FALL / WINTER 2018 LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

The lazy days of summer will soon be a distant memory, and the hustle and bustle of the holidays will take their place. Hosting cocktail parties and family dinners may come naturally for some, while others struggle to find the perfect recipe, or to know where each fork is actually supposed to go(!). To take some of the guesswork out of it for you, we’ve assembled a simple guide for holiday entertaining―from floral centerpieces to proper table settings, decor to drinks―and of course, the food. We’ve gathered beloved recipes from the top chefs in our region, including restaurant staples and family favorites. Some are a bit more complex than others, but fear not. As the illustrious Julia Child once said, “Learn how to cook―try new recipes, learn from your mistakes, be fearless and above all have fun!” We hope that you’ll tackle these recipes with gusto, and let your inner host sparkle. If hosting is your cup of tea, we’ve created a must-have list for your next home, along with stunning design inspiration for your kitchen in both of our House Tours (pages 12 and 20). You’ll also find 15 tips to get your home (and your guest room!) ready for the winter season (page 42). As always, we’ve highlighted local businesses that we love, and we introduce you to our new Give Boldly column (page 16), where we focus on individuals in our Nest communities who are bettering their towns through philanthropic endeavors. or Lexi Powell, design has been a lifelong passion. Originally from Montana, she grew up watching her mother Jennifer, who is also an interior designer, work with colors and fabrics. With an innate sense of color harmonies and composition, Powell moved to Hong Kong in 2003 to work for an international product development design house. In 2008, she branched out on her own to launch ALEXANDRA LAUREN INTERIOR DESIGN, focusing on residential and commercial interiors, eventually moving the business stateside to Jackson, TN, in 2014. “I was accustomed to working with tiny spaces where every inch mattered, so being back in the states with larger spaces has been a fun transition,” shares Powell. She possesses the fundamental spatial recognition to plan for proper flow, but now has more room for added design flare. For this Jackson, TN, home, that flare began with a paint color, Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore. When meeting with the clients, a small but busy family, they wanted a kitchen that functioned well for their active lifestyle, but also had warmth and character. When Powell presented the clients with several design options, they were immediately drawn to the rich blue hue with warm undertones, balanced with white and brass accents. “When you live in a home you love and you aren’t designing for resale, you don’t have to be afraid to play with color,” advises Powell.

A hidden outlet makes it easy to use appliances on the expansive center island. #SOnesty

Go wild with feature lighting—the bigger and bolder, the better. It’s the jewelry of the room.

Once the color scheme and overall tone were set, Powell established the footprint of the kitchen. To combat busy mornings, Powell created a breakfast bar (pictured at left), complete with an outlet and enough counter space to hold everything she needs for a quick breakfast. “When you are finished, you can simply close the cabinets and hide the mess until you have time to clean up,” explains Powell. To

the right of the breakfast bar is an appliance cove, specially designed for the standing mixer in a matching blue hue. The center island has an oversized six-foot-long countertop that houses the gas range, a cookbook nook, and enough storage space below for larger pots, pans, and serving platters. Next, she chose the design elements. While the kitchen is flooded with natural light, ample recessed can lighting was added to the ceiling, along with under mount lighting for the cabinets and workstations, and Schoolhouse Electric brass pendants over the island. Touches of brass carry through to the Emtek hardware and Kohler faucet. The countertops are a true white marble with gray veining. For the backsplash, Powell used a white subway tile with a bevelled

edge. On the sink wall, the cabinetry was given a two-tone tuxedo effect with Hale Navy on the lowers, and Decorator White by Benjamin Moore on the uppers. Engineered hardwood floors in a deep walnut complete the look. What began with a paint swatch evolved into a stunning space that functions as the heart of the home for this Jackson family. Employ this tactic in your own home—find a single design element that speaks to you and go wild! N

GIVE BOLDLY Cristine Nardi

Executive Director, Center for Nonprofit Excellence Ten years ago Cristine Nardi took a leap of faith, leaving her law practice to become the Executive Director for the Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNE). “A community is driven by nonprofits. They are vital to the health and vibrancy of our society,” explains Nardi. But nonprofits often struggle with their own professional development, as their focus is on a specific cause, leaving them with little or no resources to strengthen themselves internally as a business. This is where CNE steps in—through leadership training and development, guidance on governance, and financial and philanthropic advice—CNE is able to bolster nonprofits in Charlottesville, Warrenton, Staunton, and Petersburg, VA, so they can do their best work. “With a local finger on the pulse of the greater Charlottesville area, CNE is able to tailor their offerings to exactly what the community needs, and leverage local resources to benefit each nonprofit,” explains Nardi. She became a member of CNE when it opened in October of 2006, then accepted the position as Executive Director. “I wanted to use my legal and professional skills to really focus on providing technical assistance, resources, and mentoring to the community.” A Shenandoah Valley native, Nardi grew up with parents who possessed a communityminded ethos—understanding the importance of volunteering and giving back. After earning her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, she volunteered with the Peace Corps in Botswana, Africa. “The way in which families were committed to each other, and their complete and

