Ulster Folk & Transport Museum Creative Arts and Crafts Programme 2015_2016
Get Creative at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum Adult Craft Programme 2015 – 2016 Inspired by the seasons of the year, as well as the collections at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, the Learning Department provides a range of adult classes to encourage creativity. The Museum is uniquely placed to have historical evidence of crafts such as whitework embroidery from the 1800s, fine examples of rag rugs used in family homes during the 1900s and samples of goldwork embroidery all available at our classes. New this year, we offer Bladesmithing classes where participants make a whittling knife in the Museum’s Spade Mill and finishing room, a handmade paper workshop, felt jewellery and handbag classes and seasonal tours looking at local customs. As part of the Decade of Centenaries events, we are featuring a World War 1 themed weekend to coincide with Remembrance Sunday and classes looking at the Suffragette cause and the changing role of women.
The ever popular basket-making and blacksmith workshops are still available. The Museum is delighted that both tutors have received recognition for their work. Gerald Monaghan qualified as a Journeyman from the London City of Blacksmiths Guild while Bob Johnston was awarded the 2015 MADE, Spacecraft, and People’s Prize Award for his willow sculptural pieces. We have some new initiatives in January 2016: the Get Creative Weekend and Crafternoon Tea. Crafters can enjoy a weekend of traditional craft taster sessions with like-minded people who love to try new areas of craft. Alternatively, if you only have a short amount of time come to our afternoon of tea, chat and crafting. Whatever level you decide to participate at, you will go home with a product created by your own hand which had its origins centuries ago.
