e have always been told never to judge a book by its cover. However, when it comes to creating high impact curb appeal nothing beats a drop dead gorgeous faรงade. Handy homeowners do not need to shell out tens of thousands of dollars either to give their property a quick magazine cover-worthy makeover. Achieving those upscale looks that grace popular home design magazines has never been more attainable these days as a result of the many choices of easy-toinstall and realistic faux trim and siding materials available in the market today. 10 I IDEAS SPRING 2014

R FAST FACTS ON FACADES: The appeal of real wood, stone and brick lie in the innate beauty of their natural hues, grains and pattern. These materials are also naturally long lasting. “Nothing beats the look and impact of the real thing,” says Michael Repic, project site supervisor for custom builder Walden Home Designs which specializes in upscale renovations as well as knockdown and rebuild projects. However, the advantages of natural materials come at a premium. A 500-square foot (sf) wall done in natural stone, for example, could easily cost around $15,000. Prices may vary depending on location, manufacturer and dealer, but on average natural siding materials cost around: • Natural stone - $25 to upwards of $35/sf • Real brick - $12 to $17/sf • Real stone and brick veneer - $11 to $15/sf • Stucco - $4 to $9/sf • Hardwood - $3.5 to $8/sf • Wood shakes and shingle siding - $5 to 7.40/sf • Cedar - $2 to $4/sf Do-it-yourself (DIY) homeowners also need to consider the labour associated with these materials.
Natural wood needs to be stained and sealed and regular maintenance after that to protect it from the elements. Real stone can also weigh as much as 15lbs/sf. Installation of bricks and stone also require mortar and masonry skills as opposed to engineered stone or polyurethane-based substitutes than can be easily attached to existing walls with clips and fasteners. FANTASTIC FAUX FACADES: “For many DIYers, having to deal with the cleanup alone of working with mortar can be quite a hassle,” says Eric Hensel, Ontario sales representative of Fusion Stone, a brand of manufactured stone siding product aimed specifically at the DIY market. Manufactured or engineered stone is typically made from crushed stones bound
together by polymer resin. It is cast into slabs or brick-sized pieces that are affixed with fasteners on aluminum strips that attach to an existing wall. Manufactured stone comes in a variety of textures and colours that emulate the look and feel of real stone. InStone Products manufactures a cement-based engineered stone inte-
rior and exterior siding material called PaneledStone. “PaneledStone is an eco-friendly stone panel made from 99% pre-consumer waste,” says Dustin Wilson, president of InStone. “It weighs only about 5lbs/sf and is easily nailed or screwed to an existing surface.” The company also manufactures a

polyurethane-based siding, faux stone panel called Quality Stone. In Western Canada, screw-on manufactured brick sidings are very popular, says Gary Coleman, national account manager for CanWel Building Materials. The company’s Novabrik mortarless brick siding comes in strips that can be screwed onto an anchoring frame attached to an exterior wall. Manufactured stone and brick as well as polyurethane-based faux stone siding cost around $10 to $15/sf. Homeowners need to lay down some form or vinyl wrap or moisture barrier to an exterior wall before installing these products. CanWel sells the popular cement board product James Hardie fibre cement siding. Hardie boards are made to look like natural wood, but they do not need to be stained or painted to resist rot resistant and the elements. They come in a variety of colours and are available in lap siding, shingle and vertical siding styles. The product sells for about $3.50 to $4/sf. Priced at around $2 to $3/sf, vinyl siding is probably one of the cheapest siding materials on the market.
It has also come a long way in terms of looks and durability, according to Catherine Quezel, product manager for construction material supplier, Duchesne. “Duchesne’s Newport line of acrylic finish vinyl siding comes in 24 colours including the more sought after trendy dark shades like cocoa brown, charcoal grey and cobalt blue,” Quezel says. “Many new homeowners and DIYers like vinyl because it is low maintenance, easy to install and does not rust or rot.” The product has a very clear wood grain imprint and the acrylic coat makes Newport’s colours long lasting, says Quezel. It also comes with a lifetime warranty. Kaycan Ltd.’s Perfection Shingles line of vinyl siding is known for its faithful reproduction of cedar grains and its durability, says Wade O’ Reilly, product specialist for the company. “The natural texture is moulded from real cedar and all of the available 27 shades are fade resistant,” he says. “This product is so tough it has a wind load resistance of 220 mph.” The company also sells vinyl faux shutters and other decorative trim such as arch tops, gable vents, mount blocks as wells as window and door headers. Another low-cost siding alternative is aluminum. The product sells for about $2.50 to $3.50/sf.

