higher education The Nerve Centre is an award winning multi media arts centre that is engaged in providing access to facilities, training, education, exhibition and production for many young and unemployed people in Derry and Northern Ireland. The Nerve Centre was established in 1990 as a focal point for youth culture in Derry, Northern Ireland's second city. By bringing popular music, film, video, animation and interactive multimedia together under one roof, the Nerve Centre promotes creative collaboration and fusion between artists and provides a cultural outlet for many young people who feel excluded from what is traditionally regarded as the "arts sector".

Skills Development & Innovation The Nerve Centre has provided full time training opportunities to over 900 individuals as part of its training programmes at the centre over the past 20 years. Price Waterhouse evaluated our training and confirmed a 70% success rate with 70% of completers moving to employment or further education as a direct result of the training. Furthermore, the Nerve Centre has combined production through films such as the Oscar nominated ‘Dance Lexie Dance’ and others to provide valuable work experience for the trainees. There are a number of individual success stories with at least trainees setting up their own businesses over the years. Furthermore, over 50% of the current staff are former trainees of the Nerve Centre having come through full time courses at the centre.

Current Courses The Nerve Centre’s annual full-time vocational courses continue to attract students from all over Ireland and beyond. The courses are tutored by industry professionals who bring their practical experience of studio engineering, live performance, recording, songwriting, festival and television production into the classroom through lessons, tutorials and seminars. All of our full-time courses are NVQ - Level 3 OCN Awards for Progression, have a duration of one year and are run in partnership with South West College. As a result of completing our courses, successful students have the opportunity to advance to third level education and into a career in the creative industries.

A comprehensive, hands on approach is at the heart of this music rich course, with units in song-writing, digital music composition, mixing and live sound. You will have opportunities to work as a member of the Nerve Centre production crew and by the conclusion of the course shall be self-sufficient in many areas of music production, arrangement and sequencing thereby enabling you to take control of your creative output.

Diploma In Video Techniques This course gives the student an overall understanding of the production process and techniques, not only for video work, but also for many other areas of the media industry. The course is of particular interest to those looking for a low level entry into the industry, but will be equally useful for potential media degree students and community workers wanting to get professional results. Opportunities exist for learners to progress onto relevant Higher Education courses.

Music Production This course is designed to provide students with a wide array of skills associated with the theory and process of making and recording music in the modern digital studio. Students will be introduced to the key concepts of programming, recording, mixing and mastering music and audio in various genres through a series of detailed exercises and practical projects. There is a strong emphasis on the creative adaptation of standard techniques and the development of personal practice.

Creative Technology All of the units in this course are primarily geared towards giving students a good working knowledge of industry standard software/ hardware, procedures and their application.
