follow your bliss! Tuning in to ourselves and asking what is required is nurturing on every level and helps us be more present with others, productive at work and also nurtures the community... We are the ‘one’ we have been waiting for but have you noticed the ease that comes from reaching out to others and remembering who we really are by connecting? The month of May was massive!! Great to see so many of you at Dr Dain Heer’s Being You Changing the World event, The Conscious Life Festival, David Wolfe’s talk in Brisbane and the Heal YourSelf Expo. Look forward to meeting more of you in June! Who’s on the cover: It’s super inspiring, holistic wellness coach, blogger and speaker Melissa Ambrosini. Read all about Melissa’s journey and helpful tips on page 14-15.
O
ne of the things I really love about the cooler months is the extra ‘snuggley’ nurturing time!! Winter just seems to go hand in hand with having a warm cup of chai, a lovingly made, nourishing meal or treating yourself to a relaxing massage (or modality of choice). Oh and those sunny winter days.....bliss! This month our writers discuss all aspects of nurturing mind, body and soul in simple yet ‘earthy’ ways. And as always there are many incredible people included in this magazine that not only share their inspiring experiences but are available to facilitate and support. What if we put nurturing time top of the list rather than seeing it as a luxury or selfish, and what if it became part of our daily practice?

Baharat
A
A hearty recipe for a wholesome winter
By Vicki Taylor, Queen of Spice
n exotic spice blend from the Middle East, Baharat simply means ‘spice’ in Arabic and is used in the same way that Garam Masala is used in India, i.e. on just about anything. It is a lovely blend of spices and is not hot, so is great for the whole family. In my blend the predominant spice or the base spice I start with is paprika, followed by the usual suspects of coriander and cumin, some cassia or cinnamon, some black pepper and sprinkles of cardamom, cloves and nutmeg. Baharat marries really well with lamb and can be used in casseroles and tagines or it can simply be dusted on meat, left to marinade for an hour, grilled on the BBQ and served with a fresh crisp salad. This is one of my all time favourite quick dinners. Chicken can also be used, and fish, but use sparingly. For something different, try adding to savoury scones. YUM! www.redhotchillipepper.com.au

uring winter we often become less physically active. We tend to stay home and often eat more. We could feel glum and put on weight or we could take advantage of winter and make it the time for revitalizing and reinventing ourselves! Instead of spending winter under the doona eating cake (though there should definitely be some of that too) spend this winter nurturing yourself;
Nourish your body with wholesome, hearty foods. Eats lots of ginger and garlic to combat winter bugs. Incorporate coconut oil to stop your skin drying out in the cold. Experiment with delicious, healing herbal teas. Eat less wheat, meat and dairy and more raw fruit and vegetables. Winter is a great time to practice yoga and meditation has amazing results that will have you feeling healthy and happy even when the sky outside is grey. These chilly times are great for undertaking a home study course. You could blossom into spring with a healthy body, relaxed mind, peaceful spirit and maybe even a new career! “Warm your Soul this Winter”
By Cath Manuel
W
ith the arrival of winter, I enjoy hours in the glorious sunshine nurturing my garden. The feel of the warm sunshine is wonderful on our skin this time of year and also our gardens enjoy the break from the long hot days of summer. One thing I love about a change in season is planting the next crop of delicious, organic veggies. Coming into winter I’ll grow broccoli, kale, cabbages, cauliflower, Asian greens, celery, beans, peas and snow peas. Garlic and potatoes are also growing now, and I’m looking forward to harvesting these!!! I also
find assorted lettuce and herbs handy to plant throughout the garden beds to add colour to gardens and great flavours to our meals. Another of my favourite things in the cool season is to enjoy warming foods containing all our home-grown produce. I love harvesting a big bowl of veggies, herbs and extra flavours like Kaffir lime leaves and fresh lemons or limes. When making garden fresh soups the flavours of the harvest are all that’s needed to create delicious, healthy, quick and cheap meals. Fabulous for busy families!!

The Happy Berry... For you to get more out of life By Warren Stewart, Ph.D. – Research Nutritionist
FOOD FOR THE SOUL
N
icknamed the “happy berry”, or goji, consumers find that when they consume them they feel a sense of wellbeing. This makes you smile right? While it is the case that goji berries are indeed a superfood providing a huge array of essential nutrients, they do indeed contain one of the highest densities of antioxidants. Antioxidants are the key nutrients that protect your cells from damaging particles, called free radicals. And, it is free radicals that are in the air we breathe, food we eat and metabolize – that break off the vital cell control molecules, the chromosomes, leaching to cell dysfunction, including cancer. Free radicals upset cell membrane function, so
your cells don’t “absorb and excrete correctly”. Now the truth is that we need about 9,000 ORAC units of antioxidants per day, to not suffer such cell damager or alternatively to get this we need to eat 15 carrots. Unreal eh! But, only a mere 10grams of dried goji berries gives you over twice the ORAC units you need. Just to be clear on how powerful this is, a serve of fresh strawberries is about 5% of this. So how do you feel – smiling now, knowing full well that goji berries can provide powerful nutritional benefits to protect essential life cell processes, so you can get more out of life and be happy? But there is way more – after merely taking gojis the function of your blood radically changes over just seven days. Typically red blood cells clump together but after just seven days on gojis they are seen to separate. This means they can carry more oxygen, and that means more energy. Also, uric acid crystals disappear. White blood cells are seen to become active and like “pacmen” they are seen to now “gobble up” bad bacteria/molds – go
to functionalfoodsblog.com and see, this is powerful stuff.. So why would goji berries be so powerful nutritionally?…Yes, they certainly contain lots of Beta Carotene for “the eyes”, many minerals, essential amino acids…But they also contain 31% by weight of long chain molecules called polysaccharides. These actually change the gut function – they are digestible by some bacteria, they bind to bile acids and…once fermented in the colon produce essential fatty acids…so your gut function is enhanced – with better absorption. So why wouldn’t you want to add goji berries to your diet? Morlife make it easy by including them in their muesli…so this ensures you get a good “whack” of antioxidants. They are also coated in dark chocolate, chocolate coated gojis so this becomes a very functional and good snack. The proof of course is in the eating – challenge yourself for say, 30 days and prove you can have the “happy” from the berry.

Sacredness Food A
The
of
By Julie Shelton
few years ago I was fortunate to be awarded a Fellowship by the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust in Australia. As an organic farmer and local food advocate, it presented a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to research how other countries support small-scale and artisanal food production. One of the last engagements on my Fellowship itinerary was to join the Australian delegation to Terra Madre, the international Slow Food gathering held bi-annually in Turin, Italy. The year I participated, Terra Madre brought together over 7000 delegates from 153 countries. The final session of Terra Madre addressed the spirituality of food production and consumption. Carlo Petrini, the founder of Slow Food International, joined Enzo Bianchi, the prior of an Italian monastic community, and Satish Kumar, disciple of Gandhi and editor of Resurgence magazine. Following their wonderful
discussion on the concept of ‘sacred’, it was agreed that our loss of respect for where food has come from and for those who have grown, processed and prepared it, has meant that eating for many is now merely an act of ingesting fuel. “Why do monks pray before meals?” Bianchi asked rhetorically. “Not so much to give thanks, but to emphasise the sacredness of the moment. We are accustomed to eating in silence but our meals are a masterpiece of communication.” Bianchi went on to explain why we ‘clink’ our glasses of wine before drinking. The origin of this act was not, he asserted, to join in wishing the other good health. It was, rather, to complete the stimulation of the senses to ensure a fully present and respectful experience. He explained that when we bring a glass of wine to our mouths, we first look at it and admire the colour, viscosity and clarity. We then bring it closer and the fumes fill our nasal passages, exciting our memories of
fruits and spices. As the first sip touches our tongue, we relish the sensation of the cool glass against our lips, the temperature of the wine and the feeling of it passing over our tongue, washing against our gums and bathing our palate. We then taste the wine and savour the initial flavour, marvelling as it changes over time, and finally swallow. The only sense thus not stimulated is hearing (especially for monks eating in silence). And so a ‘clink’ of glasses awakens our ears and signals that a sacred act is about to be committed and to encourage us to be fully present, grateful, respectful and convivial. I’m excited to announce that this year at the Real Food Festival, to be held on the 7th & 8th of September in Maleny, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, I will host a discussion on food and spirituality. Please come along and rediscover the sacredness of being at the table and sharing food together.

