Counselling

Foundation Degree in Psychodynamic Counselling

Psychodynamic counselling is based on the belief that the past influences the present in ways that we are not always aware of. A psychodynamic counsellor will strive to help clients recognise the possible source of some of their issues e.g. unhelpful relationship patterns.

This two-year Foundation Degree qualifies you to practice in a public practice and you will also be equipped to open your own private practice.

The course will provide you with the necessary training in skills and theory to meet the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy requirements in those areas to accredit individual counsellors. It would then be your responsibility to seek individual accreditation.

The course is psychodynamic in orientation with some consideration of the humanistic approach. To qualify you must have already completed a Level 3 Counselling course.

BA (Hons) Counselling Studies (Top-Up)

The programme enables students to deepen their understanding of Counselling theory and practice.

The programme is designed to enable individual participants who have no first degree to gain a BA (Hons) in Counselling Studies. Counselling as a discipline is broad and continues to grow in reputation and in importance to diverse range of roles: education administration, community development, health and social care, early years practitioners, human resources and the voluntary sector. For its scope, the programme draws on educational aspects of Psychology, Sociology and Philosophy to give students the appreciation of counselling as a field of study.

It is expected that students are practising counsellors or have relevant recent experience such as working in related professions.

This course leads to a BA (Hons) Degree and enables progression on to Masters level. It does not give you qualified counsellor status.

I find the teaching really stays with me on this course, I think this is because the tutors relate the theories to real-life examples and encourage us to bring our own experience in. The group is very dynamic as well, we all do our professional practice in different settings. The support from the class is important as the nature of the course can take a lot out of you, but it is also extremely rewarding.

Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together. In the UK Osteopathy is an allied healthcare profession regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC).

Once you have qualified with our B.Ost or M.Ost degrees you are able to apply for registration with the GOsC and then practice as an osteopath. You can then work as an osteopath in a clinic, the NHS or set up your own practice (we also teach you the practicalities of running your own business). Osteopaths work all over the world including Europe, New Zealand and Australia.

Our students rate us particularly highly for our experienced teaching staff, small class sizes, excellent pastoral care and modern clinic facilities.

Our onsite teaching clinic has more than 3000 patient appointments per year and it is staffed by highly-qualified tutors who supervise the students in assessing and treating patients. In our clinic our students encounter patients of all ages and lifestyles as well as getting the opportunity to work in specialist areas such as paediatrics and sports injuries.

Our Osteopathy students are a mix of younger and mature students, with many of the latter having come to Osteopathy as a career change later in life.

We also offer access courses for potential applicants who have a real interest but lack the required academic qualifications.

Higher Apprenticeships

Higher Apprenticeships provide a different route to gain Level 4 qualifications or above, with most apprentices gaining an NVQ Level 4, HND, or a foundation degree. Training fees are paid by the government and the employer, so there is no requirement for a student loan for fees.

A Higher Apprenticeship can take from one to five years to complete, and it involves part-time study at an institution like Nescot. The main appeal of an apprenticeship is that you are working whilst you are studying.

This provides you with both an income and real-life experience in your chosen profession.

Apprenticeships are designed with employer and industry needs in mind hence they are very relevant to the job you’ll be doing. An apprenticeship also gives you a head start in employment as government figures say that 90% of apprentices in England stay on in employment, 71% of them with the same employer.

Our dedicated Business Centre team can help you whether you have an employer or not. We maintain strong links with industry and can help you seek a suitable employer. Our current vacancies can be seen at www.nescot.ac.uk/ apprenticeshipvacancies. Mature Students

Over50% of students enrolling on our Higher Education courses are mature students (23+). Whether you’re starting a new career, changing jobs or adding to your professional qualifications, we work hard to help you balance your studies with your other commitments so that you reach your full potential.

A ‘full-time’ course doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be in college five days a week. Timetables vary between courses, but we aim to schedule classes, tutorials, lectures and assessments in a way that helps you manage your time efficiently. In some cases we’re also able to be flexible with our entry requirements, for example accepting substantial work experience in lieu of some academic qualifications.

If you’re balancing your studies with caring for young children you could make use of our on-site nursery, Nestots, which cares for children aged up to five.

Epsom and Ewell

We think our borough is a great place to study. It’s also a great place to make your home, and to start or develop your career.

Epsom and Ewell has something for everyone, and was ranked as the 2nd happiest place to live in Surrey in 2021. Epsom is a lively town with a shopping centre, restaurants, bars, pubs, nightclubs and a theatre, while Ewell is a quiet and picturesque village. The borough has plenty of green open spaces, from the compact and historic Bourne Hall in Ewell to the 250-acre Nonsuch Park on the borough’s borders.

Epsom is also host to the famous Derby, billed as the world’s greatest flat race, which has been a fixture of the horse racing calendar since the inaugural race in 1780. The two-day racing festival of The Oaks and The Derby attracts over 150,000 people to the racecourse. There’s also a popular summer programme of affordable evening racing and music and, even when there isn’t any racing, the Downs are a beautiful open space to walk, ride and picnic.

Although we’re in a ‘village’ setting we also have modern amenities within walking distance including a hypermarket, cafes, pubs and retail outlets. Central London is only forty minutes by direct train from nearby Ewell East station.

Other towns and boroughs like Guildford, Wimbledon and Croydon are also easily accessed from both of our nearby train stations.

Surrey is also a very safe part of the country. Out of the 43 policing areas in England and Wales, Surrey has the fourth lowest rate of crime per 1,000 population (2021). In Epsom and Ewell especially there is a strong sense of community and security with many local residents’ associations and neighbourhood groups.

We think you’ll like it round here, by all means join us at one of our many open events and have a look around the area.
