Welcome to the color issue! The brilliant painter Claude Monet once said, “Color is my day-long obsession, joy, and torment.” While we may not be able to fully comprehend Monet’s torment in his quest to replicate nature’s perfect palette on canvas, we can certainly share his feelings of joy and obsession. Color alone can speak volumes. The perfect shade of azure transports us to the Greek Isles, while a dusty pink brings us back to a desert sunset. The vivid multicolor home showcased in our House Tour (page 16) elicits a sense of joy and whimsy; while it’s safe to say we’re all obsessed with the dark, saturated colors found in our Room Tour (page 32). We’re thrilled to see the overall use of color making a resurgence in home decor. The pendulum has begun to swing back from the white-on-white phase of the past few years—rather than stark white rooms with nary a drop of color, we’re seeing jewel-box rooms dripping in rich tones and spaces utilizing a rainbow palette. We’re finding color everywhere—from the fabric, glass, and metal used by three artists in our Meet the Makers series (page 36), to the rainbow-inspired Cheese Board (page 42) created by food and home stylist, Meg Quinn. PRO RE NATA The Pro Re Nata Farm Brewery in Crozet, VA, has been a local hot spot since it first opened in 2015. A need for additional outdoor space lead to the creation of the container bar. hen Rima Nasser opened her design firm, TEW DESIGN STUDIO, she founded it on the principal that design should be fun, exciting, daring, and visually inspiring. Originally from Palestine, Nasser brings a unique worldly view to each project. With a natural propensity for color, texture, and spatial relationships, she honed her interior design craft first at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, then in Florence, Italy, where she earned her Masters in Interior Design. After settling in Durham, NC, Nasser opened TEW in 2015, filling a niche that was missing from the Triangle marketplace—a bold, colorful, and modern aesthetic. That panache is precisely what drew her latest clients to her. A non-traditional family from Philadelphia, PA, moved into a traditional house in the Preston neighborhood of Cary, NC, and enlisted Nasser to transform the house into a space that matched their personality. Nasser began the project with her three-step process: first, get to know the clients—meet the whole family, learn about their lifestyle, what they like to do, and how they like to spend their time. Second, hear what they would like to change, and get their ultimate wish-list. Lastly, figure out how to help them achieve their goals.

Nasser knew she wanted to create a strong visual impact in the dining room, which is immediately to your left as you enter the home. The client loved the funky wallpaper, Rio by Thibaut. This somewhat traditional pattern feels modern and fresh when done in high contrast black and white. “With a busy wallpaper, you have to be careful what you put on top of it,” explains Nasser. The porcelain deer with red antlers is simple but impactful. The existing intricate mouldings were painted black. The pops of red take it one step further, and the Brynn rug by Chandra ties it all together. The Vickery Chandelier by Arteriors is unexpected and funky, and fits well in the space. For an extra dose of whimsy, she introduced an interesting fabric on the backs of the captains chairs. On the opposite side of the table is a red bench that the client already owned. “If clients are attached to a piece, that’s a great opportunity to refinish or repurpose it,” advises Nasser. 18

Directly across from the dining room is a space dedicated to music. The large-scale black and white striped draperies are mimicked in both of the front rooms, offering some visual continuity. The client was a huge fan of grasscloth wallpaper, so Nasser chose a warm navy blue paper that allows the other elements, like the green chairs by Joybird, to pop. The lamps are a play on a classic shape, but done in a modern glossy finish with oversized shades. The yellow phone was found by Nasser at a vintage shop, and the fun artwork above speaks to the clients who are animal lovers. “When it comes to artwork, the colors have to work, but the subject matter has to be personal to the clients,” shares Nasser. The chevron design on the console unit adds pattern to the room, and echoes the chevron pattern on the fireplace in the adjoining living room. The living room is at the center of the home and ties together many of the elements
and styles used in other rooms. It manages to be both modern and warm, using bold colors and clean, mid-century lines. The once very traditional fireplace was redesigned with the

Throughout the home Nasser has chosen bold objects that make a substantial impact, without feeling fussy or cluttered. Each daring choice somehow manages to create a harmonic symphony. “It’s not just about taking risks, but taking the right risks…I suppose that’s why you hire a professional,” laughs Nasser. The Preston House clients are thrilled with each risk Nasser took, and they should be! The home is truly a colorful, contemporary success. N

