follow your bliss!
I
’m not sure I can fully articulate ‘connection’ with words…(having said that I have written about some experiences on page 16). I believe it’s more about what you feel or perceive in each moment. You may experience this quite noticeably when you are with a person, animal or any moment where you open yourself up to the environment or world at large. There seems to be heightened experiences where the connection is more palpable and you feel the stillness of you. There are other times when you experience it with another through an embrace, a kiss, being in nature or spending time with a child or a beloved pet. Initially you become more aware of each other until the ‘me’ and ‘you’ vanishes and there is just peace and freedom. Actually I’ve
experienced this with extended, random laughter with friends, where joy is a gateway to connecting. So how do you connect with yourself and others? Our writers share their thoughts about many aspects of connection and disconnection and I’m really touched by so many of these heartfelt articles this month and hope you find enough ‘connect time’ to read through the whole edition. As always, we have our yummy ‘food for the soul’ section which seems to be growing in popularity and for some more ‘decadent connection time’ please take a look at our ‘connect competition’ (details on page 23) and go in the draw and you could win a connect pack. Who’s on the Cover? This month we feature the down to earth Ken Dowling for our October edition. How did he go from corporate high flyer to discovering his true self and exploring the magical world of symbols? See page 12/13.

living!
By Vicki Taylor
T
he nutmeg tree originated in the Banda Islands of Indonesia. The nutmeg tree actually has two spices that come from it: nutmeg and mace. Mace is the outer casing of the nutmeg seed and is mainly used in savoury cooking while the nutmeg itself is a little sweeter and mostly used in sweet dishes but can also be used in savoury cooking, e.g. in Middle Eastern cuisines. Nutmeg has a sweet and warm spicy flavour. It marries very well with broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cheese, custards, eggs, fruits, lamb and veal, pasta, potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and rice (think rice pudding – YUM!) Nutmeg is listed as one of the top ten spices as far as health goes. It relieves stomach cramps, eliminates flatulence and diarrhoea, encourages appetite and lowers blood pressure whilst encouraging good blood circulation. It relieves joint and muscle pain and swelling and it helps respiratory conditions like asthma and coughing. What a hero spice! www.redhotchillipepper.com.au

ind Living Café, located on Maple Street in Maleny, is compassionate in its philosophy and was created to encourage people to eat in a more compassionate way. That means being compassionate to ourselves, our planet and the animals we share it with. By being a transitional environment it allows people who are completely new to vegetarian/vegan eating, a gentle entry to a much healthier way of life. And Lucy Walter the owner should know about these benefits, having removed almost all of the symptoms of M.S through a plant based diet, she set out to share this lifestyle with others. “I found it so hard to find somewhere
when I wanted to eat out, I thought, well let’s create somewhere that people share this wonderful style of food with us,” said Lucy, and so Kind Living Café was born. Now the café is over 16 months old and Lucy and her husband Gary are still amazed with how well their café has been received by the community. It is possible to have food that tastes amazing, looks fantastic and is really good for you too! They also run cooking classes, have recently released a recipe book and are in the process of developing a weight loss program. For more information visit: www.kindlivingcafe.com

Apple Pie with Pomegranate Cream Ingredients: 7 Medjool or good quality Turkish Dates ¼ cup of soaked almonds (overnight with skin on) ½ Large apple of choice or 1 small apple peeled (save the peel) ¼ cup cashew milk 2 dessert spoons cashew paste 2 tsp Pomegranate Syrup or juice from freshly squeezed fruit Dash of agave syrup Method: Blend the almonds, dates and

pomegranate syrup together in your Bullet or Vitamix. Regulate your needs depending on the mouths you are feeding. Pack the almond and date mixture into a small cake or tart form and place in the fridge for an hour or so to f rm up. This forms the base for your pie. Peel the apple and take ¼ or ½ depending on the size of your form and slice into thinnish slices. Place the apple into the base of the form in a fan design (presents better this way). Pop up the base of the form so
the sides of the pie are revealed as shown in the picture. In a separate glass bowl pour off some of the cashew milk and add the extra cashew paste. Stir in to create a nice creamy texture. Add a dash of agave syrup. Pour over the top of the pie. Finish off by ‘shushing’ some of the pomegranate syrup over the pie and around the plate. Use some of the peel to add a ‘twirl’ to the top. KOMBUCHA BABY!
T
here hasn’t been much Kombucha on the commercial Australian market – until now! Inspired by a trip to the USA a few years ago, where Kombucha can be found in the everyday supermarket, Jason Callender, a devoted brewer of the fermented tea, started Buchi Kombucha, and is committed to bringing it to Queenslanders. What is Kombucha you ask? Kombucha has been fermented and brewed for over two millennia and has been said to have qualities that detoxify the body and energise the mind. It’s a living beverage that is fermented using a blend of organic white, green and black tea (or blends), organic raw sugar (don’t worry, Kombucha converts this sugar to healthy enzymes that benefit your body), and a Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast (commonly called the SCOBY or Mother). The SCOBY is thick pancake of gelatinous bacteria and yeast that feasts on the tea and sugar converting it into health giving organic acids such as glucuronic, lactic and acetic and creating an effervescent fermented beverage with a slight tang. It’s packed with vitality and goodness. The mission of Buchi is to produce low-cost, local, sustainable. Taking a glocal enterprise model, Buchi focuses on brewing locally and uses only local ingredients (your Buchi brew will have not travelled further than 200 kilometres to reach your fridge) but has a global view allowing for expansion into new regions within Australia and beyond. Committed to certified organic production, and supporting local communities, Buchi will first appear at local farmers markets and eventually to select organic and health food locations in each brew region. Why do we use fair trade?
Chocolate Chai By Dominique Finney
F
irstly fair trade is fair! It is fair on growers who do not get ripped off when they sell their product, it is fair on profits which are distributed to the people who do the hard work to grow the food and it is fair energetically. If we have the choice between buying something that is cheap because people have been exploited for global corporations to get profits, or something that is more expensive and has supported a community and been independently developed, then which one do we choose? It’s the 2nd option every time for me. We support local growers and our community as the priority and we buy organic and grow organic on our certified organic farm as much as possible. We support fair trade because it helps break the poverty cycle that globalisation has increased with foods. We support fair trade because it feels good, it feels right and we are not eating at the expense of someone else’s welfare. And, with every purchase we make that is fair trade, we are speaking with our money and saying “This is good, this is fair. This is the way we want to go for the future.” www.medicineroom.net www.facebook.com/medicineroom
T
he best super antioxidant you can eat is cocoa (even more than our favorite Maqui Berry). Remember to buy fair trade, organic chocolate. I was in a meditation after daily yoga kriya and I always sit in silence for a few minutes after I have completed the session alone. Then I get out my journal and write about whatever it is I need to write about. It might be something I experienced in my mind, heart or felt in my body. It might be something I have transcended. Well, this day quite recently I started writing this recipe. And, then I made it. Like all my recipes, they f oat into my consciousness with a burst of sunshine. It’s very grounding, tastes delicious and is my family’s absolute favourite way to eat/ drink chocolate.
1. Take 300grams of 70 to 100% organic chocolate slab and 30 grams of ground black pepper and melt with 30-60 grams of butter in double saucepan. 2. Take 30 to 100 grams of your chai spice mix ( according to taste) , 2 tablespoons red bush herb, 2 tablespoons raw runny honey and 300ml of water and bring to boil, boil for f ve minutes. 3. Now pour 1 litre of soy milk and the melted chocolate mix into the saucepan with the chai and water boiling. Turn the heat down and let it warm so that everything is hot, but do not let boil. Stir constantly for a few minutes, put in your good vibes and then strain into cups.

