W

elcome to our first edition back for 2014!! I have really enjoyed some ‘relax time’ over the festive season and feel very excited about the ‘newness’ of the year. During my time off, I reflected on many things including why I created this magazine and my great love affair with holistic wellbeing over the last fifteen years. I came up with a few interesting insights: firstly, it’s a joy to create a forum and share a variety of perspectives and collective wisdom, to inspire people to know it’s possible to create what their hearts desire. Change can and does occur (providing a person is prepared for what that entails and ready to be who they really are in more moments). There is no ‘one size fits all approach’ or single panacea for everything as we are all unique, so presenting different perspectives in this magazine is part of this realisation. We can just treat symptoms or just look at one aspect of ourselves or one aspect of our lifestyle but addressing the ‘whole

picture’ and unlocking the answers within ourselves, creates an empowering and dynamic way to heal and live life. I am honoured that you continue to be part of the picture we are painting together. Around the middle of this year we celebrate our 5th Birthday and I will also be turning 40 in November so I’m looking forward to connecting with you in ‘3D’ at all the ‘connect-up’ events over the next year. In the meantime, check out what’s new in the mag: ‘Holistic Kids and Parents’, ‘Move Your Body’ and ‘Outdoor Bliss’ features. Enjoy the time to read and be! T

he nutmeg tree is native to the Banda Islands which lie off the coast of Indonesia and it has two important spices that derive from it: Nutmeg and Mace. Mace is the bright red spidery membrane that covers the nutmeg seed but it doesn’t stay red forever. Due to oxidisation it quickly turns a dark reddish brown and when totally dried and ground, is still darker than ground nutmeg. Generally speaking, Mace is used more in savoury dishes as the taste is quite delicate and isn’t as sweet as nutmeg. You may have heard the term Blade Mace or seen a recipe that required it? This is just the whole dried Mace membrane – or the casing – before it has been ground down. Soups and casseroles usually use Blade Mace. Mace spice is not to be confused with Mace spray – they are not related in any way.

HERE IS A RECIPE FROM OUR RECENT TRIP TO RAJAHS AYURVEDIC RETREAT IN SOUTH INDIA. BEETROOT IS A WONDERFUL BLOOD TONIC AND BLOOD BUILDER. IN AYURVEDA BEETS ARE USED IN COOKING OR RAITA AND SALADS FOR THEIR SWEET, COOLING QUALITIES. WHEN PREPARED WITH CORIANDER THEY MAKE A LOVELY SUMMER DISH. Ingredients: 2 large fresh beetroots (diced into small pieces) 1 large potato (diced into small size pieces) 1 large tomato (diced) 1 tbsp sunflower oil 1 inch fresh grated ginger ½ tsp asafoetida powder (or 1 large onion and 2 cloves of garlic chopped) 1 tsp cumin seeds ½ tsp turmeric powder ½ tsp coriander powder ½ cup coconut milk 1 tsp garam masala Salt to taste Method: In a pan fry cumin seeds, grated ginger, asafoetida and tomato in the sunflower oil.

Add the turmeric, coriander and garam masala powders. Add the diced beetroot, potato and salt. Cook with the lid on. Add a little water if needed. Add the coconut cream toward the end of the cooking process. Serve with a fresh chapati or rice.

Raw and Real WORDS LUCY WALTER

W

ith the New Year in full swing, it’s a wonderful time to reflect on what “holistic” really means to me. The Webster dictionary defines holistic as “relating to or concerned with complete systems rather than with individual parts”. Applying this principle, I always try to consider not only my well being, but others as well, after all when you break it down, I am just one small part of a large, magnificent and complex system. What are the implications of my actions on the planet, animals and other people? I will never eat anything that has caused pain or stress to animals, so that’s a no brainer for me. I grow as much food as I can, I always buy organic and locally as much as possible. I choose to keep my attitude as uplifted as possible, I manage my health responsibly and limit the amount of television I watch, (unless it’s a side splitting comedy or a great documentary). Holistic living is all encompassing and I strive to improve and educate myself more every day. To me education is the key to living a more holistic life, which is the reason we originally started Kind Living Café in Maleny and now run the Raw Food Institute of Australia…the more we know, the more we can improve. It is too easy to judge what others are doing, but what if they truly are doing the best they can with what they know? I believe food choices are definitely one of the best places to start when embarking on a more holistic lifestyle. Here’s a recipe we used to serve at the café. It was one of the most popular dishes we had with kids and adults alike, and is still one of my favorites. Served with a fresh salad, it is a balanced and complete meal.

Cheesy Linguini Ingredients: 2 cups raw cashews soaked overnight 1 tbsp lemon juice 2 tsp oregano dried 2 tsp rosemary dried 1 tsp salt

2 cups water 1 tsp ground black pepper 1 / 3 cup olive oil ½ cup nutritional yeast 2 medium zucchinis

Method: Blend cashews, lemon juice, oregano, rosemary, salt, pepper and water in a high speed blender thoroughly until creamy. Put blended mix in a large bowl and gently mix in Bragg’s liquid amino acids (if you don’t want to use this product, you can replace with an organic tamari sauce), olive oil and nutritional yeast. Mix thoroughly and set aside. Using a spiralizer or julienne peeler make noodles from the zucchinis and gently mix into the sauce (we sometimes used kelp noodles at the café, great source of iodine if you can get them). Almond and Date Biscuits RECIPE THE ORGANIC SISTERS

Makes 10-12 Ingredients: 2 cups almond meal 1 tsp of gluten-free baking powder ¼ cup coconut oil 2 tbsp of organic maple syrup or raw honey A handful of chopped dried dates Method: 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. 2. Mix together the almond meal and baking powder in a medium bowl. 3. Then pour the coconut oil and maple syrup into the mixture and stir again until well combined. 4. Stir through the chopped dates.

