“WINTER IS THE TIME FOR COMFORT, FOR GOOD FOOD AND WARMTH, FOR THE TOUCH OF A FRIENDLY HAND AND FOR A TALK BESIDE THE FIRE: IT IS THE TIME FOR HOME.”

~ Dame Edith Sitwell, English Poet

Whether you’ll be nestled under a soft blanket of snow this winter or watching the sun fall below a desert swept horizon, the yearning for a cozy nest is universal.

While dark and moody may be the obvious choice for creating a cozy space, in this issue of NEST Magazine, we wanted to spend time at the opposite end of the spectrum—winter whites. #1 CHOOSE YOUR FLOWERS

During the winter months, Bron loves using various white

blooms arranged among lush greenery for a bold and beautiful

statement. The flowers he used are readily available any time of year, and he suggests Trader Joe’s as an affordable source.

As a general rule, you’ll want to use a mix of focal blooms, filler

blooms, and greenery. For this example arrangement, Bron used

approximately 18 focal blooms (white hydrangea and tea roses), six

stems of filler (freesia), and three bunches of greenery (silver dollar eucalyptus, lemon leaf, and dusty miller).

#2 CHOOSE YOUR LOCATION

The location where your arrangement will be displayed

let it flop!” laughs Bron. His artistic, loose, organic style results

in effortlessly chic arrangements, so we’re trusting this approach.

Snipping the ends as you go, place the greenery one variety at a time, beginning with the eucalyptus, allowing it to drape elegantly. Next,

move onto the lemon leaf. Add enough to cover the “mechanics”— the floral wire, tape, and even the edge of the vessel. Finally, insert

the dusty miller, spaced evenly throughout the arrangement. At this point, it should look like a lovely green pillow—soft and full.

Next, you’ll move onto the focal blooms, beginning with the

hydrangeas. “Since they are such large blooms, you’ll want to break them down and separate them. If you placed the entire bloom in one clump, it would feel too heavy,” advises Bron. Instead,

dictates its overall size and layout. If it will be a table centerpiece,

place approximately one third of the head low and deep into the

conversation across the table. The arrangement will also need to be

motto, Bron encourages, “You don’t have to love it at every stage.”

#3 GATHER YOUR TOOLS

Begin by choosing your vessel—a low, wide-mouthed bowl

come together in the end.

Time for the roses! The length that you trim your roses will begin

to establish the arrangement’s overall shape and form. So start long,

will work best for a centerpiece. Snip chicken wire with wire

you can walk around to check in without moving the vase.

#4 PREP YOUR FLOWERS

Prepping your greenery and blooms first makes the actual

arranging faster and more fluid. Using your hands and floral snips,

pluck away any straggly or wilted pieces. Remove any sad buds from

the flowers. Separate the freesia’s stems with white blooms from those with only bright green buds, keeping both sections. To allow your

flowers to absorb the most water, wait to snip their ends until the next step—then snip one at a time, at a 45 degree angle when possible.

#5 ARRANGE YOUR FLOWERS

Now comes the real fun! Bron builds his arrangements in

layers, beginning with the greenery. “The first placement defines

the overall shape. Let the greenery speak to you. If it wants to flop,

Last, place the freesia, starting with the white petal stems. Place

them in clusters to replicate a natural growth pattern. “The shape of the freesia adds fluid movement to the piece. Placing them at high

and low points on either side of the arrangement creates a beautiful optical illusion—almost an elegant S-curve shape,” shares Bron.

For the finishing touch, add in the freesia stems with green buds, standing back periodically to assess and fill any empty spaces. Et voilà! You’ve created a masterpiece!

#6 DISPLAY

For a longer life, Bron suggests no additives in the water.

Instead, change out the water daily using a turkey baster. Now that you’ve created a magazine-worthy centerpiece, give yourself a hug.

You made that—a beautiful, fragrant, and affordable centerpiece to enjoy during the holidays or any season.