BREWERY BHAVANA It’s a dim sum restaurant, it’s a brewery, it’s a bookstore, it’s a flower shop...in a word, it’s magical. We fell head-over-heels with the recently opened Brewery Bhavana in downtown Raleigh, NC. The mammoth space is loosely divided by billowing white draperies. One area is dedicated to the stunning bar with 40-taps, a marble backsplash, and marble bar-top, complete with a waterfall edge. Dining tables fill another area, and a massive sculptural wooden light fixture creates another special private dining zone. Natural light streams in through the skylights. Modern light orbs hang from the ceiling in rows that span the entirety of the building. Large fig trees cast delicate shadows. Bookshelves nearly reach the ceiling, and long, family-style tables are found at the center of it all. Every detail has been thoughtfully and meticulously curated. Draw inspiration for your own home from this bright and welcoming space—the waterfall edge of the bar-top is a dramatic trend we’re loving in kitchens, and the mod light fixtures would be chic hung above a bathroom vanity. JUNCTION The eagerly anticipated and long-awaited opening of Junction restaurant in the Belmont neighborhood of Charlottesville, VA, was worth the wait. The historic building has been restored to its former glory by restaurateur Adam Frazier. “The building started to feel like a turn-of-the-century saloon, thus the idea of doing a modern take on the old west saloon was born,” explains Frazier. Beautiful wood and exposed brick are at the forefront of the two-story venue. Bright white ceiling tins offer a counter balance to the warm tones. avia Forbes and Monet Masters are taking the Atlanta, GA, design market by storm. Their bold approach to design is exactly what hip homeowners are craving. The duo teamed up when they serendipitously crossed paths on a design project, and saw a kindred spirit in one another—they each possess a passion for fearless design that’s both personal and moving to their clients. FORBES + MASTERS was formed, and the results are stunning. Working with both residential and commercial clients, each project elegantly evokes a specific mood. For this Atlanta homeowner, she saw FORBES + MASTERS work on social media and knew they were the perfect designers to transform her bland and boring guest room into a jaw-dropping guest suite. Based on the client’s jet-setting lifestyle, Forbes and Masters decided to create a room that’s reminiscent of a boutique hotel with a retro 1970s glam vibe. Masters explains, “Guest rooms can often be an extension of the home, and sometimes be bland spaces with just a simple bed and sheets with little or no accessories.” Instead, they wanted to create a themed and thoughtful space that would be an exciting treat for guests. Knowing they needed to dress up the entire room including the floors, walls, and ceiling—they utilized large-scale elements that filled the space, but didn’t overcrowd the room. They focused on essentials—the sleeping zone, a lounge area to sit, and a television station. Each piece needed to be iconic when left on its own, but feel cohesive in the room. They began by designing the headboard, wanting it to make a huge visual impact, take up as much space as possible, and enclose the nightstands. A retro emerald green fabric with vertical lines and texture was used to
create the massive channel-tufted bed. Minimal nightstands from West Elm flank the bed, and a pair of retro-style brass light fixtures hang from the ceiling, drawing the eye upwards, and saving valuable limited space on the nightstands. The Jim Thompson fabric used on the face of the custom pillows dictated the strict color palette, while the fringe edging added a fun detail. The oversized leopard print rug was the largest size they could order without going custom, saving the client money. Forbes shares, “Every room in the house calls for a different budget and level of intention.” The matching set of pleated velvet chairs, also by West Elm, creates a lounge area that complements the custom bench finished in a Larson fabric, Douglas in yellow green. For the television area, new brass hardware was added to the console, creating a one-of-a-kind feature, that pairs nicely with the sleek brass light fixtures. NEST MAGAZINE | SPRING 2018