utter acceptance for other community members, it left me with a lasting impression,” shares Nardi. After earning a law degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she served as a clerk on the D.C. Court of Appeals, and worked for a national women’s reproductive health organization in D.C. When Nardi and her husband decided to start a family, they returned to the Charlottesville area. “We knew we wanted to be a part of a tightknit community, with a space for our children to live, and play, and grow up to be themselves,” she said. She returned to practicing law with a focus on public interest, performing general counsel work for small businesses and nonprofits. Now, a decade later, Nardi knows her decision to give up practicing law was the right choice. “It has allowed me to continue to support the nonprofit sector, as I was doing in my law practice. It’s been a perfect fit—an amazing ride.” Nardi is currently concentrating on CNE’s Justice and Equity program, focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion, stating, “The nonprofit sector inhabits a unique position. We serve and are responsible for the well-being of the community. We aim to not only balance the diversity in leadership, but also to address the root causes because it makes us better community stewards.” So, what can we do? Nardi offers, “If you’re interested in getting involved, don’t simply think about it—take action. You can give financially, consider joining a board of directors or volunteer at a nonprofit, and uphold your civic duties by voting. You can be one agent in strengthening your own community.” N NEST MAGAZINE | FALL/WINTER 2018

hen Jenny Mitchell and her husband Matt purchased this classic mid-century modern home in Waynesboro, VA, it was like walking into a time capsule. “Everything had a pink undertone...think Calamine lotion,” laughs Mitchell. Purchased from the original owner, the home had been lovingly cared for, but was in desperate need of a refresh. Mitchell has always been drawn to mid-century modern style, having been an antique dealer with a mid-century focus for 15 years, before becoming an agent with Nest Realty. “We wanted to preserve the original feel, but in a fresh and modern way,” explains Mitchell. In the kitchen, the footprint remained the same, but every element has been changed. They enlisted the help of a Lowe’s kitchen expert, who came to the house for spatial planning and recommendations.

Painting the wood trim really transformed the entire look...there is no rule that you can’t paint wood! #SOnesty

22

NEST MAGAZINE | FALL/WINTER 2018

Together they chose quartz countertops, clean-lined cabinetry in a soft gray, Bosch appliances, and a white hexagon backsplash. The matte black faucet and cabinetry hardware lend a sophisticated and modern edge. “When you’re attempting a low-cost makeover with high-impact, changing the paint color and swapping out the hardware are my recommended go-tos,” shares Mitchell. The walls of the entire first floor have been coated in Classic Gray by Benjamin Moore, including the window and door trim. Mitchell adds, “Painting the wood trim really transformed the entire look. Some people are scared to paint wood, but there is no rule that you can’t paint wood. It’s had its day!” The fireplace, which is a main focal point, has been transformed with Benjamin Moore’s Willow Creek. The stone is Tennessee sandstone, which has a decidedly pink undertone, and would have stood out in juxtaposition with the fresh white and gray colors. Perhaps the most striking feature of the home is the wood ceilings. Originally between the beams was flat paneling that felt wimpy next to the robust wood beams. The Mitchells installed tongue-andgroove wood decking between the beams, leaving it a natural wood tone, knowing it would bring a certain “wow” factor to the space. For furnishings, the living room features a mixture of vintage elements, like the teal and gray wool couch from the Green Valley Auction house, alongside modern pieces from IKEA and the Project 62 line by Target. The remainder of the home has been renovated as well, repurposing materials where possible, while retaining a distinct mid-mod vibe. Our favorite element in the entire house is the row of Schoolhouse Electric light fixtures that span from the breakfast nook through the kitchen. The bold visual statement feels both unique and functional, as the wood ceilings don’t exactly allow for traditional overhead lighting. Take this as a cue in your home—is there a fun way to create a special moment in your house? An unexpected way that form can meet function? If mid-century modern style makes your heart melt as much as ours, harness the angular lines and minimalistic approach, and see where it takes you! N

