Startup of the Year nominations Benjamin Fisher Beu

“

This startup is formed of young graduates with big ideas for the future of the hair and beauty industry. Designing and building the app over the last couple of years has been an extremely challenging learning curve, which they have navigated with professionalism and creativity. Many issues have had to be overcome during the course of this business development, from pitching for investment to managing a dev team abroad. There have been many personal and financial sacrifices that had to be made to get Beu to this point, but the business has never suffered. They have been making big steps in the last year, appearing at international beauty exhibitions, signing up the first wave of salons and securing further funding to develop the app's capabilities. There is seemingly no limit to how successful this startup could be, especially considering the size and scope of the industry it taps into, in a way that hasn't been tried before. I think they will amount to great things over the next few years.

There have been many barriers for this startup, but they have been determined, persistent and have succeeded with whatever they have wanted to achieve. They have real potential to grow and I have faith they will continue to learn and achieve their ambitions in the near future. I feel as though they deserve to win this award for having a positive impact on whatever client they worked with. This is clearly shown through there being no real negative said about this company, only helpful and desired constructive criticism that has been taken on board to further improve the experience of any future client later on. Winning this award will give them the platform and exposure to help an even larger amount of people with their various skills and knowledge of production.

Startup of the Year nominations Symone D’Rozario D’Rozario

D'Rozario has emerged into a highly competitive environment but been able to gasp a different angle that no one else has yet to achieve. Not only are her designs meticulously produced, but she adds an edgy almost comic relief to the images on her products. One of her sketches labeled 'card games and corruption', shows an alternative take on a frog, skeleton, fox & tiger playing cards, which leaves the viewer to be able to interpret it in a number of manners. This style makes her individual, giving her so much room for growth and to play with ideas for the customer, whilst she takes more of these designs and produces them into striking fashion pieces. Her end products are made with so much care for ethics and being sustainable into the future that the customer is in a win win situation. Not only are they purchasing a unique product but they are also supporting a dedicated designer who makes high quality environmentally viable choices every time.

Startup of the Year nominations Symone D’Rozario D’Rozario

I really love the idea of moving the art to the clothes. Her drawings are amazing, the stamps and the embroideries are like looking at paints in an art gallery and i think this new concept is unique. I love the fact that she mades the drawings and embroideries herself, there is a lot of talent there and should be recognized. D’Rozario is like bringing back the old times (techniques) but with the modern style.

Startup of the Year nominations Benjamin Fisher Beu

Beu has been designed with the sole aim of solving problems in the hair and beauty industry for salons, their clients and the growing number of self-employed who now work in the sector. Beu started as an idea when it’s founder was walking around Portsmouth and couldn’t find anywhere to get his haircut. Chancing a random salon, he was left disappointed when he walked out. Thinking there must be a better way to help clients make a more informed decision when choosing a hairdresser or beauty therapist, he set about assembling an all-star team to build out this vision. Fast forward many months, a huge amount of hard work and aggressively pursuing every opportunity available, Beu has now tested the first version of its platform in a top rated Knightsbridge salon, received angel investment, won a Santander bursary through the University of Portsmouth and has attracted a fair amount of press. Moving into 2019 they look to grow, starting with the Professional Beauty exhibition in February where they will be displaying Beu to 40,000 potential clients. Aside from providing clients and salons a better booking and management experience, it is the 163,000 UK based self-employed professionals who look to benefit the most.

“

I had no idea how to start and run a business when I left university! Over the last 7 months I have learnt so much on my own with networking and researching. Going straight into my business being my sole income has been a massive challenge but I love it! I have started to gains a steady growth of online sales, have my work sold in two local shops and have taken part in several local, collaborative exhibitions. Now I am working with the Prince's Trust to become successfully self employed and I got a call from Etsy headquarters and Liberty London to be featured in their spring catalogues (very exciting). My next goal is to have a stall at a trade show and try to sell my products to some more independent shops and widen my sales area! I am very passionate about my business and hope to be doing it for a very long time.

Startup of the Year nominations Symone D’Rozario D’Rozario

The ethos of D'Rozario Design is very much in tune with our growing understanding that we can't continue to strip the planet of resources. It is fashion with a conscience. More importantly, it is a start up created and run by Someone who has faced challenges to getting this far. Symone became a single mum at 17, and despite the challenges of having a baby at such a young age, she went to college, she worked for several years to support herself and her son and then eventually made the huge decision to relocate herself and her son so that she could attend the University of Portsmouth. She is single minded and driven. She is determined to succeed and deserves a break!

Startup of the Year nominations Mohammed Alatoum Yotta Solutions “It has contributed to the entrepreneurship ecosystem by launching 3 initiatives between early 2017 and 2019. The first was called Yotta Startups Initiative that supported 25 startups that had no financial backing by expanding their outreach online and building their websites for free. This lead to exponential growth of the revenue generated by the startups. The second was called Yotta Webmasters Boot Camp that was a 3-months long course that supported over 100+ startups that had no knowledge of web development and design at the beginning of the course, and finishing it with the ability and skill of building a professional website for themselves. The third was called Yotta Webmasters Bootcamp, which was a group of online educational videos that help the startups in understanding how to market themselves online, in addition to giving guidance, tips and pieces of advice on how to build a professional website and reach the targeted audience on the web. Recently, it launched a project called Yotta Venture that aims to partner with promising UK and International startups by offering them web packages that fulfill the digital needs for online growth, which allows them to have a tech company as their backbone to develop their businesses and increase their exposure digitally.
