Welcome From netball Australia Hello and welcome to the 2017 Constellation Cup – showcasing great netballing rivalry between Australia and New Zealand. Australia’s Samsung Diamonds are current title holders and will put everything on the line over the next two tests as they defend their 2016 Constellation Cup victory. There is much more at stake in 2017 as both teams utilise this series to extend and fine-tune their preparation for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. We saw how competitive international netball has become during the recent Netball Quad Series, and our Samsung Diamonds are ready for the next challenge. Following tests in Auckland and Invercargill last week, the winner of the
series will be determined across our Adelaide and Sydney test matches. Thank you to our broadcast partners, Nine and Telstra; and our commercial partners - including naming rights partner, Samsung, and major partners, Suncorp and Nissan; for their support of the 2017 Constellation Cup. There is no doubt the 2017 Constellation Cup will be a hotly contested, athletic spectacle. I look forward to seeing our passionate Samsung Diamonds fans, dressed proudly in green and gold, cheering their role models on. Go Samsung Diamonds!!

Welcome From SOUTH AUSTRALIA It is with great pleasure the South Australian Government welcomes the 2017 Constellation Cup to Adelaide. We are honoured to host the first Australian fixture of the 2017 Constellation Cup. Netball is an exciting sport, and the opportunity to host this match further cements our status as Australia’s best events state. The State Government is putting in record amounts of money to ensure we have topclass facilities and encourage participation in sport across South Australia. In this year’s State Budget, our $7.7 million investment in netball supports upgrading the Priceline Netball Stadium at Mile End as well as the nearby Adelaide Parklands facilities. In addition, women’s participation in sport is being supported with a $24 million investment in female change room facilities, including $500,000 at the Titanium Security Arena.
investment in tourism to promote South Australia interstate and overseas. This investment has seen our visitor economy reach a record high $6.3 billion, with the international visitor economy exceeding $1 billion for the first time. South Australia was also recognised by Lonely Planet as a top five region to visit during 2017. Any match featuring the world’s two greatest teams is always guaranteed to keep us on the edge of our seats. I wish both teams all the best for the 2017 Constellation Cup tonight in Adelaide and for the final game of the series in Sydney.
Leon Bignell MP Minister for Tourism Minister for Recreation and Sport
The State Government’s additional $96 million investment into sport and recreation across South Australia during the past two years has also been matched by an additional $70 million

Five Minutes with Emily… 1. How did you feel when you stepped onto court for the first time in the gold dress during the Quad Series? “The first game where I got to stand out on the transverse line, arm in arm with all of the girls was pretty special. That for me is something I will remember for a very long time. To be able to get out there and get some court time was so surreal. The process from getting into the squad, to being elevated to the team to actually getting on court, happened so quickly. It’s only now that I have been able to reflect and take it all in.” 2. There’s quite a few familiar faces in the Diamonds team that you play with at the Vixens – has this helped you transition into the Diamonds? “It’s really exciting as a Vixens group that we are getting recognised for all of the hard work we did in Suncorp Super

Netball. It’s a really nice reward for everyone and has helped me transition into that Diamonds environment. We can bounce off each other with bits of advice and look out for each other. It has something that has been beneficial to me.” 3. What’s your earliest memory of netball? “I started playing netball when I was six in Drysdale. I used to wear my trackies and jumper under my netball uniform, because it used to be freezing. When the ball was at the other end I would just sit down with my opponent and just talk to them.”

Powerful midcourter Shannon Francois has left her mark on the centre bib for the New Zealand Silver Ferns. The 26-year-old made her debut in 2013 against the Australian Diamond in Adelaide, and has since made a name for herself as a no-frills player who goes about her business.
She formed a strong combination with fellow Silver Fern Gina Crampton at a domestic level, helping the Steel win the inaugural Grand Final. A valuable asset to the Silver Ferns during the Netball Quad Series, all eyes will be on Francois and how she will perform during the Constellation Cup.
A qualified pharmacist, it was her time at university that allowed her the opportunity to join the Southern Steel in 2012, kickstarting her professional netball career. Francois is a Commonwealth Games and Netball World Cup silver medallist, her speed and athleticism features of her game.