Raw Creamy Spring Pasta with Lemon and Asparagus
A
hh, the glory of spring is finally upon us! And with this brings the excitement of the new season’s fruit and vegetables to play with! Eating with the seasons – which means eating locally grown, organic produce – is one of the easiest, and most important ways you can reconnect with your plate. We absolutely love visiting our farmers to collect our cafe produce! We have been lucky enough to have been gifted an enormous amount of local, organic lemons by some beautiful people in our community. This recipe comes from our spring classes last year, and is a great way for us to slowly work our way through our abundance of lemons! By Ames Starr
Ingredients: 500g zucchini 1 lemon, juiced 1 ripe avocado 2-3 cloves garlic Salt and pepper to taste 1 bunch asparagus ½ cup olive oil Optional: 1 bunch rocket and 1 cup peas Method: Shred or spiralise zucchini. You can do this with a spiraliser if you have one. Alternatives are with a mandolin (V-slicer), or you can make thicker, fettuccine like strips

just with a vegetable peeler. Place in a large mixing bowl. Slice asparagus and add to the zucchini spaghetti. Slicing lengthways looks much more attractive than little chunks. In a high speed blender, combine the avocado with the lemon juice, oil, salt and pepper. Blend until creamy. If you don’t have a blender, you can mash together with a fork. Try to remove all lumps and get as creamy a consistency as you can. Finely chop garlic, and add to the avocado mix. Pour the avocado mix over the zucchini. Here comes the fun part – massage the sauce into the zucchini
with your hands – be sure to wash them f rst! Put the bowl aside to rest for 10-15 minutes. This will allow the zucchini time to soften, so as to create a more ‘cooked’ texture. If you are adding the rocket, now is the time to give it a wash to remove any dirt. Gently shake off excess water and roughly chop the leaves. Mix through with zucchini. If you are adding peas, get in your rocking chair and start shelling! Add to zucchini and mix through. Serve up on a plate for your nearest and dearest, and enjoy! This dish is especially delicious served with a little blob of cashew cheese.

Caring for Country!

ncle Eugene Bargo is a proud and pro-active Gooreng Kabi man who has 47 years of Caring for Country knowledge and experience behind him. Uncle Eugene is an Elder, Knowledge Holder, Landowner, Land carer, Horticulturalist, Revegetator, Teacher, Trainer, Landscape Designer & Native Wildflower Florist, and Bushfood Garden Facilitator, to name a few of the many things he does to care for and share our country. Uncle Eugene is connected to country from Caboolture to Miriamvale with this area being hardwired into his blood. As a young person, Uncle Eugene
grew up with his father and other Traditional Men who were born in the late 1800’s and these Men shared their traditional knowledge with him. Uncle Eugene hunted with his father and a group of more than 100 men who all worked together in the bush so as to feed off the land. Amongst many other valuable life experiences, this time in his life has provided Uncle Eugene with a deep understanding of Aboriginal Traditional Knowledge and a great appreciation for the value of teaching and sharing such knowledge with the younger generations. Twenty-seven years ago Uncle Eugene had a burning need to own and work on a part of his mother’s and grandmother’s Traditional Country and so bought a block of land at Kilkivan. Together with his children, he now operates a Native Wildflower Nursery and they make a very sound and sustainable income from the propagation and sale of wildflowers. Uncle Eugene’s extensive knowledge of native plants now extends to the cultivation of wildflowers for particular colours and characteristics.
Eugene has developed a strong friendship with eco-documentary maker Marc Bright. Marc shares Eugene’s passion for cultural and environmental awareness and continues to document the specialised Aboriginal Knowledge that Eugene shares openly during his ‘ Walk and Talk’ Bush classroom tours. Eugene was featured in an award winning short documentary ‘Saving Mary’ and is the feature character in another short doco ‘Eugene the Storyteller.’ Eugene deeply values the sharing of oral history and is very committed to passing-on the knowledge to the next generations constantly making efforts to keep his culture relevant and alive. He delivers weekly Aboriginal Cultural Discourse to school students, teachers and support workers in regional schools. Eugene also operates his informative Indigenous Walk and Talk services – Diddilibah Tours (Diddilibah is Eugene’s Totem name. It means ‘Black Snake!’). Ken launched his f rst book “Universal Symbols: Keys to Your Consciousness” a few months ago and it has had a phenomenal response from the public. Not only does Ken have international aspirations for the book, he would also like to create a conscious movement of writers and healers on the world stage to generate and create oneness. “We all need each other – there is no separation. We can come from a space of oneness but with clarity and not with preconceived ideas that one modality is the only way. How can we bring this together and espouse oneness?” By Vanessa Finnigan
K
en Dowling is a way shower of how to be truly ‘connected’. About 14 years ago he gave up his high flying corporate lifestyle and found his true calling and creative genius. During this time he has transformed thousands of lives with his energy work and brought through 500 unique symbols and sculptures into existence for the purpose of raising consciousness on the planet. This month I spoke with Ken about the magic of symbols and the joy of living. For twenty-five years Ken climbed the corporate ladder, tucking an MBA under his belt (providing for his first wife and three children) and on the surface, ticking all the boxes of success. “I rose to the top of my profession with very little natural ability. Not many people admit this,” he said. “But I didn’t realise I was using my intuition even back then. I did planning on a major Australian company in three hours with one assistant and basically channelled it.” Back in his corporate days Ken prided himself on his strong mind/intellect, but 12
12.indd 1
eventually this was to become his Achilles heel, as he realised how depressed and meaningless his life was. It was this suffering that presented realisations which allowed him to heal the past and let go of what wasn’t working in order to transform his life. “We all have an inner strength or soul that is driving us – everyone of us. And in that there is a call you get, deep in yourself and that tends to happen when you are tested not when you are partying. When we are tested we get into the core of ourselves and we find aspects of ourselves that we may never have experienced before. And that’s when I got the gist of being able to tune into myself and realise my answers were inside me, they weren’t outside me,” Ken said. “When I look back on my life every piece is like a brick in the wall. Every piece is contributing to life and my lifestyle – nothing is wasted, both the good and the bad.” Although, being a mainstream, rational, corporate sort of guy meant that
stepping onto the path of truth was not an overnight process. Even though Ken used to draw many symbols as a kid, he still didn’t know what to make of the universal symbols initially, itially, nor did he have control over when hen they came to him (sometimes at odd hours ours of the night). “It was a complete freak out – I’m not one of those airy-fairy types, I haven’t got my mung beans, my cheese cloth and my sandals. It was a long slow process with tests and trials. I just havee the ability to get through stuff but I’m m not any different to anyone else,” he said.. Ken believes the biggest issues on ourr planet are being too

