Poster Makers: Illustration & Design Programme

Young Poster-makers share their hopes for the future A group of 16 talented illustrators, aged 8-13, joined the PRONI team at the Black Box for a three-day Poster Making programme in July. Participants took part in hands-on illustration and design workshops with Illustrator and Youtuber John D. Ruddy and learnt about colouring, logo-making and composition. Inspired by PRONI’s poster collections, each participant was tasked to create their own poster with a message for the future. Their outstanding creations will be archived and preserved by PRONI and made accessible to future generations.

Meet the Young Artists

Adithya Venugopal I am 11 and I like drawing, painting, sketching and crafting. I use a pencil to draw the rough sketch, then I use an outlining pen to give a bold border and I colour it in afterwards.

My name is Ananyaa and I’m 12 years old. My poster is about how the world is now and what I want the world be in the future. I want Belfast to be a complete sustainable city.

Ananyaa Rahate

Caroline McDaid

Hello my name is Caroline. I love swimming and skateboarding and also playing games with my friends. My favourite colours are green and orange. I am 9 years old and after Summer I am going into P6. It’s 21st of July 2021.

Devank Chawla

I am 11 and I like Fortnite, GTA and etc and I play them on my PS5. I like pizza, pasta and a lot more stuff. I also have a baby sister.

Farrah Moyna Carson

My name is Farrah and I am age 9. My school is Forth River PS. The sports I go to: hip hop dancing, acro and gymnastics. The reason why I drew my LGBTQ+ poster is because people bully others for being gay and other, but people can be who they want and not be bullied. I drew the Earth poster because people are littering and are not respecting their planet. I made the ‘Be Yourself’ picture because people change to impress others.

Fionnan McGeown

I am 12 from Lurgan. I like cycling and swimming, learning to speak French and Irish. I love playing video games, I play on PS4 (yes, I’m old. Give it a break Gen Z with your Ps10s). I also play the piano, bodhrán (Irish drums) and a bit of electric guitar. I absolutely HATE modern music. (To you in the future, it’s music from 2017-2021 and onwards. Hopefully your music right now isn’t horrible). Instead, I’m more into 1960s-1990s rock ’n’ roll and country and jazz (hopefully it actually still exists in your time. If you’ve ever heard of it). My favourite bands are ACDC (doubt you’ve ever heard of them) and Queen (you’re probably thinking “what’s he talking about” or whatever language you Gen Z speak) About the poster: in the past, Ireland had 4 provinces, Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connaght. Then England came along and STOLE Ulster which was in the North. England called Ulster Northern Ireland. England also left a bit behind, called Derry. England also got Scotland and Wales and made the UK (United Kingdom). In the picture, Ulster wants to join the party, but England won’t let him. Also, ‘craic’ is Irish for ‘fun’. The party happening got started by the provinces I told you earlier and Europe. Since Brexit happened (ask your parents) that’s why the UK isn’t there. Moral of the poster: Ulster wants to be back with the other provinces, to be a united Ireland, but England won’t let him because England isn’t very nice to Ireland. AT ALL. Same goes with Scotland and Wales. I hope in your time, Ulster will reunite with the other provinces and be a United Ireland again. This made me realise just how dangerous bonfires really are so I made my poster to protest against bonfires because nothing good comes from a burning pile of wood.

Kiyaan Saxena

I am 8 and I am from India. I know how to make a Rubik’s cube and ride a wake board.

Konrad O’Neill

My name is Konrad. I am 12 years old. I live in a neighbourhood called Madison Avenue. I have made this poster about climate change. I have drawn a puppet from an ad and a dark Earth. I have got the whole idea from my head.

Kavinilaa Senthil

My name is Kavinilaa. I am 9. I do a type of Indian dance. I go to football class. My posters said Impossible, Whatever you believe and Treat people the way you

Nevaan Bhosale

My name is Nevaan and I am 7 years 11 months old. I made two posters: one of my posters was ‘Impossible is Possible’. I like to play football.

Shaheen Mohammed

Hello! I am 13 years old and on year 10. I am really excited to share what theme I picked for my poster. Love Yourself: Through this poster I wanna say ‘Love Yourself’, accept who you are. Loving yourself is the start to true love and at the end of the day it’s you and only you. The only one that’s gonna stay with you. Just be you, the world will adjust.

Rosheen Ann Thomas

Hi, my name is Rosheen. I was born on 8/7/12. I have a big brother. My best friend is Meghana. This poster making is really fun. Bye!

Iona Monahan

I am 9 and I love animals, the sea and singing/acting. I made my poster about pride rights because some people think that the gender you like should be used against you. My favourite colours are green, purple and orange.

Meghana Bogaraju

My name is Meghana. I am 11 years old. I was born in India. I love music, art and any outdoor sport. I really enjoyed making posters because it gives other people a sense of comfort and warmth. My best friend is Rosheen.

Finn McDaid

My name is Finn, I am 11 and I love to cook, bake, draw and paint. My poster was based on a video my mum showed me of a lit bonfire falling down right beside some people. It didn’t fall onto anyone but if it had fallen several meters to the left people could have died.

Rihanna Mohamme

My name is Rihanna Mohammed. I’m 9 years old. I am in P5 but it’s summer holidays so I’m in P6. I love music so much. I love drawing and painting. Save the Earth: we are cutting wood, tree and more and we won’t get any oxygen. The earth will lose the beauty. The world might end. Impossible: Every thing is possible, nothing is impossible. Take away the ‘im’ in impossible. We are all equal: No one should be treated wrong. We are all the same.