Coconut Lemon Chicken Soup (Thermomix version)
Method: 2. Add, and cook for 10 minutes, 100 degrees, speed 1, or until starting to boil: • 1000g home-made chicken broth 3. Add remaining ingredients, and cook 10 minutes, 100 degrees, speed 1: • 1 tin coconut cream or milk • juice of 1 lemon • 2 tsp Rapadura • a few good splashes of f sh sauce • sea salt to taste Ingredients: 1. Chop in TMX for 5 seconds speed 7, until f nely chopped: • 1 inch fresh ginger • ½ inch fresh turmeric • 1 large clove garlic • fresh coriander or cilantro (to taste) • a few fresh chives or shallots • a piece of fresh red chilli (to taste) [Note: For extra goodness and ‘zing’, double the amount of ginger, turmeric, garlic, coriander and chilli (opt). After whizzing it up, remove half to a bowl, then add it back into the soup after it’s finished cooking. That way you’ll get the benefit of the raw enzymes, not to mention more flavour!]
4. Add in the 200-300g cooked chicken reserved from making the broth. Cook for another 2 minutes at 100C, reverse speed soft. Then add in the extra minced herbs, garlic, ginger, etc if using. 5. Pour into bowls, and garnish with fresh cilantro or shallots. This recipe has been contributed by Quirky Cooking. For more information please visit: www.quirkycooking.blogspot.com.au

Burmese inspired tomato and tofu curry By Trish Davison
T
his is an adaptation of an egg curry recipe that my mother would cook us in Lenten times. During Easter time as a family and household we always abstained from meat every Friday. However, not so long ago after doing a detox, I decided to adapt this to include tofu instead of the eggs. Needless to say this curry works equally well with boiled eggs if you are a vegetarian and looking for another alternative. Ingredients: 120ml Coconut Oil 1 large Onion 2 cloves Garlic 2cm fresh Green Ginger ½ tsp Turmeric 1 heaped teaspoon Hot Paprika (Can use sweet if you don’t like it spicy) ½ tsp Garam Masala 1 bay leaf ½ tsp Brown Mustard Seeds 1 handful fresh chopped Coriander 4 Ripe but f rm diced Tomatoes (Vine ripened impart a far better taste) 1 packet Tofu 100ml Water 2 tablespoons Fish Sauce (Can omit
for vegetarians) Himalayan Salt to taste Cracked Black Pepper Method: Using a pestle and mortar, pound the onion garlic and ginger into a chunky paste. You can use a small food processor but this curry is meant to have texture so do not puree the ingredients too heavily if using a food processor. Heat the oil in a heavy based pan. Add the mustard seed and fry till you can hear them starting to make a popping sound. Add the onion, garlic and ginger and fry till fragrant. Don’t rush this step, lower the heat and add a dash of water if necessary. Add the turmeric, paprika and continue to stir though till all the onion mixture is evenly combined and even colour is dispersed thoughout the mix. Add the garam masala and f sh sauce and combine immediately the diced tomato and let simmer for a further 5-10 minutes. Add a dash more water and the bay leaf and cover for a minute or
FOOD FOR THE SOUL two. Add the tofu and toss the tofu into the curry mixture so it evenly covered. Bring back to a slow boil and simmer for 15 minutes uncovered but do not let the tofu break apart too much. Add salt and pepper to taste. Toss the fresh coriander in at the last minute before serving in a large open plate and sprinkle a little more coriander on for garnish, with some crispy fried garlic and crispy shallots for texture. Serve with f aky roti, chappatis or just a green salad and a big bowl of dahl lentils and any one of our chilli condiments. A great winter warmer dish to soothe and nourish the soul that is full of protein but meat free.

Spinach, Kale and Broccoli Cheesey Scrambled Eggs Chilly winter mornings are a perfect time for delicious hot cooked breakfasts. This recipe is simple yet delicious and great if you grow your own spinach and kale. An exciting twist on a family favourite.
FOOD FOR THE SOUL
Recipe and photography by Author Rebecca Mugridge
Ingredients: 6 free range eggs ½ cup milk or soy milk ½ cup raw broccoli, very f nely chopped ¼ cup kale, very f nally chopped ½ cup baby spinach leaves, very f nely chopped 1 spring onion, thinly sliced (optional) ½ cup low fat cheese, grated 1 tsp mixed dried herbs 1 tsp chopped fresh chives ½ tsp turmeric Himalayan salt and fresh cracked black pepper to taste Method: Prepare all ingredients and heat a small amount of olive oil in a good sized frying pan to a medium heat. Lightly whisk eggs and milk. Lightly fry the broccoli, kale, spring onion and spinach for around 2 minutes.
Add the egg mixture into the frying pan with the broccoli mix, keep on a medium heat stirring occasionally, do not leave. When nearly cooked add in the cheese, gently mixing through. Season to taste. Serve Immediately. Notes: Great served with sour dough, spelt or pita bread. Add fresh colour to the plate like sliced or cherry tomatoes, fresh cucumber, coriander and parsley leaves. For a more adult version add some fresh hot chilli, also great for the metabolism! Allow to completely cool and use as a sandwich f lling. Keep refrigerated. Kale is a green leafy vegetable considered to be one of the highest
in nutrients with many health benef ts including it is said, to have anti – cancer effects so it is well worth tracking down or growing your own. It is very easy to grow and is an attractive green leafy plant; simply sew seed straight into prepared garden beds with good drainage, in the full sun as you would cabbage. It is a quick crop making it a great vegetable to grow with kids and even on sunny balconies. It is pretty hardy and not too bad with garden pests. There are many varieties available and it is also excellent in juicing and often made into kale “chips”. www.authorrebeccamugridge.com and follow her on Facebook at Author Rebecca Mugridge.

Mind, Body and Soul INTERVIEW WITH MELISSA AMBROSINI, WELL KNOWN HOLISTIC NUTRITIONIST, COACH, AWARD WINNING BLOGGER AND SPEAKER FROM SYDNEY. Vanessa: How did you find yourself in the world of holistic wellness? Have you always been health conscious? Melissa: I come from a very active family so, yes, I have always been into health and fitness. But, my idea of health was: low fat cheese, frozen Lean Cuisine meals, and slogging it out at the gym for fifty minutes on the treadmill every day. I really had no idea, until I was served a massive wake up call. Over three years ago, I landed in hospital with a serious case of the cold sore virus. I had cold sores covering my face, in my mouth, and down my throat. I couldn’t eat, drink, or talk. I was on a drip for over a week. On 14
14.indd 1
top of that, I had adrenal fatigue, thyroid problems, high levels of mercury, serious PMT, depression, loads of mineral deficiencies, adult acne and eczema just to top it all off. I believe that I created all of that. As I lay there in hospital, I had this realisation: If I had gotten myself here, I could get myself out. The doctor came into my room. He plonked a tray of medication in front of me and said I had to take it all for a minimum of a year. I knew that wasn’t good enough for me. And that’s when my research into holistic health and well-being began. I then went on to study holistic nutrition. Vanessa: What changes have you seen
in your own life from adopting a healthy way of living on all levels? What challenges have you met with along the way and how have you overcome them? Melissa: I am happier, and more content. I have found my purpose and passion in life. On a superficial level, my skin cleared up. I lost five kilos (and have kept it off without dieting). My eyes are brighter. My hair is thicker. My skin smoother, and my nails are stronger. I’ve been faced with loads of ‘challenges’ along my journey. But, I guess I don’t see them as that any more. I see them as opportunities for growth. I am here to help you end your tortuous relationship with yourself, karate chop your limiting beliefs and support you to live and have the life of your dreams. I am on a heartstring mission to help empower and inspire you to live your biggest, best and fullest life possible.
Vanessa: What does an average day in your life look like? (food, exercise, self-talk, ways to manage stress etc.)
I choose to see challenges and mistakes as beautiful gifts from the universe to go deeper within myself. Vanessa: What foods really nurture your soul? Are there foods you don’t eat at all? Melissa: Food that nurtures me includes: • Organic fresh local fruits and veggies. I also make raw food recipes. • Grass-fed and grass-finished organic animal products. • My fifteen-hour slow roast lamb recipe. Foods I don’t eat: • Processed, packaged, and boxed ‘food-like’ substances. • Sugar. • Gluten (it bloats me).
Melissa: Food: I eat three meals a day—I usually have my winter porridge for breakfast. Lunch is my protein power salad. And dinner is my slow roast lamb with coconut roasted veggies. Exercise: I move my body lovingly every single morning. Gone are the days where I would slog it out and push myself. I do things like yoga, walking, training with my personal trainer (Christian Miranda) where we might do boxing, sprints, weights). It’s different every time. I think it’s important to mix it up. That way, you stay interested. Also, you’re shocking your body. Otherwise your body gets accustomed to the exercise and it will no longer have the same effect. Self-Talk: My intention is to be present. When you’re present, you’re in your heart, it means there’s no thinking going on. However, if I do find my ego getting loud or creeping in on me, I quickly resort to my default setting of ‘I love and accept
myself unconditionally’. That will play automatically now if I ever feel myself slipping into ego junk. Stress: I use to be high-strung and very stressed. Now I find morning meditation for twenty minutes and deep breathing all day very helpful. Whenever I find myself feeling slightly overwhelmed, I’ll stop what I am doing, close my eyes and just breathe for a few minutes. It’s awesome! Try it! Vanessa: What does living an holistic lifestyle mean to you? Melissa: Living an holistic life means living as toxic free in all areas of your life as possible. Vanessa: What have been your biggest lessons coaching other people and what keeps your passion alive for helping and facilitating others? Melissa: This is my purpose. It’s in my blood. I love helping people. I believe this is what I came here to do. It fuels me and lights me up. So just waking up in the morning ignites my passion for helping people.

