How are your New Year’s resolutions going? If you are over 40 years of age, how many times in your life have you been in and out of shape? How would it feel to just BE in shape?

In an age when we’ve got access to more information than ever, we also have more people out of shape and with chronic health problems. How can that be? Well, our modern environment is definitely not helping, but we also have a lot of misinformation flying around. Let’s look at three simple and effective ways for getting back into shape.

1. Positive mindset – it’s important to work on your mindset to help establish healthy habits, build resilience and keep you on the path to your vision of optimal health. Activities like meditation, practising gratitude and affirmations can help build a positive mindset. One of my client’s, Helen, found that changing her mindset was just what she needed to get herself out of a weight-loss plateau. How you think can be just as important as how you care for your body physically.

2. Optimised nutrition – we are all unique, and the best eating plan for one person may be very different from someone else’s. To get into the best shape your nutrition needs to be optimised to your unique circumstances, preferences, age, gender, health conditions and health goals. Helen included an extra serve of green vegetables, fruit and good fats from avocados, flaxseeds and walnuts each day.

3. Functional fitness – your exercise and fitness program needs to address your health goals, not be some cookiecutter approach that increases the risk of poor results and injury. If your goal is increased stamina and flexibility, then we work on that. I’ve teamed up with a very experienced exercise scientist who is really supportive and great at motivating and keeping you accountable to achieve your goal.

These three steps have a synergistic effect when included regularly and will help you evolve to achieve your mind, body and life goals. These steps are simple but not easy. Many of my clients seek me out to help them understand how the latest science and research is relevant to them personally. I have teamed up with a master personal trainer to offer SYNERGY: a mind, body and life transformation.