TI G H T ENING YOUR HO ME’S

What do letters and your home have in common? They both have envelopes! Just like a folded piece of paper protects your correspondence, your home’s thermal building envelope protects you from the weather outside. The envelope—the exterior “shell” of walls, foundation, roof, doors, and windows—determines how costly it is to heat and cool your home. If it’s airtight and sealed

HOUSE TOUR EAST

What do feng shui, the desert, modern architecture, and cowgirl boots have in

common? This was the riddle interior designer Jenny Slingerland of Black Ink Interiors needed to solve.

Her client, a cowgirl at heart, had recently purchased a newly constructed home in the Rio Verde community, northeast of Scottsdale, Arizona. She enlisted

Slingerland and her team during the construction phase to oversee the entire

project—from selecting finishes (including flooring, cabinetry, appliances, and lighting) to fully furnishing and accessorizing the home.

“This project was really fun and rewarding, but also a little challenging,” shares Designer: Jenny Slingerland Firm: Black Ink Interiors Location: Phoenix, Arizona Instagram: @black.ink.interiors Website: blackinkinteriors.com

Slingerland. “We had to follow the principles of feng shui, which was new for

us.” The floor plan needed to produce a harmonious energetic flow, incorporating elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. This emphasis on eastern design

philosophy had to be balanced with the owner’s western roots and her collection of western art and sculptures.

To achieve this harmony, warm textures and natural finishes were selected. The

kitchen is clad in dark wood cabinetry with a marble tile backsplash that extends all the way to the ceiling. A polished stone island dramatically spills onto the floor with waterfall edges on both sides. Oversized metal and glass pendants

hang between dark wood beams. “The layout of the home is ideal—open kitchen, living, and dining areas with expansive sliding doors so that there is an easy flow between the outdoor and indoor spaces,” explains Slingerland.

In the living room, a gas fireplace is flanked by floating glass shelves, adorned with modern accessories and strong geometric shapes. Patterns in cool tones on the

armchairs and pillows counterbalance the warm wood coffee table. Rustic notes make an appearance in the hair-on hide trim of the cream sectional, and nailhead trim

detailing on various upholstered furnishings like the island stools and dining chairs. Mixed metals dance in a quiet symphony throughout the home. The primary bathroom glistens—a marble and glass enclosed shower serves as the backdrop for the free-

standing soaker tub. Crystal and gold sconces cast a warm glow at night. In a powder

room, modern crystal and champagne gold sconces set against dark wallpaper bring a touch of glamour, delighting each guest who enters.

“My goal is to make sure that the client is comfortable in their home and that they truly love being there with their friends and family,” explains Slingerland. It’s a sophisticated yet cozy and comfortable space for the owner and her extended family to gather. “I

am really proud of what we were able to achieve. We were able to bring in feng shui elements, mixed with her rustic heritage, into this modern home.”

Would this balance of raw and refined work in your home? To add a touch of effortless elegance, try incorporating natural elements like dark woods, tonal textiles, and metals in varying tones of copper, gold, and silver.

To Build or Not to Build? Which a p p roach to b ooksh e lve s is r ig h t for you an d you r h ome? TEXT BY JASMINE BIBLE

Whether you’re a dedicated bibliophile or more of a cereal box reader, we can all agree that bookshelves bring a level of beauty and intrigue to any home. But if your home isn’t already graced with built-in bookshelves, what are your options? We take a look at three approaches: prefabricated, DIY, and fully custom.

Prefabricated Designer: Krystle Perkins

Instagram: @perkinsonparkway When designer Krystle Perkins and her family moved into their

current home, bookshelves were an absolute must for her husband

Michael, an avid reader. (At the last count, his collection topped more than 2,000 books!) The shelving needed to be large, strong, durable, and, of course, stylish.

The beautiful soaring living room ceilings created an interesting

design challenge. “Traditional built-in bookshelves would have felt too heavy and cut the space in half, visually,” explains Perkins. Instead, she searched for something that looked light, airy, and would essentially

disappear. When she found the white wall-mounted bookcases from CB2, she knew they would be the perfect fit. The all-white, steel, powder-coated shelves almost appear to float.