RY THAT A RIVAL NED N HAS SPA CENTURY A T ALMOS
VS
These two rival countries first met on a netball court on August 20, 1938 in Melbourne, and ever since have held a strong and fierce rivalry which has only strengthened in current years. With games often being won by the smallest of margins, when the International Netball Federation ranked top two netball teams face off, combined with the natural Trans-Tasman rivalry that exists – the contest is guaranteed to be electric. With a current 62% winning percentage over New Zealand, the Australian team dominated early on from 1938 until the early 60s and 70s, when the New Zealand team’s abilities began to strengthen. Fast forward to the early 2000’s, the kiwis began to consecutively beat the Aussies and then since 2010 Australia has had the momentum. The two teams regularly finish with close scores, with the majority of games being won by a winning margin of between 1 and 5 goals. A few games in more recent years have gone into extra time, including the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010, which went into double extra time – the first and only instance of this occurring and breaking the record for longest netball game ever. There are numerous arguments around where this intense rivalry came from, not just within netball but various sporting codes. With similar competitive natures, being close neighbours and excelling in similar sports, a rivalry such as this was inevitable, and has certainly lifted the profile of the game. The quality of performance and athleticism on show is also arguably unrivalled by any other country in the world, which is what makes watching these two teams taking to court so entertaining.

Bassett capped off the inaugural Suncorp Super Netball season with her first national league premiership, a win with Sunshine Coast Lightning. She broke her personal best international record in the third test of the Constellation Cup, with 55 goals from 64 attempts at 86% accuracy in 2016. Bassett is the most experienced member of the 2017/18 Samsung Diamonds squad.
A strong force in the Diamonds midcourt, Simpson has the ability to shut a player completely out of the game. Her drive for the ball is unrivalled, and her dogged defence caused numerous game-changing turnovers across the 2016 international season. Simpson was named Liz Ellis Diamond winner at the 2017 Australian Netball Awards, netball’s highest accolade.
After debuting in England in 2013, Brandley made her return to the international stage in January 2016. She made the move from Perth to Melbourne in 2017 to join Magpies Netball, combining with fellow Diamonds defender Sharni Layton. Brandley and Layton’s connection has never been stronger. The reliable defender is an exciting workhorse with an impressive leap.
Young gun Courtney Bruce made her Australian Netball debut in the 2017 Netball Quad Series, playing the whole game in an impressive MVP performance. The defender has stamped her authority in Fever’s defensive end, her determination to get to every ball a feature of her game. No stranger to the international stage, Bruce was named the 2016 Fast5 Player of the Year.

Liz Watson has had the season of her career. The wing attack was a formidable force in the Melbourne Vixens’ attacking line, notching up a career and league high 51 feeds in Round 11 and was named Suncorp Super Netball rebel Young Star. Her accuracy on the circle’s edge is a skill to be marvelled.
With an ability to read the play from defence and create intercepts, Weston is an emerging force. In 2017 she took leadership in the Melbourne Vixens’ defensive end, challenging the world’s best shooters on a weekly basis.

Katrina Grant has built an impressive record during her time in the Silver Ferns, progressing to the senior ranks from the 2005 World Youth Cup team. A smart reader of the game on defence, Grant is capable of making her presence felt in an aerial contest as well as the closemarking situation. She represented the Silver Ferns at two Netball World Cups and two Commonwealth Games.
Maria Tutaia has been a mainstay of the Silver Ferns for over a decade. Her ability to shoot accurately from long range sets her apart from other shooters, her allround development and maturity adding to her on-court leadership. She has represented New Zealand at three Netball World and three Commonwealth Games.
Gina Crampton is a gritty wing attack, who also plays centre, showing speed and drive off the line but also a maturity with her feeding ability into the shooting circle. She was a replacement player for the Southern Steel in 2012 but made her mark in 2015 when she earned a starting spot in all of her team’s Trans-Tasman league games.
Kayla Cullen was just 19 when she made her Silver Ferns debut in 2011. A major knee injury in 2013 ruled her out for 12 months and curtailed her progress. Speed off the mark, ability in the air and genuine athleticism have made Cullen a versatile player. Strong defensive qualities combined with an attacking flair make her equally comfortable at either wing or goal defence.