re you a person who nurtures others constantly, yet never has time to do that for yourself? Do you often say, thanks but No, or resist accepting, when someone offers you something, whether it is time, an outing, a pampering, some help? Do you find it difficult, well impossible, to say no to someone, regret not speaking up as you endure something you never wanted to do? We have all experienced these examples and more as wonderful moments on the road to self-discovery. There are so many over-nurturers, people who are there for others ALWAYS, who will take on more and more to see others comfortable, cared for and happy. There is nothing wrong with loving and caring for others however the problem with over nurturing of others can indicate a sense of lack of self-love, self-value, self-worth. The over nurturing can be about filling an emptiness within,a place where to be “giving” all the time feeds the “giver” with a sense of ‘acceptance,” they unconsciously yet desperately require. These people love to be needed, however
they very rarely will give to themselves, which results in illness, depletion, martyr syndrome, lethargy and more sinister disease. Our first duty and obligation is always to the self which is comprised of the body, mind and soul. The more we listen to the requirements of our spirit, care for all parts of our life, nurture the unique being that we are, the more we can give, share and be in the world at large with hearts full of joy and abundant energy. A number of years ago, engrossed in reading, the question was asked of me. “Don’t you feel you are wasting time, isn’t there something better that you could do?” My response was, “Right now I am feeding my mind and rejuvenating my body”. Actually, I was caring for myself. The dictionary defines nurturing as: “to nourish: feed”, (body), “to educate… learn”, (mind), “to help grow or develop,” (soul). Therefore it seems that nurturing is a powerful gift for all parts of our lives and to be whole complete beings, we first must offer this to the self.
All things are linked, woven together, dancing as one. Create one change, the rest follows. Benefits are immediate, and once experienced, you realise that selfnurturing is a priority. Nurturing of the body is taking precious care of the vehicle that houses your inner spark of spirit through choices around movement, food, relaxation, taking time to be in nature, learning how to breathe and creating stillness. The mind benefits as you hear your thoughts, take charge and improve the quality of your mental activity, create more positive thoughts, clarity, focus, visions to create your dreams. Then our soul reaps the rewards from the steps we take, translating into life as truth, integrity, trust, self-belief, compassion, courage and following our inner knowing and wisdom. Bring these three aspects together under the umbrella of nurture and you have more to offer and are more in the world.

n ancient times such as Atlantis and Egypt, the mind, body and soul were considered as whole and health was based around keeping these at equilibrium. It was and is important to nurture the mind, body and soul. In our modern day life many people forget to do this and the body reminds them through being ill and sometimes creating disease. When you were born, you didn’t come with an owner’s manual of how to nurture your mind, body and soul. You have had to learn the rules to life the challenging way. But there are universal rules intended to help make life easier. Nurture yourself through delicious food, great friends and knowing you are a hologram of pure perfection. Enjoy your universal life tools for mind, body and soul: 1. You will receive a body. You may like or hate it but it will be yours for the entire period of this time around. It is the only thing you own, or are guaranteed to
keep for your whole life. 2. You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full time informal school called LIFE on planet Earth. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons, or think them irrelevant or stupid. 3. There are no mistakes, only learning lessons. Growth is a process of experimentation – trial and error. The so-called failed experiment is as much a part of the process as the experiment that ultimately “works”. 4. A lesson is repeated until learned. It will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it then you can go on to the next lesson. If you don’t learn easy lessons, they become harder. You will know you’ve learned a lesson when your actions change. 5. Learning lessons does not end. There is no part of life that does not contain its lessons. Every person, every incident is the Universal teacher. If you
are alive, there are lessons to be learned. 6. There is no better than here. Nothing leads to happiness. When your there has become a here you will simply obtain another there that again looks better than here. 7. Others are merely mirrors of you. You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects to you something you love or hate in yourself. 8. What you create of your life is up to you. You have all the tools and resources you need; what you do with them is up to you. There are three kinds of people; i. those who make things happen, ii. those who watch what happens, iii. those who wonder what happened. Take charge of your life or someone else will! 9. Your answers lie inside you. Feel it and you shall be guided, satisfied and fulfilled every time. www.AbsoluteEmpowerment.com

Being in the
Flow of Life
A
By Soraya Saraswati – Soul Purpose Mastery
s I find greater flow in my life in aligning with my heart’s calling, I experience how delicate the balance of life is. Like a demanding child, the madness of the egocentric mind pulls and tugs demanding attention, distracting us from mindful conscious action in life. I have realised to be successful in achieving relaxation and presence in action, we are being asked to give 100% to each task we undertake. Having a creative mind can be challenging. With many works of art on the go in our lives none receiving 100% of our energy, nothing will grow. If however we can focus the enormous available potential energy through body, mind and intent, then we can manifest our heart’s desire while remaining relaxed and feeling as if life is nurturing us – body mind and soul in the process.
Just as a shaft of sunlight through a magnifying glass can spark a flame, when we gather scattered energy into one channel it becomes powerful. Less energy is wasted and we achieve our outcome while remaining focused, centered, steady and relaxed while acting. Most people feel the need to take some ‘time out’ for self nurture with a massage, yoga class or a movie night to slow down from the frantic pace of our life. This attempt to escape the madness of life for a short time while healthy, can prolong our pain if we then go right back to doing exactly what tipped us out of balance in the first place. Change often comes too late, as we push or drive ourselves out of balance until the stress has often crept into our body forming physical and/or mental or emotional pain. There is nothing wrong with the

yoga class or the massage however they can just be a part of our balanced life as opposed to an escape from a life not lovingly lived. If we take the attitude of mindfulness from our meditation into life, we begin to really walk our talk. Then we take charge of our life. We are no longer a victim to ‘the mania of life’ we choose to direct our life in a way that nurtures our body, mind and spirit. Life becomes a flow of what we love to do; an extension of our nature, our hearts choosing. We can all achieve this, not just the chosen few. It begins with an internal shift, a choice to live life more consciously. There are no victims, we can all embrace life and its perfection. From every moment springs an opportunity to deepen in presence, compassion and love.