UNIVERSAL CONNECTIONS intellectual and desensitised. So his work helps people to sense and also know their true selves and feelings, rather than trying to think their way to a meaningful life. He said, “The gift of symbology – is the ability to bypass the intellect and act as a key to unlock, release, amplify anything that’s pre-existing inside the person including their gifts.” “I got out of the inquisitiveness about ‘what is the meaning of life’ and became interested in ‘what is the meaning of my life’. He said his relationships with others and his horses, dogs and even the plantshelp him to understand more of humanity, as everything has a consciousness.” Ken empowers people and gives them simple tools they can apply to their lives rather than keeping them locked in or dependent on some sort of process or ritual that gives their power away to someone else. “It’s not all serious, hard work, sitting in meditation for 16 weeks and not talking to anyone, or having your toe
nails and finger nails grow back on themselves. Get out of all the habits and rituals and old stuff and create what works for you today. Evolution is about the constant expansion of who we are.” He said how he creates the symbolic sculptures changes over time and his work evolves as he grows. “As humans we have a predisposition to look for what’s wrong rather than look for what’s right. The beauty of the symbols is everyone will work with them and feel them in a completely different way.” Ken said it’s not another process, program or philosophy that people have to work their way through and intellectualise. Ken laughed, “The symbols won’t let you. The symbols turn the volume of your soul up so loud that you can no longer ignore yourself. They are universal for everyone. I have had people from just about every culture on this planet recognise elements of their own cultural symbology in the symbols.” We seem to have lost the magic of symbol symbology in our moder modern times. Ken believe believes many people aroun around the globe are obses obsessed with financial aff affair airs and are doing all th the motivational and ‘fairy dust’ tech techniques on offer but they are not act actually engaging in tru truth which will br bring about real ch change. Ken ex explained the th three biggest areas o of concern for p people are: sexuality, money and relationships and they are all funda fundamentally linked

with our connection with the planet and our connection with ourselves. He said there are vows we have made that are still running on a super conscious level inside our energy fields and we’ve just got to make sure that we renounce them. “I don’t have all the answers – but I know how to listen. When we learn to love ourselves, then we may have some understanding of how to love others and demonstrate that in many forms. Doing nothing is not an option,” said Ken. My conversations with Ken and his partner Kylie Blackman were insightful with a lot of laughter in between. The symbol ‘Being Visible’ (see above) has also played a role in facilitating my journey with stepping out more into the public eye. www.universalsymbols.com.au Holistic Bliss, October 2012

ave you seen the movie Avatar? Did you notice the connection the Navi had with the plants and animals? Would you like to have that connection with everything? What if you already do, are you willing to receive it and acknowledge it? If we all acknowledged the connection we have to the planet and everything on it, would we sit back and allow the planet to be consumed? We already have the capacity to be in connection to everything and everyone on the planet. We have all had the experience where we have been thinking about someone and the phone rings or the doors knocks and it has been the person we were thinking about. Everything on this planet will gift to us unconditionally, we just have to be willing to receive it. What do we mean by this? For example why do animals have the ability to see into the future and know what weather conditions are coming and prepare for it? Kangaroos have the ability to suspend the development of another embryo until external conditions, such as availability of food, are right for the
emergence of their young. On our farm a month before the floods in January 2010 we had an amazing number of carpet snakes come and take our poultry. There was a point that we were getting up three times a night to remove them. When the rain came we realised that the snakes were preparing for the month long wet weather that we had. The animals and plants are willing to receive the information from the earth and act on it so that they can live in harmony with the planet. In return they gift back to the earth maintaining and balancing the cycle of life eg. Manures, acoustic vibration and organic matters. It is not only the animals that have this ability, the trees adjust to future events; we have noticed the mandarins on our property always flower early if we are going to have an early winter. Since starting Access Consciousness we have enhanced our ability to be in communion with the earth and animals. It has allowed us to look at things from a different perspective and every time we have a fixed point of view about how something should be done, we have been able to see what else is possible. For
example – everyone sees weeds as such wrongness and poisons them. We look at the whole picture – What is that weed showing us? Is the soil compacted, does is require a certain mineral? What we are not willing to look at is that weeds also provide nectar for bees, birds and other pollinators. Weeds are really herbs in disguise and are homeopathic to the earth. What would it be like if we all embraced our ability to be in communion with the earth and every living thing on it? All the organic farming in the world will not change anything unless the level of human consciousness is raised to create something different for this planet to be sustainable. Are you willing to be like the animals and plants and step into another level of consciousness? This is what the earth requires for us to see beyond the consumption of the planet. Connection to All Things
Great and Small!

his planet we live on never ceases to show us so much power. One of those powers is the beauty of connection - to meet up with those that are part of the journey. Each moment I see this, whether it is in the reflection of something that was or whether it is in the moment. Sometimes you wonder, why or how did I meet this person - sometimes over time the relationship that forms tells its own story and sometimes in these stories we find our answers. Connection I find doesn’t always come from the connecting of others, sometimes I find it in the craft that you practice – you can look back on the different jobs you have had and you again realise the power of this planet to take you where you are to go and what you are to do – again this can be over many years until the story truly comes out. Separation and division of all, is one of the most common causes of pain that we see every day – I often look for ways to help people see that we are all connected. Some of us find this a strange concept but that is all the more reasoning for me to do my very best by nature to help people see that we are all the same.
A feeling of oneness – no more room to fear and doubt – to just love – to just be – to enjoy a life full of love and energy. I say to my eight year old – before we speak, I would like us to all feel, is it necessary, is it nice, is it kind – sometimes just those words will change how you connect with another on the planet. Love is the strongest force and through this, we will take our journey to the source. I watch sometimes – the human form and I see manipulation, separation and division. But I also see in these moments it is only truth and love that is missing and I hang on to the hope that if I do not question why this person is in my life, (no judgement on the why), I will be able to help this person get through their fear and in that moment they will connect with the source. The old saying ‘the truth will set you free’ is very true – whoever we connect with, whether it feels right or wrong, good or bad, do not judge the connection, let the story begin and all will be shown to us. It always makes me look at what and who I am and what part I play in this separation and this always leads me to go through my life and become clearer and in doing this I feel the connection to the why. www.daisysplace.com.au