MIX AND MATCH: There is no need to wrap your home in expensive materials to obtain that upscale look, according to Rambod Nasrin, president of home design firm Upside Development. For those who desire high style, but also want to cut cost, Nasrin suggests using less expensive siding materials on least visible parts of the house and installing the high-end material for the facade. In more traditional home designs
stone or engineered stone veneers are only sparingly used especially if the house is not large, notes Repic. “One rule of thumb though is to avoid using a lot of small pieces on a big expanse of surface as it will look too busy,” says Repic. “Stay away from huge pieces when working on a small home.” ACCENTUATE AND ACCESSORIZE: Fences and gates are highly functional outdoor elements that can spice up a home’s facade. Authentic wrought iron fences can be real show stoppers, but with a price tag of around $500 per linear foot (lf), they can stop a lot of homeowners dead on their tracks.
material for porches and balconies in many modern homes. LIV Outdoor offers a tempered glass panel called Invisirail which serves as a sturdy but see-through railing for porches, balconies and even fences. Exterior lighting is an often overlooked strategy for adding an element of drama to a home’s facade when the dark sets in, according to Cristina Ayi, director of marketing for electronics product company Coleman Cable. Coleman Cable offers many economical lighting choices from timer and remote controlled electrical wall mounted lights to solar powered garden lights. For strictly aesthetic applications, Ayi

Although rust and rot resistant, aluminum can get dented and it tends to be noisy during a downpour. On the plus side, in densely packed urban areas, aluminum’s fire resistant quality can be an added bonus.
Nuvo Iron of Bolton, Ont. manufactures a convincing facsimile of the real thing out of less expensive tubular iron material that can be bent into intricate designs, but still cost just $30 to $40/lf. An even less expensive option is polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or vinyl fencing. This type of fence sells for around only $20/lf. Plastival, makers of railing and fence systems, moulds vinyl to resemble wood fence panels. The material is treated with ultra violet stabilizers to create a tough finish that can stand up against the elements and scratches, according to Christian Lepage, sales director for Plastival. A porch or balcony can also help dress up a home’s facade. In lieu of the standard wood railing and deck materials, Goodfellow Inc. also sells wood composite planks called Fiberon. Composite wood is made of recycled wood fibres of chips, plastic and a binding agent. It can be manufactured to look like cedar, pine redwood and other popular species. The product resists moisture and termites. Composite typically sells for around $18 to $25/lf. In the last few years, tempered glass has become a favourite railing
suggest keeping lighting to a minimum and using pin lights or soft focus lights to bring attention to an interesting focal point or two of the facade instead of washing out the whole area with illumination. “The idea is to pique one’s interest not flood the senses,” she says. SPRING 2014 IDEAS I 13

ou have upgraded your kitchen and bathroom and built a mammoth-sized deck for summer (and winter) barbecues, so what is next? Considering the amount of time you may be spending in it lately, maybe it is time to build that dream garage. Sure, garages have been pulling double duty as vehicle storage and make-shift workshops for decades, but lately they are becoming so much more: “man caves” and secondary family rooms, craft stations, even barbecue prep-stations. “The idea of the garage being used just as a garage is gone by the wayside for many people,” says Travis Reynolds, national marketing manager for Steel-
BY LAWRENCE CUMMER
Craft Door Products Ltd. “People are now looking to customize not only what is inside the garage, but also what is outside. “In the past the garage door has been treated like an afterthought. Certainly in the last few years, though, with garage doors becoming such a large part of the home’s face, homeowners are becoming more selective.” Manufacturers are stepping up with a wider selection of styles, materials and features. Reynolds points to two trends in particular that are currently popular with Canadian homeowners: Overhead doors that look like wood but are made of steel, and darker texture doors.

Garages are home to more than your vehicle, is it time to look at the upgrades that will build your dream garage?

To meet the demand for darker doors, Steel-Craft has turned to an organic coating technology to allow darker colours in its Elite series of garage doors. The coating reflects the sun’s rays to avoid excessive heat build-up. “It may sound insignificant, but the amount of heat that is typically absorbed by a dark door will create a lot of energy over time and the door will start to warble and dilapidate,” Reynolds says. “This new technology prevents that, allowing for blacks and charcoals and other colours.” Outside of these current trends, Reynolds offers advice about what to look for when picking out the perfect door for your dream garage: Insulation: Polyurethane insulation over polystyrene or Styrofoam insulation. Warranty: Make sure the warranty is well backed and “tried and true.” When it comes to aesthetics, gone are the days when garage doors only contained a small run of simple glass lites across the top. If your dream garage is being used as an entertainment room, insulating qualities become that much more important to ensure comfort, but you should also look at the noise level of the door. For someone with enough mechanical skill installing a new garage door may be easy enough, but could be a days-long project. For that reason, and to make sure installs are perfect and safe, Reynolds recommends garage doors be installed by an authorized dealer.

