Do you have chronic inflammation?

Words DR LIZ ISENRING

We’ve long known that omega 3 fatty acids fight inflammation and are good for everything from gut health to a strong immune system, lowering cholesterol levels and important for brain health too. Omega 3 fatty acids are naturally found in salmon, algae, chia and flaxseeds and walnuts. What many people don’t realise though, is that with our modern lifestyle many people don’t have enough omega 3 fatty acids and take in too much of the unhealthy fats. This occurs even when eating foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids regularly.

Poor nutrition and lifestyle can lead to chronic inflammation that eventually can develop into chronic diseases such type II diabetes, heart disease and certain types of cancers. It is estimated that anywhere from 50-90% of these chronic conditions are due to a poor diet and lifestyle.

Symptoms of chronic inflammation can include muscle and joint pain, digestive problems, allergies, weight gain and headaches.

So what can we do to prevent and manage chronic inflammation? Well, the first steps are to stop smoking, reduce the consumption of alcohol and processed foods and increase omega 3 fatty acid foods and exercise. We now have the technology to test your inflammation status (omega 6 fatty acid ratio to omega 3 fatty acids) and most people can get their levels to within range within four months.

Many of my clients seek me out to help them understand how the latest science and research is relevant to them personally. So please contact me if you’d like to get your inflammation status tested and see if your current omega 3 fatty acid supplement is working effectively. If it is out of range, we can discuss evidence-based dietary and supplement options to get the optimum ratio of omega 6 fatty acids to omega 3 fatty acids, and for most of my clients we can accomplish this in four months or less. This balanced fatty acid profile means inflammation is managed and symptoms are greatly improved and often even eliminated.