S

o, what exactly does that mean? How can you make 2014 your healthiest and happiest year ever?! Here are my five key areas to focus on. Follow these and you’ll find the rest will flow. Step 1: LISTEN TO YOUR HEART Stop! Yes, that’s right… Stop! Stop and think about what you want for 2014. Give yourself permission to stop, breath… and just be. Find a favourite spot that you feel peaceful in, perhaps somewhere in nature or your favourite corner of the garden (I even find flying/travel time great for this) and calmly sit and breath slowly. Connect with your heart and listen to what really makes it sing and what brings a smile to your face. Sit with it. Breath into it. Be patient. It may take awhile to clear the clutter from your mind especially if you’re not used to being still. It may take awhile. And that’s okay! If you find yourself lost in mind ‘chatter’, refocus on your breath. Then grab pen and paper and begin to write. Write anything that comes forward. Don’t ‘think’ too much, just let the process happen. You might be surprised at what comes forward and lands on the page in front of you. Let it take as long as it needs to. Don’t rush it and please don’t think about your ‘to do’ list. It

can all wait. Remember, enlightenment (although aiming more for clarity here), doesn’t come from being busy, it comes from being still. It allows you to connect to your inner wisdom, to the energy of Mother Earth and the infinite Universe. This should help provide you with some clarity about what your heart desires for 2014. Keep repeating this practice as often as needed. Weekly works well. Step 2: FOOD AS ENERGY I am passionate about food and cooking, having been a chef and growing up in restaurants, however I combine that with my passion for striving to live a disease-free life and being conscious of my food choices on the health of the planet. So, I stick to an 80/20 rule (approximately – no exact calculations here!). 80% of the time I eat for my physical health which means lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, smaller amounts of ancient grains, meats, eggs, nuts and seeds, keeping it free range and organic where possible. The other 20% allows me to then indulge in a freshly baked organic sourdough baguette with some French butter (just a ‘thing’ I have) or whatever my heart tells me to enjoy, especially when it’s been made with love and care, which is great for the soul!

Step 3: MOVE! Find an activity that you love and go do it! If you hate the gym, don’t sign up – you won’t go more than a month. Experiment. There’s yoga, running, brisk walking, kayaking, surfing, paddle boarding, martial arts, dancing… etc. You don’t need to be a ‘gym junkie’ to be fit and healthy. In fact, most people that have lived long, healthy and active lives have been huge walkers, averaging around 4km per day. Step 4: THINK ABOUT DETOXING If you’ve had a busy holiday period, think about starting the year with a bit of a detox to reset the body and get it ready for the best year it’s ever had! There are many detoxification programs around, so do your research and ask lots of questions… or check out my Real Food 12-day Program on the website, but which ever one you choose, it’s a great way to reboot the system and eliminate the build-up of toxins in the body that can lead to disease and lethargy. Beat the ‘Bloat’? WORDS JOANNE THAM, NUTRITION AND FOOD TECHNOLOGIST FOR MORLIFE

P

eople unaware of their sensitivity towards gluten may not be enjoying life to the fullest, as they are dragged down by the negative implications this allergen has on both health and their lifestyle. Gluten intolerant individuals generally experience bloatedness, bowel discomfort and occasionally feel gaseous. In extreme cases, this can cause chronic inflammation of the intestine, an autoimmune reaction experienced by those suffering from coeliac disease (CD). These symptoms are the body’s natural way of telling you it is unwell as it cannot break down the gluten generally found in wheat and other grains. The food industry has been making an effort to cater their products for health conscious individuals, coeliac disease sufferers, or those on a gluten-free diet. Take a walk through any supermarket, health food store or dining bistro these days and you’re bound to discover a selected assortment of glutenfree, wheat-free products, ranging from cakes to breads and pastries, on the menu. Whilst you might love the wide variety of gluten-free products available on the market, you may not be completely pleased at the possibly ‘vitaminfree’ or ‘nutrient-free’ composition that is hidden in these foods.

Whole grains are an essential source of proper nourishment, including essential nutrients such as fibre, vitamin E, B group vitamins, proteins and a whole lot more. Unfortunately, the removal of wheat to ensure foods are gluten free, also eradicates key forms of nutrition present in the food. A recent study on CD sufferers and those on a gluten-free diet discovered that many test subjects were deficient in fibre, folate, niacin and vitamin B12. In addition to lacking nutrients, those following a strict ‘gluten-free diet’ were not necessarily reaching their goals of a healthy body. Furthermore, many gluten-free products contain additives like gums, corn starch or added sugar and fat to mimic the mouth feel and texture that wheat contributes. So don’t concern yourself with the amount of calories being added alone, take a good look at the ingredients being introduced into your body too! Select foods that are high in fibre and Omega-3 content such as ancient grains like Amaranth and Quinoa and super foods like chia seeds and goji berries. These wholesome foods have shown to improve digestion creating a happy gut and may also improve your sensitivity towards gluten. Don’t forget to include lots of fresh vegetables and fruits as your natural nutrition source!

Are you stressed, fatigued and unmotivated? Could your digestive system be making you unhappy? Could you solve your happiness puzzle with these missing puzzle pieces? Could it be bacteria? Researchers at McMaster University have supportive evidence that bacteria residing in the gut influence brain chemistry and behaviour. When there was a change in the gut flora of the test subjects increased anxiety and behaviour change was noted. For years these bacterias have been seen to be harmless, but the negative impact of specific strains of bacteria on the brain are documented. Pathogenic bacteria have the potential to cause havoc on your digestive system and indirectly may cause Serotonin to drop. Serotonin is your happy, relaxing neurotransmitter. Not many people are aware that it is predominantly made in the gut. Functional bacteria (the good guys) are often overlooked, they assist in breaking down your food and keeping your gut healthy.

What about heavy metals? Do you have amalgam dental fillings? Have you worked in the mines? Or in close contact with metals such as an electrician using copper wiring? Do you use copper cookware? Or drink from copper pipes? Heavy metals are linked to depression, fatigue, erratic moods, digestive problems and many other neurologic issues. HRT and use of the pill can cause copper to increase – this is because of the high levels of oestrogen, the likely symptoms could be unexplained headaches, PMS, depression and mood swings. Heavy metals should always be tested.