Surviving the
Deadlines!
By Vanessa Finnigan
S
ometimes in the media you have to learn to deal with both sides of the coin – some people reject you or label what you have created and others totally love what you do. Somewhere in the middle is peace. Whatever I encounter, I just keep moving along…and I usually act on the inspiration that comes. At the same time I am inundated with a cascade of tasks and requests. The phones are ringing with a tone of ‘hurry up’; it’s raining emails and I must remember to drop in some magazines to someone who has run out! It feels at times like I am in the eye of the Holistic Bliss storm but I am learning each month to pull back, delegate and observe everything that is happening. Then I can see the flow and connection in it all rather than the chaos. It’s not about pretending it’s something that it isn’t, but I can create a new way!
An article comes in early – how does it get any better? Something doesn’t make it in on time – what else is possible? Then someone submits an article, written from the heart that brings me to tears and I remember why I am doing this and what it’s all about. But even with all those heartfelt moments, sometimes I just need to walk away…Whenever I’ve made the decision to take myself off to the beach for an hour, nature has usually given me a lesson on how to let go. I find a nice quiet spot on the beach and lie on my back and look up into the bluest of blue skies. The clouds have created a powdery mural…and then the patterns change right in front of my eyes and some clouds disappear altogether – everything is always changing, moving and transforming! I gaze at the osprey and watch it glide effortlessly using the gift of the wind and I feel a sense of
peace and relaxation come over me. It’s not madly flapping its wings to get where it’s going. In a similar way the ocean is vast and limitless and I think to myself – these are all elements of our true nature, everything else seems quite insignificant. Don’t get me wrong, publishing on other days can feel like treading water in the deep ocean! And someone needs to be organised (bossy) enough to get everything off to print!! There are times when the heart races. I’m not perfect. And I’m not trying to be ‘spiritual’ about all this but more and more I see ‘the comedy of errors’ and the flow… one thing ‘falls out’ and then another thing appears. Being a publisher has deepened my connection with myself and others and, more and more, I am learning the art of trusting in life.
Don’t be dumped by the intensity of your emotions, or pulled out to p sea by an emotional rip!

Connection Through Medical Intuition By Jean Sheehan, Principal – Millennium Education
W
hat if the body had an innate system which is connected to all the physical aspects of the body, the universe, all others and whatever is happening in the world. Welcome to Medical Intuition. In modern medicine each physical organ, endocrine, muscle and body part has a specific signature or job to perform. So too does the metaphysical or unseen hologram of each body part. Join me on a medical intuitive journey sharing how we are all connected on some level using the human body. Names have been changed for confidentiality. Angie had many decisions (gall bladder – decisions) to make in her life regarding family, home and her career. As a successful business woman she felt under pressure (limbic brain – right / wrong living) and a huge burden (shoulders – burden) of responsibility (thymus gland – over responsible). Her three children said they missed her and her husband continually referred everything back to ‘dollar productivity’ (money issues – 2nd chakra) and that all her actions should be ‘worthwhile’ (pelvis
bone – self worth). She was experiencing overwhelm (small bowel – overwhelm), procrastination (gall bladder – procrastination), exhaustion (adrenals – motivation only for others). She was putting on weight (thyroid – activity for others, suffocation of self, not being devoted to herself). That is when Angie decided to do a medical intuitive session where she was awakened to what she was creating and how everything is connected. Her whole endocrine system, organs and body parts were synchronised to have the belief system that she was not valuable and to be loved she must be everything to everyone. Her body led me to the lungs (lungs – grief) and the element of air. She was not breathing in life for herself. This was connected to the grief of not being her own best friend and doing what fills her heart. The heart is also connected to the element of air which was creating fluid retention around her feet. This was then connected to the 4th dimension which is about acceptance, forgiveness, love and compassion for self. That is exactly what

she was NOT doing. This story was connected to when she was 14 years old and commenced smoking (Grief). There was one more factor, the octahedron shape of sacred geometry which is the element of air and connected to the universal patterns of creation. All these connections to all things allowed me to see that Angie was not breathing in life for herself and she continually was surviving in life not living life. As all these factors were integrated, her life changed dramatically where she created a business from home which also allowed her to see her children, earn more money and she learned to value herself, leading to a life filled with abundance on all levels. If we understand the multi levels of health and connection to the past, present and future, we can design our own destiny. The Challenge of Connecting to Ourselves Cultivating connection with ourselves is a practice where we open our awareness to what’s happening in our minds and bodies. To connect is to open, feel and allow. It is to listen deeply with a
The Nature of Self-Connection Connecting to ourselves can only happen when it is emotionally safe. Our
Did you know that the first cervical vertebra, the atlas, is out of alignment in most people? This circumstance leads to a variety of physical and psychological ailments and illnesses. Atlasprofilax is a neuromuscular technique that liberates the Atlas with only one application accurately, safely and permanently. This powerful relocation immediately activates a self-healing and harmonising process. It is holistic in nature, promoting wellness and rejuvenation on all levels, mind, body and spirit. This method is nonmedical, non-chiropratic.
One Treatment Can Be Life Changing The Atlas supports your head and governs structural alignment. A misaligned Atlas causes restriction of the brain stem, spinal cord, cranial nerves and arteries. This limits our potential for wellbeing and creates tension, restricting the free flow of energy. When the Atlas is installed correctly, the body begins an unwinding process, releasing holding patterns and enabling the body to heal and regenerate.

inner self is like a flower that opens and closes naturally to what is happening around it. If the connection with others is safe and respectful, and the emotions within are not too intense, then the inner self can open. If the self becomes triggered or if the environment ceases to be safe, then the inner-walls will solidify and the old defensive patterns will protect the inner self again. We can witness this process of opening and closing down to what is happening around us. If the environment is severely unsafe then we can close down completely. This is a survival mechanism that we are born with. So the trick is not to always remain connected but rather, to be aware of when we are open and connected and when we are closed and disconnected. We can give ourselves compassion and understanding for the flower like movements of connection to and disconnection from ourselves, in knowing that this process is completely natural. he last time I visited Sydney, I walked amongst tired and drained people. They were disconnected from each other, themselves and life. Coming from the Sunshine Coast where I regularly connected with nature, other people who practiced mindfulness, and to myself, I was very aware of their disconnect. I could not help but feel sad. There was a kind of deadness or “numbing out” on their faces and in their vibe. While perpetual shut-down from ourselves is not desirable, there is a role for inner-disconnection as well as innerconnection.
clear mind. Only when we connect with our thoughts, feelings and actions and watch ourselves with openness and curiosity, can we begin to truly see ourselves. It is this “feeling INTO ourselves” that allows us to acknowledge what we really think and feel. The irony is that initially, we often meet with the part of us that criticises and judges us, and emotional pain that we would do anything to avoid. This pain often aggravates our inner judge and we become more distressed. So even though we may want to connect with ourselves, the reality of connection may increase the intensity of emotional memory which recruits us into disconnect. The other thing that can happen as we attempt to authentically connect with ourselves, is that we meet an inner “brick wall”. To our surprise we may find that our inner self is firmly cut off, even from ourselves. This could leave us asking why do we disconnect from ourselves?