Decor For our tablescape, we chose to use mixed metals—warm rose gold for the chargers and flatware, bright gold details on the dishes, and antiqued silver on the napkin rings. Don’t be afraid to mix the place settings—our dinner plates, bread plates, and soup bowls were all from different dish sets, with the color scheme tying them together. If that sounds risky, just remember this simple rule to keep your table from feeling cluttered: choose one small-scale pattern, one large-scale pattern, and one solid color plate. Soft gray linen napkins and the table runner act as neutrals set against the warm wood farmhouse table. Rather than splurging on an entirely new set of dinnerware and decor, consider renting items from your local event rental store. We headed to FESTIVE FARE RENTALS in Charlottesville, VA, who provided us with the dishes, flatware, wine glasses, and linens. You’d be surprised at the wide assortment of designs and styles. This rental option allows you to mix and match according to the number of people you’re hosting and the specific dishes you’re serving. And the best part? You can skip the dishwashing— they do it for you! Head to our blog for a list of local event rental options in your area: NestRealty.com/blog/event-rentals. Then head to a local boutique, like ROXIE DAISY in Charlottesville, VA, to add a special item or two to your table, like fun glass-orb salt and pepper shakers. If you add just one quality item a year, you’ll wind up with a lovely collection without overspending.

wrap tightly in plastic wrap. Allow to rest at least an hour. ROLL OUT PASTA: Set rollers on pasta machine to widest setting. Divide dough in half. Rewrap one half and set aside. Working with first half of dough, run it twice through the rollers at the widest setting, keeping it flat. If dough begins to stick, dust rollers very lightly with flour. Reset rollers one width narrower, pass dough through twice. Repeat, continuing to narrow roller setting until you reach second to last setting. Cut the length of dough in half, if needed for easier handling. Once dough is rolled, lay it flat on work surface and cut into 6” pieces. Lay pieces on baking sheet, dusted with polenta. Dust polenta between layers to keep pasta from sticking. Repeat with second half of dough. COOK PASTA AND MUSHROOM SAUCE: Bring large pot of water to boil. On second burner, heat very large skillet over mediumhigh heat. Add remaining 4 TBS olive oil and heat until just smoking. Add mushrooms, saute until they begin to color around the

½

tsp fresh thyme, chopped

¾

cup coffee

1

cup heavy cream

1

tsp sugar

1

tsp salt

1 ½ cup whole fat buttermilk, cold 3

TBS butter, melted

PREPARATION: RED EYE GRAVY: In small skillet, melt butter, add sage and thyme, toasting herbs for 45 seconds. Add flour to butter mixture, whisk until smooth, cook for an additional 2 minutes. Slowly whisk in cream, coffee, salt, and sugar. Let cook until reduced by half, whisking periodically. Remove from heat. BUTTERMILK BISCUITS: Preheat oven to 500°F. Sift flour and baking powder into large bowl. Sprinkle kosher salt into flour mixture. Cube 1 cup cold butter into 1” cubes. Add butter cubes to flour mixture by squeezing the cubes and massaging them into the dough, until the cubes become flat leaves of butter. Place flour mixture into fridge for 5 minutes. Remove from fridge, make a well in the center and add cold buttermilk. Using a rubber spatula, turn the bowl, mixing the dry ingredients from the outside of the bowl into the well in the center. Dough will look dry and crumbly. Pour dough onto floured surface, scraping down edges of the bowl to get every bit. Using your hands, form a flat oval with dough, and begin to fold over onto itself down the middle. Gently fold it over 10 times until a solid mass has formed. Roll dough to 1.5” to 2” thick. Use biscuit cutter to cut circles out of the dough, do not twist the cutter—cut straight down. Cut as many biscuit as possible and place on an ungreased baking sheet close together (almost touching). Melt 3 TBS of butter, set aside. Bake for 6 minutes, then rotate 180 degrees. Bake for additional 3 minutes, then remove, brush on melted butter on top, and place back in oven until golden brown (approx. 15 minutes total). Serve immediately. FINISH: Slice spiral ham into thick slices and sear in a buttered non-stick pan until golden brown. Split biscuits and top with seared ham, finish with gravy on top.

HOSTING M U ST- H A V E S

If hosting dinner parties and holiday events makes your heart happy, here are some things you may consider when purchasing your next home. BUTLER’S PANTRY Every hosts’ dream...a space to store larger serving platters and glassware, prep food, and even keep dishes warm...all while keeping the mess hidden away from guests.

