.30am £5.00 (Children are free) // Navan Centre & Fort Celebrate the first light of Saint Patrick’s morning with the ancient people of Ulster and through the bursts of sunlight cast an eye back to what life and faith may have been like before the arrival of Saint Patrick and Christianity. This event will feature song, story and breakfast for all attendees. As parts of this event will take place outside, please dress accordingly.

SAINT PATRICK’S CALL OF DAY PROCESSION THE CELTS 17 March // 1.30pm // Departs Palace Demesne Celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day in Armagh with a spectacular display of colour, music, dance and entertainment for all to enjoy as our wonderful procession snakes it way through the city centre. The procession route runs from the Palace Demesne, Irish Street, Ogle Street, Thomas Street, Market Street, Market Street to English Street, onto Cathedral Road, past the Shambles Yard before finishing at the grounds of Cathedral Road Recreation Centre.