THE DOOR WITH MORE

While ceilings can be hidden by the door they do not need to be overlooked, especially for those who love to spend their time tinkering in the garage or who use it as a car showroom, says John Hudson, Canadian sales manager for retail ceilings at Armstrong World Industries Inc. “I have been in garages where people have put in a drop ceiling because they have a really nice car and want it to go into an equally nice garage,” he says. “Sometimes just stained plywood or plain 2x4 fissured tiles (like those found in offices) are sufficient.” To go beyond a more traditional, plain look, Hudson suggests considering more decorative ceiling tile options, of which a plethora are available today. Even a small change from what people are used to seeing can make a huge difference. For example, one of the fastest ways to change the look of a ceiling is to swap 2x4 tiles for 2x2 tiles. “This is popular, because 2x4 tiles are associated with the past,” he says. “I have seen some amazing garage ceilings designed using more decorative tiles. They are usually extensions of the look and appearance of the house interior. They help add consistency throughout the home.” Even with an abundance of decorative options available, form should follow function in a garage ceiling. shop? Noise reduction qualities may also help to keep your neighbours happy. Ceiling manufactures define noise-cancelling properties in a number of ways: Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) measures the overall sound absorption of the material when used in an enclosed space where sound is being reflected at many angles. An NRC less than 0.50 is poor, while one greater than 0.80 is very good. Ceiling Attenuation Class (CAC) represents the ability for a ceiling system to act as a barrier for airborne sound transmission, ALUMINUM – For those keeping sound from traveling. Three main garage door materials Each have their advantages and disadvantages:
WOOD – Popular in some regions of Canada, wood remains the material of choice in the Greater Toronto Area, for example. Wood is the most cost-effective option, but not as durable as other options and requires high maintenance.
STEEL – More durable and stronger than wood, steel is now only slightly more expensive. The insulation in steel doors provides a thermal barrier for increased comfort and reduced energy costs.

block more noise. An STC rating change of +/- 10 makes the sound half or twice as loud. Special care must be taken when creating a top-notch garage floor, since it will likely be housing a car and prone to slush, dirt and heat. Even if doubling as a family room, this is obviously not the place for shag carpeting. Still, that does not mean that the slab must lay bare and unadorned. Epoxy coating such as those offered by Rust-Oleum can add sheen to your dream garage’s floor, and are easy to apply to any unfinished cement floor. “It not only beautifies the space, but it protects the garage floor as well,” says Kristen Oates, brand manager for high-performance coatings at Rust-Oleum Consumer Brands Canada. “As outdoor living has grown, specifically in the garage, so too has the demand for these coatings.” Oates says her company’s EpoxyShield, comes in tan and gray, and is a two-coat system that offers greater durability than concrete floor paint. Specifically, it adheres better to resist peeling and prevent the “hot-tire pickup” from cars, but also from motorcycles, lawn mowers and snow blowers. The chemicals used are environmentally-friendly, odorless, and the coatings are impact and abrasion resistant to handle heavy foot and vehicle traffic. Decorative colour chips can be added and mixed and matched for a very personal style.

WHAT’S IN THE BOX? A dream garage is only as good as what goes into it. For multi-use garages, order, organization and flexibility are the call signs to follow. “A dream garage is something you are proud of, so it needs to be clean and organized,” says Yvonne Chan, associate category manager for hand tools, automotive and storage at Stanley Black & Decker Inc. “You want to be able to show it off.” A few things can help. The DeWalt ToughSystem storage unit, for example, can simplify tool storage. Made up of three modular storage units and a metal carrier, it can efficiently store a DIYer’s tools for stress-free searching. The DeWalt TStak organizer is a smaller, more portable option ideal for indoor use; a trolley launching this year will bring this system greater mobility. What then should go in the toolbox? Here Chan shares a couple recommendations, each based on application. For automotive work, as well as a good socket
set, you are, of course, going to need a good compressor. Black & Decker’s Matrix multitool has changeable attachments that drill, cut, sand, but also an air-inflator attachment for use on the bikes, car tires or pool toys that may call the garage home. For more general handiwork, the DeWalt 12Volt 4-Tool Combo kit features a pivot reciprocating saw designed to make difficult cuts in confined spaces; a 3/8” drill/driver with two-speed transmission; a ¼” impact driver with three LED lights that provide shadowfree visibility; and, an LED work light that offers 510 lumens of hands-free light. All work with the same 12V batteries and the kit includes two of them. “You are not going to be doing everything at the same time, so it helps to have a single platform that is interchangeable,” Chan says. “If I need to get a tool going, I can take the battery from the flashlight and put it in the impact driver, get going on my job, then recharge in the bay.” SPRING 2014 IDEAS I 23