oday most people focus on just treating the symptoms of disease or illness. We are blindly taking painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs or antidepressants, numbing the pain without realising that our health problem is only increasing. If we only treat the symptoms then we can only control or temporary eliminate our problems. The body is asking for our attention by showing us signs, but often we ignore it. Diseases are nothing more than signs and symptoms that reflect the body’s need to clean and rebuild itself. So often in my clinic I see patients taking multitudes of different drugs yet still suffering from a variety of health issues. What I’ve learned in my 15 years of successfully treating patients is that the best way to correct the health issues is to get to the root of the problem and clean the system. When you correct the cause of the problem, the symptoms will automatically go away. Detoxification is the best method to get to the true cause by removing toxins causing inflammation, congestion, and
cellular damage leading to tissue failure. Toxins such as pesticides, chemicals and heavy metals are making our system acidic, congested and deprived of oxygen. Detoxification is the pillar of health and vitality. Our body is a living, conscious machine. It has a capacity to rebuild itself after surgeries, major wounds and cuts, so why not support that process and let it do its job without interfering with a natural process of regeneration and rebuilding? Proper detoxification can clean the obstructions and irritants allowing proper digestion, absorption, utilisation of nutrients and elimination. Detoxification is the only way to establish a true homeostasis within the body. It is a necessary response to the consumption of toxic and congestive foods that have clogged and obstructed our systems. The body naturally is always trying to keep itself clean through sweating, frequent urination, colds, flu and by simple daily elimination. However, we are consuming on a daily basis excessive amounts of acid forming
foods such as grains, meats, dairy products, alcohol, sugar and processed foods. This overload is causing nutrients and blood cells to stick together leading to cell starvation as the nutrients are unavailable to the cells. Another effect of acidosis is dehydration and oxygen deprivation. Acidosis always equals pain, swelling and inflammation. Don’t know about you, but to me it makes perfect sense to correct that unhealthy acidic state and remove all the congestion, letting the blood flow freely delivering oxygen and nutrients to the cells. Only then can the body rebuild itself and regenerate, bringing vitality and restoring energy again. It is very important to educate yourself about the foods you are eating and pay attention to what your body is saying. Always ask yourself, what could be a cause of that problem and focus on that. www.detoxhouse.com.au

Nurturing
Mind
By Vanessa Bushell
M
ind, body and emotion play an integral game of inter-related symbiosis. Mind is the vehicle of thought, while emotions are mostly felt in our physical body. Body sensations trigger whole stories of thought and memory. Likewise, thought sets off a whole series of bodily reactions. In amongst the mix, emotions react to both thoughts and physical sensations. With such a close relationship, no wonder chronic emotional and mental anguish eventually lead to chronic disease! Nurturing the mind is foundational to maintaining a healthy body and visa versa. However we generally know a lot more about keeping the body fit and healthy than we do about our minds. The f rst step in nurturing mind The first step in nurturing our mind is to realise that we are not our mind. Because we live in a culture that is strongly information and thought driven, we tend to believe we are our
thoughts, memories and attitudes. Thought is an energetic manifestation of spirit, just like our body is. To challenge Descartes idea that “I think therefore I am”, Eastern philosophies and alternative therapies understand thought as mental activity that emanates from the finer energies, or the soul. This is an incredibly powerful concept, as it sees mind as a tool to be mastered rather than our essence. Since we are not our minds, the mind becomes something to look after, nurture, cultivate and master. Self-limiting beliefs lose power over us when we strengthen our inner spiritual presence and self-awareness. While our truth manifests through thought, the truth itself is not thought but rather a deeply felt sense or inner “knowing”. So the first step is to recognise what the mind actually is. Mindfulness and cultivating a peaceful, healthy mind Once we are aware that thought

is simply a manifestation of mind and can easily lead us astray, we now embark on learning how to train our mind. Mindfulness teaches us to witness thought without attaching to its content. This process allows us to feel the emotions attached to thought as an observer, rather than being caught within the thoughts and emotion. The stronger the emotional intensity, the more challenging it is to remain mindful. However, this is a practice that can be developed and strengthened over time. Watching the mind rather than being ruled by it helps us to come into a place of peace and inner power and to recover from anxiety, depression and a range of other forms of mental distress. Regular mindfulness practice is nurturing the mind as well as training it to remain calm, even in an information hungry, mentally overloaded world. Did you know that the first cervical vertebra, the atlas, is out of alignment in most people? This circumstance leads to a variety of physical and psychological ailments and illnesses. Atlasprofilax is a neuromuscular technique that liberates the Atlas with only one application accurately, safely and permanently. This powerful relocation immediately activates a self-healing and harmonising process. It is holistic in nature, promoting wellness and rejuvenation on all levels, mind, body and spirit. This method is nonmedical, non-chiropratic.
One Treatment Can Be Life Changing The Atlas supports your head and governs structural alignment. A misaligned Atlas causes restriction of the brain stem, spinal cord, cranial nerves and arteries. This limits our potential for wellbeing and creates tension, restricting the free flow of energy. When the Atlas is installed correctly, the body begins an unwinding process, releasing holding patterns and enabling the body to heal and regenerate.

Are you 18 Times More Likely to Suffer from Neck Pain and Headaches?
T
he latest spinal research is showing the effects of poor posture and how being out of alignment is impacting your health, negatively. A recent study has shown that when you lose the natural curvature in your neck, you are 18x more likely to suffer from headaches and neck pain. The normal curve in your neck is meant to be 31-40 degrees. The less curvature you have in your neck, the more likely you are to suffer from these chronic conditions. Structure determines function, and function determines structure. We need our body, mind, spirit, and life to be in balance. Check yourself in the mirror: is your head, shoulders, and pelvis even? Does the centre of your ear sit over your shoulder and over your pelvis? There is a good chance if you are not balanced, your health is suffering as a result. The neck, or cervical spine, is comprised of 7 bones, stacked one on top of the other, with nerves that come out between each bone. When the cervical spine is in the proper position, the bones form a smooth banana shaped C-curve, and the nerves that come out between each bone are free to transmit signals from the brain throughout the body without interference. Poor
posture not only takes the C out of the neck, but also causes irritation to the nerves and increases the speed of degeneration in the body. Mayo Clinic states that the most common cause of neck pain is strained muscles from poor posture i.e. looking at a computer all day. But how does poor posture cause pain? As a culture, we spend the majority of our day looking down. Whether it is on the computer, or bent over in some form of manual labour, the act of sustained flexion causes improper biomechanics of the spine. Studies show when the curve in your neck moves forward out of its normal position, your spinal cord experiences up to 18kg of pressure and the spinal cord is severely stretched. This stretching narrows the cord and as a result there is intense neurological compromise. When the spine is put under constant stress, your body will shift the vertebra into different positions to try to relieve the discomfort! If you can see that your posture is off, a chiropractic exam can correct your posture and prevent these conditions from ever occurring. The team at Hendrey Chiropractic are specifically trained to locate and correct all your posture problems. Email: info@hendreychiropractic.com.au

A Def nition of
By Charles Virtue
W
Divinity
hile several clinical and metaphysical interpretations may exist, true divinity somehow transcends meaning and becomes instead a state of being. Divinity is about being one with everything around you including the good and God in everyone you meet. We call this oneness and it comes from living with and through your heart and allowing trust in the energy within and around you. In some cultures this is known as a form of enlightenment or Zen, and while achievable by anyone – the secret is how to maintain this heightened state of being. To live your life in divinity you must allow yourself to completely let go of control and expectation; allow heaven and the angels to be your eyes and other senses. Your only job is to pilot this vehicle known as a ‘body’ through all aspects of daily life and allow the enhancement of heavenly guidance to steer you through this world. Believe it or not, there is a divine plan in store for you that you chose when coming into
your body. You have complete free-will so how much or little you decide to stay on this path is your choice to make; and heaven never judges a single decision you make. Living in divinity requires exertion at first as we begin to reprogram our minds, bodies and emotions to state of optimistic surrender even when circumstances and situations threaten to disrupt our bliss. Over time, however, as our trust in the universe and faith in ourselves becomes more engrained, we find that our new way of interacting with the world is beginning to bring about amazing life changes. As with any newly acquired skill divinity finds its way into every aspect of your being and becomes the automatic part of your mind and emotional being. Soon enough you’ll find that situations that used to bother you and linger in your energy are as easy to release as a winter jacket near the fireplace. As we continue to maintain a passive energy and not allow ourselves to be a part of the negativity in this world,
the angels see this as a prayer and manifestation to bring more of this energy into your path. It is important that you allow the angels to work with you in an interactive fashion to keep your energy replenished and to help you clear blocks and negativity. The angels are there around the clock without exception to help you live the balanced, purposeful and fulfilled life you know you deserve. Do not let anything or anyone sway you from what you know you were born to do; which is to raise the vibration of the world by being an example of love and divinity with every move you make. Charles Virtue will be here in Australia for the first time in June and July. For more info contact: www.CharlesVirtueDownUnder2013.com