Natural elements are used throughout the space—on the console sits a bone-inlay box, ostrich eggs, and even a whale bone. They built the sculpture above the bed from dried grape wood. “We always add odd curiosities,” shares Masters. The Westside Market in Atlanta is one of their favorite places to source these beautiful artifacts and interesting pieces. Perhaps the most impactful component of the entire space is the black walls. What looks like wallpaper is actually a stencil by Cutting Edge Stencils, Forbes and Masters’ favorite stencil maker. They share their secret, “To get the look of a high-end wallpaper, start with flat paint as your base, then stencil with a high gloss paint in the same color.” For this room, they used Limousine Leather by Behr on the walls and ceiling, and added the stencil to all four walls. We’re obsessed with the results. Any guest would be thrilled to visit this bold and sumptuous space. N

orn and raised in Richmond, VA, Unicia Buster is ever the consummate artist. There is an ease about her, juxtaposed with an undercurrent of energy—as if at any moment her next brilliant idea will bubble up to the surface. Her upbeat attitude and positive outlook on life is palpable, and her humble nature is endearing, if not surprising, given her accomplishments. Buster earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, and her Master of Arts degree from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. She’s received various awards, completed an internship at the VMFA (Virginia Museum of Fine Art), and has taken classes in every artistic discipline you can imagine— ceramics, stained glass, sculpture, silkscreening, drawing, painting, and photography. “Each of those classes were wonderful with brilliant instructors, but I realized my interest lay more in crafting than fine art. With crafting, it’s tangible. Here’s a project—let’s make it.” An 8-foot by 11-foot quilt that she completed as her senior thesis at Cornell was prominently displayed at the Richmond Public Library on Franklin Street from 2003 - 2016. This passion for art began at the age of 8, and now at age 40, art has organically woven itself into every facet of her life. Buster was a graphic designer for 10 years with the Richmond Free Press, and more recently served as the art specialist at VCU Health where she curated gallery exhibitions and the
hospital’s permanent art collection. While working directly with patients, using arts and crafts projects to help with dexterity, boredom, stress, and anxiety, she discovered that some patients were especially receptive to adult coloring books. But in working with many African-American patients, she discovered there was a lack of diversity in the offerings. So she created her own. She’s now published two adult coloring books: Coloring Curls, and Coloring Curls 2, both available on Amazon. There are coils, curls, and afros, mixed with mandalas, patterns, and shapes. Buster’s celebration of afros is also seen in her “Hair Naturally” series—a compilation of quilted wall hangings, photographs, paintings, and drawings that honors the beautiful texture and patterns found in afros. I ask Buster about continuing to find inspiration for her art. “You have to push your medium. If there are a billion artists, how can you make your art stand out? How can it be different from the rest? To be a true artist, you have to push it further.” She recently completed a year-long project, “Afros 365” where she created a new depiction of an afro each day for a year. There were everything from drawings, painting, doodles, sculptures made from noodles, arranged sea shells, and lines drawn in the sand. The challenge was to physically make something every single day. When it comes to debating what is or isn’t art, her philosophy is one she learned from a mentor: “Anything can be your medium. It’s what you do with it that becomes art.” N

Bernstein explains that other than the tools being motorized, the technique of sculpture hasn’t changed since ancient times—chipping and chiseling at an object to create a form. What was once a dingy pool hall has been transformed into a bright open space north of the River Arts District in Asheville, NC. It’s here that Bernstein creates his one-of-a-kind, award-winning glass sculptures. “I love what I do. e can’t all throw tiny bolts of lightning on a daily basis. Then again, we can’t all be welder RC Cobin. With a warm smile and a deep tan, Cobin embodies the salt-life spirit—he seems easy going, serene, and fulfilled. Born and raised in New Jersey, Cobin headed south in 1995, with dreams of becoming a writer. With his typewriter in tow, he headed down the coast and through Virginia and North Carolina. “I stopped when I ran out of beach,” Cobin chuckles. He knew he could branch out from the marine-grade pieces he had been welding for boats, and build one-of-a-kind pieces of art, furniture, even bikes. Cheese Board Summer soirées are right around the corner—what better way to brighten up your event than with a gorgeous cheese board? We asked food and home stylist, Meg Quinn, to show us how to create the perfect rainbow-inspired cheese board.
FRESH FRUITS & VEGGIES
DRIED FRUITS
While we may call them cheese or charcuterie boards, fruits and veggies play a vital role in the creation of a balanced and beautiful board, by adding color and texture. It’s also nice to be mindful of guests who don’t eat meat or cheese, or those who may want a healthy option. When selecting your fruits, go for whole fruits that will hold up for a few hours, versus cut fruit.
Dried fruits are essentially concentrated sugar, and are a great compliment to the savory items on the board. Dried Persimmons These vibrant beauties from Trader Joe’s taste like
candy and are a fun shape and color. Dried Assorted Berries A pretty mix of dried strawberries,
cherries, cranberries, and blueberries.
Raspberries These will stay fresh for hours, and have a great texture.
Dried banana slices These sweet treats provide a crunchy texture.
Red and green grapes A cheese board staple. Be sure they are seedless! Cucumbers Go for the Persian or English variety, sliced ¼” thick. Carrots Les Petite tri-colored carrots from Trader Joe’s are ideal, as