Do I have the condition pyroluria? A very strange word, I know, maybe that is why so many people haven’t heard of it? Pyroluria is a genetically determined metabolic condition. If you have this condition your demand for certain nutrients (particularly B6 and zinc) is high. These two nutrients are essential for neurotransmitter production, such as serotonin and dopamine. Pyrolurics are more likely to suffer with depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, autism, alcoholism, strong fatigue, temper outbursts, IBS, joint pain, memory loss, or low stress tolerance.

What about your nutrient absorption? Most people who come to the clinic eat a fairly good diet, some exceptional! But they still feel unhealthy. Many triggers such as stress, food intolerances, bacterial overgrowth and hormone imbalance may result in poor nutrient absorption, so no matter how clean your diet is you may not be getting the full reward until it is corrected. Clinically there is testing to determine the extent of damage to the gut lining.

Serves 4 adults as a main dish Ingredients for salad: 1 cup uncooked quinoa 2 spring onion shoots, finely chopped 1 large red capsicum, diced 2 medium carrots, grated 2 medium tomatoes, diced 1 Lebanese cucumber (or equivalent of another variety) 2 cobs of corn, kernels removed from cob (I use the corn raw, but you can steam or boil it first) 1 can of black beans (or kidney beans), drained of liquid and rinsed A small bunch of coriander (or parsley if you prefer), roughly chopped Avocado or home-made guacamole

Organic plain corn chips for serving (optional) Ingredients for dressing: 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 3 tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice 2 tsp coriander powder 2 tsp cumin powder 2 tsp smoked paprika (or sweet paprika if you don’t have smoked) 1 tsp garlic powder (optional) A couple of pinches of hot chilli powder (optional) ¼ tsp finely ground sea salt A few grinds of peppercorns 2 tbsp raw honey (or rice malt syrup)

Method: • Thoroughly rinse the quinoa. • Cover the quinoa with 3 cups of water and simmer until liquid is just absorbed. • Cool the quinoa to room temperature or in the fridge if you’re making it ahead of time. • In a large serving bowl, mix the quinoa and all the salad ingredients except the avocado/guacamole. • For the dressing, place all ingredients in a jar with the lid secured tightly and shake until totally combined. • Pour dressing over salad, stir well and serve immediately topped with freshly diced avocado or guacamole. • Serve with a handful of organic plain corn chips if desired. Working with the Whole Person INTERVIEW WITH PETREA KING | WORDS KAY STROUD

PUT SIMPLY, THE STANDARD PRESCRIBED WAY OF TREATING DISEASE NEEDS TO BE REVIEWED AND REWORKED. THIS WAS THE MESSAGE THAT PETREA KING AND MANY OTHER HEALTH PRACTITIONERS CONVEYED AT THE AIMA 19TH INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE CONFERENCE HELD AT THE GOLD COAST LATE LAST YEAR.

F

ollowing her workshop, King agreed to talk with me about her work and what she sees as the future of healthcare in Australia. A qualified naturopath, herbalist, clinical hypnotherapist, yoga and meditation teacher, author, founder and CEO of the Quest for Life Foundation, she has been instrumental in healing individuals and communities after tragedies such as the Queensland floods and is regularly sought after as a counsellor and commentator on integrative therapies on ABC Radio. “The whole relatively new science of epigenetics shows us that we have to move from treating diseases to treating people,” King explained. “I think we’re at a time where we have to take on board the whole person … which encompasses their story, what they’ve made of their story, as well as obviously their nutrition, exercise and sleep, and all of these very practical things.” She went on to say, “It’s something I’ve been puzzling over for many years. Will our health system evolve into a more compassionate person-centred holistic environment or will it collapse… and out of the ashes will come a more humane and integrated way of treating people?” Strong words from the recipient 16

of numerous awards including the Centenary Medal and the Advance Australia Award, as well as being amongst the nominees for Australian of the Year each year since 2003. To understand her story, we need to go back 30 years when she experienced a life-saving event. King was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia and given months to live. “I don’t know why I didn’t die, except that I do know that I healed a lot of the things that caused me great distress and pain,” she shared with me. Anguishing alone in a cave in Italy, “For the first time I integrated a lot of the trauma that had happened in the past and forgiveness was a huge part of that integration. The more peace I found, the more strength I found”. Since then, she’s seen many other people’s life-threatening diseases spontaneously go into remission as they find a sense of connectedness to their innate spirituality, regain control over their responses to life and recommit to living. From childhood years spent in hospital and extremely difficult times living with a brother who had mental health issues and eventually suicided, to failed marriages and then her spontaneous remission of leukaemia, King speaks from her own experience when she says that “medical practitioners can help patients to a degree with drugs and surgery, but what is always healing is compassion.” She explains, “I’ve been treated by many people and felt worse for the treatment; and healed by many people who didn’t treat me for the ailment but just shared that loving touch – whether by word, or a moment of compassion, or care, or concern.”

We agreed that often semantics are a hindrance to understanding our spiritual nature. Some terms she used were: consciousness, soul, spirit, life, being and energy. For many, health has a deeply spiritual element and is tied to a relationship we each have with the divine consciousness. We agreed that recognition of our true selfhood brings both healing and “the peace that passes all understanding.” Petrea King is constantly refining words and concepts so they’re readily accessible and simple for everyone, as she works in disparate arenas such as the corporate world, the backblocks of Queensland after natural disasters and even in jails. “There’s much greater openness now to having conversations about the invisible world because there’s a realisation, especially in quantum physics, that the visible world isn’t as it seems.” Mary Baker Eddy, another woman whose own miraculous healing caused her to research the powerful link between spirituality, consciousness and health,

also took an unconventional approach. In the 19th Century, she led the way in establishing a system of health care, still practised today, based on love, inspiration from a book of great wisdom, the Bible, and the realisation of our unity with the divine consciousness.

