AUSTRALIA TEAM PROFILES
WELCOME It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 2017 Fast5 Netball World Series. Following the success of the first Fast5 Netball World Series in Australia last year, we are excited to bring this innovative format of our game back to Melbourne’s Hisense Arena in 2017. Over 11,500 energetic fans enjoyed the action live in 2016 and there’s much to love about this adrenaline-filled competition. It doesn’t get better than the top six netballing nations in the world competing across two action-packed days, combined with world-class entertainment that spans on and off the court.
New Zealand’s Fast5 Ferns were named champions in 2016 – will they go back-toback? With the recent competitiveness of the Netball Quad Series, and crowd favourites Malawi sure to pull out some surprises, it could be anyone’s game. It’s time to dig up your wackiest costume with your netty friends, sit back and enjoy the show!

Get ready to be captivated by jaw-dropping super shots, lightning fast substitutions and game-changing power- plays. FAST5 Netball World Series program 1
INF PRESIDENT’S WELCOME On behalf of the International Netball Federation, welcome to the Fast5 Netball World Series. Fast5 is one of netball’s newest products and we are excited to see the progression of skills and tactics from teams to keep pushing the limits that this variation of the game offers. There are no better advocates of our game than our biggest stars. They are fantastic role models for netball, inspiring and empowering young people and fans all over the world. With the top six ranked nations competing here in Melbourne, we will be seeing some of the very best athletes our sport has to offer.
We expect the Fast5 Netball World Series to be an amazing two days of world-class action on and off the court with Melbourne widely renowned for being the sporting capital of Australia. It promises to be highly entertaining for netball’s rapidly growing army of fans, and a hugely competitive and thrilling world class event. I look forward to welcoming you to Melbourne in October. With my very best wishes
The Hon. Molly Rhone OJ, CD President International Netball Federation
MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER Welcome to the 2017 Fast5 Netball World Series. With champion athletes, teams from around the globe and around 1000 goals set to be scored, we’re in for another series of fast-paced, world-class netball. (And with a little bit of luck, a win for the home side).
2 FAST5 Netball World Series program
There’s no better city to host the Fast5 series than Melbourne. No one loves sport like we do, and we’re proud to be the host of Fast5 until 2018. I wish every team the best of luck, and every fan a great weekend.

RULES OF THE GAME PLAYING RULES
The Fast5 Netball World Series features modified rules. Outside of these, the standard rules of netball apply.
THE TEAM
SUBSTITUTIONS
Think you know netball, think again!
Fast5 includes rolling substitutions, which means a change can be made at any stage of the game, during breaks or during play.
6min
Q3 6min
1 MIN INTERVAL
6min
Q2
3 MIN INTERVAL
Q1
1 MIN INTERVAL
In Fast5 there are only five playing positions, with two shooters (GS and GA), two defenders (GK and GD) and one midcourter (C).
Q4 6min
There will be a designated area where subs must be made.
TIMING All Fast5 Netball World Series games will be short and sharp, with four six-minute quarters.
POWER PLAY
CENTRE PASSES
During a team’s Power Play quarter all goal points scored are doubled. The team that wins the toss will have the first choice of a Power Play quarter.
All centre passes shall be taken by the team that did not score the last goal. The coin toss at the start of the game will determine who takes the first centre pass in each quarter.
GOAL SCORING There are three different scoring zones in Fast5. Goal third. Super Shot made outside the goal circle, for the long-bomb specialists. Outer circle. A shot made in the outer circle, for those who want to be a little more daring. Inner circle. A shot made in the outer circle, for those who want to be a little more daring.

HADLEY
TO MIX UP THE PACE
How does the strategy change between traditional netball and Fast5 netball?
people sitting on the bench, some not taking the court.
There is so much more space on the court as a midcourter. The strategy includes a lot harder running, and longer balls. The Australian way is generally very short and sharp, in Fast5 you have to prepare yourself for those longer runs and being able to mix it up between our short and sharp plays and also being able to create space. Defensively it is about learning to defend away from the two point zone not just the one point zone, which we are so used to.
I also love that as a centre you know you have to work hard for two or three minutes and then you can come off and someone is there to help you out.
What is your favourite thing about the Fast5 Netball World Series? I love the aspect that there is a team of ten and we have rolling subs, and everyone gets on and it’s going crazy. The momentum just keeps going. You don’t have five
The six countries are pretty even; it’s anyone’s game if the shooters are on fire then they are in the game. I love that every single game you play is a really tough game and you have to bring your best each time. What’s the feeling in the Australian camp? The vibe is really cool, everyone is really excited and ready for their opportunity to play in the green and gold at the Fast5 World Series. A lot haven’t played for Australia before so that is really exciting to be a part of that. FAST5 Netball World Series program 5
FAST5 IN NUMBERS 2017 sees the eighth instalment of the exciting Fast5 Netball format. New Zealand are the current champions with a dominant display last year against an Australia team that offered so much.
Not surprisingly New Zealand dominate scoring data but Australia, England and Jamaica are very close in all categories.

FAST5 2016 STATS Melbourne hosted the Fast5 for the first time in 2016 and there were two main differences that propelled New Zealand to their sixth title. 1.
They scored 18 three-point goals 2. which was ten more across the tournament than any other team thanks to Maria Tutaia who scored 16 of these goals. Five of those threepoint goals came in the final with three in their Power Play Quarter.
Australia unfortunately only scored two three-point goals across the entire tournament and only 44 points in their nominated Power Play Quarter. Australia
They also dominated their Power Play Quarters scoring 114 points which included 18 in the final.
also has the unwanted record of being the only team not score a single goal (point) in their nominated Power Play Quarter and this just happened to be in the final.

READY FOR SPEEDY RETURN
How are you feeling about making your return to international netball, since the birth of your son, at the Fast5 Netball World Series? I’m super excited, but it’s a pretty big challenge. I am excited and nervous at the same time. It has been so long since I have played at that level, so hopefully it goes well. What makes Fast5 netball more challenging than regular netball? The pace of it and the longer shots, that’s what wins the games really. It will be about maintaining that pace and putting those long shots away, that’s the big one.
How do you prepare for Fast5 compared to regular netball? Running more. There’s a lot of running in normal netball anyway, it’s generally a running game. It will be about doing shortsharp, high intensity bursts. Are the Fast5 Ferns feeling the pressure, given the success the team has experienced? Hopefully we can go and just win it without putting too much pressure on ourselves. We will probably perform better that way. It’s a young team coming through, so we’ll just see what we can do. Are you going to get some tips from the queen of three-pointers, Maria Tutaia, leading into the series? She’s the Queen of Fast5. Hopefully us shooters can draw on Maria’s knowledge.