For styling, she began with a few small decorative objects. She placed the books without a particular rhyme or reason just to get them out of their boxes, then sat with them for a bit. “All of the spines felt like they were

competing with one another. It felt like chaotic energy,” describes Perkins. Eager to push the envelope and try a very design-forward approach, she rotated all of the books with the pages facing out (pictured above). “My husband was not a fan,” laughs Perkins. “He found it offensive to the

books themselves and he slowly began turning the books around one at a time. Within a couple of days they were all turned back around.” For the third styling approach (pictured at right), they agreed to a

compromise—the shelves would serve as a design focal point for the

28

home, while still being usable as a library. Since they have another

large bookshelf in their bedroom, Perkins was able to sort the books by color. “A full rainbow approach wouldn’t have worked with the overall color scheme of our home, and an ombre effect would have felt too

formulating,” she shares. An unfussy mix of neutrals felt just right— whites, creams, grays, and blacks, along with muted blues, greens,

and rust. She placed the colors in groups, drawing your eye up and

around the shelves, keeping any one group from overpowering another. She stacked them vertically and horizontally to add dimension, then integrated home decor pieces to warm up the overall feel.

For the decorative objects, Perkins worked in sets of threes, placing

them in geometric triangle shapes, being sure to leave enough negative space to allow the eye a visual resting place. The result is a layered,

interesting, warm, and inviting space. “When I walk in it feels neutral, intentional...purposeful. I really like it, and so does Michael!”

“My best advice for choosing art is simple: Choose from the heart.” - Sanda Stojakovic, Designer

Do-It-Yourself Designer: Sanda Stojakovic

Instagram: @design.playbook According to the IKEA, every five seconds a Billy bookshelf is sold somewhere in the

world. Launched in 1979, it’s a perfect blank canvas, offering sturdiness, affordability, and

endless possible configurations. You can use one or multiples, stack them side-by-side, and add doors and lighting.

Instagram designer Sanda Stojakovic decided to space four of the Billy bookshelves out,

allowing for a glorious abundance of moldings in between and around them. A glance at

Stojakovic’s popular Instagram feed reveals her love for saturated, vibrant colors mixed with a variety of patterns. Her intent for the library was no different: “I have been wanting to create

a library on this 160 inch wall of emptiness for a year now. My goal was to go bold with color and patterns to strike a balance between formality and casual flair.”

This formal living room is the largest room in their Chicago home, yet without a dedicated purpose, it went unused. A busy family of four, “We needed a screen-free zone,” laughs

Stojakovic. She drew up the design and her husband, Uros, who is in construction, helped her frame it out. They added junction boxes for the sconces, plus ornate moldings, shadow boxes, and wainscotting to the adjoining walls. “People often ask why we didn’t build it completely from scratch since he has the tools and the supplies, but purchasing the shelves was a much much cheaper and faster option,” explains Stojakovic.

With the foundation set, Stojakovic was able to focus on the design. For the color, she used Blueberry by Benjamin Moore in the Advance formula finish. “I wanted a color that would read a true blue no matter how gloomy the weather. This color definitely does that. It’s

cozy, vibrant, and happy at all times throughout the day or evening.” The ceiling is coated in

Ambrosia by Benjamin Moore, a warm peach that subtly speaks to the vintage French chairs and drapery fabric, sourced from Calico Corners.

To amp up the cozy factor, she chose a mix of traditional and modern lighting. A crystal

chandelier and ornate ceiling medallion hover in the center of the room, while three unique black and gold tapered arm sconces from Crystorama add an edgy flare. The wallpaper,

Cream Fan by Brewster Ruhlmann, balances the saturated color of the bookshelves and

brings an art deco flare to the room. Pillows in shades of monochromatic blue and oversized artwork complete the room. Stojakovic shares her advice for choosing artwork: “We all try

to follow certain design rules when decorating a space, but with art we should lead with our intuition and choose the piece that makes our heart flutter.” Photos Courtesy of Design Playbook

The next step is contacting a local designer or contractor

Waves crashing and sand between your toes may not be what your mind immediately conjures when you think of winter...but a seaside escape can be unexpectedly cozy if done the right way.