emotionally aware of what’s going on within yourself in the care you’re extending to another is very fertile ground for our own growth in wisdom, compassion and insight, which are all assets so valuable in the health arena.” King doesn’t think of herself as a healer, but as providing an environment where people might find healing. I asked her what drives her passion for Quest for Life. “When you nearly die and then you don’t, you know that happiness is not about the ‘stuff’ of life. What gives me joy is seeing people move from fear and anxiety, panic and distress to feeling empowered and capable and able to embrace whatever the challenge is they have and make meaning of it. I think when you liberate yourself from these distressing feelings, you’re actually changing your physiology at quite a profound, indeed epigenetic level.” She was offered help when she was at her lowest point, and since then has always wanted to provide a safe haven where people could come and unburden themselves. The Quest for Life Centre now conducts retreats where people find a listening and skilful heart that gives very practical skills and strategies so people can reclaim their life, regardless of whatever their suffering might be. Rather than adopting a “grin and bear it attitude” amidst our own mental and physical suffering, we may all need to adopt this new/old approach of seeking out sanctuaries in order to heal. What needs to change in today’s health care system? King reiterates: “We have to move from treating diseases to treating people. We’re bringing habitual ways of thinking and doing things when we need to bring compassion, creativity, knowledge and love to the moment.” There is more than a little evidence that the holistic and integrative health movement, with professionals like Petrea King’s input, is quietly helping our health system to evolve into a more compassionate person-centred, holistic environment. y definition holism is the theory that all living matter is made up of living unified wholes that are greater than the simple sum of their parts; holistic healthcare is the field in which the “whole person” is focused on, not just the malady or symptom itself. As a chiropractor I love this principle! Although termed differently this is the basis of what we do and why we do it. Chiropractors have forever worked under the premise that a life energy or Innate Intelligence that created us governs everybody. Innate intelligence is the intelligence wired into you that controls and regulates every single act in your body. Every single chemical reaction, every tissue formation, and every germ that is fought off is controlled and coordinated by this innate intelligence; it is what transformed you from 2 cells into 60 trillion cells with all sorts of highly complex organs, muscles and bone structures. Although innate intelligence is

in every cell of your body, it has a central headquarters in your brain and spinal cord. Your nervous system is the communication network for innate intelligence. The brain and spinal cord sends and receives signals from the nerves out in the body. It is vitally important for the body parts to always remain plugged into the innate intelligence network so that they can be properly governed as they are reforming and healing from injuries, and as they are performing their specific tasks. If a body part loses communication with that network, it will begin to lose its proper function, it will become weaker, and more susceptible to breakdown because it isn’t healing and reforming properly. That information pathway travels from the brain to the spinal cord, then out a small space between two vertebrae in the form of a nerve which takes the signal all the way to its destination. If that network is disrupted at any point along its path, the signal will be distorted or even lost. This results in developing symptoms.

The #1 most common way that those signals are disrupted is through misalignments in the spine. The reason why so many people are helped with problems like muscle tension and weakness, digestive problems, and even asthma is because through specific Chiropractic adjustments it removes the interference in the communication network and allows the signals of innate intelligence to flow from your brain to the body, thus allowing it to properly develop, heal, and restore function. Shaping Up?

hat shape comes to mind when you first think of ‘wholeness’? For me, it would be the circle. Complete, all encompassing and never ending with its comforting closed curve. But of course there are many associated shapes. Take the Triad of Health for instance, a triangle which makes it easy for us to visualise what kind of shape (literally) we are in. The three sides of the triangle (Emotional/Spiritual – Nutritional/ Chemical – Physical/Structural) when in balance depict a healthy, whole being. So what type of triangle are you? A balanced equilateral?… or perhaps, like those of us who aren’t quite perfect yet… a little obtuse? There is no doubt that an imbalance of any shape (caused by out of balance lifestyle choices) will be reflected in our bodies and take its toll on our lives in some form. However, good news is that once we become conscious, it can be easy and empowering to regain a healthy balance. For example, a simple change in our thoughts or diet can

create a change in our chemical balance, adjusting our cellular composition immediately! Just think about it… Our WHOLE BEING is the sum total of trillions of cells. In fact, I realised that a HEALTHY cell is a neat representation of a “Circle of Wholeness” in itself! Our Cells are Us! As the makeup of our body’s cells IS directly affected by what we intake: Insufficient nutrients = Dis-eased cells Our body’s cells ARE directly affected by not drinking enough water. Insufficient hydration = Deformed cells Our body’s cells ARE directly affected by poor breathing. Insufficient oxygenation = Starving cells (and also feeds cancers) Our body’s cells ARE directly affected by what we think. Toxic thoughts = Toxic cells And these are just the fundamentals of our existence… food, water, oxygen and thoughts, that perhaps aren’t given enough credit in the creation of our wholeness during our busy everyday life. So, if we DON’T want to be Diseased, Deformed, Starving and Toxic, and if

we DO want to enjoy Good Health, Abundant Life Energy and Inner peace as well as the other benefits of “BEING WHOLE”, it makes sense that it begins with us choosing to respect ourselves as a “WHOLE BEING” in the big picture. Living with purpose and intention also create a sense of wholeness, and this is where the setting and achieving of goals is beneficial, allowing us to create our heart’s desire and maintain a vibration that will support, connect and nourish on all levels. By ensuring that our own specific goals are in alignment with our purpose and intention, it helps to build strong foundations and sustainable long term life energy. re you working hard on your determination by setting your goals and doing everything you can to create something different this New Year? January 1st can be a little like judgement day. Self-judgment day, that is. It’s the time of year where we reflect on the year just gone – what we did right, what we did wrong, what we learned, where we spent too much money, how we didn’t get fit, how much weight we gained and how much weight we didn’t lose. Creating our lives from judgment and wrongness of ourselves, does little other than stick us in our creative capacities. That includes my humanity. When we leave out bits and pieces of our personality and deny our humanity, we encounter problems on this journey of life. These denied pieces only nag, haunt and sabotage us until we listen. There’s our lighter side and there’s our darker side. Everything we say and do affects everyone else. In some way, we are all powerful beings. So, we are a force to be reckoned with whether we like it or not. But how do we find wholeness? Well, we all have a light side. Even if we don’t draw from it that much, it’s still there, waiting in the shadows of our