opposed to baby carrots that look a bit basic. Sort them by color, and place alongside like-colored items.
Who doesn’t love fancy nuts? These can also be used as a filler at the end of your board assembly.
CHEESES Choose 3-4 various cheeses with different textures and consistency—hard, semi-firm, soft, along with a mix of cow’s milk, goat’s milk, and sheep’s milk cheeses. Kerrygold Dubliner This affordable Irish sharp cheddar has the
perfect artisanal look when placed in rugged slices. Brie This classic soft cheese is a must for any cheese board—choose a
double or triple cream brie. Place as a whole wedge. Manchego This Spanish style cheese is aged longer and has a buttery
texture. Slice and fan out evenly from the center. Blue Blue cheese has a sharp taste that some may love, some may hate... but looks beautiful on the rainbow cheese board!
MEATS Meats provide the salty, savory counterpoint to the rich cheeses. Italian Dry Salami These thinly sliced rounds are perfect for
creating “salami roses” on your platter. Simply fold the round in half, then in half again and place it with the point down onto the board. Tightly fill-in as many roses as space allows. Chianti Red Wine Artisan Salami This Trader Joe’s salami log
should be sliced into ¼” thick pieces, with the casing removed.
Marcona Almonds Available in a rosemary flavor at Trader Joe’s, these are perfectly salty and savory. Candied Pecans These offer a sweet note. Pistachios Be sure to shell these before setting out!
ACOUTREMENTS To really elevate your board, there are a few high-end items that will take it to the next level! Quince Paste A sweet jelly made from the pulp of a quince fruit, it pairs perfectly with the Manchego it’s sitting beside. Slice into even rectangles and fan out. If you can’t find quince paste, a fig jam is a great substitute. Castelvetrano Olives These smooth and buttery olives are a
crowd-pleaser, not quite as tangy as greek olives. Cornichons These tiny pickles are cute and fun to eat.
GARNISH Every board needs a finishing garnish that will hold up for hours. Parsley and mint wilt too quickly, instead try heartier pieces like lavender and rosemary sprigs, pine nuts, or lemon slices. Rosemary Springs These aromatic springs are perfect for placing on top of brie, around edges, and filling in any empty holes.

There’s something special about staying in a boutique hotel room. A sense of ease comes over you, allowing you to instantly relax and be present in the moment. Imagine if you could replicate that same feeling in your own home. We visited the Graduate Hotel in Charlottesville, VA, the Quirk Hotel in Richmond, VA, and the 21c Museum Hotel in Durham, NC. Each of these hotels have a different style, but achieve the same serene response. We’ve taken notes from each and discovered six commonalities that you can use to replicate this vibe in your house.
1. SYMMETRY A balanced arrangement of objects and the negative space around them is naturally pleasing to the eye. A matching set of nightstands, lamps, and a rug centered under the bed sets a solid foundation.

6. CLUTTER FREE Time to declutter! This may be the hardest rule to achieve, but will make the largest difference without costing you a penny. Remove everything that isn’t absolutely necessary. This twice-annual trade show allows industry insiders, interior designers, and buyers to preview upcoming lines from manufacturers and scope the latest trends. More than 2,000 showrooms across 180 buildings flaunt everything from light fixtures to furniture, fabrics, rugs, and every accessory in between. So what were the highlights? We’re seeing lots of luxe textures (hello velvet!), saturated colors (goodbye white-on-white), sleek lines (mid-century modern still reigns supreme), and even some edgy, fashion-forward pieces that are allowing homeowners to express their individuality (see ya later cookie-cutter)!