RECONNECTING TO
YOUTHFULNESS
By Jost Sauer
I
was speaking at an electronic music festival out in the country recently. The setting was a beautiful landscape of rolling hills and forest, a colorful village of tents and flags, multiple music stages and a population of chilled-out people dressed to truly express their inner selves. I was surprised to see that a large proportion of the crowd were in their 40s and older. One of the festival organisers told me the percentage of baby boomers attending festival audiences was steadily increasing, and laughingly said it was mid-life crises driving them to try and recapture their youth. But I think it is a surfacing of a deep desire for connection or, more correctly, reconnection. In the philosophy underpinning Traditional Chinese Medicine, we are born connected to everything, to each other and the universe. We are designed to live in accord with the 24-hour chicycle as this keeps us connected to both our inner self and to the cosmos. But over time we slowly disconnect through an unsupported lifestyle of working late into the night, hurriedly eating nutrientdeprived foods at random times, getting
too little sleep, rushing everywhere and always feeling we are out of time. Living like this, we lose touch with our true nature and replace it with an imagined self and an acquired nature. The disconnection slowly shifts our focus away from the eternal to the temporary and material. This is not what we signed up for. We are supposed to be going for material goals and succeeding of course, but not via a lifestyle that can cost us our inner peace and health. We are also supposed to feel we are living a colorful, spontaneous and connected life and, like the festival-goers, be eccentric, independent and unaffected by what the rest of society thinks of us. But not for three days, for always. Just as lifestyle is the problem, lifestyle is also the solution. Taking up a different lifestyle, one that follows the chi-cycle, will reconnect us, make us feel supported and assist us in achieving material goals. We can change to this lifestyle at any time because every hour of the day and night offers an opportunity to make a specific connection. Getting in synch with this, and upgrading to a super
nutrient-enhanced diet, will make you feel healthier, look younger and recapture the feelings of energy, excitement and possibility associated with youth. Better still, this lifestyle leads to the most important connection of all – the connection back to the eternal. Feng Shui Keys to Connecting! By Jeannine Stephens

ow do we manage to stay centered in the crazy, nonstop world of busy, busy, busy! Maintaining a business, connecting with family and friends and coping with a variety of pressures ranging from meetings, deadlines, phone calls, emails, car travel, social media, technology and paperwork can be a challenge (ironic, even with all the technology, there’s still mountains of paper erupting on desktops, office floors and kitchen benches). All this of course for a very worthwhile cause…to pay the bills, educate the kids and take an occasional holiday if we’re lucky. Do you ever want to just hit the STOP button? I give myself a “Health Day”. Recently I rustled through the closet for a day pack & hiking boots & loaded it with basic essentials: trail mix, water and a book titled “The Winter of Our Disconnect” (wine and cheese did cross my mind). After a quick call to my husband to inform him of my decision, I was out the door in a flash and off on a Great Walk through Mapleton Falls National Park. For a few hours I reconnected with nature & experienced fresh air, a sense of freedom, solitude & peace. That special time & book inspired me to realise that “sometimes we need to disconnect to reconnect”.
T
he Feng Shui eight compass sectors influence different types of Qi (energy) for occupants in a building. Relationships, marriage or partnership are represented in the South West sector relating to the Woman/Matriarch. As the woman is often the ‘giver’, ‘carer’ to many, it is vital she is supported. This sector when used actively, can support her to create healthy relationships and feel valued, nurtured and able to manifest her goals and dreams. To enhance this sector use the element of earth as in ceramic objects and yellow and orange colours, along with the element of fire as in bright red objects and colour. Display images that symbolise the woman’s visions and hearts desires. Also create the bedroom with an ambiance revealing a sanctuary, where the woman can leave work and stress behind. The South sector implies reputation, respect and fame, affecting ‘word of mouth’ and how others perceive you. As gossip can have serious consequences, balance in this sector is imperative. Use these sector rooms actively, harmonising with the elements fire and wood, such as the colour bright red in cushions, paintings or rugs and indoor plants. Connection, it’s in the mind and body By Trish Madden
A
s a Remedial Massage Therapist, I see the mind-body connection as the amazing connection that we can have with ourselves, first and foremost. I say “can have” because it is my experience that not all of us are connected to ourselves on a physical/emotional/ spiritual level all of the time. A strong mindbody connection is essential in order for us to live joyful and enriched lives. The art of massage helps us to experience the mind and the body engaging with each other again. Most people feel the physical reaction of massage on the muscles as they relax and soften. They have allowed themselves to come to a complete stillness. No talking. No thinking. No working, no nothing. Just BEING. Still and aware only of the breath. Total connected relaxation. What they are not realizing is that chemical changes are occurring in the body as a result of massage. Endorphins are being released, blood is circulating more freely, toxins are being dislodged eventually to be eliminated. The brain triggers these chemical reactions through the body and the connection is complete once again. I believe part of my role as a massage therapist is to educate and nurture you to be
more “connected”. If you are disconnected from your mind you can’t have good health in your body. The two are inherently linked. When we feel this connection we are also more likely to take responsibility for how our body feels and take positive action in pursuing better health. When you regularly engage your mind with what the rest of your body is feeling, then a whole other level of connection occurs. This can be a connection to what else is happening and how others around you are feeling. You’ll be more aware of your family, friends and colleagues and how their day is affecting them, both on a physical and emotional level. You will be more able to offer comfort, compassion and understanding. You become the NURTURER. Mind-body connection is vitally important on a family and community level as well. From a place of connectedness it is possible to expand the quality of that connection to your extended family and your community too. What a wonderful connected world we live in! live a suburban house with my partner, two small children and a cat we rescued from the storm drains. Our house is the white house on the corner, opposite the netball courts, on the west side of town. It’s the one with the pink scooter and art easel on the balcony. A swing hangs from the Jacaranda, and the lawn is littered with thick brown seed pods and bamboo sticks of various sizes for sword fight reenactments. A sweet scented Moraya hedge surrounds the front yard running to our garage that houses a family of illtempered possums we’d like to evict. The veggie patch near our letterbox quarters a large and amiable blue tongue lizard whose specific whereabouts are investigated daily by children in the neighbourhood. He can stay. Yard work is not our forte. The berries from the Lilly Pillys litter the sloping front lawn. I could collect them, but their berries feed the cranky possums and
songbirds in the spring. A dying Illawarra Flame Tree is home to a nesting pair of silver-backed butcherbirds, who return each year, so I have let it stand as well. The rock pile our girls continue to grow at the base of the jacaranda tree is now home to a community of penny lizards and is now just the right height for climbing onto the thick truck. It has also been spared. While some would find our house an odd shape from too many room additions, too small and not exactly ‘modern’ it means we can run our household on a modest income, which, in turn, frees up time for blue tongue lizard investigations, barrel rolling down the front slope of the garden, and picnics under the purple jacaranda blooms in summer. From the point of view of a child, the loving attention of
one’s parents – a good climbing tree and some creatures in the garden —count for more than closet space and a new dishwasher. A green tree frog in the compost and the sound of lorikeets the trees bring more joy to a three-year-old, we now suspect, than pristine landscaping. Author Richard Louv (Last Child in the Woods) writes about the importance of reducing what he calls ‘naturedeficient disorder’ in children. Where more kids than ever before are disconnected from the everyday rhythms of the earth – with reduced leisure time; more time in front of televisions, computers, and mobile phones; sedentary lifestyles and where nature activities are often criminalized. Researcher Jane Clark calls these children ‘containerized children’ where they spend more time in car seats, high chairs, strollers, and even baby seats for watching TV. Ironically we live in a world where even older children and adolescents know more about the earth, but less