mind. When we turn our light on and allow ourselves to shine, we light up. This creates more healing and health than we could imagine. Saying yes to our light side means we say a big yes for the healing of the world around us as well as ourselves. We are not ‘above it all’ either and we all have a dark side. To think we don’t, is simply a denial of the truth about what it means to be human. The trick is to acknowledge and extract the gems like a Gnome who chips away at coal to find the diamonds. As we embrace our higher vibrations, let’s include the lower vibrations too. Once we’ve acknowledged these parts of ourselves and found their gift, we transform them. They become our allies, rather than adversaries. Of course there is a difference between being a witness to our humanity and indulging it. What if we really paid attention to what the parts of our personality need and strive to create

balance within our inner sanctum? Learning to be kind to ourselves and being our own best friend means we become easier to live and work with. When we accept our inner mirror, our relationships benefit and we are able to transform them without struggle and pain. If you don’t fully know who you are in this picture, don’t worry. Treat it like an adventure. I’ve made it mine and in doing so it has assisted me and countless others. Another benefit of truly realising all of who we are is the ability to count our blessings. When we awaken from blindness and denial, we see all our gifts. This opens the door to more abundance and more of what we want rather than what we don’t. In order to achieve freedom and a sense of wholeness, let’s take ownership of the full spectrum of our colourful humanity. raditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been developed and practised in China for over 2000 years. TCM is concerned with functions that regulate digestion, breathing, ageing, health and wellbeing. Harmonious interaction between internal functions and external forces brings health and harmony to the body. Tui na is a hands-on treatment that utilises Chinese Taoist and martial arts principles to bring the eight principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine into balance. The eight principles of TCM are: Yin/ Yang; Hot/Cold; Deficient/Replete and Superficial/Internal. By identifying the origins and directions of disharmony, the TCM practitioner aims to treat not just the symptoms of disease but address the origins and pathological indicators (continuing or feeding forces) of dis-ease in the body. Tui na as a manipulative therapy is often used in conjunction with acupuncture, moxibustion, fire cupping, Chinese herbalism, t’ai chi and qigong. Mobilisation and manipulation by the physical Tui na therapist is used to

diagnose and treat soft tissue and joints to modulate pain; increase range of motion; reduce soft tissue inflammation; improve tissue repair, extension and flexibility; facilitate movement; improve function and induce relaxation. T’ai chi ch’uan or taijiquan is an internal Chinese martial art used for defence and health including longevity, balance and psychological health. Focusing the mind solely on movement of the body in T’ai chi and qigong helps to bring about mental calm, acuity and clarity, bringing health benefits and stress management. This allows the body the space to heal itself. Aspects of TCM are taught to advanced t’ai chi ch’uan students in some traditional schools. Many East Asian martial arts schools also teach Tui na to their advanced students for the treatment and management of injury and pain due to training. In modern times Tui na contains specialised treatments for infants, adults, orthopaedics, traumatology, cosmetology, rehabilitation, sports medicine and other therapies. Zheng Gu Shui is a sports liniment commonly

used in conjunction with Tui na. Created by a Chinese master herbalist over 500 years ago, the specialised fiery liniment is used in Tui na to promote the healing of fractures and broken bones along with connective tissue and muscle / joint strain and tears. Tui na is directed to stimulate the flow of chi – vital energy – in the body,and has been shown to assist in the treatment of: Chronic Fatigue, Menstrual Cramps, Carpel Tunnel, Fibromyalgia and Cervical Spondylosis, among other conditions. Tui na can assist in the treatment of: arthritis, back and neck pain, joint pain, sciatica, headaches, constipation, stress, anxiety, insomnia, migraine, muscle spasms, musculoskeletal problems and alleviate pain and fatigue. whether you have any), not letting love into your life, stuck in blame, excuses, ‘gonna do it’ patterns, feeling heavy, thinking your stresses or problems are because of outside influences rather than coming from inside of you, have a lack of time, are fighting at home with your partner and/or children as well as many other daily ‘symptoms’. Gorgeous souls, if any of this is still happening to you and you have tried many different things – dig deeper and become aware of what is happening within YOU. It is in YOU somewhere and can be found if you are willing. Once you gather the right associated awareness, and make a different choice of belief, your reality WILL change! Get back to basics! Eat nutritional food, drink as much water as you can, exercise your body, share and be vulnerable with what is really happening inside you with someone who loves YOU, all of YOU, especially enough to make you accountable! Simply saying… EVERYTHING is a reflection of how you treat your body! Focus on getting the basics consistent everyday in an easy and happy way. Make them part of your day, just like showering! If you

love awareness and personal growth, then choosing to work on anything and everything that comes up in the way of you being consistent in applying the basics, will fast track everything. This will create huge shifts in your reality. It will all come back to this. Once the basics are consistently met… Now is the time to look within for your direction forward and FEEL! What things excite your heart, create you to smile and trust, open you up to the infinite being you are with endless potential? How can your environment reflect this? How can you LOVE living in an environment, one that is so great and supportive you easily maintain the basics? In fact, how do YOU create the environment to do all the work around you, for you? Are you aware of what you authentically want your environment to look like, or is that a conditioned belief as well? Is it an extravagant home, a big bank account, a flash car, a successful business, or many well-to-do VIP social outings? It could be?!?! What’s the magic formula here? The magic formula to look for here is LOVE! Once you can master the basics, and FEEL love and know it is reflected around you, everything gets easy.