KITCHEN UPGRADES Decide which upgrades are worth the splurge. Dual ovens, a pot-filler, and sixburner gas stove will make cooking large meals easier. For aesthetics, “panel-ready” or “integrated” refrigerators are all the rage. High-end brands like Sub-Zero and KitchenAid are now offering counter-depth refrigerators that are compatible with cabinet fronts, allowing your refrigerator to blend seamlessly into your cabinetry. Head to the blog for a full breakdown of the difference between panel-ready, integrated, and built-in refrigerators: NestRealty.com/blog/refrigerators

ENTRYWAY If you plan on having visitors regularly, add a proper entryway to your “must-have” list—a warm space to welcome to your guests will immediately set them at ease. An adjacent coat closet or built-in storage is key.

FORMAL DINING ROOM While the trend in home building is veering toward open concept living, if you actually use a formal dining space regularly, keep it! Not having to look at a messy kitchen is a huge benefit. A closed off space also allows you to be a bit more daring with your design—bold wallpaper, anyone!?

Winter Florals Create your own centerpieces this holiday season using simple florals from your local grocery store or flower shop. Follow our step-by-step guide below:

1. CHOOSE YOUR VESSEL Mimic the shape of your table—a rectangular container works well on a rectangular table, a round vase works well on a circular table.

2. BUILD A FOUNDATION Place a floral foam brick inside your container, cutting down to size as needed. Using floral tape, create a tic-tac-toe pattern across the top of your container. You will place the stems through the grid and into the foam, helping them stay put. Add 2” of water.

3. GREENS Starting at the bottom, place dark leafy greens in various hues. Magnolia leaves are our go-to green.

4. TEXTURE Use interesting filler flowers like hypericum, and deep burgundy blooms. Scatter them evenly throughout the arrangement.

5. STAR Choose one star flower—we love white hydrangeas for their volume and year-round availability. Place them in a balanced pattern. They should feel intentional, but not too perfect or precious. Remember to keep the blooms low enough to not obstruct conversations across the table!

BIMBERIBON BimBeriBon is named after Bimberi Peak in Australia, and bon, the French word for good. This hot new eatery in West Asheville, NC, is more than living up to the name. Co-owners Reza Setayesh and Mitch Orland want each patron to achieve the peak of feeling good. “We want you to live your best life, and we believe that starts with good food,” shares Reza. But don’t be fooled by the quinoa and vegetable brimming menu, this isn’t a bland and boring approach to food, “It’s flavor first, then health,” explains Reza. The duo wanted to bring that same freshness and life-energy to the restaurant itself. Live plants, natural light, and an airy atmosphere create a sense of energy. Varying hues of green in the furnishings, balanced by touches of natural wood, pop against the predominantly white space. Copy this look to create your own energetic kitchen or breakfast nook. 6 BEARS AND A GOAT BREWERY Designed by the genius team at Spaces Design Studio, the recently opened 6 Bears and a Goat Brewery in Fredericksburg, VA, has a distinct nautical vibe. Which makes sense, given that the seven founders are U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy retirees—the name of the brewery itself comes from the mascots of the military branches. Shades of blue and white are grounded by wood elements. Weathered wood floors are placed in a herringbone pattern, barstools are variations of oak and walnut, and the custom tables are made by Fraser Wood Elements, a Fredericksburg favorite. The stand-out features are the light fixtures—white orbs appear to be suspended by fishing nets. Repetition of the lights throughout the space is impactful and interesting. Try this tactic in your own home, suspending a series of pendants in an entryway or dining room. When you’re not gazing at the decor, take a moment to gaze at the beautiful brews and seafood-filled menu. 6BGBREWINGCO.COM 38

THREVE MERCANTILE We’re swooning over the neutral color palette employed at Threve Mercantile in Wilmington, NC. The refined and restricted use of natural colors and textures creates a calming atmosphere that you’ll want to replicate in your own home. Under the glowing light of chandeliers and the warmth of exposed brick, shop owners Lisa and Justin Hauenstein have lovingly created this treasure of a store—offering furniture, home decor, bath and beauty products, candles, and even items for the littles. With an incredible eye for design, Lisa has carefully curated each element. Natural fibers, wicker, leather, and raw wood play starring roles in the furnishings. Ceramic, glass, and marble can be found amongst the kitchen objects. Top notes of pear and bergamot with a hint of jasmine float above the array of natural candles.