about their own backyard. It’s a symptom of a larger social problem where we are developing more of a ‘virtual’ relationship with the earth. ‘I am reminded’, says Louv of teenagers, ‘that while they are aware of the global threats to the environment – their physical contact, their intimacy with nature, is fading. It seems nature is something to watch, to consume, to wear’. So why should we seek to reduce ‘nature deficit disorder’? Because our mental, physical, and spiritual health depends upon it. Exposure to nature reduces diseases, improves cognitive abilities and resistance to stresses. We develop and thrive through the sensory input from the natural world and its absence can cause all manner of illness. Author Bill McKibben has called this time ‘the end of nature’. But as a mother of two small children living in a moderate suburban home like most people, I am far less pessimistic. I watch how children connect with nature with the same ease as breathing – if we give them the space to do so. Right now, my children take great pleasure in the regular procession of the seasons, with its rhythmical
departures and returns of leaves, birds, buds, and flowers. So do we adults, of course. But I’ve become aware that children also depend on seasonal events to mark the passage of time. When one is not yet old enough to read or understand the days of the week, when the difference between ‘next month’ and ‘tomorrow’ is still a little hazy, it is comforting to know that spring is here when the strawberries first appear, that one’s birthday falls at the peak of mango time, that we need to cover the kale in our veggie patch when summer is in full swing so the caterpillars won’t massacre the whole plant, that the coconut oil in our pantry becomes hard when we are moving into autumn – the same time the butcherbirds come back to nest. Right now, I want my children to simply trust in these events…and in turn their kids will too! MAN TALK:
Shedding the Light on Bowen
T
wo editions ago I finished off this column with a quip about reikiing the yard and it still hasn’t come about. Why, because I had to go to Tropical North Queensland for a breaking story, or so I thought. Ed said that for this coming edition she wanted me to experience Bowen and write about it. Fantastic, I thought, I’ll be like a roving reporter, an almost foreign correspondent (given that the far northern tropics are foreign to me). A gonzo journalist walking in the footsteps of the likes of Hunter S Thompson et al, how exciting! So I threw on my Acapulco shirt, slid on my Bermuda shorts, grabbed my Panama hat and headed for the heady tropical nuances of Bowen. But then I found out I got it all wrong!! After a phone call from the office, I found out I was booked in for Bowen Therapy in Currimundi on the Sunny Coast…Oops! On the long trip south along the Roadwork Highway, I had time to reflect and rejoice in the fact that I may have a chance now, to ease
the pain in my leg from that near death crocodile attack. Fine! Well, not near death but persistent pain, and not crocodile, more like osteoarthritis. But it still hurts, all be it not in an adventurous, romantic, tropical way. Ok, I didn’t know anything about Bowen therapy, that’s why I do this column, because I don’t know anything, I’m a blank canvas for natural therapies. Bowen Therapy was developed in Geelong by Tom Bowen in the 1950’s and has grown to popular and respected therapy with over 25,000 practitioners worldwide. It is a gentle form of therapy using subtle moves that send messages through the muscles and connective tissue to retrieve cellular memory of a balanced state of wellbeing. It’s a little like rebooting you computer into the most recent functional state. The process uses gentle touching and forcefree manipulation with essential frequent pauses. In fact the practitioner often leaves the room during these pauses which allows the body time to respond in its own time and way. This
technique addresses the musculoskeletal, fascia, nerves and internal organ networks to help improve lymphatic drainage and circulation and aids the assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins. My experience was calming and rejuvenating, I felt looser and my pain was overall considerably reduced in the following days and weeks. The practitioner I saw, Linda Woodward, has a lifetime of experience, and believe me, you know, you’re in good hands. She is also an accredited trainer and facilitates training in accredited Bowen therapy courses through her Nature Clinic & Training Centre in Currimundi. Interestingly, the Bowen technique is also very successful when used with animals and of course children because of its non-invasive, painless nature. Well that’s all I have time for as I am now off on consignment to a far off, exotic destination to practise the finer elements of my new found gonzo roots.

Technology to Connect Globally By Aishah Macgill
T
his century has heralded one of the most important changes to the way we read books. The world of publishing has been turned on its head. Control of book publishing is slowly changing hands. It’s becoming the property of ‘the people’. No longer totally controlled by faceless heads of publishing houses whose bottom line is the almighty dollar. ANYONE can publish a book these days and have a potential instant, world wide audience. Welcome to the Brave New World, the era of the electronic eBook reader and the eMag! The man responsible for this change is American Jeff Pezos, the eccentric, now Billionaire owner of Amazon.com. Through his self publishing platform K.D.P. (Kindle Direct Publishing), as long as you can string two words together coherently, have a story or a message to tell the world, virtually any information of any kind, you can now become a self published author. On these new devices, we can now
instantly download books from all genres internationally. The price ranges from free upwards to $3,500 (this was the most expensive eBook I found, a text book about Space Engineering). The average price of an eBook is between .99¢ and 9.99. It makes reading affordable, especially for us Australians; we have always paid a premium price for print books compared to other first world countries. Self published authors also stand to make more money per book sale than from a traditional book royalty from a publisher. Will eBooks replace print books? Who doesn’t love the smell of fresh ink, the aroma of aged paper, the gentle touch of a page? Print books, I hope, will always be around. Some advantages of eBooks are that they will be available for all eternity; they don’t use paper and therefore no trees; they are more affordable yet the author can make more money; they don’t take up much space compared to a bookshelf.
My reading device, the size of one book, can hold up to 3,000 books! If you are travelling or space is at a premium, an eReader could suit your lifestyle. They are light and the battery life is extraordinary. It lasts up to a month. Many parents love eBooks and find their kids are reading more and they can afford to buy them more books to read. Many of the classics are also available at the swipe of your credit card and the push of that magic button! The top selling genres on eBook devices right now are: romance, fantasy, paranormal romance, sci-fi then adventure. Erotica is fairly high up there as well, closely followed by horror and thrillers then comedy. So, if you have a book inside of you that’s been swimming around your head, keeping you awake at night or you ever thought, “I could’ve written that better!” Now is the time. Be it a memoir, a how to book, a work of fiction – anything, now is the time to start writing and get your words out there into the cosmos! Forever!