Then the things that truly excite YOUR heart will start to find YOU! Your journey will be all it needs to be, in the right moments and the perfect timing. You will see synchronicity everyday happening in support of YOU. You will easily maintain your basics; enjoy the feeling of LOVE and relish in the many adventures and experiences that continually find you. When life turns a little (or a lot) sideways you will be able to look within, remember all the wonderful conscious techniques you have learned throughout your journey, explore, gather insight and awareness, grow a little wiser from it, feel grateful, and move forward into more of YOU. It’s up to YOU! There are so many amazing modalities, books, directions, suggestions, conscious leaders with many great ideas and advice etc; both western and eastern. Find the ones that excite your heart and create changes in your realities. Look to people that are authentically living a life you value. You were the easiest to deliver and the hardest to raise!” was my mum’s one-liner used to sum up the adventure of having me as a child. Every year on my birthday, she would call me and tell me the story of the black haired baby, the unstoppable one that almost used the elevator at the hospital as the delivery room! She would tell me how my dad and she had prepared for my arrival in all the ways they knew possible. She had worked in the garden and was in great physical shape for my birth, as a second child they had more experience as parents, had read all the books, and how ready they thought they were for my arrival. She would chuckle then and say nothing had or could have truly prepared them for me. How many parents realise one is never truly ever prepared to be a parent? According to this reality, parents are supposed to be all knowing and have all of the answers at all times. How many children fit cookbook approaches,

global solutions, or answers provided by experts, friends, family members, and Google searches? Do any of them? I know that my parents discovered that I certainly didn’t! How many times are parents at a loss on how to handle certain topics and situations with their children? How many times does a parent judge what they are doing? Is it enough or is it not enough? Is it the right way or the wrong way? How many times do parents find their parenting skills being scrutinised by others? How much judgment do parents have and receive daily? Wow! Dads and mums, will you now let go of all that judgment? Can it be different? Yes!!!! Good news for parents everywhere! Having all of the answers is totally overrated! What if you never have to have another answer again? Answers do not move energy. They actually stop it. Answers are static, unmoving, and inflexible. Q: My children and I are fighting about their career. I was told that if I had a problem with my children it is actually me. How can that be? A: I receive this comment so often from parents and teachers. Yes there is a mirror image! This relates to quantum physics and the law of attraction. We have forgotten an innate wisdom that we are a hologram of everything and everyone. What we like or dislike in others is within us. We are all one. We are not separate and therefore cannot be separated or segregated. It comes back to basic science and mathematics; the way you see someone, something or an experience is perception only. It is seen the way you are at the present moment. As Einstein said “Imagination leads to reality. We are boxed in by the boundary conditions of our thinking.” Your perception of the outside world is really of yourself. Christine had grown up to

believe success was money, possessions and status from her father and she mirrored his belief to be accepted by him. Christine worked in the corporate world which was stressful, demanding with high expectations. She did not realise that she was creating the same for her two daughters, 15 and 19 years old. She was repulsed at her daughters attitudes of ‘whatever’ and ‘I don’t care’. She was defining their relaxed attitude and approach to life as lazy, failure and useless, especially as both of them wanted a career in sport and to raise children. Life is filled with illusions. The illusion is who is Christine really fighting with – her daughters or herself? By defining someone or something to a set being, limits them and you. In this case Christine was defining her children’s choices as failure. She was not aware that she felt like a failure and her heart’s desire was to work as a personal trainer.

Once Christine had this awareness she saw she was fighting with herself and core innate ability. Her daughters were her mirror image. If there is anything we wish to change in the child, we should first examine it and see whether it is not something that could be better to be changed in ourselves. When we see it outside ourselves, the first response is ‘thank you’ and then be open hearted to what the lesson is. Ultimately the universe has gifted all situations as learning lessons. You will have the opportunity to self realise your own lesson and answer. When we have no limits or expectations, the result is no disappointment. There is only peace and harmony. Y

our body is a masterpiece which is controlled and co-ordinated by your brain. The way your brain does this is by sending and receiving electrical impulses or messages along the nerves. These impulses must be in synchronisation for you to feel great and function great. Most of the nerves in your body either start or finish in the skull. They then travel down through a big hole in the base of your skull into the spinal canal, forming the spinal cord. Your canal should be straight from the front and have a healthy “C” shaped curve from the side. This alignment provides the ideal protection to the nerves. Sadly, poor posture, whiplash injuries, knocks, bumps and falls can injure the neck and can cause the spine to become misaligned. If you have a misalignment of the spine, this can alter the shape of the spinal canal, disturbing the nerves. These misalignments are known as ‘Subluxations’. New research conducted by Dr Jeb

McAviney (who is the clinical director of Sydney Scoliosis Clinic) found that patients who have lost the normal curve in the neck are 18 times more likely to suffer with headaches. There are many things that can cause headaches which come from the neck. • Pinched nerve. People often talk about a “Pinched nerve” which does happen but is actually quite rare. • Sprain of the joints or ligaments. • Strain of the muscles. • Disc injury. Although disc injuries are most common in the low back, neck disc injuries are particularly nasty. These conditions also commonly can lead to tension in the neck and even headaches and migraine. A study conducted at the Institute of Medical Biology at the University of Odense in Denmark showed that Chiropractic care reduced both the intensity and frequency of headaches. Patients had 69% less headaches and 36% decline in the intensity of their headaches (JMPT 1997).

Dr Wayne Wittingham, Chiropractor, PhD and researcher conducted several major studies with patients who were suffering with headaches and migraines. One study was a double blind study with a crossover aspect. This means the patients received eight weeks of treatment and eight weeks of a sham or fake treatment. Another group received the sham or fake treatment first then eight weeks of real Chiropractic treatment. This study not only showed that Chiropractic care reduces the severity, intensity and frequency of headaches and migraines, but because of the crossover aspect, it also showed that Chiropractic care actually prevented headaches and migraines occurring. I

think we can all recall at some point in our childhood the fascination we had with the discovery of water and the life it supports and holds. It was like exploring another world full of creatures and movement that were unexplainable to us and that made us wonder how all this is happening, where does this wonderful liquid come from, what’s going on in there? I remember playing for days on end in the local creek and dam and we would take off and maybe be back late for dinner full of stories of our latest discovery. So why are we drawn to water? Water is healing… it’s what we are born from and what we must have as the ultimate basic element to exist. This element of life has a great impact on our well being and our environment, to be mindfully conscious of how we incorporate and interact with water in our living spaces has a direct relationship on our wellbeing both physical, mental and spiritually. Falling water generates anions or negatively charged ions. There are lots