add a littleTantra
Spice
to your life
By Philip Millroy – Relationship/Sexuality Coach
T
antra is an ancient spiritual tradition that honours the sacred union of the male and female energies. Tantra is the practice of allowing an individual to recognise their sexual nature and master their sexual energy. By exploring their sexuality, an individual is able to identify and bring to the fore limiting and restraining emotional blocks. Tantra teaches processes and techniques to heal these emotions and aid personal and spiritual growth, using the healing powers of sex and intimacy. Sexual energy can be creative at all levels - physical, emotional and spiritual. As humans we feel attraction, arousal, awakening, alertness, passion, interest, inspiration, excitement, creativity, enthusiasm - Sexual energy is at play in these situations, “When we feel these
states of awareness, we must put our attention on our experience, nourishing it, experiencing it feeling each moment with joy in our awareness.” Deepak Chopra What Tantric sex looks like will be different for different people and you don’t have to have a partner to practice Tantra. Tantra is taught by many teachers around the world, who have their own take on it, influenced by the cultures they grew up in. Certainly a key feature of Tantric sex is the importance of breathing, and slowing down sexual behaviour compared to the hectic, orgasm-focused Western approach. INTIMACY - CREATE YOUR SPACE This should be a comfortable area that is playful and relaxed. First, clear the room of any attention-grabbing clutter. Next, decorate with flowers, candles and cosy fabrics. Scent is really important to our sensuality, so try natural oils like jasmine, ylang-ylang, or rose. Make sure your bed is as comfortable as possible with soft sheets and a number of pillows. Lastly, chose a soundtrack of music that you both like. Play it softly in the background
to enhance your mood. BREATH By harmonising your breath you’re sharing all of yourself with your partner and is one of the easiest ways to sync with your partner. Inhale while they exhale and vice versa. As your partner breathes out, you’ll find yourself taking their breath into and down through your entire body. EYES OPEN CONTACT Holding your partner’s gaze is one of the most intimate and spiritual aspects of sacred sexuality. It takes concentration and, most of all, trust. Keeping your eyes open is fundamental to a deep connection in spiritual intimacy. It is not easy to be seen, especially by the people we love; we may feel exposed, or even silly. SLOW IT DOWN Use this time to fully focus on each other. As in meditation, when your thoughts wander, gently guide your attention back to your partner and the magic of the moment. Foreplay is an essential joy and adds to the bliss in Tantra. www.realfeelings.net

Hugs, Happiness and Health By Janet McGeever
I
used to be such a stress head. It didn’t matter what was going on, things would often turn into a drama of some kind or another. My children were small, I had two businesses, a relationship… Things have changed – well children grow up and so do we. But there has been one thing that has drastically changed my life having a profound and deep influence. I’ve discovered how bonding through loving intimate exchanges can settle the nervous system and actually have profound health giving results. We all know that children will die from lack of touch. A hundred years ago, 99% of babies in orphanages in the US, died before they were 7 months old. They simply wasted away. In hospitals now, when children are sick or premature, even though they are given the same amount of food, the ones that are touched, through 15 minutes of massage three times a day or rocked and cuddled by parents or volunteers, grow faster, gain more weight and will leave the hospital more quickly.
Not only that, the caregivers report that when they regularly massage babies, they drink less coffee, made fewer trips to the doctor and report lower anxiety levels, fewer symptoms of depression, and improved self-esteem. Both child and adult were engaging in a bonding experience, simply loving affection. Well what’s the difference between children and adults? Really nothing. We all have skin over 100% of our body. If a couple wish to sustain, enhance or rekindle the intimate side of their relationship, there’s no better place to start than with simple bonding experiences. Forget the sensational goals of the sparks and bliss. They will happen naturally. Simply relaxing with each other, touching, caressing, snuggling, kissing, loving and giving, in a less driven style of intimacy actually allows oxytocin, the ‘cuddle’ hormone to be released. This is the hormone that helps to bond infants with their parents and it’s no different for a couple. It relaxes and bonds a couple in a very deep and meaningful way.
Oxytocin is also the hormone that activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is where deep healing, deep restoration of body, mind and soul can happen. Couples who devote even 15minutes a day to intentional bonding feel the benefit and the ongoing effect on their relationship. Emotional disruptions fall away, intimacy increases, and compassion and kindness naturally replace resentment or anger. What’s important though, is to do this, just like the babies, on a regular daily basis – daily. And for singles, gaining this touch through regular massage, hugging friends, cuddling babies, children or pets are a great option until the right person comes along! Ok, I still get stressed – I’m human. But, there’s no longer drama, I am more resilient, healthier and far happier! hat is Awareness? Awareness is magical! It heals, it nurtures, it inspires, it contributes greatly to the health of our bodies, it energetically hydrates us, and it can be likened to the ‘wind underneath our wings’, or ‘water to our roots’! Expanding us, growing us, keeping us light and free. It is the wisdom of what your body is saying to you. EVERYTHING around you is a reflection of what is inside you. The good, the bad the great and the not so great! Your body is only always and in all ways communicating to you. It is designed to give you information all the time. You can receive this communication in many ways. When you use and acknowledge ‘awareness’ regularly, your body will communicate your inner wisdom to you via ‘aha’s’, curiosity, gut feelings, dreams, connections, synchronicities, etc. If you do not easily receive or acknowledge the wisdom your body desires to share with you, it can communicate in other ways. It can be in physical ways, such as pain, aches, accidents etc. It can be in chemical ways, skin issues, hormonal imbalances, diet issues etc. It can be in emotional ways, depression, anger, frustration, guilt, heaviness etc. It can also be in energetic ways, low energy, too much energy etc. Why receive and acknowledge awareness? It grows you via YOUR inner wisdom. Awareness gives YOU the ability to know who you are. ANYTHING you desire to create has a possibility to be created via your body and the universe. For example, if you desire to be fit, communicate harmoniously to loved ones, lose weight, be in a loving

of Awareness relationship, have abundance, have a fulfilling career or be happy each day, listening to your body and becoming aware of your wisdom, is the key to the creation being in your reality. As you begin to really know you, your choices become more in line with the desires in your heart rather than the expectations of others. With awareness, your life will begin to change and be what you choose rather than what you wish for. Deep within you are your family’s roots, and their family’s before that. Most patterns and programs, thought processes, behaviours and reactions come from here. Which is great if they serve you and contribute to you. When you operate on ‘automatic’ you tend to pull from this source. However a lot of them do not serve you AND in some cases could be really holding you back. You also have the ability to pull on your knowings, your higher self, your heart energy, your wisdom or the world of infinite possibilities. This area of valuable information and direction can be accessed through gathering and exploring the awareness your body
would love to share with you through its communications. What does it do for your body? Awareness unlocks the blocks in your body that let in ‘universal’ energy into your body. This energy is what grows us towards our light. This energy is the energy that grows and balances everything on our planet. ‘Universal energy is the energy that moves the sun, the moon and the tides. The ‘universal’ energy fuels the systems in our body and then is used to fuel our chosen creations. When you regularly use awareness it can be likened to regularly watering a plant. You grow naturally. The old parts fall away in a non-dramatic and gentle process and the new parts continually grow with ease and towards the light. The plant uses the universal energy to grow. Simply, life flows through the ups and downs. If the plant gets no water its roots dig deep into the soil in search of it. This can be likened to those old unwanted past family behaviours that show up when we get stressed. If there is lots of light, heat from the sun without water it can actually
hurt the plants’ leaves by drying them out. This can be likened to an excess of mental knowledge, or overload in information that ignores trusting in your heart and its desires. The plant suffers without the regular water. If the plant has been through a time without hydration it wilts and will begin using its own internal energy rather than the ‘universal’ energy. This will leave it feeling tired and exhausted. It can take days to come back to being fully hydrated after it’s been watered again. AND all the bits that have half died, stay half dead! In other words, don’t just use awareness or listen to your body when it is screaming at you through pain or suffering, drama or heartache. Choose to learn how to tap the awareness in your body every day! Choose to begin to have the best relationship ever known with YOU and YOUR wisdom. Choose to use awareness in the times of happiness and abundance. It is in this way you will grow, expand and easily be of contribution to the whole world AND never run out of energy. It is in this way you will truly live a life of happiness, each and every day.