Hard-working midcourter Shannon Francois got her break in 2013 when called into the Silver Ferns squad as cover. She quickly made her mark with her speed and fitness levels. A nofrills type of player, Francois is a wholehearted performer with her dogged determination, relentless commitment and ability to execute.
Kelly Jury’s 192cm frame puts her as one of the tallest defenders in New Zealand and she uses every centimetre with a long lean over the ball as well as her ability to pull in the rebounds. Jury was a member of the FAST5 Ferns team that won the 2016 Fast5 Netball World Series. She was selected for her first Silver Ferns squad in 2017.
A dynamic player, Bailey Mes has redefined her shooting game in recent times, her athletic ability and accuracy setting a solid platform. Fleet-footed and possessing an impressive standing jump, the 186cm Mes has all the necessary attributes, her quality growing on the back of Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015.
Test Caps: 5 Exciting young defender Temalisi Fakahokotau burst onto the scene in style and made her international debut for the Silver Ferns in 2014 against the Australian Diamonds. With an impressive standing jump, sure handling and timing, Fakahokotau is a naturally talented defender with the ability to cover all three defensive positions.

Whitney Souness is one of two new faces in the Silver Ferns squad for 2017/2018. She had a standout year 2017 was one of the form wing attacks in the New Zealand domestic competition. Souness missed 2016 with a ruptured ACL but has returned fitter, faster and stronger. She made her debut in the 2017 Netball Quad Series.
In a year which was perhaps expected to be one of learning from her more experienced teammates, shooter Maia Wilson displayed the qualities which have taken her on a meteoric rise. Wilson has the ability to lose a defender on the baseline or with her strong hold in the shooting circle.
Test Caps: 16 The goal attack has taken her game to another level this season through consistent court time. Selby-Rickit combines her height and shooting accuracy to be a constant threat on court while showing her craft inside the circle with some clever offloads. She made her debut in 2016 and continues to get consistent international court time.
Test Caps: 8 Sam Sinclair took her game to a new level in 2016, with her tenacity and determination a feature of her play. She was selected in the FAST5 Ferns team that won the 2016 Fast5 Netball World Series, and was subsequently selected in the Silver Ferns squad for the first time in 2017.

Small Heroes. BIG Dreams. In its first year, Gardenvale Primary School saw 24 children participate in Suncorp NetSetGO, Netball Australia’s introductory netball program. With the support of the primary school Centre Coordinator, Annie Kay, has been able to use the facilities to deliver the program to year two students with the help of mums, dads and year five students each week. “Suncorp NetSetGO is such an important program because it focuses on developing the children’s fundamental movement skills that are essential to play not only netball but many other sports the children may play in years to come,” said Annie. “It is developmentally appropriate for the age of the children, focusing on developing the fundamentals through modified games and activities that are enjoyable.” “Throughout the NetSetGO program, I observed huge growth in the children. As their skills improved, they developed more confidence when participating in modified games, which they always enjoyed because they were experiencing success.” NetSetGO is the only introductory program for netball aimed at children aged 5–10 years. It develops the participants’ fine motor skills, focuses on netball skill development and provides an environment for participants to make friends and grow in confidence.

CONFIDENT GIRLS FOUNDATION how your money helped
FUNDRAISER Biloela Netball Association The small country town of Biloela in Central Queensland saw their netball teams unite to show their support in empowering vulnerable girls around Australia. Their fundraising event turned the courts into a sea of purple, as some teams wore purple ribbons, others socks and tutus, while a few even made their own shirts. The event was a huge success raising $288 and all involved were proud of how they all came together for the cause.
HOW THEIR FUNDRAISING HELPED: Aussie Aussie is an 11-year-old girl living with her family in the small town of Nhill, Victoria, as a part of the Karen refugee community. For Aussie, organised women’s sport was never a thought, let alone an option.
The cost for Aussie to continue to play netball, not only supports her as she puts on a bib every weekend, but has additional benefits for the wider Nhill and Karen community.
With financial support from the Confident Girls Foundation, Aussie can continue to participate in the sport she has grown to love. She can further immerse herself into the community and grow, learn and thrive both on and off the netball court.
The money required to allow Aussie to follow her passion was not exuberant, however the intangible benefits have influenced so many within her community, helping to create a unified multicultural community in Nhill.