Letting Go of the Control Freak in You! By Jennifer Cook
L
ife is full of highs and lows and with this comes a range of emotions. Unfortunately, some of these feelings such as anger or fear are labelled ‘bad’, which leads some people to try to “get rid of ” or avoid these emotions. No wonder given the common belief that we should be able to “control” our feelings. However, experiencing a range of feelings is what makes us human. Furthermore, feelings are neither good nor bad; rather it may be useful to view them as a guide. For example, we feel angry at injustice; fear alerts us to potential danger; and sadness allows us to process grief. It is when we do not embrace our emotions and use all kinds of strategies to get rid of or avoid them, that life can be a struggle. The notion that trying to control our feelings is counter-productive is emphasised in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). After all, the only things we can truly control are our own actions and what we pay
30

attention to (both in the external world and inside our minds). Moreover, the more we try to control or fight things (including other people and our own feelings), the more we struggle. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy provides a number of strategies with the aim of helping you to create a rich, full and meaningful life, including: • accepting uncomfortable feelings so they have less influence over you, • letting go of the unimportant commentary that plays in your mind rather than getting caught up in it, and • acting in accordance with what matters to you (i.e. your values). For more information about ACT visit www.thehappinesstrap.com or this introductory chapter from Dr Russ Harris’ book The Happiness Trap http://www.thehappinesstrap.com/ upimages/Introduction_to_the_ Happiness_Trap.pdf
Jennifer has experience in both the private and public sectors including QLD Health (Adult Mental Health) and Pine Rivers Private Hospital. She values holistic health care and working collaboratively within a team of practitioners with various specialties, to achieve the best outcomes for clients. Favouring an Acceptance & Commitment Therapy approach, one of the core features of her practice is helping clients to identify their innermost values, which guide them to set achievable, meaningful goals. Having recently had her f rst baby, she is familiar with the struggles faced by working mums juggling family and work life and can teach clients strategies to achieve balance and a sense of peace and fulf llment. No more itchy, scratchies By Julie Massoni
D
o you have a dog that scratches a lot even when he/she doesn’t have any fleas? If so, your dog may be suffering from a skin allergy or from dermatitis - both of which are extremely common nowadays. When it comes to allergies and allergy symptoms, itchy skin is prevalent. Some dogs will scratch and chew incessantly to relieve their itch to the point where the affected areas begin to bleed. This may leave the dog with not just physical symptoms but emotional symptoms too and it is very difficult to see our beloved four-legged friends suffer like this. Conventional medicines such as antibiotics, cortisone or anti-histamines may offer temporary relief but they will not generally stop the itching long term. (You may notice that the itching returns once the medication is no longer administered.) The naturopathic approach is to find the underlying cause of the allergy and use natural non-toxic remedies and supplements along with low-allergy, fresh food diets to help correct the imbalance. Many dogs improve with a simple change in diet by eliminating all processed pet food (and treats) and
BEFORE
replacing with fresh, raw food. Others respond well to herbal and homeopathic remedies in addition to a healthy diet. Remedies can be prescribed to suit the animal’s individual needs. When you think about how many chemicals and drugs are given to dogs in the form of worming, heartworm and flea treatments, vaccinations and the additives in commercial food, it is little wonder that there are such a large number of dogs suffering unnecessarily from poor health. When dogs are exposed to so many toxins, their liver and immune system can become overloaded causing chronic skin problems, many of which result in itchy skin. To assist dogs with itchy skin, firstly look at what they are eating. If they are eating a diet made up of processed foods, gradually change the diet to a fresh food, preservative-free diet. Some dogs can become allergic to meat so an elimination diet may be required to identify which foods are causing the problems. It is necessary to avoid any potential allergens for at least 6 weeks for results to be effective and changing from one brand of processed food to another is not going to give accurate results.
AFTER
If you do have any itchy dog, then you may have found that external products only give temporary relief. This is because internal treatment is required for the best chance at long-term relief. Nutritional support is also very helpful such as Omega 3 essential fatty acids and ‘greens’ such as alfalfa, green barley and spirulina. Vitamins A, C and E, zinc, sulphur, biotin and selenium are important nutrients to help with skin problems. In addition to providing a fresh, raw food diet and nutritional support, you may like to use one of the following rinses to help offer some relief from itchy skin. Oatmeal Bath: Place ½ to 1 cup of oatmeal into a stocking or cheesecloth and run warm water through until the water turns a milky colour. This is great for itchy inflamed paws or belly. Allow to soak for at least 10 minutes if you can. Epsom Salts Soak: Place a small handful of epsom salts into some warm water in a tub and soak paws or pour over the dog’s skin. Rinse off after about 15 minutes. Another good rinse can be made from peppermint, chamomile or green tea. Make a strong infusion using about 3 or 4 teabags and add extra water to cool and dilute until the colour of weak tea. Pour the solution over affected areas of skin and leave to dry. If you do have an itchy dog, then contact Greenpet for advice on how natural therapies may benefit them. Julie Massoni, Animal naturopath www.greenpet.com.au

his month Tanya Arnold talks to two enlightened dogs, Malcolm and Rosie, about this month’s theme ‘connection’. Q. Malcolm, you have an amazing heart connection with your parents, have you always been this close? A: Life hasn’t always been this kind. I was in the pound when my parents found me. I had been separated from my sister and would often go out searching for her. That’s how I ended up in the pound. My owners could no longer care for me and that’s when I met my new family. They wanted to give me the life I had always dreamed of. I remember the day we arrived at my new home, they took me out the back and I went for it. I rolled and rolled and rolled. My parents say I rolled for at least five minutes. That afternoon, I laid by my mum’s side and fell asleep. It was at that point I knew I was home and it was my turn to be taken care of. We are a family of six and our parents treat us all
equally and give us the freedom to make our own choices. They have so much faith in us. Q. People often say that pets have a psychic connection with their owners, would you say this is true?
A: Our mother has a strong intuitive connection with all of us. This year my mum gave up her job. Before then, she was so miserable going to work it made us all so stressed. Now that she is following her heart, we are so much happier, and so is she. Mum’s connection with my cat sister, Poppy, is quite unique. If mum is ever tense or worried, Poppy
Only holistic clinic in inner Brisbane
will be quite reactive also. She will grumble and start fighting with my other cat sister, Pumpkin. As soon as mum breathes and opens up her heart, Poppy walks away and goes to sleep. It is amazing. My dad always asks mum what’s wrong when Poppy is grumpy. Q. Rosie, what are your thoughts on the relationship between man and dog? A: We are man’s best friend of course. I personally could not imagine life without a human. They are so kind to us. They feed us, they protect us and take care of our coats. Back in the day, my ancestors had to find and kill their next meal; find somewhere to sleep; and be on guard at all times for danger. Dogs have really got it made these days. We no longer have to be the leader of the pack and can sit back and just be dogs. How does it get any better than this? Thank you for sharing your hearts and thoughts with us.