Are we using our Mind, Body and Spirit as One?
T
By Shannon Ichikawa
here are times when I am washing the dishes, watching my baby play, planning my shopping list and listening to music. Multi-tasking can be useful in this busy world, but is it as powerful as when I focus on one thing at a time? Aikido, a beautiful and harmonious Martial Art from Japan has taught me multitudes about life, energy, and particularly, unifying mind, body and spirit. When I consciously decide to just wash the dishes, putting my all into it, feeling the water, the textures of each plate – no other thought in my mind, and body relaxed – I feel such a sense of peace and focus and a simple household job is turned into a moving meditation! There are many that recommend this practice – it is the practice of being in the moment. This aspect of Aikido can easily be brought into our every day. Try it while doing the dishes, while driving or exercising – you do not need to be practising Aikido to put this into practice. I recommend doing this when connecting with your kids or loved ones – just be together – fully look into their eyes, feel their giggles deep in your heart. Play
something they want to play, leaving behind the temptation to plan dinner, or check texts when they are not looking. At Noosa Kids’ Aikido, the children learn about these aspects of Aikido through training. Kids have a natural ability to invest full energy into the moment, something that we adults could observe and learn! Whatever you want to achieve, whether it be a mundane daily activity or something you love and want to excel at, invest your full energy and attention with joy and enthusiasm! Unifying mind, body and spirit creates more ease and a quality finished product or experience. This is very nurturing, leaving us and the people we come in contact with touched by our peace. Koichi Tohei Sensei said, “When we unify our mind and body and become one with The Universe, we can use the great power that is naturally ours”. Aikido training teaches us this, bringing this knowing into our body’s intelligence in our everyday lives. This spills easily over into our relationships and the way we live in the world. All About Kids…
an Invitation to a Different Possibility
By Anne Maxwell
A
s a parent or teacher or day care provider or grandparent or friend or … do you wonder sometimes what’s going on with the kids in your life? What makes them tick? What they are saying, especially when their words don’t seem to match? Do they seem like a burden at times? Do you feel bad about that? Do you function from trying to control them? What if they don’t need to be controlled? “If kids weren’t a burden, what could they be?” What beliefs do you have about kids? Some of the ones that were around when I was growing up were: Kids should be seen and not heard! He’s too young to understand! Good thing it all happened when she was a baby! He’s acting out … he needs a behavior chart! She should lose recess! Kids should behave! I’m the parent (or teacher, or grandparent) … and therefore I know what’s best for her! What if there was a different way to be with kids? What if you could speak their language … no matter their age,
who they are, their experiences, their past, what others say about them … and about you? Instead of viewing them as being a problem or having “issues,” what if you could recognise and facilitate their talents and abilities and capacities … with ease? And, what if you could give yourself permission to be who you are and to create a phenomenal life for you, and, give your kids permission to be and do the same? What contribution could they be to you and you to them? If you had the tools to use to tap into all of this … into what you do know … what could you begin to create together? For starters: 1. Ask questions: • What if my/this child isn’t wrong? And, if he weren’t wrong, what would he be? • What do I know here? • What if I’m not wrong? And, if I weren’t wrong, what would I be? • Is behavior a form of communication? If so, you could ask yourself: What is she saying (when she “acts out”)?
2. Don’t judge yourself! What if you are doing the very best you know to do right now? And, what if your child is too? Ref exology
Rocks! R
eflexology is an holistic, noninvasive therapy which compliments other therapies and modern medicine. This unique modality is a serious advance in the health field, and should not be confused with massage. HOW DOES REFLEXOLOGY WORK? Reflexology promotes balance in physical, mental, emotional and energetic levels of the body. And it’s a science that deals with the principle that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands that correspond to all of the glands, organs and parts of the body. The reflexologist taps into the nervous system as it travels to and from the feet reaching these body areas. It is a unique method of using thumbs and fingers on these reflex areas using soft, medium and hard pressure to
clear blockages and promote balance and energy through the body. Some proven benefits of reflexology are: it relaxes you and relieves stress, improves sleep and circulation, increases vitality, detoxifies and enhances healing of the body. Reflexology is definitely the ‘better weapon’ in pain control in that a number of chemical changes take place in the body during a reflexology treatment. IS REFLEXOLOGY NEW? The principle behind Reflexology is not new – it is known to date back to the ancient Egyptians and the Chinese, circa 2400 years BC. Modern Reflexology was pioneered by Eunice Ingham who published a book on the subject in America in the 1930s. Since that time Reflexology has gained in acceptance and popularity worldwide. In Australia, reflexologists are recognised by many health funds
that give their clients rebates. In addition, reflexologists maintain their professional status yearly as members of the Reflexology Association of Australia, current CPR and First Aid Certificates, Insurance Policy and commit to ongoing education. Sunshine Coast based reflexologist, Courtney Alexander Crook agrees that reflexology is a powerful tool for maintaining health. “My passion is reflexology. The Ingham Method is my foundation method and I apply other reflexology techniques to compliment Ingham. Ingham is thorough and medium pressure. If a client requests hard pressure I use the Asian Method. Sessions take an hour for full body but I can custom a session to suit a client’s needs and target a particular problem.”

Journey of a
Joyologist
By Marc Bright
A
s part of a recent life change I have started honouring the value of joy in my life. I have become a joyologist working with a new purpose to know and experience more joy in my life. The decision to focus on joy and gratitude was a catalyst for newness and change and I felt this commitment to joy would enable me to take the necessary steps towards the vision of ‘who I am’ and ‘what I enjoy’. Here I was, Marc Bright, a 53-yearold, an Australian male in the midst of life changing considerations. I began wondering and questioning the purpose of many of my experiences as an artist, performer, short documentary maker, landscaper, sports fitness leader, world traveller, (and in my early life a professional golfer). What applications would this collection of experiences actually have for an emerging joyologist in these changing, challenging times!? With no clear-cut answers at hand, I decided to take some powerful strides towards releasing the things that were not serving the joy in me. What followed was
a series of decisive actions. I went about shedding ‘unworkable attachments’ and ‘general-stuff ’ I had ‘clung onto’. The brief list of ‘things that went from me’ included many material items, relationships, cars, homes, computer files and ‘outmoded ways’ of living my life. I could sense other ‘partialcompletions’ were helping to shape my life in positive ways. A kind of ‘in-between worry-energy’ that had pervaded my life ( I called this my ‘various joyless hesitancy’!) was slowly dissipating and reducing its influence over my decision making. There were noteworthy shifts in my ‘feelings of lack’ and the ‘big fear-daddy’(which is the fear of living joyfully and being truly joyfully abundant). Encouraged by small advancements, I increased my attention to what was happening inside and my inner most thoughts and feelings. In particular, I examined the feelings attached to the content of my self-talk. Taking a good deep breath, I decided there was some mixed-up unhappy stuff going on ‘inside there’. I needed a
new way of being and so I developed ‘Joyologists self reflection technique’ to identify what was happening inside me and to apply ‘Joystartnow’ (strategies to alleviate any noticeable fear, worry, and non-joy). Once this was put in action, I felt a need to increase feelings of well being, self acceptance, humility, vitality, gratitude and personal peace in any way and as soon as possible. My way of doing this was to utilise all the creative therapies I had at my disposal. I combined art, music, improvised drama play, story-telling, dance, physical exercise including walks in nature with cultural people, swimming, sports, laughter – Qigong, party fun, balloonology, personal development workshops, playshops, meditation, massage, tasty food and fresh water. I sought out the company of lovely friends and put some focussed energy into positive thoughts for the greater good of all things. Would you like to be and have more joy? Choose a House site from a Feng Shui Perspective! By Jeannine Stephens
W
hen you look at a house site, view it through observing nature, aiming to adapt to the site’s topography. Walk the site….does it feel and look different from different levels? Can you envision landscaping pathways reflecting these perspectives? Go to the front of the site- look inwards. Look where you would locate the house. Can you see the flow of contours and how a house would ‘settle’ into them? Imagine if the land would be capable of ‘embracing’ the house as if it were sitting in a huge armchair. Look up, down, behind, over and beyond! What catches your eye? Would your site protect you from cold winds, allow sunlight in, possess a beautiful view, have good soil drainage and catch breezes? How will they influence your house? Does the site have the potential for the outdoor space to flow from a public to a very private space. Instruct your architect to ‘sculpt’ the design of your home into the unique topography of the site. And remember, imagine where your front door would be located, as this Qi affects the wellbeing and fortune of all in the home.

