STEVENAGE IS A TOWN AND BOROUGH IN HERTFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND

Located approximately 30 miles (50 km) north of London. It is known for being the first of the postWorld War II new towns in the UK, planned under the New Towns Act of 1946. Stevenage was designed as a new town to alleviate housing congestion in London and provide a better living environment for residents.

COMPREHENSIVE AMENITIES AND INFRASTRUCTURE:

The proposal reuses the current BHS building foundations to minimize groundwork and environmental impact. The new structure follows the existing grid to ensure proper load distribution, resulting in two residential wings connected by a central core.

A courtyard is introduced to bring light into the building’s depths, with areas receiving either morning or evening sun. The design allows the building to rise to 11 storeys, creating a visual transition from lower buildings to the taller Ibis Hotel.

The top three floors are set back, reducing the building’s mass at street level and allowing balconies with views. This setback aligns with the Ibis Hotel, maintaining scale and light on the street. The façade is divided into six vertical sections to break up the building’s form, with staggered sections creating a dynamic appearance.

FACADE DESIGN

CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE | 3 SPECIFIC ZONES

The proposal’s façade reflects Stevenage’s modernist aesthetic with a contemporary twist, featuring a defined grid that adds proportion and regularity. It is divided into three zones: the primary grid, recessed crown, and ground floor. The primary grid alternates a solid double-storey pattern, adding visual interest, while the recessed top three floors use a darker material and include balconies.

The ground floor, with wide glazed bays, creates strong street interaction and active frontage. The east and west facades are mostly blank for future developments but maintain minimal design elements for visual continuity.