FUNDRAISER Fintona Girls’ School The students at Fintona Girls’ School in Melbourne showed their support for vulnerable girls by holding a Year 12 student vs. staff netball match. The students were out on a mission to show their teachers who was boss on the court. Spectators provided a gold coin donation to watch the exciting game. It was the experience of the staff that walked away as victors, 29 to 12, but the real winners of the day are the girls who are now provided with the opportunities to become empowered and thrive.
HOW THEIR FUNDRAISING HELPED: Indulkuna Anagu School in the APY Lands South Australia The Indulkana Anagu School is located in the APY lands, five hours south of Alice Springs. Their biggest challenge is ensuring that students attend school and behave in class, through the Federal Government’s Remote School Attendance Strategy, their newest initiative is encouraging school attendance and behaviour through sport.
Students who have attended and behaved in school are allowed to participate in an after-school program of Inclusion NetSetGO, which is financially supported by the Confident Girls Foundation. With makeshift courts and portable netball rings, the 15 to 20 students who attend each week are having fun playing games whilst seeing improved educational outcomes and physical, mental and social wellbeing.

FONT AND SWATCH
DESIGNING #aussiediamonds #godiamonds #font_and_swatch #c2csport THE DIAMONDS 2017 DRESS, HIGH PERFORMANCE INSPIRATION TRAINING AND SUPPORTER RANGE
Font & Swatch (F&S) are a leading sports creative design agency. The F&S team have worked with Netball Australia for over 10 years, providing creative design and inspiration to the high performance team and merchandise ranges. This year sees the beginning of a new partnership with Netball Australia, F&S and Coast2Coast Sport to design and manufacture the high performance team and supporter wear. Commenting on the new range F&S owner and designer Elissa Hancock said “when designing the team, training and supporter range we set ourselves a theme of TRAIN, LOOK & BE… a DIAMOND.” F&S focus was to push the team and supporter wear closer together and really make the fans feel part of the action. To achieve this, they introduced a number of lightweight ‘athleisure’ items into the range, allowing the girls to layer up and interchange items at will. This makes them feel fashionable and athletic, whilst still delivering the sports performance at this elite level. It also allowed designers to mirror these items in the supporter range. 32
Constellation Cup 2017
The range itself draws on trends in international high performance apparel from national sporting teams, athleisure sports brands and high performance sporting brands. Designers introduced charcoal into the team and officials clothing, whilst retaining the core green and gold for the playing dress. Also used was the classic Diamonds own lime green and white as a pop colour throughout to contrast against the gold to give it a lighter feeling. “Working with the Samsung Diamonds, you have some of the most amazingly athletic women in Australia, so the dress has been designed to really emphasise the girls’ athleticism. A thinner racer line across the back, close fitting torso and green colouring over the shoulders really emphasises their muscle tone and strength,” Elissa said. www.fontandswatch.com www.c2csport.com #AussieDiamonds #GoDiamonds

How do the Samsung Diamonds refuel after a courtwork session? Diamonds Nutritionist Kerry Leech shares some of the athletes’ favourite protein ball recipes. SEEDS OF GOODNESS (makes 18) Ingredients:
Recipe:
200g trail mix 50g almonds 2 tablespoons chia seeds 2 tablespoons flax seeds 2 tablespoons pumpkin seeds 2 tablespoons sunflower seeds 1 tablespoons peanut butter 2 tablespoons maple syrup

FROM THE DOCTOR At every level of competition whether Suncorp NetSetGO or international netball, injuries are common and getting the right care is pivotal to getting you back on the court. One of the most frequently affected areas is the knee. There are many disorders of the knee related to playing netball, however one of the most common disorders is due to the patellofemoral joint (knee cap/patella and thigh bone/femur). The causes of patellofemoral joint pain is very multi-factorial, age related, and often with more than one cause contributing to symptoms. Ultimately, symptoms are caused by the patellar (knee cap) tracking abnormally in the groove on the femur (thigh bone).

Place all ingredients in a bowl and use a blender to blend to a fine grain. Roll into balls Enjoy!
The goal of treatment is to settle your pain and correct any biomechanical abnormalities to allow you to return you to your desired level of activity. Optimising your lower limb biomechanics through strengthening your quadriceps muscles, stretching the tight soft tissues and correcting other factors above and below the knee that are contributing to this condition. The knee can also be taped into the correct position to help assist the patella to move in the groove on your femur more efficiently. Initially, a reduction in the amount of training and playing that you are doing is often recommended, particularly if they are exacerbating your knee symptoms. Once your strength and flexibility have improved and your knee feels better, you may return to normal sports.