he full force of his anger and his fist hit me squarely in the face. “You FOOL” he yelled, “if it wasn’t for you we would have been here with
her”. Our little sister, Lizzie, had just told us that Mum had passed away. A few hours earlier, my brother and I were in a pub in London where we had been working for the last few months. We had been sent word that she had taken a turn for the worse the day before, so were on our way home. “One more for the road” I had insisted, ignoring Billy’s disapproving glare as I caught the barman’s eye. Billy reached for his gold pocket watch for the fourth time in as many minutes and pointed out that the train was due to leave in 15 minutes. “Ah! Billy, you worry too much – the station is only 10 minutes away, and when have you ever known a British Rail train to leave on time anyway?” was my scornful response. So, we had one more drink and made it to the station just in time – just in time to see the last carriage disappearing from view that is. I was a little apologetic, but there was another train in 3 hours time so, what the heck, we may as well go back to the pub. We eventually arrived at our destination in the

Midlands and hurried home to see Mum. She had passed away an hour before our arrival. This scene unfolded during a past life regression session. I was skilfully guided to release the intense feelings of guilt and remorse, and to connect with the souls of both Mum and Billy enabling me to experience their unconditional love, forgiveness and understanding. I now understood my obsessive need to be on time in this life, always preferring to be ten minutes early than a minute late and, in a strange reversal of roles, getting annoyed with other people who were not so mindful of time. And, even better than mere understanding, my compulsion has eased. I no longer rush and tear just so I won’t be a minute late meeting a friend for a coffee! We may have carried emotions, thoughts and even physical issues from past lives through into our current life so that they can be resolved and healed. PLR Therapy can allow us to access memories that help to explain issues (phobias, habits etc) that we are currently experiencing and free ourselves from their influence. This can be truly transformational and enable us to live more fully and with greater purpose. For more information visit www.consciousmoves.com.au

Could
Kindness Be A Key in Rediscovering You?
By Wendy Mulder
W
hat if the first gift of grief is rediscovering your ability to be kind to you...? Most of us are kind to everyone else except ourselves… What would be nurturing and comforting for you, rather than distressing and painful? What does kindness mean to you? Make a list of 10 things that kindness means to you. Would you be willing to explore your beliefs around kindness? Is kindness to yourself being selfish or could it actually be nurturing to the core of your wellbeing? On a scale of 1-10 how kind are you to yourself? (Where 1 is unkind and 10 is very kind…) Would you be willing to start putting yourself first and asking some questions that could allow you to rediscover you? Here are some questions to play with… Is kindness support? How do you support you? Do you allow for the sadness and tears to come and flow through you? Do you allow others to support you and contribute to your
nurturing, or do you hold back and hold it all in! Is kindness listening to your body? Do you have aches and pains, are you tired and stressed? Would your body like a rest? Would your body enjoy some space or nurturing? When our body doesn’t feel good, it is telling us something. When you nurture your body you’ll notice it feels lighter and refreshed… this is your body’s way of talking to you. Is kindness enjoyment …? What is it that you love to do that makes you feel good and lighter. Is it going to the country, riding your bike, having a massage? What feels like kindness to you? Is kindness listening to your inner knowing? Instead of listening to everybody’s points of view and thoughts on what you should or shouldn’t do, what if you were to see it all as just their interesting point of view. When you choose for you first, you don’t buy everybody else’s point of view. Would
that feel light and kind to you? If it feels light it’s true for you… if it feels heavy, it’s a lie! Is kindness gratitude…for you and knowing your loved one for as long as you did…? Is it the words that you speak to yourself? What if you were to stop beating yourself up about what you could have or should have done or said? What if the words and thoughts you are using are keeping you in a space of trauma and pain? Would you be willing to be kind to yourself and be grateful for the gift of knowing this person? IS KINDNESS… ALL OF THE ABOVE and the willingness to allow you to be yourself without judgment? What if you were truly unique the way you are and that is exactly how you are meant to be? What does this feel like for you? Would you be willing every day for the next week to do or be something that is being kind to you? wendymulder.accessconsciousness.com

Feeling Fat, Fatigued & Forgotten?
T
here is a modern-day epidemic of people suffering from what Leisa Wheeler, naturopath and leading fatigue expert, terms The ‘F’ Words. Feeling like fat, fatigued, forlorn, forgotten, failures; many women are suffering in silence, having been unable to find answers to their health concerns from the medical profession. Quite often blood test results are returned within normal range, and many doctors assume that you are tired because you are stressed, gaining weight because you eat too much, or they may offer you a medication for your depression. Little is done to address the underlying cause of these debilitating symptoms. Affecting mainly women, there can be enormous frustration when “diets” don’t seem to work, and the fatigue is relentless. There can be despair at not having enough energy to do more than just get by, and anxiety and
38

depression are frequent. These symptoms are suggestive of health disorders ranging from mild, to potentially life-threatening, and are often experienced by those suffering with underactive adrenal and thyroid conditions. These glands regulate metabolism, energy, and mood, so it is no wonder problems develop in these areas when these vital glands are not working as well as they should be. Weight is easily gained – which is difficult to lose – and the weight-loss myth of “eat less and exercise more” produces very little results. For some people, these symptoms become so severe that their quality of life is destroyed to the point where they cannot function normally. However there are answers to these health issues! Leisa, having suffered with severe adrenal fatigue and an autoimmune thyroid condition herself, has spent over a decade researching
these conditions in-depth. She has helped hundreds of people regain their health, when they thought all hope was lost. Leisa’s solution to healing includes comprehensive functional pathology testing, detoxification, food as medicine, individualised herbal and supplement programs, as well as exploring the emotional aspects of healing. Believing that true healing must encompass an exploration of all facets of a person’s life, her upcoming book The ‘F’ Word Solution™, (launching February 2014), takes readers on that journey. To introduce the concepts and answers explored within The ‘F’ Word Solution™ Leisa is holding a one-anda-half day event on the Gold Coast in August. The event also features acclaimed Chef Cat Cannizzaro from WildRaw taking guests through two raw food preparation classes. www.embracinghealth.com.au/events