of anions found in the air of forests, around waterfalls and water features, and at the beach. When people come into contact with these sorts of environments, they feel refreshed as these negative ions actually help to alkalise our blood, stabilise our nerve system, reduce blood pressure and increase oxygen delivery to our cells. Anions are nearly non-existent in an office, where as there are up to 20000 particles/m³ found around waterfalls. To create a water feature that rings true to our DNA requires a creativity and a still mind that recognises the beauty of the natural chaos that you discover in the creeks and waterfalls of our still wild areas. Although never touched by hands, these wild creeks feel right, the rock placement is perfect, the way the water moves and falls is quite simply just right. This organised chaos we cannot really describe, it simply rings true with us on a primordial level, and it feels right to our senses and supports our well being. In the same way I like to

think we build liquid fire; a waterfall or creek will draw you in to a primordial place in the same way that quietly watching a camp fire burn does. No matter how dry our environment is, we will always want to live near water, it’s in our DNA. A living pond or waterfall is a perfect way to accomplish this. There are many ways to incorporate living water in your environment. They are multi-faceted; you can also grow edible aquatic plants in them. e may find ourselves caught on the merry-go-round of ‘to dos’ projecting most of our attention and energy outside of ourselves. While this may be very well intentioned, we humans seem very apt at martyring ourselves to all and sundry. In our misguided efforts to be ‘a good person’, ‘please everyone’ or ‘change the world’ we may feel miserable. Led by the fluctuations of the mind, fuelled by self-defeating and negative subconscious programs we often feel frustrated at perceived failure. M

any years ago I was headhunted to start up a new radio station in a major regional market. It was exciting, thrilling and ultimately exhausting. After almost a year I was at breaking point. After each frantic and demanding day I would crawl back to my small apartment to cry and eat ice-cream. The only thing I was capable of reading was junk mail; not much text, lots of pictures and the promise of happiness. Fortunately I had a wonderful mentor, he even looked a bit like Yoda. He suggested I read a particular book. I ordered a copy and when it arrived tossed the junk mail in the recycling bin and began to read. What I found within its pages changed my life. The Secrets of the Rainmaker by Chin-Ning Chiu is based on a story Carl Jung used to tell about the power of miracles. In this story a village has been in drought for many years. The people have tried everything but the drought

remains crippling. Finally they call upon a renowned Rainmaker from afar. The Rainmaker arrives, pitches his tent and disappears inside it for four days. On the fifth day the rain begins to fall. When the villagers ask him how he’d achieved such a miracle he answers that he didn’t do anything. When he arrived he noticed that the village was not in harmony with heaven. He spent four days inside his tent putting himself in harmony with the Divine. Then the rain came. To say I was surprised by what I read is an understatement. I was expecting a book about getting ahead, cramming more into each day and beating my opponents. Instead I devoured a book about surrender, ease and meditation. It spoke to my weary soul with words like, “When one is excessively busy, the heart is dead”. I set about reviving my heart and replenishing my soul. Day after day in the darkness of early morning, I

sat, breathed and gave my heart and mind a place to rest. I had tried many guided meditations before, in my time in Twelve Step programs recovering from a gaggle of addictions, but this was the first time I let my mind just be. I didn’t realise it at the time, but by spending this time in meditation and reflection I was slowing down enough to allow the angel of good fortune to catch up. It took a lot longer than the Rainmaker’s four days but it did happen. Miracles occurred, unexpected miracles that remain and continue to unfold to this day. And to this day I continue to meditate, allowing the angel of good fortune to catch up as often as possible. Forgiveness

– Six Steps To Not Drinking

I

n the last edition we explored the complexity of forgiving, and the need to not prematurely pretend “it’s all good,” or confuse forgiveness with permissiveness. As we discussed, forgiveness is not about being a human doormat. Forgiving is a process, and for major hurts it often takes time. The alternative path is neatly summed up in a statement often attributed to the Buddha, but which most likely came out of the ‘AA’ movement: “Not forgiving someone is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” The skill of forgiving is fundamental to good psychological health. What many people don’t realise is that it is also a wonderful opportunity for personal transformation. The better you get at forgiving others = the better you become at forgiving yourself = the freer and happier you can be! Here are some of the core components to becoming a ‘grand master’ at forgiving: 1. Allow yourself to feel the emotions and pain of the perceived

transgression against you. Distracting yourself and repressing emotions only creates further difficulties later. 2. Look deeper! Does part of your reaction have roots in the past? Do you also need to forgive someone else in your childhood or even yourself? 3. Take ownership of your mind. Recognise that ultimately you are creating the negative emotions. Once fully felt, if the emotions of anger and resentment still keep returning it may be because you’ve developed a habit of thinking about what happened in a certain way. 4. Step into their shoes. Imagine how the other person has been hurt in the past. Remember that like you, the other person is also striving to be happy. Unfortunately how they’re going about trying to be happy has been distorted in an unhealthy way by their life story, suffering and limited awareness. 5. Expand your heart awareness. Focus on the image of yourself as a powerful, loving being able to make gracious, conscious choices. 6. When you are ready… choose.

When Planet Mercury goes backwards – what happens? WORDS RICHARD GILES

B

ack at the Greek Olympics in August 2004 there was a scandal involving athletes and the Olympic committee held an international press conference to deal with the issue. In the middle of the press conference all recording and communications equipment broke down and they went off the air. Embarrassing. What happened to do this? At the time Mercury, first planet from the Sun and traditional ruler of communications, was in a Retrograde motion phase (going backwards) and most things to do with communication tend to break down. Retrograde motion is based on visual appearances from the Earth – the planet doesn’t literally go backwards, but it appears to do so as the orbital period of every planet is different and as one speeds past the other there’s a visual effect of backwards motion from earth. What is Mercury in your chart? It’s about messages, reason, information, the mind, the intellect, communications, neighbours, siblings, short term travel,

intelligence and Wednesdays. Body parts – nervous system, breathing, the tongue, hands, co-ordination, sense of perception, memory, and the conscious mind. Typical events during a Mercury retrograde include strange weather, information relating to the distant past, old news coming back into print, technical (computers) and mechanical breakdowns and the ever popular communications stuff-ups. Mercury retrograde can also be used to reorganise data and files and reach back into one’s past to reconnect. Old creative material can be revived and reworked. But it’s not a good idea to make any major commitments during this period if they can be avoided. Typically some detail is overlooked and arises again when Mercury goes direct requiring revisions of your business. Entering into sales contracts and written agreements is best avoided. There is also what’s called the ‘Shadow Period’. The points where