When the new owners of this three-bedroom rental property in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, purchased the home, they took an overall look at the space and knew that it needed to be warmed up. With a few simple but effective changes, they were able to add personality, depth, texture, and warmth to this beautiful lowcountry getaway.

Board and Batten Board and batten siding has always been one of our favorites. Vertical beams with “batten,” a vertical strip of wood covering the seams, became popular in America in the 1840s and was influenced by styles from Sweden and Norway. Classic in its heritage, the strong vertical lines work well today in a modern aesthetic, especially when painted in a striking warm black. HOUSE TOUR Collected Glam Interior designers Caroline Campbell and Erica King of Campbell King Interiors have very different design aesthetics. King prefers an eclectic, collected approach

that transcends a particular genre or style, while Campbell has a masculine, bold, clean, neutral, no-frills style. “It’s the perfect match. We bring balance to one

another,” shares Campbell. This juxtaposition of styles results in a layered and rich design story for their clients, as evident in this Jackson, Tennessee, home.

The clients were downsizing into their forever home—their kids had left the Designers: Caroline Campbell and Erica King Firm: Campbell King Interiors Location: Jackson, TN Instagram:

client reminds me so much of my mom,” laughs King. “Her style is sophisticated, modern, and glamorous.” This instant rapport parlayed into a level of trust between the clients and the design team.

Campbell and King were able to translate the clients’ desire for glitz and glam into an elevated and sophisticated home that still feels inviting. Vintage rugs

add touches of color throughout the home, while the furnishings remain mostly neutral. Traditional pieces with modern lines and unexpected additions like the zebra ottoman make the rooms feel collected and lived-in.

“It can’t all be new if it’s neutral. If you buy everything from a store, it winds up felling lackluster.” - Caroline Campbell, Designer

To keep a neutral space from feeling too cold or sparse, Campbell offers this advice: “It can’t all be new if it’s neutral. If you buy everything from

a store, it winds up feeling lackluster. It won’t feel truly comfortable and will lack a softness.” Instead, find unique vintage pieces that speak to

you. In the foyer, the team used the large wood commode, a beautiful

vintage piece that the owners already had, and paired it with an edgy,

modern light fixture to keep it from feeling too formal. The oversized

patinated mirror bounces the light around the room, making the petite foyer feel larger than it is.

It’s also important to create a mix of affordable staples mixed with

showpieces, like the handmade leather chandelier in the dining room

and the Linden lamp by Kelly Wearstler found in the living room. “It’s the perfect lamp. The finish and scale somehow work well with every style. It’s become a bit of a signature element in a lot of our homes,” laughs King.

Items that the owners purchased on their own include the pendant

light fixtures that now adorn the kitchen island. “The owners saw them while on vacation in New Orleans and fell in love with them,” explains Campbell. They used these sculptural scrolling pendants as a jumping off point in the kitchen to help dictate the direction of some of the

finishes. Shaker cabinets in a soft gray (Revere Pewter by Benjamin

Moore), with polished nickel hardware with polished nickel hardware and stainless steel appliances are paired with a large marble slab

backsplash with lovely wave-like veining. The scene-stealing hood adds a dramatic flair with its varying sheens of silver-hued metals.

“When it comes to design, it’s not just about spaces looking pretty.

You’ll take a room that was rarely used because it lacked purpose, and

with intentional design, it’s suddenly your favorite room in the house. It makes you feel good,” shares King.

Eager to create similar depth in your own home? Campbell and King advise going to local home decor stores like HomeGoods, Marshalls,

Target, and thrift shops to gather accessories that you think might work. Buy twice the amount you think you will need so that you can bring it

into your space and try out different combinations. Layer in art, throws, and pillows to add to the collected feel, mixing genres and textures. Return what you don’t love.