Bamboo – is it really eco-friendly? with Amanda Rootsey was used for the hand-made production of paper throughout Asia. Thanks to modern technology, bamboo pulp can now be turned in to fabric. As a plant, bamboo does wonders for the planet. It grows quickly and requires much less water to grow than cotton. Bamboo has no natural pests, so it can be grown with little or no use of pesticides or herbicides. It sequesters more CO2 and generates up to 35% more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees. All of this adds to its popularity as a sustainable fashion alternative. It is the processing of the fabric that is not so eco-friendly. Processing bamboo can be done either chemically or mechanically. The chemical process is fairly intense, involving the leaves and soft inner pith of the trunks to be extracted and crushed, then soaked in chemicals, pressed, dried, infused with more chemicals and then forced through spinneret nozzles into a large container of a diluted sulfuric acid solution which results in cellulose bamboo fibre threads. These threads are then spun in to bamboo fibre to be woven in to reconstructed and regenerated
W
hen we understand that natural, organic fibres can be so nourishing and nurturing for our body, it’s no wonder that the demand for eco-fashion is on the rise. With so many brands and companies jumping on the green bandwagon, it can be hard to know what to look for and which fabrics are actually eco-friendly. Hemp, bamboo, modal, tencel, linen, cotton, organic cotton… there are so many options! So we are going to take a closer look at some of these fabrics in the coming issues. This issue we are focusing on bamboo. Bamboo is a fairly new fabric in the fashion world, certainly in comparison to cotton. It is beautifully soft, often being compared with silk or cashmere, and is easy to launder. It has antibacterial properties and can even protect against UV rays. Bamboo is actually a tropical grass, and historically the pulp of the plant
bamboo fabric. Still with me? The mechanical process involves crushing the woody parts of the bamboo plant and then using natural enzymes to break the bamboo walls down so that the natural fibres can be mechanically combed out and spun in to yarn. This is generally more labour intensive and costly than chemical processing. So, while bamboo is a beautiful fabric to wear and the bamboo plant is a sustainable crop, the process involved with taking the plant to fabric is where its eco-cred is let down. All we can do is try to inform ourselves and make the best choices with the options we have when it comes time to purchase. Beautiful Skin, Naturally! By Mukti – Organic/eco skincare pioneer
L
ike any woman in her 30’s, 40’s and beyond who is concerned about looking as good as you can for as long as you can, my desire was to create a range of products that addressed the visible signs of aging. In a similar vein to the development of all the Mukti products, when I was unable to find “anti-aging” products that met my personal criteria, I set about to create my own. The process has taken over 3 years of research and development. The outcome offers, an alternative to injectables with fast acting, visible results that are scientifically validated, without the unnecessary chemicals and toxins. Every ingredient in the Mukti Age Defence Collection has been chosen to
assist with rejuvenating and maintaining the skin, controlling moisture loss as well as repairing and restoring damaged skin. They are naturally compatible and work together to inhibit free radical formation, protect and regulate collagen production, maintain skin elasticity, reduce inflammation, detoxify the skin, stimulate cell turn over and cellular repair, and even out pigmentation and age spots. We have found through clinical trials that the results are immediate and continue to improve with regular and cumulative use. A significantly higher than normal ratio of specific peptides is infused into a certified organic, cold formulated base that retains the integrity of the active constituents. A combination of native Australian extracts and aloe vera imbued with a synergistic blend of powerful botanical extracts, phyto-chemicals, vitamins and plant based antioxidants such as green tea, sea buckthorn berries and pomegranate. NATIVE AUSTRALIAN EXTRACTS: Assist with the synthesis of collagen and skin rejuvenation. They have high active constituents of Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s), powerful antioxidants
and aid regeneration of the skin by gently exfoliating the dead skin cells from the surface and assist with moisture retention. ANTIOXIDANTS: Protect cells from free radical damage inflicted by environmental and oxidative stresses. PEPTIDES: Peptides have been studied for more than 50 years, and are one of the most popular functional ingredients in skin care products. Basically, they are shortchain proteins that naturally occur in the skin and act mainly as messengers or hormones. They have been shown to play a key role in natural skin healing processes. The amino acid sequence and chain structure determine the specific biological activity and function on the skin. VITAMINS: Contain antioxidants and assist with maintaining the overall integrity of the skin. Vitamins in the Age Defence Collection include vitamin A, C, E and niacinamide. PAWS FOR THOUGHT THIS MONTH, AUSTRALIA’S PUPCAKE QUEEN, TANYA ARNOLD, INTERVIEWS A KNOWLEDGEABLE GERMAN SHEPHERD WHO SHARES HIS TIPS ON NURTURING THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL.
A: My approach to life is an holistic one. If I were to spend all my time focussing on developing my spiritual awareness and nothing on my mind or body, I would be out of balance. Each is as important as the other. To maintain optimum physical and mental health, one of the things I do is ensure I drink plenty of water. It doesn’t take long at all for our bodies to become dehydrated and this can affect how we feel, how we perform and our approach to life. When it comes to nurturing my soul, I do the things that I love to do. This may be as simple as going for a walk along the beach or visiting a new place. A few minutes in a calm environment is all I need to rejuvenate myself and experience the beauty of life. I also love making new
friends, as everybody has something to teach us and I love learning. My approach to life as you said Tanya, is disciplined. If I am not conscious of each action I take, I am not fulfilling each moment to its fullest. You need courage to take responsibility for every action in your life and accept that you have the power to make each decision in our life. It is ultimately up to us if we are willing to embrace this or not. Q: Sheriff, life can be very busy for dogs these days. Whether it’s developing their skills at obedience training, attending doggy day care, or taking care of the home while their owners are at work, dogs can find it difficult to find the time to nurture themselves. What would you say to them? A: It is all a choice really. I’ve been there. I know what it is like to feel helpless and like you are on a never ending treadmill of chaos, praying to win the Doggy Lottery so that you will have the time to enjoy life and take
Photo Just Dogs Photography
Q: Sheriff, you have a disciplined and grounded approach to life. Would you mind sharing with our readers ways in which you successfully nurture your mind, body and soul?
care of yourself. It took me a number of years to realise that the only way things were going to change was if I made the changes. When you make this realisation, it can be quite overwhelming, but if you take small steps one at a time, you can change your life and create the lifestyle you want. It may not happen overnight, but with discipline, hard work and focus, anything is possible.

Passionate Pet Lovers Go Global!
S
unshine Coast couple, David and Julie Coleman are the proud owners of a flourishing pet treat manufacturing company. What started with a love of dogs and wanting to make a difference in the community, has turned into an exciting adventure that has led to them selling their products all over the world. David and Julie kind of fell into this business starting it from scratch, having no idea where it would lead them but so far the ride has been fun but not without its ups and downs along the way. “We are true manufactures, we love to be creative but we stay within the boundaries that we have set; that is, every product we produce must be 100% Natural,” says Julie. Natural Pet Treats Australia manufacturers of the Loyalty Pet Treats brand offer the discriminating pet owners the best of the best in pet treats for their dogs and cats. “There is a lot of dishonesty in this industry and we are trying to raise the bar on this. The biggest battle in the pet treat industry is dealing with
cheap; inferior and imported products. Poor labelling creates an unfair playing field. We list exactly what is in each product, without hiding ingredients. Our guarantee is that we are an 100% Australian manufacturer & everything we sell is made by us. A claim not many manufacturers, distributors or wholesalers can make,” says David. Unlike many pet treats which cook the nutritional value out their foods, Natural Pet Treats Australia uses an exclusive refrigeration process. They take the highest quality raw product and process it through a low temperature refrigeration dehydration procedure that does not denature the natural raw product whilst drying, and keeping all the taste and aroma that protein loving cats and dogs crave. This process virtually leaves all the natural aroma, Omega 3 fatty acids, enzymes and nutritional value of the original fresh products to promote pet health. The result is a tasty, virtually fatfree, highly nutritious pet treat. There are no artificial colourings, additives or preservatives used, ever.
They say, “For the fussy pets, we are the answer, we have heard so many times how pet owners, dogs or cats won’t eat treats and how fussy they are, but we have owners who now have been converted.” They were the first pet treat manufacturing company to dry the original tuna & whole green Lipped mussels; they have always tried to be innovative and will continue to be innovative and natural. “We will in the very near future be releasing a first of its kind 100% natural probiotic pet treat, so keep an eye on our online store for the release of this product in a few months.” Online store www.loyaltypettreats. com.au or www.nptaustralia.com.

Up close and
personal I By Mary-Lou Stephens
t’s the little things. The little things that make a day gloomy. The little things that brighten it again. The rainbow in the grey and drizzly clouds. Clean sheets to slide into after a tiring day. The dog leaning in for a pat, eyes full of love, even though you know she’s just dug up the silverbeet. Again. Many little annoying things throughout the day can make it seem as though the world is against us. One annoying incident can be ignored. Two and we might become irritable. Three and that’s it, we know that everyone and everything is out to get us. The best advice I’ve been given in these situations is not to take it personally. Because it’s not personal. It just is. Once we take something personally though, everything becomes loaded with meaning, with emotion, and with blame and resentment. Don’t you feel tired just thinking about it? Nurture your mind, reclaim your energy and your smile by not taking stuff personally. No one’s out to get you, and even if they are, it has nothing to do with you and everything to do them. So no matter what’s happened, it’s not personal. Instead of fretting about those little things that don’t mean anything anyway, why not spend some time getting personal? If you stop taking things
with
YOU!
personally you’ll have more time to spend with yourself and with other people. Take some time out to breathe, to stretch, to skip, to smile. One of the quickest ways to get personal with yourself is with meditation. If you want to find out what you’re really thinking, try to stop thinking! But all the experts agree as little as ten minutes of meditation a day can make a huge difference to all kinds of health and emotional issues. Nurture your soul with a little meditation. There are some who think that the answer to all of life’s problems is a nice cup of tea. Whether it’s the extended process of brewing up a spicy chai on a cool winter’s night, or simply boiling the kettle for a quick and simple green tea, the whole process is imbued with anticipation and delight. And the end result is a sip, a sigh, a smack of the lips. The little things that add up to an experience. A small experience that’s true, just a little thing, and the easiest way to nurture body, mind and soul. Mary-Lou Stephens is the author of Sex, Drugs and Meditation, a memoir.