Mercury stops marking the end and the beginning of the Shadow. The zodiac inside the Shadow zone is traversed three times by Mercury – forward, backward, and forward again. This back and forth motion is like our mental process during the period. We review and rethink, rehearse and replay. From time to time, inner dialogue is confused with our actual spoken words, so we think we’ve said something but we’ve only thought about saying it. Mercury takes 88 days to go around the Sun. So in one year it does four orbits and there are usually three retrograde periods in a year. In 2014 it will be from 7th February to 28th February (in Pisces and Aquarius). Then 7th June to 1st July (in Cancer and Gemini), and 5th October to 26th October (in Scorpio and Libra). Add a two-week shadow period before and after to these dates and you have a guide to not stuffing up communications. One third of the year is usually retrograded. So put the dates in your diary after you read this, especially if you run a business. You will then understand why they heard you wrong and be more careful with your words. What Can Horses Contribute to You and Your Life? WORDS VIV ADCOCK

A

horse owner recently emailed me asking if I could assist her and her horse with a “problem” that had been going on for six years. I asked the horse (in my head) what was going on for him and he communicated so much in a few seconds that I had to ask him to slow the information down so I could keep up! The main thing he showed me was that he felt that he couldn’t really trust anything or anyone. He was in a hyper-vigilant state, which made him nervous and jumpy. The owner was stuck in a trauma that they had been through. The energy of the event was so prevalent in the owner’s mind and body, the horse sensed it, and most times reacted to it by bolting, with the owner on his back. I asked him, “What are you facilitating?” He was surprised and relieved that I saw the situation from this angle. I acknowledged him for what he was doing to show the owner and didn’t conclude he was wrong. The “reaction” was his way of getting her to change what she was being when they rode. Horses have a space in their head of peace and awareness. I encouraged the

owner to practise being this space in her life, before she does anything with him and especially riding him. This way, he can sense she is relaxed. We also did other processing for both of them to clear what had been created. When I began doing some energetic bodywork with him, he was reluctant to let me in. He would let me and then stop. Somewhere in his Universe he knew this energy was assisting him, he breathed deeply and let me in a bit more, then a bit more and then he gave himself over to me. His eyes gently closed. WOW. He knew I had his back and that I was on the “look out” so he could relax, for the first time in a very long time. As I drove out of the property he turned and looked directly at me. A wave of gratitude rippled through my body, his thank-you was palpable. I also offered the owner a session of Access Consciousness Bars® and bodywork to exponentialise the session for them both. She told me a day later that she had a dream and got clearly what he was communicating. She commented how relaxed and light her body felt. RULES, RULES, RULES! WORDS FAITH WILD

D

on’t you get sick of hearing what we should and shouldn’t be doing with our dogs – what is right and what is wrong? Things like… You have to walk your dog every day; he shouldn’t sleep on the bed; you have to go to obedience classes; get a shock collar to stop barking; eat before your dog; walk in the door before he does; stick to a routine…show him who’s boss. The list is long and most of the time, impractical and useless. It just adds to the confusion of establishing a good and loving relationship with your dog. Too many rules get in the way. I am not saying that there should be no discipline, but it should be for the right reasons, done in the right way, and it should be conducive as to how a dog naturally learns. We shouldn’t put unrealistic

meaningless demands on our dogs. After all, they are our friends, our companions, and we should be able to laugh and cry and be silly with them. They are part of our family. We can lighten up about our dogs and their behaviour and it comes down to a personal choice whether or not he does things like sleep on the bed with you. I know so many people living on their own who have been advised not to have their dogs on their bed. I ask – Why not? If that’s what you want, just do it. I would not advise this if you had an out-of-control dominant type of dog because that could make him worse, but overall, most dogs are not like that, and sleeping on the bed with you won’t cause you problems. Everyone is different and every dog is different. So is every situation. One set of rules does not fit everyone. We all have different attitudes and different expectations. The point is that it is up to you to make rules which are reasonable and stick with them – just like kids – dogs actually love boundaries and once they know and understand them it makes life easier for everyone. The trick is to know what to do when the rules are challenged so it doesn’t escalate.

It is important not to over-react, or use force or physical reprimands. A lot of people still sin bin their dogs for bad behaviour which will remove the dog from the situation but will not teach the dog not to misbehave in the first place. I can assure you that your dog does not sit in the corner saying to himself – wow – I’ll never do that again. It’s so important to understand how they think and why they do the things they do. Then, it’s easy to communicate. Dogs amaze me constantly. We introduce them to our homes, treat them like they are little humans, confuse the heck out of them and still, somehow, they fit in and make us happy. With the holiday gastronomic affair over, it’s now time for people and pets to reassess their nutrition and lifestyle in order to stay healthy for the whole year! This is what holistic medicine is all about: YOU are what you eat or “what you do not excrete”. Preventing and treating dis-ease, as well as maintaining good health depends on a simple plan: what you put in and on your body, how much you exercise and how you eliminate toxins, as well as what you THINK (the latter referring to stress levels and endogenous hormones). Holistic treatment for you AND YOUR PETS is as easy as 1,2,3: 1. Diet 2. Exercise 3. Lifestyle 1. Obtain foods that contain natural antioxidants such as fresh vegetable pulp (vitamin A, C, E, spirulina, chlorella, turmeric), trace minerals (kelp) and essential fatty acids (cod liver, flax seed oil). Avoid diets which are known

Our foods are depleted in minerals due to the age of Australian soils and the present farming practice of only fertilising the soils with Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium (NPK). As a result we all need to supplement our diets daily if we are not eating produce that was grown on supplemented soil. Organic food is slightly higher in trace minerals. A natural, wholesome diet for our pets should include a diet rich in

minerals, antioxidants and raw, fresh enzyme materials. It should be free from preservatives, additives, colourants, and plastic packaging – the latter leaches xeno-oestrogens and are proinflammatory. 2. Exercise releases endorphins, which are the “happy, healthy hormones”.