A Life of Connection By Jenny Golsby
“
The love of a family is life’s greatest blessing” – Unknown During my life I have made many connections but none as strong as my connection to animals, the beauty of nature, the determination to never give up and the power of belief. This connection is my life’s work. Time slips by so quickly and our lives are constantly changing. As I grow older I realise, how I live my life defines who I am, this is a direct connection to my roots. On the 8th of September 2012 my mother passed away and with her passing came the realisation that her passion for the welfare of this planet and all it contains was greatly influenced by her mother, her grandmother and I would assume previous generations. My mum was born in November 1929 and at a very early she age demonstrated her independence, determination and courage. For example, at the tender age of just 5, her daily ride to and from school covered several miles.
This little girl was put on and taken off her big horse Bluey at the beginning and end of each journey to and from school. Her childhood was spent living on the land where her love of animals was nurtured. Her natural affinity with horses would see her excel at polocrosse, where she would often outclass rivals with her goal scoring ability. This connection to horses was passed on to my sisters. My parents married in 1956 and settled on “Burley” (my home) and mum continued to work on the land in partnership with my father involving herself in all aspects of farm life, from driving tractors and trucks, drenching, mustering, chipping burrs and rearing poddys. Mum’s passion for nature saw her grow her beautiful garden and plant trees across the hills of Burley. When I close my eyes I have many memories and visions of mum. All of them will

include a devoted, caring and determined lady. She touched the hearts of those who knew her and never diverted from her passion and beliefs. She had a passion for all creatures great and small, for the environment and for the animals and plants she nurtured and grew. Her heart knew no bounds and she often said if she had one wish – “she would rid the world of cruelty”. I am comforted by knowing that she often said – “If I could live my life over, I wouldn’t change a thing.” I write this article in memory of my mother. New Motherhood: Paying it Forward By Katrina Zaslavsky
W
ithout helping hands in the early weeks, new mothers may struggle in silence. One in four Australian mums suffers from postnatal depression and many more feel overwhelmed and anxious about their new role. Ideally, the only thing a new mother should concern herself with is proper rest and recovery from childbirth and caring for her baby. A blissful babymoon of getting to know each other. Mother nature in her wisdom gives us plenty of resting opportunity while feeding our baby. But without proper care and nourishment ourselves, both mummy and baby can suffer. In some cultures, family members take care of all housework and meals to support the new mother for the first 40 days! While every mother would love nothing more than the leisure to bask in her baby’s gorgeousness while everything else is taken care of, someone needs to commit to “mothering the mother to make this a possibility. A real challenge since many mothers lack community or
proper support and fathers are normally back to work after the first week or two. Spare a thought for who is going to help once baby arrives – even if it means hiring help. Then go easy on yourself. Once we get the help we need, learn to slow down to live in baby-time compartments and let go of extra demands, we can relax and enjoy this precious time. A new mummy gift I will never forget: A home cooked meal delivered by a kind hearted friend. It was this simple act of kindness from the heart that made me feel like someone cared and understood. She never asked if I needed help but just arrived like an angel on my doorstep and then promptly disappeared. In all my busyness I never got the chance to return the kindness but now I just “pay it forward whenever I can. Imagine if each of us gave back to a new mother in need, the beautiful ripples that could spread. It’s not always obvious either; mothers often put on a brave face to the world when the inside is a mess. (not just the state of the house!) Don’t ask if they need anything, just do it!
Who do you know that may need a delivery of fresh produce or healthy meal? Or simply hold the baby for five minutes so she can take a shower! You’d be surprised how the simple things are most appreciated. Together we can make a difference by caring enough to lend a hand – so let’s bring back the sisterhood! We are One! By Mary-Lou Stephens
I
’d never heard the term “separation theology” until a few weeks ago but I had known of the concept since I was a child. Separation theology tells us that God is separate from us. God is the bearded man in the sky, the One who stands in judgement, the Higher Power who we pray to in times of trouble or need. Separation theology is based on the theory that we are wrong somehow. That God had to separate from us because of that wrongness, and now it’s up to us to do all the right things and obey the commandments in order to earn our way back into God’s grace. It was Neale Donald Walsh who introduced me to separation theology. I was at the Hay House convention in Sydney and he was the last speaker. I had read his book Conversations with God years ago, and seen the movie, but being in the same room as him was a completely different experience. He was funny, self-deprecating, vibrant and
passionate. And, in keeping with his message, was the only one of the speakers to come down from the stage and walk amongst us. His message was: don’t believe those who would tell you that you and God are separate. If you do, then you will believe you are separate from everybody else, and that your society is separate from other societies. You will believe in us and them, and it follows that you will feel free to treat them in ways you would never treat yourself. Separation theology makes us lonely, competitive, suspicious and judgmental. It cuts us off from the things we desire most; connection, love and acceptance, that feeling of home, a place where we belong without question, where we are safe and loved unconditionally. So if God does not live on a cloud, looking down on us and judging us, where is he? Neale believes that God is within us, that there is no separation.
He suggests we ask ourselves four questions, every day: 1. Who am I? 2. Where am I? 3. Why am I where I am? 4. What do I intend to do about that? Neale’s answers: 1. I am an aspect of divinity. 2. I am in the realm of the physical. 3. Only in the realm of the physical can I express who I am. That’s up to you! So, who are you, where are you, why are you where you are, and what do you intend to do about that? For myself, I believe I am an infinite being. I believe that that which some call God is within me, and in you. I believe that my reality is shaped by my thoughts, and that I am here to have fun. And as for question four…that changes moment to moment. Mary-Lou’s meditation memoir is being released by Pan Macmillan in April 2013 www.maryloustephens.com.au

Emphasising Social Connections By Sam Geppi
O
ctober 2 – Mercury enters Libra, until October 23. This is a good time for relationship communication and flexibility in your partnerships. Mercury joins Saturn in Libra. Both Saturn and Mercury are neutral planets, which have to do with seeing beyond our likes, dislikes and passions. October 5 – Jupiter turns retrograde in Taurus. Jupiter will be retrograde until January 30, 2013. When a planet turns retrograde, it appears to be moving backwards, based on our earthly vantage point. This backward motion forces us to reflect on the deeper meaning of what it indicates. In this case now we will be challenged to apply our teachings in a practical way, and see if they are actually improving our life – or are they merely beliefs. October 15 – The Libra cycle begins as the Sun and Moon come together at the very edge of Virgo. The Sun partners with Saturn (already in Libra), to bring an emphasis on relationships with each
other, including romantic relationships, social obligations and the need to honour all people’s wishes as equal to our own. Compromise is currency in Libra. It buys happiness, wealth and success when in abundance. An aspect from (retrograde) Jupiter from Taurus shows some ease and grace as we navigate these sticky “other-people” lessons. But this retrograde motion may also leave us confused about how to juggle our values and the needs of others. This New Moon happens in Chitra Nakshatra, which ruled by the God Vishwa karma, the divine architect. You may benefit by doing some creative work with others, and building something of meaning in the community. On October 24 – Venus becomes debilitated in Virgo until November 17. Venus is the part of us that wants to enjoy life and be happy. Virgo is a sign of fussiness and nitpicking. The highest quality of Venus energy brings a “happiness for no reason” nature. October 29 – Full Moon in Aries is a
time when we will harmonise the compromising nature of Libra with a more individualised self-expression through Aries. The new Moon which occurred October 15 in Libra was to initiate a cycle of relationship and social compromise. But we can only share ourselves authentically from a place of strength. Anything less feels abusive at some point. Aries is that sign of personal self-expression, where we enthusiastically pursue our individual creativity. This Full Moon takes place in Ashwini Nakshatra – symbolised by two horses running in different directions. There is enormous energy, will and drive behind this new moon. Ashwini is also known as “the physicians of the Gods”, bringing immense healing. But care must be taken to not destroy connections impulsively, only to regret it later.
